employer to carry out a simple assessment of the health risk arising from the use of

chemicals hazardous to health at the workplace and to meet their duties under

USECHH Regulations. MIHA has been involved in the development of this manual since

2009.

The Manual of Simple Assessment of Chemical Hazardous to Health was finally

completed in October 2010. A dialogue on this manual was held in August 2010 with

constructive feedback from the industry. This manual is expected to be implemented in

SOCSO Courtesy Visit,

23rd August 2010

It has been a tradition over the years for

MIHA Committee Members to organize a

visit to SOCSO to foster our current good

working relationship and to introduce our

new committee members to SOCSO. We

also shared with them our 2010/2011

activities and thank them for their

continual support over the years.

This visit was attended by Zainal Mubarik

Development of

Simple Assessment

MIHA was given the opportunity by

DOSH to be involved in the

development of the Chemical Risks

Assessment and Control Kit

(CRACKit) Manual. This manual will

help employers to carry out a

simple assessment of the health risk

arising from the use of chemicals

hazardous to health at the

workplace and to meet their duties

under USECHH Regulations.

MIHA was represented by Ir Nimi

binti Ahmad while Rina Cheong binti

Ronaldin, who is also a MIHA

committee member, represented

Petronas in this CRACKit committee

which was chaired by Hj. Ir. Anuar

bin Mohd. Mokhtar. The committee

had its first meeting on 29th

September 2009. Although there

are hiccups in the development of

this manual, due to the dedication

and commitment of the committee

members, the draft CRACKit Manual

was finally published and released

for public comment in August 2010.

Review of CHRA

Manual

Back in September 2009, MIHA

representatives were invited to

represent the industry for the review

of the CHRA Manual. Providing

valuable comments on CHRA

methodology and concepts, MIHA

was represented by Marina Yong

(Perunding Goodearth Sdn. Bhd.) and

Noormahani Harun (QMSPRO Sdn.

Bhd.). Wan Sabrina Wan Mohamad

and Azizin Zainuddin who are also

MIHA committee members,

represented Shell and Petronas

respectively. Another MIHA active

member, Norhamimi Mohd Yusof

More than 20 days of lively

discussions have taken place since it

first started as this committee meets

almost every month. With total

commitment and enthusiasm of each

member, the CHRA Manual

amendment draft is finally completed

and ready for public comment

scheduled in March 2011. The draft

CHRA Manual can be downloaded

from DOSH website.

since July 2009.

SIRIM Technical Committee meets four (4) times a year to review, discuss and

comment on the various ISO Safety of Machinery standards. The role of MIHA

representation is to look at the Industrial hygiene aspects on the safe design of

machinery. To date with MIHA’s participation, five (5) Malaysian Standards, in

addition to the existing Malaysian Standard on Safety of Machinery for various aspects

of machinery design, construction, evaluation and testing has been developed. Details

of these standards can be viewed at SIRIM Berhad’s website.

From Basic Sound Physics to Noise Control

Course - 6th to 8th July 2011

This course will be held on the 6th

to 8th

July 2011 at Impiana Hotel and Spa, Kuala

Lumpur. It offers training to those in a professional capacity who need to increase

their knowledge on noise.

The 3 days course is designed to virtually cover all subjects on IH noise, from the

basic of sound physics to noise control. For each module, there is an introduction

of principles and concepts followed by problem solving exercises and drills. This

course will cover noise control issues to prevent occupational noise-induced

hearing loss, such as personal protective equipment and effective implementation

of engineering noise controls.

Exposure Assessment Strategies and IH Data

Interpretation Course - 11th to 13th July 2011

This course will be held on the 11th

to 13th

July 2011 at Impiana Hotel and Spa,

Kuala Lumpur. This course is designed to provide participants with a fundamental

understanding of statistics and its application in IH, such as sampling and exposure

assessment strategies at the design stage, and interpretation of the collected data.

It will provide the skills and techniques for statistical judgment and decision-

making for workplace safety. In addition, this course will introduce the Bayesian

framework for decision analysis and its application in IH data interpretation and

exposure-risk assessment. Bayesian techniques can be used to enhance accuracy

and efficiency for the professional judgment with the exposure data. The course

will focus practice and training for field applications.

Latest News – Dialogue on CHRA Manual Amendments draft

DOSH Putrajaya will be organizing a dialogue with all IH practioners especially the CHRA assessors for feedback on the
