If — Hie Times Record ii «•*•'••' ' i — »y " '•••"•••" —— Saturday. June 23, 1973 Auto Racing By Dave Lance s Shoots 36 Holes Without A Bogey Fezler Grabs Classic Lead Saratoga Clocker r AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Forrest Fezler, victim of a heartbreaking loss earlier this season, fashioned a five-under-par 65 and swept into sole control of the sec- ond round lead Friday in the $16 0 , 0 0 0 American Golf Classic. The stubby, 23-year-old IS5fSs In October of 1972, Car and Driver magazine spon- sored a Showroom Stock Sedan Challenge race at Lime Rock, Conn., entering three of its own "Reader Beater" cars in the field. The odds of an outsider spoiling the success of the entry's obvious technical know-how and strorig financial backing had to be rated slim. But what they didn't count on was a stunning victory by Bruce Cargill of Voorheesville, driving a Ken Goewey Dodge-Colt of Troy. Cargill trounced the field, scoring his first major victory in more than 15 years ef on-again, off-again racing. It also was a sign of things to come for Cargill and the Goewey Colt. Cargill. the proprietor of Lotus Northeast on Central Ave. in Albany, began his road racing career in 1958, campaigning a powerful, but poor handling Jaguar XK120. After a few seasons, he switched to an Alfa Romeo, but suffered similar handling problems. For the next 10 years, Cargill raced and learned. In 1968, he began driving a Formula Ford Lotus 51 in the Formula B class. As there was no sanctioned division for the FF class. Cargill's record was noteworthy against the more exotic FB cars. Cargill.continued his driving in the newly recognized Formula Ford division with a new Lotus 61 FF in 1969. That same year he became closely associated with the fledgling International Motor Sports Association, (INSA). Cargill sat out the 70 and 71 seasons, but was more than ready to resume racing when Ken Goewey invited him to drive his Showroom Stock Colt in the SCCA divi- m — J1.5W P « » , NMe tt* - A Taylor Lobell 3.40 2 K «- E e>attan Imp 5 to 5 » 3 40 KW Cousin 3 06 Tim*: 2:0S.l. <••* — dead r»»i for first Scratched Overshot (C), iMWlfWr <H> MO ^ it^*e*r •*•€•, Mil. Mrs. Elizabeth Pritchard of Minneapolis, half owner of Our Native, said "I don't want to run him." On Thursday, owner Neil Hellman of Albany scratched Linda's Chief be- cause he was dissatisfied with the set distance of lVs miles. Dr. Ed Thomas of Lexing- ton, Ky., a veterinarian who bred Our Native, has a one- quarter share. The other quarter belongs to Bill Res- seguet Jr. of New Orleans who trains the colt- Resse- guet sold half of his interest to Thomas last winter. It was Resseguet who agr- eed to the special race. Mrs. Pritchard, speaking by phone from Minneapolis, said Friday she spoke to Dr. Thomas Thursday morning and "he agreed with my po- sition." Mrs. Pritchard further said "I was not consulted. I first heard it on television Wednesday night. Our Na- tive has run against Secret- ariat twice (a distant third in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness) and I con- sider Secretariat the finest horse of the century. Ano- ther meeting, as far as I'm c o n c e r n e d would prove nothing." When Linda's Chief de- fected, Blue Chip Dan, who had been named as an alter- nate, moved into a starter's role. On Thursday a second alternate, My Gallant, was named. Acting for his mother and with assistance from the family attorney, Austin Mit- tler of Minneapolis, Tom Pritchard of New York is- sued a long statement there. It said in part: "This is to advise that we have formally requested Ar- lington Park officials to scratch Our Native from the proposed Invitional race on June 30. "The initial concept of the race has been changed. At first consideration the race appeared to be a legitimate competition between horses of the highest caliber. How- ever, the decision to with- draw Linda's Chief and his subsequent replacement by Blue Chip Dan has clearly altered the character of the race. In short, the race is no longer a race but merely an exhibition." Green Mountain Racing Entries BRUCE CARGILL sion. The 72 season proved to be his best, and was cli- maxed by his impressive victory at Lime Rock. This year, Cargill, along with sponsors Goewey and the Silicone Division of General Eleetrie, has-electecHrr run ths IMSA circuit, in the Baby Grand Division. This division, which is titled the B.F.G. Radial Chal- lenge Series, is open to most American and imported sub- compacts, divided into two classes. The "A" class is for up to 1600 cc overhead cam (ohc) cars or two liter rocker arm machines. The class in- cludes Tovotas, 1600 cc BMWs, and of course the (ohc) Dodge Colt. The "B" class is designed for over 1600 cc ohc eng- ines or over 2 liter rocker arm autos. Competitors in this class include'2002 BMWs , Capris, and AMC Gremlins. While the Gremlins have dominated the larger motored class, the Colt has been the car to watch in the "A" class. In fact, Colts finished 1,2.3 in class at INSA's June 10th event at Pocono, Pa. The winner of the 200 mile race was who else Bruce Cargill in the Goewey Colt. As is evidenced by their Pocono victory, Cargill and sponsors have prepared a super competitive machine. All work on the car is carried out in Cargill's Lotus garage. In addition to the Goewey and G.E. sponsorship, Car- gill has also been fortunate enough to gain the help of Chrysler Corp. high performance chassis engineer Larry Rathgeb and Valvoline Oil. Cargill is understandably pleased with the Colt's per- formance and excited about the remaining IMSA season. Under the leadership of former SCCA offical John Bishop. IMSA has initiated an impressive 10-race sched- ule, patterned somewhat after the NASCAR Winston Cup series. The next event for IMSA and Cargill is a six-hour endurance event, the Mid-Ohio race circuit in Lexington, Ohio. The 4-10 p.m. grind takes place on July 14th and a driver is required. Driving with Cargill will be former national Formula B champion Fred Stevenson of Lotus East (Millerton, N.Y.) While Cargill would someday like to graduate to a Grand National road racing circuit, his efforts now are directed at beating the Baltimore-based Colt of Carson Baird and the Bolus & Snopes Colt of Car and Driver magazine. Odds are indeed good that the Ken Goewey Colt will conquer Car and Driver for the fourth time in Ohio and mayj>e even number five at Lime Rock on Sept. 15. In any case, good luck to Bruce Cargill and Troy's Baby Grand. Fezler, who lost to Lee Trevino in the nationally televised final round of the Jackie Gleason Classic ear- lier this season, owned a four-stroke lead over de- fending champion Bert Yan- cey. Yancey, who blazed over the final nine holes with a stunning seven-under-par 28, also had a 65 and a 136 total for two rounds, Newly crowned U.S. Open champion Johnny Miller, tied with Fezler at the end of the first day's play, mat- ched par 70 on the long, lush layout ard was tied at 137 with Australian Bruce Crampton. Crampton, a threet-ime winner already this year, had a second round of 67. The group at 138—two un- der par but a distant six strokes back of Fez- ler—included former PGA champion Al Geiberger, Lanny Wadkins, John Ma- haffey and Ed Sneed. Wad- kins and Mahaffey matched 67s in the warm, sunny wea- ther while Sneed and Gei- berger had 68s. Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer were in a group at 139. Nicklaus had a 70 and Palmer slipped to 71. "Not too bad, I guess," said Nicklaus, who took a double-bogey 7 on the 16th hole. "Anytime you're un- der par after two rounds on Firestone you're not doing too bad." Fezler, winner of almost $60,000 in this, his second year on the tour, matched the course record with a 31 on the front nine and missed only two greens in his solid effort. The stocky, mastachioed Fezler birdied the first hole from 15 feet and reacted the par 5 second with a three- wood second shot to set up another one. He rolled in an 18-footer on the fourth hole and scored from 30 feet on the sixth. His only birdie coming home was on the 15th where he lashed a two iron to with- in eight feet of the flag on the 230-yard par 3. In October of 1972, Car and Driver magazine sponsored a Showroom Stock Sedan Challenge race at Lime Rock, Conn., entering three of its own "Reader Beater" cars in the field.

Cargill sat out the 70 and 71 seasons, but was more than ready to resume racing when Ken Goewey invited him to drive his Showroom Stock Colt in the SCCA divi-

Our Native Out Of Chicago Race

CHICAGO (AP) - The second defection in the field to face Secretariat at„Ar-lington Park a week from Saturday apparently occurred Friday.

Mrs. Elizabeth Pritchard of Minneapolis, half owner of Our Native, said "I don't want to run him."

On Thursday, owner Neil H e l l m a n of A l b a n y scratched Linda's Chief because he was dissatisfied with the set distance of lVs miles.

Dr. Ed Thomas of Lexington, Ky., a veterinarian who bred Our Native, has a one-quarter share. The other quarter belongs to Bill Res-seguet Jr. of New Orleans who trains the colt- Resse-guet sold half of his interest to Thomas last winter.

It was Resseguet who agreed to the special race. Mrs. Pritchard, speaking by phone from Minneapolis, said Friday she spoke to Dr. Thomas Thursday morning and "he agreed with my position."

Mrs. Pritchard further said "I was not consulted. I first heard it on television Wednesday night. Our Native has run against Secretariat twice (a distant third in both the Kentucky Derby

and Preakness) and I consider Secretariat the finest horse of the century. Another meeting, as far as I'm c o n c e r n e d would prove nothing."

When Linda's Chief defected, Blue Chip Dan, who had been named as an alternate, moved into a starter's role. On Thursday a second alternate, My Gallant, was named.

Acting for his mother and with assistance from the family attorney, Austin Mit-tler of Minneapolis, Tom Pritchard of New York issued a long statement there.

It said in part: "This is to advise that we

have formally requested Arlington Park officials to scratch Our Native from the proposed Invitional race on June 30.

"The initial concept of the race has been changed. At first consideration the race appeared to be a legitimate competition between horses of the highest caliber. However, the decision to withdraw Linda's Chief and his subsequent replacement by Blue Chip Dan has clearly altered the character of the race. In short, the race is no longer a race but merely an exhibition."

BRUCE CARGILL

sion. The 72 season proved to be his best, and was climaxed by his impressive victory at Lime Rock.

This year, Cargill, along with sponsors Goewey and the Silicone Division of General Eleetrie, has-electecHrr run ths IMSA circuit, in the Baby Grand Division.

This division, which is titled the B.F.G. Radial Challenge Series, is open to most American and imported sub-compacts, divided into two classes.

The "A" class is for up to 1600 cc overhead cam (ohc) cars or two liter rocker arm machines. The class includes Tovotas, 1600 cc BMWs, and of course the (ohc) Dodge Colt.

The "B" class is designed for over 1600 cc ohc engines or over 2 liter rocker arm autos.

The winner of the 200 mile race was who else — Bruce Cargill in the Goewey Colt.

As is evidenced by their Pocono victory, Cargill and sponsors have prepared a super competitive machine. All work on the car is carried out in Cargill's Lotus garage.

In addition to the Goewey and G.E. sponsorship, Cargill has also been fortunate enough to gain the help of Chrysler Corp. high performance chassis engineer Larry Rathgeb and Valvoline Oil.

Cargill is understandably pleased with the Colt's performance and excited about the remaining IMSA season.

Under the leadership of former SCCA offical John Bishop. IMSA has initiated an impressive 10-race schedule, patterned somewhat after the NASCAR Winston Cup series.

The next event for IMSA and Cargill is a six-hour endurance event, the Mid-Ohio race circuit in Lexington, Ohio. The 4-10 p.m. grind takes place on July 14th and a driver is required. Driving with Cargill will be former national Formula B champion Fred Stevenson of Lotus East (Millerton, N.Y.)

While Cargill would someday like to graduate to a Grand National road racing circuit, his efforts now are directed at beating the Baltimore-based Colt of Carson Baird and the Bolus & Snopes Colt of Car and Driver magazine.

Odds are indeed good that the Ken Goewey Colt will conquer Car and Driver for the fourth time in Ohio and mayj>e even number five at Lime Rock on Sept. 15.

In any case, good luck to Bruce Cargill and Troy's Baby Grand.

DeSarro Takes Modified Event

Fred DeSarro drove to a commanding win in the 35-lap modified feature event Friday night at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway.

DeSarro jumped out early to outdistance 1972 track champion Bugsy Stevens.

Dave Depew of Argyle took the 20-lap Charger feature. A fireworks display highlights next Friday's full program of auto racing.

Country Club course, one of the longest and most demanding layouts the touring pros play all year.

Fezler, who lost to Lee Trevino in the nationally televised final round of the Jackie Gleason Classic earlier this season, owned a four-stroke lead over defending champion Bert Yancey.

Yancey, who blazed over the final nine holes with a stunning seven-under-par 28, also had a 65 and a 136 total for two rounds,

Newly crowned U.S. Open champion Johnny Miller, tied with Fezler at the end of the first day's play, matched par 70 on the long, lush layout ard was tied at 137 w i t h Australian Bruce Crampton.

Crampton, a threet-ime winner already this year, had a second round of 67.

The group at 138—two under par but a distant six s t r o k e s back of Fezler—included former PGA champion Al Geiberger, Lanny Wadkins, John Ma-haffey and Ed Sneed. Wad-kins and Mahaffey matched 67s in the warm, sunny weather while Sneed and Geiberger had 68s.

Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer were in a group at 139. Nicklaus had a 70 and Palmer slipped to 71.

"Not too bad, I guess," said Nicklaus, who took a double-bogey 7 on the 16th hole. "Anytime you're under par after two rounds on Firestone you're not doing too bad."

Fezler, winner of almost $60,000 in this, his second year on the tour, matched the course record with a 31 on the front nine and missed only two greens in his solid effort.

The stocky, mastachioed Fezler birdied the first hole from 15 feet and reacted the par 5 second with a three-wood second shot to set up another one.

He rolled in an 18-footer on the fourth hole and scored from 30 feet on the sixth.

His only birdie coming home was on the 15th where he lashed a two iron to within eight feet of the flag on the 230-yard par 3.
