When a tanker is alongside a berth, fire-fighting
equipment is to be ready for immediateimmediateimmediate
use
Onboard the ship, this is achieved by fire hoses with
spray / jet nozzles connected and run out forward
and aft of the manifold in use. Having portable dry
chemical powder extinguishers available near the
manifold provides protection against small flash fires

Oil and Petroleum Products -
Terminals
Installation Minimum Provisions
1. (i) Barge berth or jetty handling liquids with a flash point
at or below
60C and any product heated above its flash point.
(ii)
Tanker berth or jetty handling ships of less than 20,000 tonnes
deadweight and less than one ship per week.
Fire main and fire hydrants with a fire water supply of 100 m3/hr.
Fire-fighting equipment consisting of hand-held and wheeled fire
extinguishers, fire hose, foam branch pipes, portable or wheeled
foam/water monitors.
Static or trailer borne 3m3
bulk supply of foam concentrate.
Portable equipment:
2 x 9 kg portable dry chemical extinguishers
2 x 50 kg wheeled dry chemical extinguishers
2. Tanker berth or jetty handling ships of less than 50,000 tonnes
dwt
or more than one tanker per week of less than 20,000 tonnes
dwt.
Fire main and fire hydrants with a water supply of 350 m3/hr.
Portable and wheeled fire-fighting equipment.
Fixed foam/water monitors and appropriate bulk concentrate supplies.
Jetty support structure protection (optional).
Portable equipment:
4 x 9 kg portable dry chemical extinguishers
2 x 75 kg wheeled dry chemical extinguishers
3. Tanker berth or jetty handling ships of 50,000 tonnes dwt
or larger
possibly VLCC size.
Fire main and fire hydrants with a fire water supply of 700 m3/hr.
Portable and wheeled fire-fighting equipment.
Fixed foam/water monitors and appropriate bulk concentrate supplies.
Jetty support structure protection (optional).
Portable equipment:
6 x 9 kg portable dry chemical extinguishers
4 x 75 kg wheeled dry chemical extinguishers
4. Sea Island Berth. Fire protection facilities as above according to use and size of
ship.

4 x 75 kg wheeled dry chemical extinguishers

International Shore Fire Connection
All marine terminals with a firewater system should
provide at least one international shore fireconnection, complete with nuts and bolts, through
which water could be supplied to a tanker's fire main
if required for shipboard fire-fighting
