In just a few short days we will enter the holy season of Lent. Lent calls for fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. In three days we commence the season and hopefully these three spiritual practices. What will you sacrifice this Lent? How will you pray more? And how will you increase your giving and support, not only to this great parish, but also to our city and our world?

In many ways fasting is personal. It is a personal choice each of us makes – to give up something, to do without, to make a sacrifice. But fasting is also universal. When we fast during Lent, we join in spirit with other Catholics around the globe. When we forgo a piece of chocolate or glass of wine, we remember and realize that we are not in this alone. Together we are one universal church. We are doing this together. We are one community in Christ, fasting in preparation for the feast at Easter.

When it comes to praying more during this prayerful season, Saint John Berchmans can surely help. During the season of Lent, we will offer many ways for you to come together and pray together. It all begins this Wednesday. We will celebrate Mass, with the distribution of Ashes, at 7am, 2pm and bilingually at 7pm. We will also hold an 8am prayer service with the distribution of ashes. Join us at one of these celebrations to begin your Lenten journey. Additionally, on each Friday of Lent (except March 6th), we will meet at 7pm to pray the bilingual Stations of the Cross, followed by a time of fellowship and reflection. Come join us as we walk the path that Jesus walked. Come share your Lenten journey with your fellow parishioners. On Friday, March 6th, Jean and the choirs will lead us in a Taizé prayer service. If you’ve never experienced the calm prayerfulness of Taizé join us on this special Friday to sing, to pray and to listen.

Another opportunity for prayer is our Lenten Reconciliation service. This bilingual service will take place on Wednesday, March 18th at 7pm. The Sacrament of Reconciliation can be a beautiful, prayerful moment. The precepts of the Catholic Church require the reception of this Sacrament at least once per year, but only a small percentage of Catholics follow this teaching. Why? I realize that baring your soul takes courage, but this year let us all be courageous. Let us fill this Church.

The final Lenten practice, almsgiving, can come in two different areas – service and financial support. Both are important elements of the Lenten season. On February 20th, following the Stations of the Cross, members of the Saint John Berchmans Peace and Justice/Paz y Justicia Commission will offer a reflection on how we can come together to serve the poor and vulnerable in our city and in our world. These service projects take place at various times throughout the year, and it is our hope that all will find a way and find the time to join us in these efforts. One of the first opportunities is our Lenten toiletry drive. On the weekend of March 14th and 15th, we ask that you bring to Mass small and sample sized toiletries that can be distributed to the homeless. We will sort these items after our March 20th Choral Stations as our Lenten Service Project – all are welcome to join us! This project is an amazing way for the entire community to come together in fellowship, prayer and service.

As to the other side of almsgiving, financial support, this is the follow up weekend of the Annual Catholic Appeal. While the response on commitment weekend and through the mail was outstanding, we are far from our goal of 100% participation. This year, when your gift gives twice, we ask that you prayerfully consider a sacrificial gift to help secure a stable financial future for our parish. It is our duty and our responsibility to support our spiritual home.

Lent will soon be upon us. Let us make the most of these 40 days as we prepare for Holy Week and our celebration of Easter. Lent can and should be a beautiful, prayerful season. The ways in which we can make Lent holy are endless. Whichever way you choose, I leave you with one reminder taken from Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians – Whatever you do, do everything for the Glory of God.

ONE WORD AT A TIME...

FREE UP“The priest absolves your sins,” the catechist tells her class of seven-year-olds. They accept it but, of course, don’t understand it. Maybe some of us older folks don’t quite get it either. The meaning behind this uncommon word is actually pretty simple. To absolve is to free up. We could use other words as well, such as to forgive, to unknot, to undo, or to release. The great grace and result of the Sacrament of Penance is that sin no longer has a hold on us. What has trapped us and tied us up is dissipated. We find ourselves freed up. And the freedom we experience is genuine freedom, not just the freedom to do whatever we want but the real freedom to be who we truly are—God’s beloved sons and daughters.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS/SOUP WITH SUBSTANCE

Please join us at 7pm each Friday in Lent (except March 6th) for Bilingual Stations of the Cross followed by Soup with Substance. Soup with Substance is an opportunity to come together for a night of prayer and fellowship and enjoy

a simple meal of soup and bread with our community in the Parish Hall. The “Substance” is the special guest speaker that we have at each of these events who speaks to our community about different topics relating to one common theme: the different ways that we can use this time during Lent to come closer to God.

Our substance on February 20th will be provided by the Peace and Justice/Paz y Justicia Commission of the Parish Pastoral Council. The theme for this first weekend is “Catholic Social Teachings - How We Can Help.” This presentation will be bilingual. All are Welcome!

TAIZÉ PRAYER SERVICE

The atmosphere is one of calm prayerfulness. The lighting is subdued. We begin the service by singing a chant. An essential element of Taizé prayer is an extended period of silence. This allows an opportunity for contemplation and prayer, or simply to open ourselves to hear God’s voice. Join us for song and prayer at our Lenten Taizé service at 7pm on Friday, March 6th.

LENTEN RECONCILIATION SERVICE

Our bilingual reconciliation service will be held on Wednesday, March 18th at 7pm. Lent is the perfect time to examine our consciences and receive the Sacrament of Penance in preparation to celebrate the joy of the Easter season.

Amigos,

En tan sólo unos pocos días entraremos en la sagrada temporada de Cuaresma. La Cuaresma convoca a ayunar, a orar, y dar limosna. En tres días comenzamos la temporada y con esperanza, esas tres prácticas espirituales. ¿Qué sacrificará usted esta Cuaresma? ¿Cómo va a orar más? ¿Y cómo aumentará sus donaciones y apoyo, no sólo a esta gran parroquia, sino también a nuestra ciudad y nuestro mundo?

El ayuno es personal en muchas maneras. Es una opción personal que cada uno de nosotros hace - renunciar a algo, abstenerse de algo, hacer un sacrificio. Pero el ayuno también es universal. Cuando ayunamos durante la Cuaresma, nos unimos en espíritu con otros católicos de todo el mundo. Cuando nos privamos de un trozo de chocolate o una copa de vino, recordamos y nos damos cuenta de que no estamos solos en esto. Juntos somos una iglesia universal. Estamos haciendo esto juntos. Somos una comunidad en Cristo, ayunando en preparación

para la fiesta de la Pascua.

Cuando se trata de orar más durante esta temporada de oración, sin duda que San Juan Berchmans nos puede ayudar. Durante la temporada de Cuaresma, ofreceremos muchas maneras para que podamos orar juntos. Todo comienza este miércoles. Celebraremos la Misa, con distribución de cenizas, a las 7 am, 2 pm y bilingüe a las 7 pm. También tendremos un servicio de oración a las 8 am con distribución de cenizas. Únase a nosotros en una de estas celebraciones para comenzar su jornada cuaresmal. Además, todos los viernes de la Cuaresma (excepto el 6 de marzo), nos reuniremos a las 7 pm para rezar el Viacrucis bilingüe, seguido de un tiempo de convivencia y reflexión. Únase a nosotros mientras caminamos la jornada que caminó Jesús. Comparta su camino cuaresmal con otros feligreses. El viernes, 6 de marzo Jean y los coros nos conducirán en un servicio de oración de Taizé. Si nunca ha experimentado el espíritu de oración serena de Taizé únase a nosotros este viernes especial para cantar, orar y escuchar.

Otra oportunidad para la oración es nuestro servicio de Reconciliación de Cuaresma. Este servicio bilingüe tendrá lugar el miércoles 18 de marzo a las 7 pm. El sacramento de Reconciliación puede ser un hermoso, momento devoto de oración. Los preceptos de la Iglesia Católica requieren que se reciba este sacramento por lo menos una vez al año, pero solamente un pequeño porcentaje de católicos siguen esta enseñanza. ¿Por qué? Me doy cuenta de que para descubrir el alma se necesita valor, pero este año todos seremos valientes. Llenemos esta Iglesia.

La última práctica cuaresmal, la limosna, puede ofrecerse de maneras diferentes – en servicio y apoyo financiero. Ambos son elementos importantes de la temporada de Cuaresma. El 20 de febrero, después del Viacrucis, miembros de la Comisión de Peace & Justice/Paz y Justicia de San Juan Berchmans ofrecerán una reflexión sobre cómo podemos unirnos para servir a los pobres y vulnerables en nuestra ciudad y en nuestro mundo. Estos proyectos de servicio tienen lugar en diferentes momentos durante todo el año, y esperamos que todos encuentren la manera y el tiempo para unirse a nosotros en este esfuerzo. Una de las primeras oportunidades es nuestra colecta de artículos sanitarios de la Cuaresma. El fin de semana del 14 y 15 de marzo, le pedimos que traiga a la Misa los artículos de tamaño pequeño y de muestra para que puedan ser distribuidos a las personas sin hogar. Clasificaremos estos artículos después de nuestras Estaciones Corales el 20 de marzo como nuestro proyecto de servicio de Cuaresma - todos son bienvenidos a unirse a nosotros! Este proyecto es una manera increíble para que toda la comunidad se una en comunión, oración y servicio.

En cuanto a la otra manera de limosna, el apoyo financiero, es la parte recordativa del fin de semana de la Campaña Católica Anual. Si bien la respuesta del compromiso en el fin de semana y a través del correo fue excepcional, estamos lejos de alcanzar nuestra meta de una participación del 100%. Este año, cuando su regalo da dos veces, le pedimos que considere con devoción un regalo de sacrificio para ayudar a asegurar un futuro financiero estable para nuestra parroquia. Es nuestro deber y nuestra responsabilidad de apoyar a nuestro hogar espiritual.

La Cuaresma pronto estará aquí. Hagamos lo mejor de estos 40 días, mientras que nos preparamos para la Semana Santa y la celebración de la Pascua. La Cuaresma puede y debe ser una temporada hermosa, de oración. Las formas en las cuales podemos hacer que la Cuaresma sea sagrada son infinitas. Cualquier forma que usted elija, le dejo con un recordatorio tomado de la carta de San Pablo a los Corintios – Todo lo que hagan, háganlo todo para la gloria de Dios.

De Palabra en Palabra...

DEJAR LIBRE“El sacerdote absuelve nuestros pecados”, el catequista le dice a su clase de niños de siete años. Ellos lo aceptan pero, por supuesto, no lo comprenden. Tal vez algunos de nosotros los adultos, tampoco. El significado detrás de esta palabra poco común es en realidad muy simple. Absolver es dejar libre. También podríamos utilizar otras palabras como perdonar o desatar, o deshacer, o soltar. La inmensa gracia y el gran resultado del sacramento de la Penitencia es que el pecado ya no tiene poder sobre nosotros. Lo que nos ha atrapado y atado se disipa. Nos encontramos liberados. Y la libertad que experimentamos es genuina, no es solo la libertad de hacer lo que queramos sino la libertad real de ser quienes realmente somos: las hijas y los hijos queridos de Dios.

VIACRUCIS/SOPA CON SUBSTANCIA

Por favor, únase a nosotros a las 7 pm todos los viernes de Cuaresma (excepto el 6 de marzo) para el Viacrucis bilingüe, seguido por Sopa con Substancia. La Sopa con Substancia es una oportunidad de reunirse para una noche de rezo y comunión y disfrutar de una comida sencilla de sopa y pan con nuestra comunidad

en el Salón Parroquial. La “Substancia” es el invitado especial que tenemos en cada uno de estos eventos que hablará a nuestra comunidad acerca de diferentes temas relacionados con un tema en común: las diferentes formas que podemos utilizar este tiempo de Cuaresma para acercarnos a Dios.

Nuestra sustancia el 20 de febrero será proporcionada por la Comisión de Peace & Justice/Paz y Justicia del Consejo Pastoral Parroquial. El tema de este primer fin de semana es “Enseñanza Social Católica - Cómo Podemos Ayudarle”. Esta presentación será bilingüe. ¡Todos son Bienvenidos!

SERVICIO DE ORACIÓN TAIZÉ

Es un ambiente lleno de oraciones serenas. La iluminación es tenue. Comenzamos el servicio cantando un cántico. Un elemento esencial de oración Taizé es un período prolongado de silencio. Esto permite una oportunidad para la contemplación y oración, o simplemente nos abrimos para escuchar la voz de Dios. Únase a nosotros para el canto y la oración en nuestro servicio de Cuaresma Taizé el viernes 6 de marzo a las 7 pm.

We’ve been very successful the last several years, giving to the mission of the archdiocese and getting great returns here. This year, every dollar we raise will be matched by the Archdiocese and will be used to pay-off our considerable debt. As a result of our extensive construction, we are paying more than $75,000 per year in interest - that is about 13 weeks of our Sunday collection. WE CAN DO THIS, but we need your help. Remember, this year, your gift gives twice!

My name is Jose Omar Ortiz and my wife and I have been parishioners at Saint John Berchmans for the last two and a half years. I am extremely excited to be part of the RCIA program

and can not wait to be confirmed at this upcoming Easter Vigil.

I grew up in a traditional Mexican Catholic home. My grandmother was a Guadalupana in her native Mexico (a devout of our Lady of Guadalupe) and growing up at her house we would always pray the rosary during important Catholic celebrations. I was Baptized and celebrated my First Communion, but for whatever reason I did not do my Confirmation. I am actually glad I did not because I feel that in these last three months I have been able to learn more about my faith thanks in a large part to Father Paul, Father Wayne and Rita.

I am glad that I am able to be part of RCIA and be part of this extraordinary group of people! I can not wait to welcome Jesus into my heart and spirit, and only hope I can lead others to join the faith.
