FROM THE DESK OF THE GM

This winter seems to be flying by. It feels like the holidays were just a few weeks ago. We hope all of you are staying warm during

these cold days. We are using this time to prepare for a great 2015 season. Over the last few months, our managers have worked with the club committees to prepare for our golf, dining and social events. We have some fun days ahead.

For details, please check out our new club calendar of events on the home page of the member’s only tab of our website. As most of you know, February is tradi-tionally the coldest month here in the Williamsburg area. I would like to take a minute to explain why we close the courses in the order that we do and why we put in place some of the restrictions that we do.

We rotate Blackheath and Marsh Hawk closing in December and January since these two months typically have fairer temperatures than February. Now with Blue Heron’s Greens consisting of the delicate Bermuda grass, we will close it in February so we can keep the covers on the greens to protect them for longer periods of time.

In the winter we use the cart path only rule for a couple of reasons. One reason being that the dormant grass is damaged much easier in its weaken state, so we want to keep as much traffic off of it as we can. Another reason is that when the Bermuda grass is dormant it does not take in as much water in as it does while it is growing. Therefore, when we get precipitation the rain isn’t completely soaked in to the ground, so it sits on top of the turf for a longer period of time.

We also close the driving range more often in the winter months. The reasons being that when we get any rain the majority of the Marsh Hawk course drains on to the range and keeps it too wet to get out and pick up the golf balls. Also, when the range stays wet the golf balls that do get hit plug into the turf, and eventually we lose those golf balls.

As most of you know, the HRT Committee did a reallocation project on the Blue Heron and Blackheath this past year. The results have been discussed, and the new hole allocation will be reflected on the newest set of scorecards that will be ordered this winter. You will be seeing a few different notices from the CCMA Board regarding the changes that will occur.

See you on the links,

Chris Haas, PGADirector of [email protected]

Winter ushers in cold weather, bone chilling winds, dormant Bermuda grass, and an eager anticipation for the occasional warm day. Instead of wasting a record low temperature or snow day, take advantage of the time off and improve your game with routine golf club maintenance.

If you are unfamiliar with the term of golf club maintenance, let me explain in a little more detail. Each season your clubs can take a beating, and two very important parts of your golf club can be altered by the abuse/use.

The first and most commonly known is your golf grips. Worn or slick grips can pile on unnecessary strokes, rip gloves, and add one more preventable frustration to the game. A quick spot check can determine if you are in need; look for smooth spots, rips, cracks, and discoloration. If they are relatively new, using hot water and soap can help extend their life and if you’re not sure, a good rule of thumb is to change them once a year.

The second path to improvement this off season is to have your lofts/lie angles checked. From beginner to scratch, having this performed twice a season is critical. To put it into perspective, every one degree off in loft/lie translates to 6 yards in the wrong direction or distance. That means if your taking dead aim at the flag stick, your best will only be able to produce 12 footers. (PGA tour average from 12 feet is 20%).

I hope you spend your time off wisely this winter and please take advantage of what the Golf Academy has to offer. To help our members this season, we will be having our annual grip sale from February 1st-March 31st. The sale will offer 13 grips for the price of 10, and 15% off a putter grip if you re-grip your entire set. We also have great rates for loft/lie adjustments and fittings using state of the art technology like Flightscope to really hone in your shots.

If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by and I look forward to seeing you out at the Academy.

Cheers,

Eric SimmonsDirector of [email protected]

The Course Maintenance Department has been busy removing dead/dying trees and trees hindering turf grass growth on Blackheath. At the same time we are doing as much as we safely can to raise the tree canopy along each side of the golf holes. This work is also being done to Marsh Hawk and Blue Heron in January and February respectively.

As I write this, we have had to cover the Blue Heron greens for the first time this winter to protect the greens. In order to have two courses open daily, we have decided to open the Marsh Hawk to play on days the Blue Heron must remain closed. Please take this as a fair warning that the tree work will not stop on Marsh Hawk because it is open, therefore there will be piles of limbs and trees along the golf holes. We cannot stop work and still accomplish our goal. I am asking golfers on Marsh Hawk to be very careful. It is not easy to see or hear golfers while running chain saws, wood chippers, and stump grinders.

As we go into late winter/early spring, Golf Course Maintenance crews shift their attention to preparing the courses for the summer months. One crucial part of preparation is greens aerification. The following dates have been set for this task so please mark your calendars on the following dates for course closings.
