Cindi grew up in Leavenworth, Kansas. After graduating from Kansas University, she came to Wichita to attend graduate school at Wichita State University. By age 22, Cindi had a master's de-gree and a job as coordinator of Gifted and Talented Education at Southeast High School and taught there for seven years.

On a whim, Cindi bought the Beaumont Hotel and Restaurant and spent the summer renovating the hotel. Her parents purchased the hotel and restaurant from her after her father retired from Gen-eral Motors. Cindi went back into teaching and taught another twelve years, this time teaching Government, Psychology, Eco-nomics and History. Cindi said teaching is a great career in that you have summers to pursue education, travel, hobbies and gardening. Cindi said, "I've taken classes in Boston, Anchorage, San Antonio, Seattle and colleges in Kansas."

Husband Richard and Cindi own Dent Doctor, a franchise for hail damage to cars and travel all over the country. When Richard is on a business trip, Cindi visits

nurseries and Botanical gardens when she can travel with him. Cindy has three daughters: The youngest is at K-State; the mid-dle daughter is a gratuate stu-dent at Marshall University in West Virginia; the oldest daugh-ter graduated from WSU with a business degree and a second degree in nursing. If dues haven’t been paid this month—you will stop receiving

the newsletter starting in March.

I t seems every year we have at least one cold

snap here in Wichita. By that I mean at least a

week or so of really cold weather with tempera-

tures dropping below zero and wind chills well into

the negative numbers.

I look forward to these days. Not because I like

frozen birdbaths or shoveling snow. I like it be-

cause there is generally only one and from here

it’s downhill cruising into Spring.

This is the time of year we start shopping for

roses and planning our Spring garden. Searching

through catalogs of flowers and designing land-

scapes for the yard. Placing orders for the roses

we have chosen gives us the joy of the wait, an-

ticipating the day they will arrive by postal carrier

at our front door. That day means Spring, and

with it, warm weather has arrived.

These activities keep us warm throughout the rest

of the Winter and give glimpses of the summer

days to come.

So don’t despair. Look to the near future and al-

ways remember, as Hal Borland says; “No winter

lasts forever; no spring skips its turn”.

Wichita Garden Show March 3-7, 2010

WRS Wichita Garden Show booth 2009

Once again this year, the Wichita Rose Society will be setting up a wonderful booth in the Wichita Garden Show. The

theme of the Show this year is “Gardens of the World”. The theme that we have selected for our booth is an Old Eng-

lish Formal Garden. The booth will contain a section of David Austin Roses, Hybrid Tea Roses, Shrub Roses and low

maintenance double red and pink Knockouts. We are planning a larger booth this year – it will be 20’ x 25’. The booth

will be highlighted by approximately 60 blooming roses (if the weather cooperates) and complimented by boxwoods to

make it look more formal. It will hopefully also include a corner blue LED water-

fall, an arbor entry way, a sitting bench and a statue.

If this all comes together, this could be a very impressive booth for the Wichita

Rose Society with great exposure. But we can not create this booth without a lot

of energetic workers to setup on Sunday Feb 28th, work the booth from March 3-

7th , and help tear down March 7-8th. To get a free pass into the show, the Show

requires a member to work a 4 hour shift during open hours. Actually setting up

is a lot of fun – come join us. We will be in the same area as last year. We will

also be selling almost all the roses at the show like we did last year.

Please come to our regular monthly meeting on February 9th at to sign up for the work schedule to get a free pass. We

need a lot of help and it will be a lot of fun working together.

a tv captioner, she can work out of her home. Also, this spring she is taking classes to learn stained glass.

In May, Cindi will open her yard for people to see the iris and peonies and again in the summer for daylilies, perennials and, hopefully, roses.

As your program chairman, Cindi would like to hear your suggestions for this year's programs. You can bet she'll be on the ball, so contact her soon!

Lawn and Garden Soil Testing

1. Use a soil probe, spade or shovel to sample the soil pro-file to a depth of 3-6 inches. It is important to obtain a representative sample of the soil in the root zone rather than from the surface soil. 3” profile for established lawns. 6” profile for vegetable and flower gardens (figure 1).

2. A test requires a mixture of 5 samples or more around your garden area (figure 2), then combine these in a clean bucket or pail. This provides a representative sam-ple of the entire garden area.

Figure 1

Figure 3

Figure 2 (X) = soil samples

3. From the bucket or pail, select about a pint of soil. Label it with your name, address, and information on the crops to be grown. If you bring more than one sample, be sure to label each plainly (figure 3).

4. You local Extension horticultural agent will send it to the Kansas State University soil testing laboratory. Results and recommendations are mailed out approximately three weeks after receiving the sample.
