“It’s been a productive and worthwhile day with all of us hearing lots of great ideas and learning about a wealth of resources provided through Discovery Education (DE) and on the Web.” - Jane Cook
“I have to say CT's event was great. Even more impressive – participants stayed all day….now that is SUCCESS!” - Barbara Haeffner

Simple Tech Tips with Mike Bryant: Science Assessment Manager
Have you tried the Science Assessment Manager? This evaluation tool can deliver standard/concept based assessments both on-line and via print. If your students
take the assessment online you get instant reports of score, item analysis and remediation recommendations. We recently updated the student assessment experience, providing the opportunity to skip and comeback to questions, review answers prior to submitting and save exam point and return later.

Fountain’s Favorites with Brad Fountain: Scientific Explanation
In this issue of the Lab Report we are going to provide you with a thorough overview of the Scientific Explanation. For more detailed overview of the Scientific Explanation
check out the Teacher's Guide. The power of the Scientific Explanation is in helping students to think and work like real-world scientist in developing claims that evidence to support. In this blog post, I will be explaining the key components of each part of the
Scientific Explanation as if I were using it during the study of the concept "What is Energy?". The key to the Scientific Explanation is that students learn to analyze and interpret data to construct meaning out of the data. For the educator, by evaluating scientific explanations a student’s understanding of the science content and his or her ability to reason scientifically becomes visible to the teacher.

Einstein's Es with Patti Duncan: Elaborate
In our continuing discussion about ideas for the 5E’s instructional model this month we will look at ways to use Discovery
Education Science Techbook resources to “Elaborate”.
Typically, by this point in your lesson the students have "Explored" the concept and "Explained" what they understand regarding the material. Now it is time for them to SHOW you what they know. Elaborate activities should encourage students to APPLY concepts learned. There is a big distinction here between "Explain" activities and "Elaborate" activities. "Explain" activities are those that have students demonstrate what they know. In these activities, students recap, review, interpret and put their understanding on concepts in their own words. "Elaborate" activities differ in that they are about application. They USE what they know to think critically and solve problems. To read more on encouraging students to Elaborate, visit this blog post.
“TECH” This Out!
Check out the great new content featuring Theoretical Physicist Michio Kaku (Link). The series Sci Fi Science is inspired by his book "Physics of the Impossible". The series includes segments on "How to Build a Lightsaber", "Creating Artificial Gravity", and "Shapeshifting Transformer". Your students will be awed by the possibilities Dr. Kaku presents.
"Going Green" with Trinette Green
Green living is a way for individuals to practice conserving the earth’s resources. Building structures that are built with sustainability
and green resources have become a way for maintaining earth’s resources on a daily basis. Check out the Discovery Education Science Techbook video segments in which Danny Forester from Build it Bigger discusses how these structures are designed and created. Have students discuss designs they would think could improve a buildings efficiency.
