Dear Parents,

In the December/January newsletter, I wrote to you about our “Morning Rally” initiative, which is part of our Advisory Program. Currently we run our advisory bell schedule three days per week – Morning Rally on Mon-days, and advisory lessons on Wednesday and Friday. The advisory period is approximately 30 minutes long.

Beginning February 12, our school will move to having the advisory bell schedule for all five days of the week. The additional two days each week will be dedicated to Interventions/Independence time. We will refer to these additional days as Marlin Block. Our schedule will look like this:

Allow me to explain what Marlin Block is all about:

The purpose of Marlin Block is to create an opportunity for students to receive intervention if they need it, or to give them an opportunity for some supervised independent time if they don’t. Which students will receive interventions will be determined in a variety of ways. One tier of intervention will be determined weekly by the student’s current grade in a core subject – language arts, science, social studies, and foreign language (for 8th grade only). If the student’s grade is a “C” or lower in any of those classes, they will go to that teacher for intervention time. During this intervention time, students can ask questions, make up assessments, or just get caught up with some work – much like what they do during Thursday morning Office Hours. For mathemat-ics, some students will be offered a more specialized intervention based on multiple data pieces such as stand-ardized test scores and teacher input. This math intervention will focus on skills relating directly to PARCC success. Recall that PARCC scores are a determining factor in the course selection process for math. Stu-dents in the specialized math intervention groups will receive a letter providing detail.

Those students whose grades are a “B” or higher in all areas will have an opportunity for some independent time. These students will report to one of four areas in our building for the following activities:

CAFETERIA…….……...Sit-down Social Time MARLIN HALL……………………….……....Educational Video Watch GYM…….…...Organized Play or Study Hall MEDIA/COMPUTER LAB………….Study Hall / Computer Lab use Students will rotate through these four activities so they can experience each setting. There are many reasons why we have decided to engage in this additional program. Some students can’t come to Thursday Morning Office Hours due to transportation issues or other

obligations. Make-up work and re-dos can be done in a more timely manner. Teachers are giving up a lot of their lunch time to help students. Offers an intervention time for students during the students’ day – while they are here! Allows for specialized intervention possibilities for AACPS intentional focus. Contributes to Quarterly Assessment and PARCC success.

A great deal of effort has been put into the planning of the new Marlin Block. Even so, I am sure that there will be some issues to iron out after it begins on February 12. Please be assured that as the process unfolds, we will be looking for ways to improve or enhance this new program. Your suggestions are welcome. Sincerely, Christopher Mirenzi

Also From the Principal…

Bravo to the MRMS community for the extraordinary support

provided for the Cool Schools Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy

Point State Park on January 25!!! We had a fantastic day! The

sun was shining, the water was a chilly 35 degrees, and nearly 200 people from our

school ran into the Chesapeake Bay! We want to thank all the students, parents,

community and staff for their donations. Out of 73 schools in the state of Maryland

that participated in the Polar Bear Plunge, Magothy came in second overall and is

the top middle school. Our goal was to raise $20,000 and with all your effort, so

far we have donated $25,899. What a fantastic achievement for our

school and community. We should all be very proud! We want to

especially recognize Lilly K. and Jackson V. for donating over $1000

each. THANK YOU to all who participated!

Yet another sign of our community’s involvement in service opportunities was our

annual Blood Drive on January 31. Nearly 40 people from the Broadneck Peninsula gave of

their time and their blood to support this most worthy cause. Here are

some facts to consider:

More than 4.5 million patients need blood transfusions each year in the U.S. and Canada. 43,000 pints: amount of donated blood used each day in the U.S. and Canada. About 1 in 7 people entering a hospital need blood. Someone needs blood every two seconds. Only 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood – less than 10 percent do annually. One pint of blood can save up to three lives.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

6th GRADE

Mrs. Bradshaw - Mathematics

Navigator mathematicians have been enjoying their journey into the wonderful world of

integers. Students applied integers to real-world situations, explored absolute value and

graphed in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane – FUN!! Math 6/7 students also got to

add and subtract, multiply and divide integers.

Coming Soon - Exponents, Order of Operations, Properties and Writing and Solving Equations.

All students took their Quarterly Assessment in math for the second marking period during the

week of January 22nd.

Mr. Fletcher - Social Studies

Students are in the process of presenting their research projects for Project Citizen. After

we are done, we will jump back into Ancient Rome for a couple weeks, then begin learning about

Africa from ancient times all the way to modern day. The Africa Unit is always has high inter-

est level for the students as many don't know too much about it.

Hamilton - Language Arts

During the 3rd Quarter we will focus on the Big Idea of “Change”

When is it necessary to make a change?

How does change impact our lives?

How do people change based on their situation

Students will be analyzing several narrative texts. Also, they will

review before, during, and after reading strategies to extend

meaning of both narrative and expository text. In addition,

students will conduct research about a specified topic and con-

struct a prose constructed response.

Mrs. Ebersberger - Science

Students finished their unit on Cells by creating Cell Analogies

where they compared the cell and the cell parts to some-

thing else. They did an outstanding job and will be putting

these in their portfolios! Students wrapped up the Unit 2 with

a Quarterly and will now be preparing for their next Unit

called Maryland Pride!

News from the Mariners

Congratulations go to December and January’s

student of the month recipients:

Gavin B., Manuela B., Axel C., Anabel C.,

Caroline F., Kevin M., Samantha M., Harry W.

Language Arts News from Mrs. Janota: Mrs. Janota's Language Arts students have embarked upon their second Novel Study. Each student selected a book that interested them. In every class there are about 5 groups of students reading the same book. During class students focus on different elements of literature and work together in small groups to unlock the author's message within a variety of instructional structures. So far we have taken Conflict Gallery Walks, and created Instagram Profiles for their characters. Reading is Fun!!

Math News from Mrs. Plitt: By the end of January we will have finished our study of integers and the coordinate plane. Our next unit of study will be “Equations and Expressions.” Students will learn how to write expressions to represent mathematical situations, use the order of operations and how to write and solve exponents. As we hit the mid-year point, please check your child’s supply of pencils and paper. Now is a good time to replenish! :) Feel free to contact me anytime through schoolnotes or my county email [email protected]. I’m looking for-ward to a great third quarter! Mrs. Plitt Science News From Ms. Thompson: WOW! We are halfway through the school year! Students are doing a great job learning lots of new content and technologies :) As we prepare for the 3rd Marking Period, I have a few requests. Please consider buying a NEW COMPOSITION BOOK and glue sticks. It always feels good to start fresh with new school supplies. Ms. Thompson will be purchasing class sets of earbuds to use with our Science Chrome-books. Earbuds will be assigned to students, labeled with their name and stored in the science class-room. If students prefer to use a personal set, then please send in a pair of inexpensive earbuds that can be kept in the science classroom with your name on them. ALL SCIENCE FAIR POSTERS AND TRI-FOLDS SHOULD GO HOME BY FEB. 1ST. The final projects look Great, but there isn't enough room in our class-room to store them. Requested Donations: glue sticks, pretty duct tape, Maryland-themed decorations, composition books. Thank you for your support :) Social Studies News from Ms. Senft: At the beginning of the 3rd marking period, the TARDIS will land in sub-Saharan Africa where students will explore the geography of this great continent. Our studies of Africa will continue throughout the 3rd MP covering the West African Kingdoms, African Slave Trade, colonialism, and Apartheid in South Africa. My social studies news email blasts are going out. Please let me know if you signed up and are not receiving them, or if you’d like to be added to the list. [email protected] As always, thank you for your support.

Marlin Night – Our team will be filling the Sports Basket for the Marlin Night Silent Auction. If you have items to be donated to our basket, please bring them in to Mrs. Phillips. Although Marlin Night is not until the end of April, we are accepting donations now to get a head start and have the best-selling basket! Prepare for Third Marking Period – Please check with your child to be sure they still have the school supplies they need. They may need to restock on lined paper, pencils, pens, etc. We need…The 7th grade teachers are in need of boxes of tissues. Please consider donating a box or two or three to a teacher in need. Bring tissues to Mrs. Phillips to distribute to the 7th grade team. From Science - During 3rd quarter, students will explore Newton’s Laws, potential and kinetic energy, and the transfer of energy. The focus of the unit will be forces and interactions of forces. Students are expected to demonstrate proficien-cy in developing and using models, analyzing and interpreting data, designing solutions, and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information. Students will use these scientific and engineering practices to demonstrate understanding of the disciplinary core ideas. From Language Arts - In January we completed a PBA (Project Based Assessment) with a focus on Research of a Social Injustice. Students produced impressive Google Slides Presentations for their final products. We wrapped up the mark-ing period with our Novel Event where students had a choice between two non-fiction autobiographies: Gifted Hands: The Story of Ben Carson and I am Malala. This marking period the students will read a true variety of literature- realistic fiction short story, teleplay, narrative his-torical poem, and two science fiction short stories- to explore the big idea: Authors' Choices. They will continue to rou-tinely write and support their answers with evidence from the text. In REC READING news... all students will receive their book choice on 2/7th and will read their book at home inde-pendently in preparation for our Recreational Reading group discussions on Wednesday, February 28th. REMINDER: To be added to my weekly "LA News" email, please send me an email at [email protected]. From Social Studies – In 7th Grade social studies, the month of February will be spent studying the Middle East region of Asia. The primary topics of study within this dynamic area of the world will include the history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, oil and politics, Arab Spring, and the current Syrian refugee crisis. We will be examining the Middle East through a variety of lenses with an enhanced focus on the students’ reading, writing, and analytical skills in prepara-tion for the PARCC exam. As the curriculum continues to increase in difficulty as we progress through the school year, it will be imperative that students study for assessments and come prepared to class. As always, thank you for your sup-port! From Math – Math 7 students are starting chapter 4 on expressions. We will be writing, simplifying and evaluating alge-braic and numeric expressions. Math 7/8 students are starting their new unit on geometry. Our first focus will be on using scale to enlarge or shrink, drawing geometric figures, scaling up/down triangles and special angle relationships. All students should be bringing their textbook home daily to study content from class. Go online to www.pearsonrealize.com to access extra videos and extra practice.

7th GRADE

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Class Information

Language Arts: In the month of February, we will read “The Charge of the Light Brigade”, “Dark They Were & Golden-Eyed”, and “The Last Dog”. The latter two pieces will be the basis of a comparative literary analysis essay that students will complete the first week of March. This essay will require them to analyze a common theme found between the two texts. Additionally, students will pick their spring Recreational Reading novels on February 26th. Their graded book discussion on these novels will take place on March 27th.

Social Studies: Social Studies will be studying the Middle East during the third marking period. We will look at the social, political, economic, and geographical history of this region as well as the historical implications on modern life. We will also explore the idea of being a responsible citizen with technology both within the school day and beyond. Syllabus expectations including grading, attendance, and behavior will be thoroughly reviewed with all classes as well to ensure a smooth transition to a new quarter and a new semester. Students should be well supplied and ready to go with assignments completed. Positive energy and attitudes are also expected and reciprocated!

Science: During 3rd quarter, students will explore Newton’s Laws, potential and kinetic energy, and the transfer of energy. The focus of the unit will be forces and interactions of forces. Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in developing and using models, analyzing and interpreting data, designing solutions, and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information. Students will use these scientific and engineering practices to demonstrate understanding of the disciplinary core ideas.

Math 7 (Mr. Mangold & Mrs. Bragaw) & Math 7/8 (Mr. Mangold) - Both classes recently completed their second quarterly. Math 7 will be working on Topic 4, which involves expressions, equations, and inequali-ties. A very challenging and important topic in this curriculum. Math 7/8 will be working on two Geometry Units (Topics 5 & 6). All students are starting to understand the rigor that is involved in the 7th grade, and are improving in their test taking skills, as well as their preparation for quizzes and tests. I encourage all parents to work with your children a little bit on how they prepare for quizzes and tests. Their textbook is a huge resource and should be coming home every night for the students to review the material from that days class. I look forward to a great 3rd quarter, and I'm enjoying watching my students grow. Any ques-tions, feel free to email me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Ms. Carr: Language Arts Mrs. Lewis: Social Studies

MRMS ANNUAL FRENCH CLASSES TRIP TO QUEBEC CITY

On August 7, 2009 a 1,062 lb. Blue Marlin was caught at the Baltimore Canyon off the coast of Delaware. Did you ever wonder

if any Blue Marlins have been caught in the Chesapeake Bay? How about the St. Lawrence River in Canada? Well, from February 21st-25th 38 Magothy River Middle School Marlins, their parents, Mrs.

Cosby and Ms. Hillary Murphy will leave the comfort of the Ma-gothy River to visit the ice-covered St. Lawrence River in Quebec City, Quebec!! These marlins will be enjoying all sorts of fun activities including: touring the only fortified

city in North America, dog-sledding, snowshoeing, snow tubing, visiting a Huron-Wendake Indian Reservation, dancing at an authentic Sugar Shack, visiting the Mont-morency Falls and, most importantly, practicing their French!! Bon Voyage Les Marlins!!

All of the Dance classes, Dance for Athletes classes, and the Dance Company

are required to perform in the Magothy River Spring Dance Concert held at

Broadneck HS on Wednesday, May 30 and Thursday, May 31 at 7PM. Dance

parents received a letter about this performance in October, and were told to put

the dates on the family calendar. Mrs. Saint Amour will select ONE date for

each dance class, however the 8th grade Dance classes and the Dance Company

will perform on both evenings. Students will take a bus to Broadneck HS from

MRMS on the day of the performance for a dress rehearsal on the stage prior to

concert time. We look forward to performing for you!

Did you know that our Dance Company was one of a few middle school companies selected to be in the

High School Gala at the county dance festival? It is an honor for us! The Dance Company will represent our

school in the county dance festival in 4 performances! Wish the dancers good luck at these concerts:

Severna Park HS on Saturday, February 3

HEALTH ROOM NEWS FROM THE HEALTH ROOM

We are in the midst of a severe flu season. Influenza or “flu” is a respiratory infection caused by a virus,

which is transmitted through nasal and respiratory secretions (sneezes and coughs). Symptoms of the flu in-

clude: fever, chills, cough, runny nose, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue.

Tips to Stay Healthy: Get your flu vaccination as soon as possible!

Cover that cough or sneeze!

Avoid touching your face (mouth, nose or eyes).

Clean all contaminated surfaces (door knobs, phones, counters etc).

WASH YOUR HANDS! This is the easiest and best way to prevent infection!

If you are sick, STAY HOME to prevent infecting others at school or work.

(Attached are guidelines when to keep your child home from school.)

Please remind your child about the importance (and safety!) of dressing appropriately for cold weather, espe-

cially for any outdoor activity or waiting at the bus stop. Appropriate footwear is also important to prevent

falling on icy or wet surfaces.

Please notify the Health Room of any injury that requires your child to use a cast, splint or crutches, so that

we can help with safe mobility during school and plan for emergency exits.

All medications require a completed school medication form completed by both the parent and a physician.

All medication must be brought to the Health Room by an adult. Do not send any medication to school

with your child. A physician’s self-carry order and Health Room approval are required before a student may

self-carry emergency medication in school.

*** Per MRMS Administrative policy, a physician’s note is required for use of a personal water bottle during

class.

Parents of new students: Please return the completed Record of Physical Examination form to the Health

Room as soon as possible. (This is a green form that was provided to you at the time of school registration).

Vision and Hearing screening will be held at MRMS on March 22, 2018 for all 8th grade students and stu-

dents new to Anne Arundel County. If you have concerns about your child’s vision or hearing, please contact

the Health Room directly at 410-431-8873.

Thank you! Jane Lefavor, RN and Kim Biggs, Health Assistant 410-431-8873

Important Information for 6th Grade Parents

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you may know, there is a new state requirement regarding the documentation of two additional immunizations for all students entering 7th grade each year. Before your student can enter 7th grade next year, you must provide written proof that he/she has received a Tdap (tetanus/ pertussis booster) and a Meningococcal vaccine.

These immunizations are not "new", but the documentation requirement for school entry is new.

These immunizations are typically given at the 11 year old well-child evaluation. If your child has already had an 11 year old well-child appointment, these immunizations may have already been given.

If your child has not had a well check-up, contact your health care provider as soon as possible to set up an appointment for these immunizations

Please contact your pediatrician to request a copy of your child’s immunization record.

Copies can be sent to MRMS:

By Fax: 410-544-1867 (please call to verify receipt)

By Email: [email protected]

By Mail: MRMS

Attn Health Room

241 Peninsula Farm Road

Arnold, MD 21012

In Person: to the MRMS Health Room or Main Office

Students will be excluded from school entry this September if the school has not received required documentation of these immunizations.

Please contact the MRMS Health Room with any questions.

Other Fantastic News!

On January 12th, 2018, Cameron & McKenna L. participated in a 100 mile bike ride called Bike to the Beach: Key Largo - Key West, which took 8 hours! McKenna and Cameron are fraternal twins, when McKenna was 2 years old she was diagnosed with Autism…Now McKenna is in 7th grade and Cameron is in 8th at Magothy River Middle School. Cameron started participating in 100 mile bike rides in July of 2016 at the age of 12 She has been submitted for a world record of “youngest girl to finish a century bike ride” but Cameron cannot be put in the world records because she is under 16.

Congratulations to Seth H. an 8th grader here at

Magothy. He is the first place winner of the Americanism/

Patriotism Essay Contest for all 8th graders. This essay

contest was sponsored by the Fleet Reserve Association

of America. Seth's essay is entered in the Regional Competition and could

possibly be advanced to the National level for the Grand Prize of $5,000. Also,

congratulations to Ryan Q. for winning second place and Clementine M. for

winning third place out of all the 8th grade essays submitted for the

Americanism/Patriotism essay contest. Way to go Seth, Ryan and Clementine!

Thank you to Mrs. Nenno, Mrs. Glennon and all the MRMS students for sending over 700 cards and notes to our troops overseas during the holidays. The cards and notes were a reminder that our service men and women are remembered at all times and especially during the holidays as they serve around the world.
