LIKE ST. PAUL IN THE SECOND READING, THE GOOD STEWARD CAN SAY, “DO ALL THAT I DO FOR

THE SAKE OF THE GOSPEL IN THE HOPE OF HAVING A SHARE IN ITS BLESSINGS.”

MESSAGE FROM FATHER TOM

Recently on NPR, there was an interview with a

woman from Puerto Rico who has done

extensive studies linking environmental

consciousness and the

plight of poor women

and children. Her

studies show these

people suffer more from

the effects of global

warming than others.

For example, poor

women in some cultures

will drown in flooded

areas because their culture tells them they

cannot leave the home unless accompanied by a

man. In other cultures women are not taught to

swim simply because they are women. People

end up on the fringes of society for many

reasons, sometimes deliberate, and sometimes

not. If there’s a cultural basis, it may take

seismic pressure to effect a change; but if we’re

the culprits, then we need to reflect on our

actions. Today’s first reading from Leviticus

explains to the people of Israel how to preserve

their “purity.” These ancient people believed

God punished them because they had not

remained holy and pure. Their reaction was to

put anyone who seemed impure (and therefore

unholy) outside the camp; they

excommunicated them and thereby effectively

killed them spiritually and emotionally by

cutting off all access to their families and

friends, their support system. People needed

someone to blame and, although the sick

weren’t contagious, these suffering people

became the scapegoats of society. These

became the “anawin,” the poor of God. Jesus,

however, once again gives us a different

perspective on our shenanigans. Jesus takes

today’s leper, heals him, and restores him to his

home and family. In his graphic, “Christ of the

Breadlines,” Fritz Eichenberg has Jesus

standing unrecognized in a line of homeless

people. Are there people around us today in

Springfield who either society or even ourselves

have judged to be of little significance in our

lives but who may well be the “anawin” of God,

maybe even Jesus?

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS

The Archdiocese of Anchorage has 11,500

registered Catholic families,

140,000 square miles, and

only 30 active diocesan

priests. Sadly, such shortages

occur often in United States

mission dioceses. The Catholic Home

Missions Appeal supports religious

education and seminary training to bring

increased pastoral care to our home

mission parishes. Please give generously in

next weekend’s appeal.

(Born into New Life after Death)

The Parish Family of Sacred Heart

extends deepest sympathy to Gerardo

and Maria Prieto and their family on

the loss of their son, Pablo Jesus.

May eternal rest be given unto him

and our prayers and support give the

family comfort, strength and peace.
