Dear Friends

I write this in the aftermath of the terrorist murders in France. This year is also the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta and I feel that the two are linked. ‘Je suis Charlie’ and the need for Magna Carta are about the need for personal freedom and the basic right to be able to go about your life without fear. We might not like what others think, write, draw or say but we defend their right to them.

There is also another dimension and that is about our understanding of God. Christians believe in a loving God who is also omnipotent. Since the time of the ‘Enlightenment’ Christians have felt free to develop their own understanding of God. However, this freedom is not understood by all and particularly those of some other religions.

Islam is a religion of peace and the prophet Mohammed turned the other cheek and was not ‘offended’ when others did not understand his viewpoint. Militant anything is an abuse of power. The Romans used earthly power to crucify Christ but they had no way to control God’s power and the resurrection. However, it is only human to feel fear and this fear allows bullies, and terrorists who threaten death, to get their own way. If your view of God is also that he is a War Lord who is pleased with your actions then we have the perfect storm that is IS, Boko Haram or Al Shebab. Standing up against corruption and evil takes real courage and this is where Magna Carta comes in. 800 years ago a Christian country, Britain, stood up against corruption and evil and this mindset eventually led to the freedom we have today and our very important freedom to practise our religion with a God whom we have come to know personally.

St Giles Church • Cleaning: Anthea and Ian Binns.• PCC Meeting: 26th February.

Auction Sales Sadly the last of these will be on February 14th as Morris Bricknell have decided not to continue with the auctions. Many thanks to all those who have contributed over the years with help on the day, cakes and sandwiches. We raised £963 for the church last year. This contribution to our church funds is going to be very much missed.

Afternoon Club The first meeting of 2015 at the Village Hall will be on Tuesday February 17, when one of our members, Paul Newman, will talk on “Charities and Change”. The afternoon will start at the usual time of 2 pm.

Goodrich Village Cafe The Village Cafe re-opened on Thursday, 15 January. It is now open every Thursday from 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon in Goodrich Village Hall. Fresh coffee and biscuits, a choice of teas and hot chocolate to ward off the winter blues! A play area for the under 5’s, books to browse or buy, free WIFI and occasional IPAD/Tablet training are all available. For residents and visitors alike, everyone is welcome!

Goodrich Ladies Guild raised just over £1,800 for charity in 2014. Our fund raising Santa’s Soup Kitchen was delightful in December with a tangible seasonal atmosphere and just as Charles Dickens says ‘Christmas time, when it has come round, apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that - is a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time’.

A celebratory lunch was held at the Hostelrie in January and twenty-five Details of news items that would be of interest to readers in any of these villages can be

Church Services: Sunday 1 February: Church Breakfast (09.30 - 10.45) followed by Sunday Worship (11.15) at Bishopswood Village Hall. Sunday 8 February: Holy Communion 11.00. Sunday 15 February: Evensong 3 pm. Sunday 22 February: Holy Communion.

Carol Service The church, beautifully decorated and bathed in candlelight, welcomed The Minstrels of the Forest under the baton of Jane Rothery to lead our Carol Service on Sunday 7 December. The large congregation enjoyed the Medieval songs, music and readings, the latter by David Emerson in his own inimitable style. At the conclusion of the service mince pies and mulled wine were served.

A second Carol Service was held on 21 December led by Rev. Jill Stephens at Hazlehurst Nursing Home.

Bereavements The church lost two highly regarded members in December, John Flower and Don Burford. John readily volunteered his considerable country skills to the churchyard and church surrounds. Don was a faithful servant of the church for many years and in many guises, churchwarden, sidesman and chalice bearer at Holy Communion services. Both gentlemen will be sadly missed.

David Emmerson Church members congratulate David on being awarded a CBE in the New Year’s Honours.

Bequest The PCC is deeply grateful for the legacy of £5,000 from the late Mrs. Sally Kings

We do the printing on the final Monday of the month. It takes about 4½ hours. The printing takes place at Whitchurch. Two people are required on each print day. The idea is to have a team of, ideally, 4 people so that no one will need to commit to more than five printings per year; if you later find that you

are unable to do a month you’ve committed to, you can swap a morning with one of the other members of the team who was not scheduled to be there that month.

Anyone interested in helping out, please ring Carol Cranch, 01600 890421.

The Border News Print team are still looking for one or two more volunteers to help run off the magazine.

PCC Coffee Mornings in the Garron Centre It was lovely to see so many old friends - as well as some newer ones - at the Garron Centre in January for the PCC’s regular coffee morning (every second Saturday in the month). For those in Llangarron who may not realise, the PCC organises these sociable get-togethers in the village and then uses the proceeds to maintain the churchyard - so the whole community benefits. We’re in the process of compiling a new rota of helpers for 2015 so that we can try to re-organise our gatherings in the lovely comfortable Garron Centre after all the disruption of last year whilst the building work was going on.

There will be plants for sale when available in season and always homemade cakes and fresh coffee - and visitors can be assured of a warm welcome at any time of year!

The February Coffee Morning will be on the 14th at 10.30am.

An orphaned boy raised by underground creatures called Boxtrolls comes up from the sewers and out of his box to save his family and the town from the evil exterminator, Archibald Snatcher....

A comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells.

Llangrove & District Gardening Society Join us for our first meeting of 2015 on 5th February A talk by Bill Howes - Unpacking your plant names! 7.30pm at Llangrove Village Hall.

Our talk on March 5th is The Edible Gardens by Mark Moir. Visitors and new members always welcome!

Santa and his Reindeer visit Llangrove CE Academy What a wonderful morning all of the children had at Llangrove on Wednesday 10th December when they were joined by Father Christmas, who the children found fast asleep in his grotto, as well as two of his beautiful reindeer. The children were also joined by nearly 80 more children from YR1 and 2 from St. Weonards, Kings Caple and Sutton Academy as well as Archdeacon Paddy Benson who had come to see just what fun the children have at Llangrove and as part of the HMFA (Herefordshire Marches Federation of Academies).

“It was lovely for us to be able to share our school with so many children and staff. The morning was activity packed with reindeer hugging (and Christmas wish making), decorating gingerbread-men biscuits, visiting Santa in his grotto and lots of reindeer activities” said Deputy Head teacher Sarah Dean.

“Today was a great example of the exciting opportunities that the children experience here at Llangrove’ said Mr Peter Box, Executive Head teacher.

Llangrove CE Academy converted to academy status in February 2013 after joining the HMFA in January 2011 and has recently had a very successful Ofsted, being graded Good overall. Leadership and Management and the Behaviour and Safety of the Children were graded as Outstanding with the remaining three categories being graded as Good.

“The inspirational leadership of the executive head teachers and their very high expectations for all the pupils have led to improvements in all aspects of the school’s work. School leaders, including governors, have focused on improving pupil achievement through high-quality teaching. Pupils make good progress and achieve well. Pupils say that teachers make learning fun.

The school is effective in promoting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development through an exciting and relevant curriculum.” - Lead Inspector, Adam Hewett

MEMORIAL HALL ACTIVITIES WORLD WAR ONE COMMEMORATION 6th to 9th November. I would like to thank all those who contributed in so many ways to the Commemoration events. The Exhibition attracted contributions from local people who shared family stories and items and was well received by many visitors. It was fascinating to have their personal stories and local connections as well as the bigger picture. Thanks too to the Ross branch of the British Legion who had painstakingly researched the histories of everyone named on the many memorials in the HR9 area.

An extremely comprehensive book by Bill Webb was launched at an evening event which gave great insight into the histories of the men and boys named on the memorial plaques at the Hall. We are indebted to him for his skill and industry and to AJ Lowther and Son who sponsored the printing costs. “Ralph”, a short award winning film made and presented by Matt Lightstone about his great uncle from Ruardean, attracted a good deal of interest, and the evening ended with a moving candlelit tribute to the 22 men and boys from the parishes of Whitchurch and Ganarew who died in the conflict.

The weekend culminated with the annual laying of wreaths and Remembrance Service led by the Rev Kevin Cecil. Bill Webb spoke about the Rev Thomas Redler, Congregational Minister in Whitchurch, and the tragic family history during the War and in the aftermath.

These events were a fitting and respectful tribute to those who are commemorated at the Hall. The Hall was built in their memory in 1922 and continues to be a living memorial.

Call for Stallholders! We are planning an Easter Handmade /Vintage/Collectables Fair on Sunday March 29th in aid of Hall Funds.

Women’s Guild It was a great pleasure for us to welcome as speaker our Vicar, Revd Kevin Cecil. The evening began with a quiz, India – Truth or Fiction, testing our knowledge, and we learned a lot from this! We did not know that the Dalits (Untouchables) comprise 1/10 of the population, nor that the games of chess and snakes & ladders originated in India. Kevin then gave a power-point talk on his travels in the Punjab, N.W India. We saw the many people he had met, and heard of the kindness and hospitality he had received everywhere. It was a fascinating talk and ended with a social evening and refreshments.

The next coffee morning is on 28th February 10.00 – 12.00.

MLS (Minibus Link Scheme)hvoss (Herefordshire Voluntary Organisations Support Service) MLS throughout Herefordshire; linking groups wishing to use minibuses at low cost for one-stop journeys with minibus owners who will benefit from a contribution towards their vehicle’s running costs.MLS is available to all properly constituted not-for-profit organisations such as community and voluntary organisations, uniformed youth groups and youth clubs, schools and colleges. Upon joining the scheme all groups have access to a list of vehicles appropriate to their needs - passenger numbers, ramp and lift requirements, a list of volunteer drivers - all at affordable rates. Minibus owners submit details of their vehicles, indicating when they are available for loan. These organisations provide a valued community service whilst increasing their own financial efficiency and publicity through a wider use of their vehicles. MLS administer a smooth and safe booking process, ensuring both borrower and lender needs are considered.

hvoss is grateful to have received some funding support provided by Herefordshire Council and MLS aims to make transport accessible to all schools and community groups, helping to keep minibuses well-maintained and well-used by everyone. We are looking for both lenders and borrowers to use the scheme regularly.MLS is also looking for volunteer drivers to join the scheme. If you enjoy driving and meeting people, then driving community minibuses is a great way to get out and about in your spare time. Drivers must have D1 category and we encourage all drivers to have MiDAS (Minibus Drivers Awareness Scheme) training. If you are interested in receiving this training please email MLS for more information.

Llangarron Parish Council The Precept request for 2015/16 has recently been submitted in the sum of £6,500, showing an increase of £1,000 over last year. The Councillors wish to explain the reasons for this as follows.

Llangarron Parish Council already take advantage of the Parish Lengthsman Scheme, which provides a grant to employ a Lengthsman to carry out works which would not be done by Hfds. Council via their contract with Balfour Beatty. From April 2015, we will have the opportunity to join the enhanced scheme which will allow more works to be done and in order to join, the Parish Council have to put money into the Scheme (the extra £1,000 requested) and this will be match funded by Hfds. Council on top of the original grant. This will mean a significant extra pot of money which will be spent on your local roads, ditches, drainage, etc. and possibly some pot holes.

We hope that you will support the decision taken by the Parish Council and although the extra money will raise your Council Tax, it will be spent locally and we should see improvements.

ReflectionPsalm 139:

O LORD, you have searched me and known me.2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;

you discern my thoughts from far away.3 You search out my path and my lying down,

and are acquainted with all my ways.

In this passage the psalmist acknowledges that God knows us all very well. How well do we know God? The thought has occurred to me that people who commit atrocities

in the name of God and anticipate martyrdom and the congratulation of their god would perhaps act differently if they met a mother-figure rather than a War Lord and

this mother figure looked kindly at them but said, “Oh dear, what have you done. How can you think that was what I wanted?”

NOTICE BOARD More notices on pages 19 & 24

Attention Carers and disabled people in HerefordshireIn April 2015 the new Care Act comes into force, and has national guidelines, which all local authorities must adhere to.

What does the Act do? The Act creates a single consistent route, establishing entitlement to public care and support for all adults who require care and support. It also creates the first ever entitlement to support for carers, on a similar basis. The Act outlines steps that must be followed to work out entitlement, and understand the process. Following a person’s ‘journey’ in the care and support system, an assessment will demonstrate eligibility (including a financial assessment). This will determine whether people need to pay for their own care, and in future will include the new capped costs payment system. Once complete, a decision can then be made whether the adult is entitled to care and support arranged by the local authority.

When must the local authority meet a person’s care and support needs? The Act sets out a new legal duty for an adult’s “eligible needs” (determined by assessment) to be met by the local authority, subject to their financial circumstances. The Act says clearly that a person will be entitled to have their needs met when: The adult has “eligible” needs, is ordinarily resident in the local area and any of the five situations below apply to them. 1. The type of care and support they need is provided free of charge. 2. The person cannot afford to pay the full cost of their care and support. 3. The person asks the local authority to meet their needs.4. The person does not have mental capacity, and has no one else to arrange care for

Gathering in 2015 is ready to roll. Brochures and posters will be with parish clergy early in the New Year,

and the Gathering website www.herefordgathering.org

Many laity, it seems, believe the Gathering is not for them, so clergy are asked to distribute brochures within their churches and far and wide within their parishes, and to encourage parishioners to join in

this great occasion.

HEREFORD CATHEDRAL EVENTSFrom the Bishop of Hereford

I’m well aware of the dangers of sounding like someone who spends a fortnight on holiday somewhere and comes back claiming to be an expert on the place. So, by all means, contact me ([email protected] ) if you want to put me right, but here are ten of my first impressions of life in the diocese of Hereford.

1. Second only to the wheel, the sat-nav is a wonderful invention.

2. There are many extremely friendly people here. Kay and I appreciate more than we can say, the warmth of the welcome we have received.

3. There is much heroic, faithful and imaginative Christian ministry being exercised across the diocese, by clergy and laity alike. In many places, it’s tough – a lovely environment does not automatically make Christian ministry easy.

4. There is more deprivation than is immediately apparent. In many places, churches are responding to this, but I do hear some anecdotes of congregations which seem reluctant to really engage with the community as a whole.

Saturday 21 March Hereford Choral Society’s performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 Ticket information 0845 46 33 124 [email protected] 7.30pm.

Sunday 29 March Palm Sunday service Gathering in the forecourt of the Bishop’s Palace, along with the congregation from St Francis Xavier. 10am.

Tuesday 31 March Bach’s St Matthew Passion Sung by the cathedral choir, with Marches Baroque and international soloists. Tickets available from the Perpetual Trust Office (01432 374261) and cathedral shop. Supported by the Alan Cadbury Charitable Trust. 7pm.

APRIL Thursday 2 April Maundy Thursday Chrism Eucharist 10.30am. Eucharist of the Last Supper, with washing of feet and Watch at the Altar of Repose. 7.30pm.

Good Friday (3 April) Service for children and families. 10am. Preaching of the Passion. 12 noon – 1.30pm. Liturgy of the Passion. 1.30–3pm.

Easter Eve (Saturday 4 April) Evensong and blessing of the Easter garden. 5.30pm. Paschal Vigil and first Eucharist of Easter. 8pm.

Easter Day (Sunday 5 April) Cathedral Eucharist 10am. Matins 11.30am. Evensong and procession including the blessing of the lilies 3.30 pm.

Easter Monday (6 April) Lunchtime organ concert Peter Dyke will give his highly popular Easter organ recital on the Willis organ with live video link to the screen at the head of the nave, which will show him playing at the console. Free entry: retiring collection. 1.15-2 pm.

FEBRUARY Wednesday 11 February Friends Spring Lecture: Herefordshire Pilgrims In a co-sponsorship with Hereford Decorative & Fine Arts Society the Friends have invited Tim Porter, a noted lecturer on medieval arts and crafts in churches, castles and other buildings, to give an illustrated lecture entitled, ‘Herefordshire Pilgrims: architecture, art and landscape’. Drinks and savouries. Tickets £8 per person (01432 274783). College Hall. 7pm

Sunday 15 February Ash Wednesday Eucharist The service will include the imposition of Ashes. With music including Allegri’s Miserere. All welcome. 5.30pm.

Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition Food For The Soul Through Learning A special exhibition celebrating the Cwm Jesuit Library, a rare 17th century Catholic missionary library, which is housed by the cathedral. It has recently been part of a major research project in partnership with Swansea University.

Open Monday – Saturday until 27 March. Admission prices, individuals and groups, available on www.herefordcathedral.org. Winter opening hours 10am – 4pm (last admissions 3.30pm).

MARCH Sunday 15 March Widor’s Mass for two choirs Sung by the cathedral choir and former choristers during the Cathedral Eucharist. All welcome. 10am.

Sunday 15 March The Evening Hour A service of prayer for healing and wholeness with words and music from Iona and Taizé and time for quiet reflection; all are welcome. 5.30pm.

Are you on Facebook? If yes, why not ‘like’ Hereford Diocese and keep up in a light hearted way with what goes on across the Diocese.

Are you a tweeter, part of the great Twitter Community? It’s a growing area for Hereford Diocese. Keep up with us, get the latest news and information local, regional and national by following #hereforddiocese. It’s a fun way to keep in touch too.

5. I have some great colleagues and the staff in the diocesan offices are outstandingly good.

6. Just like so many other places in the Church of England, we get things out of proportion too easily: mountains and molehills come to mind.

7. Money is one subject over which we sometimes get the worst of both worlds – talking about it endlessly without ever really cracking it. We do have to talk about money some of the time – in order to avoid ending up talking about it all the time. Having the lowest level of giving in the Church of England is not a record to be proud of.

8. There is an urgent challenge to share our faith with others. I understand English reticence and the need to be sensitive and appropriate, but the Christian faith is for all. I long to see more people becoming Christians .

9. I am really enjoying living and working here.

10. Yes, the cider is excellent and so too is the apple juice.

+ Richard
