TCDSB MUSIC FESTIVAL

OBJECTIVES

• To promote a love of choral and instrumental music.

• To promote excellence in choral and instrumental performance.

• To provide an opportunity for students to learn from other students.

• To expose students and teachers to good choral and instrumental repertoire.

• To provide an opportunity to exchange choral and instrumental ideas and interpretations.

• To provide positive and constructive feedback to students and teachers by means of adjudication.

• To foster the importance of live choral and instrumental performances.

• To develop a sense of community within and among our Catholic schools through music.

STRUCTURE

The music festival is a non-competitive, positive and constructive music event. Performing groups will gather for a session in either the morning or the afternoon. They will perform 2 selections for each other and an adjudicator. One selection should be from the list provided (with the exception of Show Choir Category) plus one of their own choice. All conductors should consider variety in choosing their selections.

The adjudicator will comment on the overall performance and perhaps work with the whole group on one or two items; the adjudicator will also provide a written adjudication for each group and give it to the conductor.

GENERAL INFORMATION DATES

The dates for the Festival are:

• Elementary: April 1st to April 18th,

• Secondary: April 23rd to April 30th,

Registration Dates: From February 25th to March 8th, 2019

A School Excursion Form must be completed.

EQUIPMENT The following equipment will be provided:

Vocal Instrumental 3 tiered risers (floor + 3 levels) Chairs Piano Music stands

Music stand for conductor Bass drum, snare drum, suspended cymbal, bells REGISTRATION

We suggest that each teacher register no more than two groups per half-day session in order to generate an audience from various schools. Due to space limitations on the stage, choirs and bands may not exceed 70 members.

REGISTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ‐ ALL SESSIONS ARE FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED

Registration will be open from Monday February 25th to Friday March 8th, 2019.

SUPERVISORS

Supervisors must be provided as per terms and conditions listed in the TCDSB Excursion Handbook – Section 4, 17 (page 24).

DRESS

As representatives of their schools, students should dress appropriately. School or choir uniforms may be worn. No costumes or props should be used. Show Choir accepted.

BEHAVIOUR

Students should be reminded of acceptable behaviour – for example:

• applause is the only appropriate form of appreciation following the completion of each performance;

• remain quiet, attentive and seated during others’ performances and adjudications.

NATIONAL ANTHEM

'O Canada' will be sung in a combination of English and French at the beginning of ALL sessions. At rehearsals, conductors are encouraged to practice the singing of the National Anthem in both languages with their choirs. For example:

O Canada! Our home and native land. True patriot love in all thy sons command.

Car ton bras sait porter l'épée. Il sait porter la croix! Ton histoire est une épopée. Des plus brilliants exploits.

God keep our land glorious and free. O Canada! We stand on guard for thee. O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.

WARM‐UP

As there will be no warm-up room available for use, the choral adjudicator will lead choirs in a short warm-up. Instrumental groups will be given a maximum of two minutes before performance for tuning and warm-up.

Page 10: FESTIVAL DATES REGISTRATION DATES - tcdsb.org · Band Information 16 . Selections . Beginner Band 17-18 . Band 19-20 . Strings 21 . Selections . Non-Reading Strings . School String

ACCOMPANIMENTS

The choral accompaniment used must be the arrangement indicated on the list. It is the responsibility of the choral conductor to find an accompanist and to rehearse the choir with him/her prior to the day of performance. Absolutely no recorded accompaniment. Show Choir excepted.

Accompanists may be hired for performance and/or rehearsal:

Christinia Labriola - [email protected] Michele Comrie - [email protected]

for further assistance: Graz Brescacin – [email protected] ????

ADJUDICATION

All participating groups will be adjudicated. Adjudicators will address the entire group at each session and provide a written adjudication for the conductor for each group. The adjudicator may also work on some aspect of choral or instrumental technique with each group on the program for the benefit of all present. Adjudication of the performance begins from the time students proceed to their performance area (e.g., stage) to the time that they return to their seats.

CERTIFICATE OF PARTICIPATION

At the conclusion of each performance, groups will be presented with a Certificate of Participation. MEDIA

There is the possibility of media coverage at some of the festival sessions. This is a “good news” event and we welcome coverage in the press. Please ensure that release forms for all performers have been filed at the school. Notify the festival session coordinator if your group, or certain students, are not permitted to be photographed. Festival session coordinators are instructed to look for, and speak to, media personnel before allowing any photography.

BAND

BEGINNING BAND All Grade 7 or Grade 6/7 combined classes CONCERT BAND All Grade 8 or Grade 7/8 combined classes

1) Choose ONE piece from the following 4 lists, or similar contrasting piece of your choice. In

most cases, a beginning band will play Grade ½ or Grade 1 selections and a more experienced band will play grade 1 or 2 selections. However, a fine Grade 7 band may play Grade 2 selections, and a developing Grade 8 band may play Grade ½ selections. Choose the pieces most appropriate for your bands using the descriptors from each of the following grade levels.

2) Choose one of the following COMPULSORY selections:

a) Standard of Excellence Duet #144 b) Essential Elements #186

In the world of band music, grading is a somewhat subjective exercise. The descriptions of the various grade levels on the following pages comes from years of diverse experience of many individuals. Sometimes a piece is very simple in all but one part. This may or may not change the grade. Composers do not necessarily write pieces with the following parameters in mind. They write music. The pieces listed generally fit the descriptors for that grade level. Everyone will never agree when grading music selections, so use the descriptors as guidelines and choose the pieces most appropriate for your band(s). Always choose quality music that you will enjoy teaching and performing.
