CKI’s answer on Sunday, January 17, was to help replenish the food pantry and to help neighbors in need. Our members provided 140 bags of groceries. WOW!

Thank you to the students and parents who loaded the bags fortransportation on a cold Sunday morning. Andthanks, also, to Dr. Liz Bromet for having a carbig enough to help deliver them fordistribution.

someone is in the hospital or recovering in arehab center or back at home. With the HIPAArules, hospitals no longer can call me directly.

As I sit by people’s bedsides I am continuallyamazed at the rabbis of the Talmud who had itright. Yes, our bodies are finely balancednetworks. When they work correctly, they areglorious things. When one part begins to fail, itcan jeopardize the rest.

In the case of some of these illnesses it maymean facing the decision to move fromindependent living to another level of care. Thisis a big transition as well.

Judaism provides structures to help getthrough transitions. Havdalah, the ceremony atthe end of Shabbat, is one such moment, whenwe separate Shabbat from the rest of the week, when we separate the sacred from the profane. It acknowledges that going back to the workweek is a bittersweet experience.

Adding a leap month is another way to marktransitions. This year is a leap year both on theAmerican calendar and on the Jewish calendar. The Jewish calendar adds a whole leap monthto keep the holidays in correct seasons. SoPassover comes in Spring, Rosh Hashanah inFall (it will be late this year but still Fall!) andChanukah in Winter. This “autocorrect” helps uswith the transitions from one season to thenext.

So yes, February is a tough month oftransitions, but Spring is coming. Really, it is.And there are lots of things to celebrate at CKI.

“We are family. I got all mysisters with me!” That’saccording to the singing group,

Sister Sledge. For our Sisterhood, those wordsseem very applicable.

For me, personally, the last several months havebeen rather difficult. It is always tough to watcha loved one’s health declining. There are severalcongregants that recently and/or currentlyhave been in this position. Sue Johnsonreferred to us as the “Sisterhood of Daughters.”While it is true that this situation has also beenaffecting some of our guys, this phrase got methinking before and since the recent loss of mymother on December 25.

I appreciated the care and concern as Mom’shealth was declining, and there were so manydecisions that had to be made. When my mompassed away, I knew there would be supportand comfort from congregants of CKI. After all,for me, CKI is a family. I truly appreciated thosethat were in attendance at the service, attended the shivas, sent cards, and madedonations. As I am starting to come out of this“dark cloud” and fog that is all part of themourning process, I appreciate all of these evenmore.

Wherever we are in our stage of life, we are a“Sisterhood of Daughters.” All of us have severalcommon experiences, starting with the fact

Sisterhood News

Flying by the seat of your pants, is an oldaviation (idiom) that means you fly a plane

by instinct rather than with instruments.Typically, it involves improvising without anyadvance planning. The pilot doesn’t have aplan; he/she just figures things out as they goalong. In the beginning of modern day planes, there wasn’t much in the way of instruments tofly by. Pilots were told to fly straight and level, otherwise they would spin out of control, crashand burn. Modern day student pilots areconstantly reminded to keep their eye on theball using the coordination ball on the plane’sinstrument panel. This is one of the simplestand most useful devices in the cockpit of anaircraft.

Flying a plane straight and level is oftenunbalanced due to things like turbulence, piloterror, or total disregard to keeping an eye onthe ball. At CKI, we don’t fly planes or have pilottraining classes, but we do have a guide(instrument) to life, the Torah. Our Torah helpskeep us on the straight and level in flying life’s

course, and helps answer what is the purposeof our lives.

I believe that there is a growing sense ofbelonging to the Jewish people at CKI. Onlywith faith in God and his commandments canwe unite as a spiritual community, this is thecornerstone of the CKI mission statement.Unfortunately, there is no perfect harmony inany congregation., and there have beencongregants coming in and going out. Newcomers are welcome and those departing willbe missed.

Statistics state that an overwhelming majorityof Jews are born and die as Jews. For them todisrespect their origin and forget their identitybetrays their own selves. As a Jew, my wish isthat all Jews remain Jews, and hope that allwho come and go from our spiritualcommunity keep their eye on the ball andremain respectful to themselves and the Torah.

that we were/are daughters. Without gettinginto the social mores, being a daughter hascertain expectations and responsibilities. Thisstarts for us at a young age. As we continue togrow and mature, there are certain rites ofpassage that accompany being a daughter.Later, still, many of us will become married, andraise our own children. There is also the bigdecision as to how to observe religiously. Howwill we pass on the traditions that wereimportant to us as we were growing up? Whatdo we want to do differently from our parents?Along with our own decision making, there arenew expectations, as daughters, that are placedupon us within each of these roles.

Why do I encourage all women of CKI to belongto Sisterhood? Our congregants are allmembers with one specific commonality:Judaism. Whether you were born Jewish, converted, or are not Jewish, Sisterhood offerssomething here that you cannot get by being asoccer mom, a member of the PTA, or at yourhealth club. We are there for each other duringboth the good and difficult times. We have thebackground and traditions that guide us. Wehave a deep understanding of whatevercurveballs are thrown our way. We understandthe complex issues related to being a daughter.Age is not a factor in this regard. There arenatural issues and challenges as we go throughlife. We are a collective group of “Sisters” thatoffer a wide range of experiences and a

commonality that goes with this. We have awide range of history as women, Jews, andnon-Jews. Because we have a wide age range,(which I believe to be an asset), there is anunderstanding of what each of us is goingthrough in living day-to-day. Whether you aretrying to figure out where to send your child topreschool, have a child now off at college, andyou are feeling a little misplaced, trying tofigure out how to deal with your child’supcoming B’nai Mitzvah, spousal concerns, womanly concerns, parents. We are there foreach other. On top of that, we meet for socialevents, as well as work for the good of oursynagogue, congregants, as well as the outsidecommunity.

Speaking of social events, we have a fun activityplanned for the morning of Sunday, February21. This is open to post B’nai Mitzvah studentsthrough age 120. Do you like to play games? Then CKI is the place for you! Our ProgrammingCommittee has planned some fun games. Thereare some I have never heard of, but lookforward to playing. There are two dates listed above on our yahrzeit list. The first is theactual date of the yahrzeit, and memorial candles should be lit onthe preceding evening. The second are the days of the services atwhich the name is read. An asterisk after a name indicates that a plaqueis affixed to the Memorial Tablet.

Did you know that this year, 5776 is a leapyear? In Judaism that means we add a full

month, Adar II. Because we have a modifiedlunar calendar, not a solar calendar, it helps uskeep the holidays in their correct seasons. SoPassover is Spring, Rosh Hashanah is Fall.

But what happens when someone dies in Adarand it is not a leap year? What happens in theyear that it is? Do you say Kaddish for a lovedone in Adar I, Adar II or both? Funny you shouldask. All three answers are correct!

For me this is the kind of interesting halachicpuzzle that fascinates me. But for people whomark yahrzeits of loved ones in Adar, it is reallyimportant to them to get it right.

So here is my best explanation:

In the Talmud there is an argument like this.Remember, we Jews, especially rabbis, are goodat arguing with each other. The question is howto date a document written in Adar during a

leap year. Rabbi Meir says that in Adar I wewrite Adar I but Adar II we just write Adar. Rabbi Judah says the exact opposite.

Maimonides uses this example to ruleaccording to Rabbi Meir’s view, that the mainAdar is Adar II and in fact that is when Purim iscelebrated in a leap year so we should markyahrzeits in a leap year in Adar II. However, there is a contradiction that says we shouldalways race to perform a mitzvah, so we shouldrecite Kaddish in Adar I. This argumentcontinues back and forth through the ShulchanAruch (568:7) which says Adar I and the Remasays Adar II. The Mishnah Berurah (568:42)writes the definitive opinion and says weshould say Kaddish and observe yahrzeit inboth.

And then we are counseled to consult yourlocal rabbi to find out what your community’scustom is.

The custom here has been to list the namestwice. So in this February and Marchcorresponding with Adar 1 and 2 you are likelyto see repeat names on the yahrzeit list. You arealso likely to get letters from the synagogueand letters from your funeral homes that don’tnecessarily match. That’s because there arethree systems, all of which are correct.

Ultimately, I think that the important thingabout a yahrzeit is that we remember theperson who died, on whichever day youchoose. It is in a portion just before Purim thatwe are told to remember not to forget. Hownice, that for some of us with Adar yahrzeits, wecan remember the good things twice!

If you have any questions about individualyahrzeits and their dates, call me or email meand I will try to answer.
