A Message From Our Pastor

This week, every registered household will receive a letter from Bishop Sheridan asking for financial support for the 2019 Returning God's Gifts Annual Appeal.

Once a year, our Bishop asks us to help support the work of our diocesan programs and ministries that provide services that no one parish could support on its own. As one family in faith, we are called to work together to care for the Church by sharing the gifts God has granted us. Our parish goal is $141,661 with 100% participation of our members. Every gift counts, no matter how small.

Please participate and continue God’s work of faith, hope and charity.

In Christ's Peace, Fr. Marek

Online Giving

ParishSOFT’s My Own Giving is an online giving program Pax Christi uses that enables parishioners to make weekly or monthly offerings to the parish electronically. Many of our parishioners are taking advantage of the ease and security this program offers. No more check writing or loss of ability to contribute should you be away from home or unable to come to Mass. Online giving helps Pax Christi's budget and have a consistent, predictable cash flow, too.

You can sign up for the program and find more information about it at http://www.paxchristi.org/home/stewardship-giving/.

Pray the Rosary Starting this month, we will pray a Rosary each weekend, 25 minutes before the start of Mass. Please consider arriving early so we may pray to our Blessed Mother. And, if you have a special intention, this is the perfect time to come and ask Our Blessed Mother for her help with taking our prayer requests to her son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

We pray all 4 mysteries each month: • Week 1 - Joyful • Week 2 - Luminous • Week 3 - Sorrowful • Week 4 - Glorious

We are looking for parishioners to help lead the Rosary at each Mass. Please contact Shannon and Gloria McCubbin at 303-886-4398, if you are interested.

Processions at Mass Processions are misunderstood. At first glance the processions at Mass see to be a mere "show," a spectacle of priest, deacon, and other ministers. The processional moments during the Mass are not meant for us to admire the priest's vestments or the choir robes, or to see just who's bringing down the gifts or who's receiving communion. A procession is not a "a holy parade," but is a motion which visually and even aurally draws us into the act of worship. This walking must look good for the sign to be effective. "Since signs are directed to fellow human beings, they must be humanly attractive. They must be meaningful and appealing to the body of worshippers or they will fail to stir up faith." [Music in Catholic Worship, #7]

There are generally four processions in the Sunday liturgy. The Entrance and Communion Processions are normally accompanied by congregational singing. The other two, the Procession with the Gifts and the Recessional, may be accompanied by song or instrumental music. A fifth procession, that with the Book of Gospels, is sometimes added in solemn celebrations when a deacon is present. This, of course, would be accompanied by the Gospel Acclamation. It is apparent that the Church's use of "procession" implies music. A procession without music is sterile and lifeless. It is just such an opening and closing that the wisdom of the Church's liturgical calendar requires on Good Friday, as the ministers enter and depart in silence. The stark sign is lost here if music does not normally accompany the processions.

In his book Spirit and Song of the New Liturgy, the Reverend Lucien Diess talks about the Entrance procession having a two-fold significance. First, it signifies the coming of Christ, as seen in the entrance of the priest who acts in the person of Christ. Second, it is a sign of the entrance of the people; not a physical entrance, but "an entrance of the people into a state of celebration, into the celebration itself.” The best way for us to enter the celebration is to be united with our fellow worshippers. This is one of the main goals of the Entrance Song. Saint John Chrysostom explains, “As soon as the singing begins, all voices are united and are gathered into a harmonious canticle. Young and old, rich and poor, men and women, slaves and free men, we all sing the same melody. The inequality which exists in the world has been pushed aside, forming a single choir with equal voices, earth imitating heaven. Such is the nobility of the Church!"

St. Elizabeth’s Pantry In Douglas County, 10% of our neighbors must choose between paying the rent, heating their home, or feeding their children.

Our parish’s pantry is open to individuals and families twice per month, enabling visitors to “shop” for non-perishable foods, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Most of our visitors are the working poor who struggle making ends meet. A few are transient homeless. All of our visitors are grateful!

How can you help? • Volunteer! Staff the pantry. Sort food donations. Host

a food drive in your neighborhood or at your child's school.

• Donate! Purchase extra non-perishable foods (see list of needed items below). Give a monetary gift.

• Pray! May God guide the feet of our St. Elizabeth's Pantry visitors as they journey towards self-sufficiency. May the non-perishable foods they receive fill their stomachs. May the loving support they receive from the pantry volunteers fill their hearts.

For more information, please contact Jean Henry at [email protected] or 201-910-1970.

We are in need of the following items: - toothpaste - dental floss - dish detergent - paper towels - oatmeal - pancake mix and syrup - Spam - canned fruit (no pears, please) - single-serving snacks (granola bars, crackers, chips,

fruit snacks) - soup (especially clam chowder, meatball, lentil)

Thank you for your generous support of our pantry!

Liturgy – Are you in it?

Homily - Many elements of the Liturgy have their roots in Judaism. The homily is one of them. It is present in synagogue celebrations and some even see its origins during the time of Moses. (Dt 31:9-13)

The Israelites read the Tora during holy gatherings. This way, it made people familiar with Sacred Scripture. After many years, this form became a problem for many people because everything was written in Hebrew, but the majority of people used an Aramaic language. It was the way they communicated on a regular basis. In the Book of Nehemiah (Ne 8:8), we can see how the prophet Ezra celebrated the proclamation of the Word. He read from the Book of the Law of God, translated it and made sense of the words so the reading was understood. It was an Aramaic paraphrase of the text called: “meforas we som sekel.” It is also called a midrash and was spontaneous and improvised.

Here it is how it went: A translator took his place next to the lector and translated the text. In the case of the Tora, he translated it line by line. In the case of the text from the prophets (haftara), he translated every three verses at once, so the person explaining the text had time to prepare the explanation. The Tora was paraphrased sometimes by several people, but just one for the prophets. From this practice, we have a tradition that began in the 4th century before Christ – the synagogue teaching.

There also was a second problem. After the Babylonian diaspora, there was a lot of the Tora and prophets in the verbal tradition. The lack of text pushed towards creation of the commentaries. People who used to proclaim the Word and give an interpretation were called “darsanim.” There were many exceptions they had to follow. Therefore, they used the help from other translators and interpreters.

In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul is invited to participate in this tradition. (Ac 13:15-16)

The first Christians continued many of these traditions and customs and turned them into their own liturgy. Their homilies were connected with the readings and had more introducing character than instructing. It was a way to help people participate in the Mystery of the Eucharist: they were living words that are here and now.

In the beginning, the homily was reserved for the bishop because of his function in the Church and his being intellectually prepared. Later on, this privilege was given to the priest, as well. The tradition of the homily varies depending on the region of the Church. We can see differences between the western and eastern Church.

Point Men Men, come join the “Pax Christi Point Men” for fellowship and faith-sharing. We meet every Friday morning in the church hall from 6:00 to 7:20 a.m.

Each week we serve a hearty breakfast, followed by a video on our Catholic Faith; ending with a fellowship discussion on the video. It’s a great opportunity to grow in our Catholic Faith with other men of the Parish. We are currently watching a series on Fr. Emil Kaplan, a Korean War chaplain who gave his life for his men. It’s an incredibly inspiring series, teaching us how to grow in our faith through the three pillars of Stewardship - Hospitality, Prayer, and Formation.

Please join us next Friday!
