FIRST SUNDAYOF LENT

February 21, 2021

February 21, 2021 Holy Name of Jesus Church Page 2

This weekend we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. Lent officially began on Ash Wednesday and technically ends prior to the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. Lent is a penitential season during which time we call to mind our sins and ask God to help us over-come our sins and seek His forgiveness. During this time, we are encouraged to follow the three recommended practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. For your information, the Church calls all who have reached their fourteenth birthday to abstain from eating meat on all the Fridays of Lent. On Good Friday, in addition to abstaining from meat, the Church also asks those from the ages of 14 until their 60th birthday to limit oneself to one full meal and two smaller meals. Pope Francis offers these ideas to practice fasting: “Fast from hurting words and say kind words. Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude. Fast from anger and be filled with patience. Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope. Fast from worries and trust in God. Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity. Fast from pressures and be prayerful. Fast from bitterness and fill your heart with joy. Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others. Fast from grudges and be reconciled. Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.”

We are also invited to practice additional activities such as attending weekday Mass, praying the Stations of the Cross at home, praying the rosary, reading and praying the Scriptures, practicing Eucharistic Adoration and doing some spiritual reading. For those interested in praying as part of a community, we pray the Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent at 7:30 PM; the rosary and pious devotions after the 9:00 AM weekday Masses, and Eucharistic Adoration follows the 9:00 AM Mass every Wednesday. The Spiritual Life Committee suggested we offer all parishioners the Nail of Redemption to carry in our pockets, purses and/or jackets or to keep by our prayer books. The practice of distributing the Nail of Redemption is followed in many Churches and is presented to you as a reminder that you are loved by God so much that He sent us His Son to suffer and die that we might have eternal life. This prayerful reflection might assist you in your quiet reflection and prayer: “Christ was nailed to the cross on Calvary. Often people will meditate on the nail on Good Friday …. Nails are used for construction and, in God’s irony, the Roman centurion executioners, when nailing Jesus to the cross, unknowingly constructed for the faithful an eternal dwelling place in heaven ….. [God] grant me the grace to unite my sufferings with those of Jesus so that You may sanctify me through [my] trails. Amen.” Catholic Faith Network (our Diocesan network) is making available the opportunity for all parish-ioners to participate in a Lenten Retreat entitled The Search. All the episodes will be broadcast on CFN (Optimum 29). It is a 7-part video-based spiritual experience hosted by nationally known au-thor and speaker, Chris Stefanick. If your faith is already solid, The Search will help you deepen it. If you’re feeling unsure, it’s for you too. If you’re worried about your children or grandchildren, invite them to join you. The Search features scientists, artists, philosophers, and other people from all walks of life proclaiming how their searches for meaning in life led them to Jesus and His Gospel. The Search proclaims the Gospel in words that modern ears can make sense of, and images that modern eyes can’t help but see and remember. Begins Thursday at 8:00 pm

Sunday February 21, 2021 First Sunday of Lent FOCUS: The First Sunday of Lent. We ask God to change us in ways that will unite us ever more closely with God’s will. In the first reading, the colors of the rainbow assure Noah of God’s love and care. In the second reading, Peter speaks of the salvation we gain through the waters of Baptism. In the Gospel, Jesus prepares for his Galilean ministry by being tempted by Satan for 40 days in the desert.

the faithful an eternal dwelling in heaven, established for believers through the Master Architect Who was nailed to the cross. LORD,

dying for You is difficult and painful, yet You call me to death to my own self so that I may live eternally with You. As I am fastened

Lenten Opportunity

Our parish has always offered many opportunities to deepen our faith during this Penitential Season. Unfortunately, this year many parishioners find themselves unable to participate in some of them because of Covid 19.

Therefore, we want to encourage you to take advantage of our well-stocked library. You will find several recommended selections on the credenza. Most of the books are easy and fast reading as well as interesting and thought provoking. So please consider taking a look at some of the offerings and borrow one or more to read in the comfort of your home.

We adhere to public library guidelines in that returned books are not re- shelved for 3-4 days after return. There is a box especially for returned books.

During COVID, although we are not able to visit our 3 nursing homes, we would like

to send each of the Christian residents an Easter card to cheer them up and to let

them know that we think of them often and pray for them every week. Since the 3

nursing homes combined have about 600 Christians, this endeavor will need many

volunteer scribes to write the cards. Each volunteer will be provided with a page of

messages to choose from and cards should have a greeting of Dear Friend. Cards will

be provided in packets of 10 and 20. Please pick up the number of packets that you

are willing to write; packets of cards are located in the narthex. A box to place your

completed cards will be left in the narthex; all cards must be returned by Palm Sun-

day. If you take more cards than you can complete, please return them to the narthex

where you had picked them up.

Dear Friends: As we journey together through this Lenten season, let us call to mind all our brothers and sisters on Long Island who are in need. One of the ways we can assist our neighbors and the Church is through giving to the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). For all of you who have given to the CMA in the past, I would like to say thank you. Your gifts have helped bring the loving face of Jesus to hundreds of thousands of Long Is-landers. Each year, the CMA creates pathways of faith that guide all people to our loving Father. This year, the CMA needs your help, more now than ever before, in our efforts to spread the Good News throughout Long Island. Last year was a challenge for everyone. As the pandemic surged through our Long Island community, pastoral care was expanded to those in need. Catholic Charities programs expanded its food programs to seniors and our parish outreach programs re-mained open; the Education Department was able to provide internet service to families that did not have it so that children could continue their studies and parents could continue to work; Faith Formation, Young Adult Ministry and Youth Ministry programs were able to remotely bring the faith to God’s people. All of this was accomplished because of your support and prayers. We humbly ask you to please consider giving to the CMA so that we can make this year’s Appeal grow substantially in gifts, so that everyone who comes to the Church for help may receive it. Additionally, the CMA helps raise funds that help feed the poor, clothe the naked, and assist our veterans and people with disabilities. The CMA also assists women with untimely pregnancies who need assistance and seminarians who are following God’s call to the priesthood. Our parish will also receive a share of the funds if we reach at least 80% of our parish goal; the more money our parish raises, the more we will receive in rebates. These rebates are so essential to our parish, so we ask that you also think of your parish when you give the CMA. During these 40 days, as we are called by our Lord to grow closer to Him through prayer, fasting and alms-giving, the CMA allows us to practice the virtuous act of almsgiving and to spread the Good News within and beyond our parish. Whatever you give, thank you for helping to create pathways of faith on Long Island. May God bless you, your family and this year’s CMA. Blessings, Fr. Bauhoff
