The January Meeting was extremely hot - well over 40 Degrees and the Committee wondered whether any members would attend. We ended up with around 19 in attendance. Colin Gissing brought along an Octo-Copter which is controlled via an iPad connected by Bluetooth to the radio control unit. It will have 2 cameras mounted on it to film as it flies. For obvious reasons, it was not flown. It made a very interesting segment and was pertinent to the iMovie Group. David Dixon talked about the changes leading up to the latest version of iMovie and showed some iMovie training clips. Colin Gissing showed some film of a recent trip to the USA. Peter Oakley demonstrated the “Reunion” App by Leister Productions and emphasised the amount of research which is required when working on a Family History. BMUG Tip of the Month - Home is where the File IsDon't rename or move the folders in your Home folder. Many applications (especially Apple's) store files there. For example, iTunes keeps your music library in a subfolder within the Music folder; if you move it, you could lose track of your songs and videos.

The December 2013 issue of the AUSOM Newsletter contained a disturbing article by Steve Cooper in his Monthly column under the heading “Attack of the Adware”. This Title was copied from one with a subtitle of “CNET has ruined VersionTracker.com/Download.com for Mac users”. I was using this App for software updates of both Apple and all my third party applications. But Version Tracker was acquired by CNET and renamed CNET Download.com. A further report of this and other malicious download sites, appeared recently in the “Ask Bob Rankin” Newsletter: http://askbobrankin.com/d o w n l o a d i n g _ w a t c h _ o u t _ f o r _ t h e s e _ d a n g e r _ s i g n s . h t m l ?awt_l=AIFp_&awt_m=J4rQ5QN.OuP6SL

While the Bob Rankin Newsletter is mostly about Windows items, it is further proof of the evolving internet problems.If you want to use a download update service, Steve Cooper suggests macupdate.com. There is a free trial available, but a full subscription does cost US$20.00pa. Steve also states that mac.majorgeeks.com> provides a similar service. I have not as yet tried these two Apps.

Happy and hopefully safe Computing.Peter Oakley

Your Committee is seeking expressions of interest from any Member who may be interested in becoming Assistant Editor for this Newsletter.

This position will offer you the opportunity to learn new skills when using various Apps, but predominately Pages.

Your role would be to act as an understudy to our current Editor, Peter Baldwin and to assist him with the production of the monthly Newsletter, including researching and writing articles.

It is envisaged that you would eventually take over the role of Editor when Peter retires from the position later this year.

For further information, please talk to Peter (Tel: 5243 4355) or contact him on his BMUG email address.

The iPad will go here and will appear on the screen on the wall and a finger will replace the pencil.

February 11 2014Getting iPads on to the Big Screen

At recent BMUG sessions that have involved iPads the problem of seeing what the flying finger does and which icon it actually hits has been made obvious. While the content of the iPad screen can be projected onto the big screen on the wall, the actions of either the finger or stylus on the touch screen is missing and so half the value of the demo is lost to the audience.

After discussions and initial web searches some solutions were found. Then after a suggestion from Peter Baldwin, I emailed Pam Doughty, Editor of the AUSOM newsletter to ask if their iPad SIG had solved this problem. Pam replied very quickly advising that they are now using a document camera attached to a Mac and then to a digital projector. The device they purchased

was an IPEVO Ziggi HD USB Document Camera. Furious web searching and comparing on my part, turned up a Supplier. At the IPEVO web site there is a very clear video showing the Ziggi in use and it shows it connected to an iPad.

February 11 2014

A quick email to your committee members resulted in me committing some BMUG funds and we now have a Ziggi ordered and paid for. Hopefully, it will arrive in time for the next BMUG meeting which has been scheduled as an iPad General Meeting.

Included in the kit is a reflection shield to prevent the camera or overhead lights or the ceiling being reflected by the iPad’s shiny screen surface. We also decided to buy a carry case to protect the camera and extras for transporting.

The video link above shows the camera being used in various situations and it seems to handle them all extremely well. It can of course be used to show things other than an iPad onto the screen. It works very much like an ‘old fashioned’ overhead projector so anything placed under or in front of the camera will appear on the screen. The camera head can be swivelled to face forward as well as down. It has auto or manual focus and has an auto exposure control as well. It even has a built in microphone thus allowing it to be used for face-to-face conversations.

It is in essence a sophisticated webcam that is not built into a computer. Apple used to market a separate webcam, the iSight, (as illustrated) which could have been used to do the same function but it doesn’t work with current OSX software. I know that, because I have one and I tried connecting it up before we began our search for an alternative. It needs an iMac without a built in webcam, but connected to my old G4 iMac and to our digital projector the iSight did work albeit with a reversed image which made any text awkward to read!So with help and advice from our large fellow Mac User Group in Melbourne and almost instant agreement from the Committee, BMUG leaps into the forefront of digital presentation. We hope you agree that it will be a good addition to our equipment locker. If it arrives in time the proof will be in the projection.

Books from Wiley Publishers www.wiley.com

OS X Mavericks For Dummies

Teach Yourself VISUALLY OS X Mavericks

By Paul McFedries352 pages October 2013Retail Price $35.99.

This full colour book explains the new Operating System in a fairly comprehensive and ordered fashion for both knowledgable Mac users and beginners.

The Book- • Familiarises you with OS X essentials like navigating the

desktop, connecting to a network, using Notification Center, managing your Contacts and Calendar, staying in touch with Messages and FaceTime, and syncing with iCloud;

• Covers new-to-OS X tools and features including iBooks, Maps, iCloud Keychain, Finder Tabs, and Tags plus the streamlined Calendar, Notifications, and Safari applications;

• Explains how to turn your Mac into a multimedia mecca with music, movies, podcasts, photos, videos, e-books, and your favourite apps and games from the Mac App Store;

• Provides troubleshooting tips, advice on customising and maintaining your Mac, and keeping your information safe.

This easy to follow book uses rich, full-colour screenshots and illustrations to show rather than tell you how to use Mavericks.The Book- • Shows you how to use and optimise the Mavericks Operating

system; • Uses step-by-step instruction to guide you through common tasks

and new features; • Uses full-color screenshots or illustrations on almost every page;

• Covers the latest features, technologies, and enhancements.

I liked the order of the subject matter. It was very easy to follow. There are some functions in Mavericks that are not covered in the book, however, I believe that it is still a good reference tool and a worthwhile addition to your reference Library.

Labels & Addresses is a home and office tool for printing all sorts of labels, envelopes, inventory labels, and price tags. Merge-printing capability makes the program a

great tool for holiday seasons by helping users to design and print multiple greeting envelopes and postcards with automatically substitutable addresses and postal barcodes.

Why Do I Need Labels & Addresses?

11

February 11 2014

1. Mailing LabelsBatch print labels for multiple contacts.

2. EnvelopesQuickly design and print custom envelopes.

Labels & Addresses By

3. Price TagsEffortlessly produce price tags with UPC barcodes

4. Greeting CardsSend out personalised greeting cards.

5. Other LabelsLabels things around the house and office.

Printing labels on the Mac isn't as easy as it should be. I have tried a few different applications, but none other than Belight's Labels & Addresses even came close to meeting my requirements.

Instead of Apple's Pages, the program which most people tend to use, this is an application that provides precise labels, envelopes, mail merges, etc and does it all correctly without any hassles.

With the level of sophistication and flexibility this product offers, I could never go back to using the cumbersome Pages.

Price: $49.99 in the Mac App Store, or from their  Web site, where you can download a Free Trial.

Here is a Tip for you, if you have not already downloaded OS X Mavericks-Make a Copy of the OS X Mavericks Installer Before Installing this new Operating System.

The Mac App Store puts the OS X Mavericks installer into your Applications folder. However, before running the installer, I would recommend that you make a copy of it.

In the Finder, select “Go > Applications” (or press Command-Shift-A), and then drag the Mavericks installer to the Desktop while holding down the Option key.

Why?

After the installation is finished, Mavericks deletes the installer. You can get it again if needed from the Mac App Store, but that involves another lengthy download. Having a copy is also useful if you want to install Mavericks on another computer you own.

FINDER TABS

One of the great advances in Mavericks is Finder tabs. Ever since the introduction of tabbed browsing in Safari, Mac users have been requesting the same functionality for the Finder. Apple has now implemented the ability to browse files with tabs, just like Safari. The easiest way is to press Command + T to open a new tab from your current Finder location. New tabs will open when the option for “Open folders in tabs instead of new windows” option has been selected in Finder Preferences > General. Tabs can also have different views.

Great addition. Try it!

Copy tricky textSometimes copying text from a web site or email can be tricky. You try to select some words, only to have the selection area snap to a larger piece of text, or alternatively, some interaction on the web page deselects the text and does something else. You don't need to finish your selection to copy the text. While holding the mouse or trackpad down, you can use Command+C to copy the text you have highlighted so far, before you release the mouse and the web page messes up your selection.

Sometimes, you can't even start to select text on a web page. In this case, you can Control+Click the text to get the context menu, then hit Esc to exit the menu. The text may then be selected and you can now use Command+C to copy it.
