Fabulous fun family February has arrived. The middle of winter is the time to celebrate all things family and TGCA welcomes the opportunity to have neighborhood fam-ilies join together to celebrate. Our weekend celebration begins Friday, February 8 with the most famous jam can curling tournament the city has ever seen. The 56 will be rocking that night as well with bowling and family time. This year’s celebration of winter sports weekend is going to end off with a fabulous family dance on the Saturday afternoon and we hope to see all of you there. The weekend activities allow a chance for members to meet with friends and be active as public skating and sledding will be a focal point on the Saturday afternoon a perfect way to chase away the winter blues.

As most of you know, we are looking forward to the spring as the playground group finally gets to see the fruits of their labor come together. TGCA has decided to use any profits generated from this February week-end’s activities to help the group achieve their goals. We are putting together a donor wall in the main hall foyer recognizing all the generous donors that make this fabulous inclusive destination playground a reality. The group is doing their last push for funding to get all the apparatuses together to make this playground excep-tional. There is still time to donate and be a part of this great project. Money is not the only way members can help. The group is also looking for volunteers to bring their work force and help in the spring to erect the ap-paratus. TGCA thanks Maureen and Amanda for bring-ing this project together and thanks them for bring-ing the project to our facility. These two women have worked extremely hard over the last five years to make this vision a reality and we are the beneficiaries of this wonderful family playground. Together we can make this happen and transform our grounds into something wonderful for Thorncliffe Greenview.

January has been a busy month; we have had a retire-ment from our staff. Terry Douglas has left the work force after 28 years of dedicated service to spend more time with his family. Terry helped build this community not only through his dedicated service but also through his volunteering. He was instrumental in setting up a slow pitch league for adults that ran through the sum-mer months and could be counted on to help organ-

ize and run events whenever TGCA had a fun weekend dedicated to family. Terry spent hours running Jam Can Curling for the Winterfest and organized fun snow pitch tournaments and throw back wooden bat tournaments that provided fun for all members. He and his family are a part of the fabric of the community. Thank you, Terry, for your friendship and dedication TGCA wishes much happiness as you move forward into the next part of your life’s journey.

Thank you goes out to Dianne Stewart and her volleyball group for providing volunteers to work the Arms Show event in January. Congratulations to the Cobras on win-ning the annual January volleyball tournament. Thanks as well to all those who helped with the organization of this year’s celebration of winter sports. Volunteers make our community great and we have some very dedicat-ed, caring people who consistently give their time for the benefit of the community and its members. We are a very lucky community to have such wonderful people. I hope everyone comes down to the community in Feb-ruary and joins in the fun. If you run into one of our great volunteers say thank you and put a smile on a face.

recycling tip: snow and recyclables don’t mix!Calgary weather can bring lots of snow throughout the winter. Remember to clear the snow off your blue cart lid and keep the lid closed before putting your recycling out for pickup.

Why? When snow gets into your blue cart it melts and ruins the paper and other quality recyclables. Thanks for your help in recycling right Calgary!

good food box program

What is the Good Food Box? It’s a monthly pro-gram where community members can buy fresh fruit and vegetables for a very low cost. Thorn-cliffe Greenview Community Association now has a Good Food Box Depot. You receive top quality produce at wholesale prices. There are three sizes of boxes to choose from. The large box ($35.00) contains 40 plus pounds of produce. The medium box ($30.00) contains 30 plus pounds of produce. The small box ($25.00) contains 20 plus pounds of produce. You only order the size you want, when you want. How do you get a food box? Bring your exact cash to the Horizon Room at Thorncliffe Greenview Community Centre between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. on the scheduled pick up day. This will secure your order for the next month or bring your exact cash to the Administration Office no later than the order deadline listed below.

&@#$! CyClists!

Q: This is a very specific question and even though it isn’t in Thorncliffe, I need an answer because my wife and I have a bet.

It’s about the intersection of Northmount Dr. and Cam-brian Dr. just east of 14th Street. There’s a new bike lane on the right side painted green as you approach 14th heading west. Not all the lane is green though. The ‘dashed’ green part makes sense to me because cars need to cross over it to turn right on 14th. The confusion occurs when the right-turning lane is full of cars and they back up into the bike lane. My wife thinks that cars can wait in the bike lane be-cause it’s a lane like any other. I say no because now people on bikes have nowhere to go, and so cars should leave the bike lane open.

a: If I understand this correctly, what you’re actually ask-ing me is if a car is allowed to use a bike lane if the need is great. The answer is non. A bike lane is not “contingen-cy space” for cars when roads are busy. No parking, driv-ing, or waiting in a bike lane if you are a motor vehicle. Your wife is mistaken. Cars wanting to turn right (North) onto 14th must wait their turn like everyone else. Do not enter an intersection unless you know you can leave it before the light changes. I’ve seen cars sit in the middle of that intersection blocking other cars and bikes under the guise of waiting for space. It’s ridiculous and creates a dangerous situation for pedestrians wanting to cross and forces cyclists to break traffic laws…which in turn makes motorists apoplectic. Common sense, mes amis, is to be used liberally when driving.

À la prochaine mes petits choux!

The scouting year up to the end of 2018 has been a busy one. We began the year in September with a bunch of camps, a successful bottle drive and popcorn fundrais-ing. We continued the year with linking events that in-cluded our beavers, cubs, Venturers and rovers such as our Halloween party and a Halloween camp with other scout groups from Calgary. We had a sleepover and movie night with pizza and board games at the Scout Hall on Brownsea Drive. We are planning another camp with our cub group in January and one in Banff in Febru-ary with lots of winter fun activities planned. Alberta’s challenges are Canada’s challenges. Our prov-ince needs to have a pipeline built because Alberta’s well-being is also Canada’s well-being. While our govern-ment continues to push the federal government through a series of frustrating delays, we’re also taking action to do whatever we can get full value for Alberta oil.

Moving oil by rail. Premier Notley announced that Al-berta is making crucial investments in new rail capac-ity to get our oil to market. This new rail capacity will have the ability to move 120,000 barrels a day and will reduce the oil price differential by up to $4 per barrel, generating more than $1 million per day in new federal revenues.

short-term production cuts. In December, Premier Notley announced that an 8.7 per cent reduction in oil production to draw down excess storage and get bet-ter returns for our resources. Due to insufficient pipeline and rail capacity, 35 million barrels of oil were in stor-age—twice the normal levels. The production cut will narrow the oil-price differential, adding an estimated $1.1 billion of government revenue and reducing price volatility.

upgrading in alberta. Our Petrochemical Diversifica-tion Program is designed to build manufacturing capac-ity that upgrades our natural resources. Typically, this involves upgrading our feedstocks into more valuable products, such as plastics, fabrics and fertilizers. It has already attracted $6 billion in new private investment and will create up to 4,200 jobs during construction and 240 full-time jobs once operations begin.

Refining in alberta. As part of our made-in-Alberta strategy to get more value for our resources, our gov-ernment is evaluating business cases for investing in a new refinery in Alberta. Building a new refinery would create good-paying, long-term jobs for Albertans, and would ensure we get full value for the energy resources owned by all Albertans.

The Calgary Parks Department is in the process of revising the 1998 Integrated Pest Management Plan and Council Policy (CSPS017). The update will consider pest manage-ment on all City lands, including natural areas. The most common pests are weeds, insects, some animals, and dis-eases. The 2017 City Pesticide Use report lists the prod-ucts, amount used, and reasons for use. In Winter 2019, a proposed policy draft will be shared with stakeholders for feedback. Then, the report will be sent to the City Council Committee on Community and Protective Services.

It is estimated that 270+ species of birds make Calgary their home. There are birding courses and guided walks to improve your bird-watching skills. We host a Nose Hill Birding Walk for International Migratory Bird Day and a Flower Walk to discuss the May Count of Plants in Bloom. www.fonhs.org.

Welcome to Alberta Birds is a public group on Facebook. The purpose is to provide a forum in which Alberta bird-ers and birdwatchers can post information, photos of re-cent sightings, and ask for advice on bird identification or equipment. Let others know about birdrelated events in our province and share a general love of birds. Members at all levels are welcome. Relevant group content will only be photos or videos of birds in Alberta. What birds visit your feeders? Which birds do you see in your neighbour-hood? Alberta Backyard Birds is a private Facebook group you can join to post your photos, with fun or interesting news about wild birds you see, or other wildlife out and about in Alberta.

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is a natural environment park. The Facebook group has a City website link. You can book Parks group programs for adults or children, youth and school programs, drop-in and day camps. The park was registered as a Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary, in 1929. In 1953, the Alberta Fish & Game Association leased the land. In 1970, the City purchased the property and now manages it. The Nature Centre was built, in 1996, when the grassland restoration projects began. The new re-gional park, based on nearby open spaces, will be called Bend in the Bow.
