What is a Chanticleer?

Chanticleer gives Coastal Carolina

University one of the most unique

nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer

comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales

and came to Coastal when the University

was a member of the University of South

Carolina system.

Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the

barnyard with cunning and wit. His

competitiveness never wanes as he battles

to the end, using his brains to come out on

top every time.

THE INITIAL ELIGIBILITY

CLEARINGHOUSE

What is the Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse?

If you intend to participate in Division I athletics as a freshman, you

must register with and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility

Clearinghouse. Your high school counselor should provide you with the

student-release form and a red brochure titled, “Making Sure You Are Eligible

to Participate in College Sports.”

How do I register with the Clearinghouse?

Complete the student-release form and mail the top (white) copy of the

form to the Clearinghouse along with the $18 registration fee.

What else does the Clearinghouse need to certify me?

After graduation and before school closes for the summer, your high

school must send the Clearinghouse a copy of your final transcript that

confirms graduation from high school. You must also have your ACT or SAT

scores sent to the Clearinghouse.

How do I have my test scores sent to the Clearinghouse?

Test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. You can

accomplish this by marking code 9999 as one of the institutions to receive

your scores, or submit a request for an “Additional Score Report” to the

appropriate testing agency.

RECRUITING REGULATIONS

When do I become a perspective student-athlete?

When you start ninth-grade classes. Before the ninth grade, you become

a perspective student-athlete if a college gives you (or your relatives or

friends) any financial aid or other benefits that the college does not provide

to all prospective students.

When is a college considered to be recruiting me?

If any coach or representative of the college’s athletics interests

approaches you (or any member of your family) about enrolling and

participating in athletics at that college.

Who can recruit me?

Only university coaches and staff. Alumni and friends of the university

are NOT permitted to contact prospective student-athletes in any way.

OFFICIAL VISITS

How many official visits am I allowed to take? Beginning when?

Each prospective student-athlete is limited to five official visits which

may be taken following the opening day of classes of your senior year of

high school.

What must the school have from me before I take an official visit?

The recruiting institution must already have a high school or a college

transcript and ACT or SAT test scores on file.

UNOFFICIAL VISITS

Can I pay my own way to visit a college campus? Starting when?

You may visit an institution’s campus at your own expense an unlimited

number of times before your senior year of high school and continuing in

your senior year. This is an unofficial visit.

What can the school give me when I go on an unofficial visit?

A maximum of three complimentary admissions to a campus athletic event

in which that school’s team is competing, issued through a pass list only.

Such complimentary admissions are for the exclusive use of the prospect

and those persons accompanying him on the visit. They can be issued only

on an individual game basis.

PHONE CALLS

Who can call me on the phone? When? How often?

Faculty members and coaches are permitted to call you after July 1, after

the completion of your junior year. After that date, a coach or faculty member

can call you or your parents or legal guardian once a week. Boosters are

not permitted to call.

When are coaches or faculty members allowed unlimited calls to

me?

At the following times: During the five days immediately before your

official visit to that university; on the day of a coach’s off-campus contact

with you; during the time beginning with the initial National Letter of Intent

(NLI) signing date in your sport through the two days after the signing date.

Can I call coaches collect or toll free? When?

Yes. You may call coaches or universities collect or use a toll-free (1-

800) number. They may receive calls on or after July 1 after you complete

your junior year of high school.

CORRESPONDENCE AND RECRUITING

MATERIALS

From whom can I receive letters? Beginning when?

Coaches, faculty members and students (but not boosters) can send you

letters, starting September 1 of your junior year in high school.

What can a university send me?

A Division I university may provide you with the following material:

General correspondence, including letters, U.S. Postal Service postcards

and institutional note cards, and materials printed on plain white paper

with black ink; NCAA educational information; pre-enrollment information

subsequent to signing a National Letter of Intent with the university; one

athletic publication (media guide or recruiting guide) which may include

only one color printing inside; official academic , admissions and student

services publications or videotape produced by the institution and available

to all the students; questionnaires.

Can they send me anything prior to my junior year?

Only questionnaires and summer camp brochures.

Can any other materials be mailed to me?

No. Game programs, which may not include posters, can be provided

only during official or unofficial visits to the school’s campus. The same

restrictions apply to student-athlete handbooks.

SUMMER JOBS

Can a university I have signed with help me get a summer job?

Beginning when?

After you sign a National Letter of Intent, the school you signed with may

arrange summer employment for you. That employment may begin AFTER

you graduate from high school.

Any questions?

If you should have any further questions,

please contact Casey Comoroski, Coastal

Carolina University’s Assistant Director of

Athletics for Compliance. She may be reached

via email at [email protected] or by phone

at 843-349-2839.

Jess Dannelly is entering his 15th season at the helm of the Lady

Chanticleer’s softball program and is in his 10th year as the Associate

Director of Athletics at Coastal Carolina University. During his tenure,

Coach Dannelly has led the Lady Chants to four Big South Conference

Championships and trips to the 1998, 2000, and 2001 NCAA Regionals. With

his 459-319 (.590) career record, he is also Coastal Carolina’s all-time

winningest coach in any sport. Coach Dannelly recorded his 400th career victory

at Coastal Carolina on March 5, 2000, when the Lady Chanticleers downed the

College of Charleston 3-0.

In addition to the great overall career record, Coach Dannelly has also

posted a 116-56 (.674) mark against teams from the Big South Conference.

Entering the 2002 season, the Dannelly-led Lady Chants have placed 15 players

on NCAA’s All-Region teams, 64 players on Big South All-Conference teams

and 45 players on Big South All-Tournament teams.

During his career, Coach Dannelly has been named the Big South

Conference Coach of the Year five times. In addition to the 1998, 2000, and

2001 NCAA Tournament teams, Coastal’s 1994 team is known as perhaps the

best team to have ever played in the Big South Conference. That team posted a 44-15 record on the season, broke or tied

54 individual or team records and sported the NCAA Academic Athlete of the Year, the Big South Conference Player of

the Year, Rookie of the Year, four all-conference players and three NCAA All-South Region players. Also off of that

team came Sara Graziano, who went on to star with several teams in the Women’s Professional Softball League and

currently serves as an assistant softball coach at Georgia Tech.

In 1998, Coastal Carolina earned its first trip to an NCAA Regional by sweeping through the Big South Conference

Tournament and then defeating Florida A&M in consecutive extra inning games in the best two-of-three play-in series.

The Lady Chants were two and out in the NCAA Regional in Lincoln, Nebraska, falling to the fifth ranked Cornhuskers and Oregon.

After losing in the Big South Conference championship game in 1999, Coach Dannelly's squad was poised for the 2000 season. That season not only saw

Coach Dannelly reach the 400-win plateau, but it also saw the Lady Chanticleers program reach yet another level. The squad, which completed the season with

a 37-28 overall record, not only won the program’s third Big South Conference title and advanced to its second NCAA Regional, but the Lady Chants became

the first female team in any sport in the Big South Conference to earn a victory in an NCAA Championship event. Coastal traveled to the NCAA Region 5

tournament in Tempe, Arizona, and eliminated #21 Florida Atlantic and Penn State before Arizona State scored a 2-1 come-from-behind victory to end the

Lady Chants season. The run at the NCAA Regional gained the Coastal Carolina program much national attention and a ranking of 29th in the nation in the

final NFCA poll.

The 2001 season proved to be a roller coaster of a season and the chances for a third trip to the NCAA Regionals in four seasons appeared bleak. Coastal

Carolina dropped five of its final eight regular season games, but entered the Big South Tournament winning the final two games by a combined 13-1 margin.

The offensive pressure continued in tournament action as Coach Dannelly rallied his squad for three consecutive victories, outscoring the opposition 21-6.

After making the cross-country trek to Los Angeles, California, the Lady Chants fell to second-ranked UCLA and lost a heartbreaker to #17 Fresno State.

Dannelly first came to Coastal in 1984 as an assistant baseball coach on the then-head coach Bobby Richardson’s staff. Following the 1984 season, he left

Coastal to coach high school baseball for one season, but returned to Coastal to resume his assistant coaching duties with the baseball team prior to the 1986

season. He held that position until 1988, when he accepted the head coaching position of the Lady Chanticleers’ softball program.

Dannelly attended USC-Salkehatchie from 1970 to 1972 and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in

Health and Physical Education. He returned to USC-Salkehatchie as the head baseball coach in 1975 and posted a 273-214 (.561) record over nine seasons.

He and his wife, Wendy, live in Conway with their two sons, McKewn and Travis.

1818181818 CCU President Dr. Ronald R. Ingle

Coastal Carolina President Dr. Ron Ingle (left) and Matt Hogue, the Voice

of the Chanticleers, discuss a men’s basketball game on the Chanticleers

Televison Network. Dr. Ingle and his wife Judy are the Chants’ number

one fans as they are cheering at almost every home event.

Ronald R. Ingle has dedicated his career to higher education as a professor and an administrator.

On July 1, 1993, the Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees named him the institution’s first

president at a time when the university was experiencing unprecedented changes as its 34-year affiliation

with the University of South Carolina ended.

Under President Ingle’s leadership, grant funds for faculty research and academic programs increased

230 percent in just one year. Emphasis on computer technology placed Coastal Carolina among the

leaders in computer access for faculty, staff and students. President Ingle also has been responsible for

recruiting outstanding faculty and academic administrators from throughout the nation; faculty salaries

have increased 32.9 percent in six years. In 1998, Coastal Carolina was one of 10 institutions in the

nation, and the only public university, to receive a $500,000 National Science Foundation grant under a

new program entitled Awards for the Integration of Research and Education. A multi-year plan to raise

admissions standards has resulted in an increase of 160 points for the average SAT score for entering

freshmen. An innovative program for older adults and retirees serves more than 900 people and has

earned national recognition. Since 1993, the university has enjoyed a 78 percent increase in annual

giving and the net assets of the Coastal Educational Foundation, Inc., have risen from $5.6 million to $11.5 million.

President Ingle serves on the board of directors of the

American Association of State Colleges and Universities and

the Datatel Scholars Foundation and is a member of the

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission

on Colleges and the Southern Regional Education Boards. As

an advocate for statewide educational coordination, President

Ingle has been a strong voice for restructuring higher education

in South Carolina. His colleagues at the state’s 33 colleges

and universities expressed confidence in his leadership when

they elected him chair of the South Carolina Council of College

and University Presidents in 1995 and 2000.

President Ingle served as interim chancellor of Coastal

Carolina from April 1992 to June 1993 after having served as

vice chancellor for academic affairs since 1988.

Prior to his appointment at Coastal Carolina, President

Ingle was associate dean of the College of Applied and

Professional Sciences at USC Columbia. In addition to his

administrative and teaching responsibilities, he served as

consultant to the World Bank on Tourism Projects in the

Bahamas and as a consultant on tourism in other Caribbean

countries. He developed summer programs for gifted middle school students and the provisional year freshman program at USC Columbia.

He has served on accreditation teams for the Southern Association of Colleges

and Schools. He also has held administrative and faculty positions at Kennesaw

College, South Georgia College, and The Ohio State University. President Ingle is

a tenured professor of psychology and has published numerous professional

articles.

President Ingle earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Wofford

College in 1962, a master’s degree in higher education administration

from Florida State University in 1963, and a doctorate in psychology

from The Ohio State University in 1972. He served a tour of active

duty as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966.

A native of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, he and his wife, Judy,

have two sons: David and Stephen; and one grandson. Judy is director

of reading and language arts for the Georgetown County School District.

She is originally from Florence, Alabama.

2000-2001 George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Winners • Awarded to the top Overall Athletic Department in the Big South Conference

CCU Athletic Director Warren Moose Koegel

Warren D. “Moose” Koegel is in his first full year as the Director of Athletics at Coastal

Carolina University. President Ronald R. Ingle introduced Koegel as the Chanticleers’ fifth

Athletic Director since 1986 on October 6, 2000.

In Koegel’s first months at the helm of the Coastal Carolina Athletic Department, the

Chanticleers flourished both on and off the fields of play. In his short tenure to date, Coastal

has been represented in NCAA Championships in women’s indoor track and field, women’s

outdoor track and field, women’s tennis, men’s golf, softball and baseball. Coastal Carolina

also won the prestigious George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup, awarded annually to the top athletic

department in the Big South Conference. In addition to the work in their sport, Coastal’s 201

student-athletes combined for a 3.038 grade point average during the 2000-2001 academic

year.

As Coastal Carolina’s 16 current NCAA Division I sports continue to flourish, Koegel is

also leading the charge for the Chanticleers 17th sport — football. Football, which will kick-off with the start of the 2003 season,

will compete at the NCAA Division I-AA level. Coastal will begin construction on a 12,000-seat state-of-the-art stadium this

year, as well as a new athletic facility which will house the entire athletic department. The new facility will include an expanded

weight room, training room, team meeting rooms, locker rooms for football and men’s and women’s soccer, offices for all

coaches and staff, and several conference rooms. The facility will also become the new home for the Coastal Carolina University

Athletic Hall of Fame.

Koegel came to Coastal Carolina from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he has served as an associate

athletic director since 1998. He has served on the football coaching staffs at the University of Connecticut, Rutgers University

and Wyoming University. Koegel, who played for five years in the NFL, starred at Penn State University under legendary coach

Joe Paterno.

At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Koegel managed a $5.2 million budget for 16 NCAA

Division I sports. His other administrative responsibilities include

compliance, athletic scholarships, marketing and serving as the

liaison to the coaching staff. He also serves on the steering

committee for the NCAA I-AA National Championship

Football Game. During his tenure on the football

coaching staff at the University of Connecticut

from 1992 to 1997, he was recruiting

coordinator and defensive line coach as well

as interim head coach in 1993. Koegel was an assistant football coach

at Rutgers University from 1984 to 1990 and Wyoming University

from 1977 to 1983.

Prior to his professional career from 1971 to 1976 with the

Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Cardinals and New York Jets, Koegel

was co-captain of the football team at Penn State University, where

he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1971. During his college career he

was a third team All-American during his senior year and played on

two Orange Bowl champion teams. He played in the Hula Bowl, East-

West Shrine Game and the College All-State Game. Koegel received

Penn State’s Dedicated Player and Outstanding Senior Awards.

Koegel and his wife Elaine have one daughter, Kathryn.

2000-2001 George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Winners • Awarded to the top Overall Athletic Department in the Big South Conference

The Big South Conference

The Big South Conference is a progressive NCAA

Division I athletic conference reflecting the energy and

growth of the New South. Founded in 1983, the Big

South Conference has matured in its brief history into

a competitive leader in college athletics, actively

pursuing excellence, both on the field and in the

classroom.

The Conference’s growing presence as an NCAA

Division I athletic league is evident by a bold

basketball television package, a state-of-the art web

site and nine schools committed to excellence, which

will carry the Conference through the 21st century.

The Big South Conference, in its 18th year of

existence, consists of nine member institutions in the

Southeast. Members include: Birmingham-Southern

College, Charleston Southern University, Coastal

Carolina University, Elon University, High Point

University, Liberty University, UNC Asheville,

Radford University and Winthrop University.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Big South is

sponsoring 17 Division I championship programs. That

number will grow to 18 in the Fall of 2002 when the

first Big South football champion will be crowned.

Currently, there are eight championship sports for men:

baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, indoor/

outdoor track and tennis, and nine for women:

basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis,

indoor/outdoor track and volleyball.

This season, Big South champions in all eligible

sports will receive automatic bids to NCAA

Championships (automatic bids are not awarded in

cross country and track and field).

In addition to the Big South’s athletic

accomplishments, the League also honors academic

achievement. Each year the Presidential Honor Roll

and the George A. Christenberry Awards honor

outstanding work in the classroom by the League’s

student-athletes. For the seventh year, the Conference’s

Sports Information Directors will select a Scholar-

Athlete in each Conference sport and a male and female

Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Additionally, the Big South Select-Scholars,

honored by the Conference’s Faculty Athletics

Representatives, will be presented for its third

consecutive year. The League’s outreach program also

includes a Youth Day at which select student-athletes

helped Charlotte-area youngsters realize the

importance of an education with the third annual Youth

Day this past spring.

In May of 1998, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Charleston

Southern President, succeeded Winthrop President Dr.

Anthony DiGiorgio as Conference President. Hunter,

who served as the League’s Vice President under

DiGiorgio, was recently reelected for his second term

as Conference President. Under his leadership, the Big

South continued to push several initiatives focusing

on strategic planning, fiscal integrity, membership,

community involvement and enhancement of athletic

competition.

Dr. DiGiorgio’s leadership served the Conference

well during his tenure. He represented the Big South

nationally as a member of the prestigious President’s

Commission and Board of Directors of the NCAA. He

spent two terms as league President (six years),

succeeding former Radford University President Dr.

Donald Dedmon. Dedmon also spent two terms (six

years) at the helm of the League and played an

instrumental role in establishing the Big South as a

competitive NCAA Division I Conference.

The Conference was formed on August 21, 1983,

when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College)

Athletic Director Howard Bagwell, and Augusta

President George Christenberry initially began

recruiting members into the Big South. One month

later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the

league’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit

new members. By 1984, the League’s charter members

included: Armstrong State, Augusta, Campbell,

Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Radford and

Winthrop.

Not only has the league seen changes in

membership, but in administration as well. In 1989,

George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr.

Singleton as Commissioner. Under his leadership, the

Conference implemented its public relations and

compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever

men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big

South competing among some of the finest teams in

the nation. So integral was Sasser to the growth of the

League, that in 2000 the Conference renamed the

Commissioner’s Cup, the award given to the institution

with the most successful athletic year, to the George

F. Sasser Cup.

In 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser, who

would continue to serve the League as Director of

Athletics at Coastal Carolina University until his

retirement in 1999. Kallander has been instrumental

in aggressively promoting the Conference, including

the development of the Big South Marketing Group,

which has resulted in increased revenues and exposure

for the Conference and its members. He also expanded

the Big South’s television coverage, including the

addition of women’s basketball telecasts, a first in

Conference history. Under Kallander’s leadership the

Big South developed and initiated its first long-range

strategic plan, re-affirming the league’s vision as a

distinctive athletic Conference committed to the

quality of institutional life through athletic

competition.

As college athletics has rolled into the 21st century,

a bold new Big South Conference is emerging,

providing quality athletic competition while

intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social

and athletic development of each student-athlete.

George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup

Coastal Carolina University won the prestigious George

F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup for the fifth time in 2001. The

Sasser Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina

Athletic Director and Big South Commissioner, honors

the top overall athletic department in the Big South

Conference. The award is based on a point system, with

points being awarded based upon each school’s finish in

each of the 17 championships.

The Chanticleers’ five Sasser Cup awards are the most

earned by one school in Big South history. Coastal won

the 2001 award by capturing Big South titles in baseball,

softball, and women’s tennis. Coastal also posted one

second place finish and seven third place finishes. In addition to the Big South honors,

Coastal Carolina was represented in six different NCAA Championships.
