MAS Concert: Baldwin Wallace Women’s
Choir The Baldwin Wallace University Women’s Choir will perform for
the Musical Arts Series at Firelands on Saturday, March 1, 2014
at 4:00 PM. A wide variety of musical styles will be performed at
this “Excellence from Bach to Broadway” concert. (Please note that
this will be a Saturday afternoon concert!)
This concert is sponsored by Roth & Bacon Attorneys at Law with
accommodations by Our Guest Inn. Following the concert, the
Greater Port Clinton Area Art Council will host a reception for the
audience to meet the artists. Tickets are available at the door for
$15 ($12 for Firelands members); students are admitted free of
charge.
Oops! Please Pay Per Capita Last year in January we asked all our members to contribute an
extra $30 toward both their “per capita”—the amount we pay for
each member to support the Presbyterian Church (USA) on the
regional and national levels—and the cost of offering envelopes.
Many of you did so, which was an enormous help toward our
2013 budget.
This year we meant to ask the same thing in January, but
somehow we missed doing so. So … would you please add $30 to
your offering one of these next few weeks and mark it as “Per
Capita”? You may want to use the buff-colored envelope in your
box marked Initial Offering Envelope.
Thank you!
Online Bible Study See the Pastor’s Page to learn about this new program. What a
great way to keep up in touch while so many of us are scattered
around the country!

Winter, Sermon on the Mount, and Albuquerque
What a winter we’ve had thus far in Port Clinton! Snow, ice,
wind, cold. The poor school children have missed more
days since the beginning of the year than they’ve attended,
and we even canceled worship last week. Here’s hoping
February and March won’t be as brutal!
Looking ahead to February, though, we know that an awful
lot of our folks will be Somewhere Warmer for at least that
one month. We’ve taken chairs out of the back of the
sanctuary to make things seem cozier, and we’ve cut back
on meetings since so many folks aren’t around. The reality
is that we are working on how to be church for the fewer
than 30 families who remain in town.
One of the things we do in the winter is hold our Friday
Firelands Family dinners once a month. Getting together in
a local restaurant gets all of us out of the house and gives
us a chance to “hang out” together as friends.
Another thing we’d like to do this winter is try an online
Bible Study, which will be available for people in town
(who may be stuck in their homes more than they’d like)
and for people who are Away. Since we have four weeks of
Sermon on the Mount lectionary texts, we’re going to study
those passages.
What will this involve? You’ll read a short article that I’ve
written. Maybe you’ll follow some of the links that will be
included … and maybe you won’t. Then you’ll answer a
question or two, or respond to someone else’s answer, and
we’ll see where it goes. You can come in and out as you
please any time during the four weeks or so we keep this
Bible Study going.
We’re working on getting this set up on our website and
hope to have it there by the middle of next week (February
4 or 5). You’ll need to sign in and be approved: that way
we shouldn’t be over-run with scammers and trolls! If you
want to extend an invitation to join in to any of your
friends, just let me know so I can approve them.
Albuquerque
In the meantime, a number of you have asked about
my trip last week to Albuquerque last week, where I
worked with two churches as part of the PC(USA)’s
New Beginnings program. In response I’ll just say
that I thoroughly enjoyed being there and was glad I
took a day just to enjoy the area. Here are a couple
of pictures I took: one of the San Felipe de Neri
church in the city’s Old Town and the other from a
hiking trail in the Sandia foothills. Oh, the sky!

Stated Session Meeting Highlights for January 14, 2014 The meeting was opened with distribution of prayer
cards and sharing of prayer requests.
Clerk David Moore reported receiving a mission pledge
card from Maumee Valley Presbytery for our church and
referred it to Joyce Jagucki, Mission Committee chair.
Treasurer’s Report: Bill Umlauf, Treasurer, reported
that for December 2013, the General Fund Income
minus GF Expense resulted in a gain of $5858.94
Total 2013 GF income of $144,900.75 ($1900.75 over
budget) minus total 2013 GF expenses of $138,199.95
($4700.10 under budget) resulted in a 2013 gain of
$6700.80.
The 2013 Pre-school Income minus Expenses results in
a year end gain of $5645.99.
Connie Brand, John Madison and Ernie McCullough were
approved as Communion Celebrants by a majority of
Session.
Financial Stewardship – Mary Caracci. We now have
34 pledges totaling $99,734.00. We indeed have a very
generous congregation.
Outreach – Karen Coffin. Programs that reached out to
the community in December were the preschool
Christmas program and the Service of the Longest
Night.
Since our reorganization of Session duties, some
Deacon responsibilities report to the Outreach
committee. Under the “fellowship” leadership of Anne
O’Malley, the Deacons were busy, as usual: in addition
to helping with the Sunday morning service each week,
in December the deacons provided cookies for the
evening preschool program and helped with reception
after the program.
Property Management – Jack Combs reported that our
propane supplier has agreed to last year’s price for this
year. The post by the door has been repaired thanks to
Jim Wagnitz and Bill O’Malley; final painting will follow
in the spring. Committee is checking into solar-
powered lights strong enough to solve our outdoor
lighting concerns.
Worship & Music – Kay McIntosh. Mark and Jeanne
have moved some chairs out of the sanctuary for the
winter. The setup feels more comfortable and intimate.
The Service of the Longest Night was meaningful and
beautiful. Pastor Jeanne reported that nearly 40 people
attended. Most were not from our congregation.
The Christmas Eve service was lovely as well. The
(small) choir surprised themselves with their ability to
lead in worship. The ending of the service featured the
congregants with candles moving around the sanctuary
by the stained glass windows.
Karen Coffin led in worship the Sunday after
Christmas, supported by Mary Braymeier playing the
piano.
The new Hymnals continue to add greatly to our
worship.
Susan Larcey is looking into the possibility of finding a
new light for the piano. She would also like to be able
to involve other musicians in worship whenever
possible.
Session Re-organization: Alison Falls posed the
question “Is the size of our Session appropriate for the
size of our congregation?” She will follow up on with
Session members on this.
Discussion: Pastor Jeanne led a discussion on
“Stressors on our Congregation.”
Pastor’s Report – Pastor Jeanne Gay. Jan. 8-10 I
participated in a presbytery-led retreat for pastors who
have not been in their churches very long. It was
excellent, as a source of both new ideas and terrific
feedback and suggestions from other pastors. I am
excited to say that the small group of us are
covenanting to continue meeting every other month
into the summer. This is a great opportunity for me to
develop skills in church leadership and in personal
development.
Session expressed a special heart-felt thank you to
Karen Coffin for preaching on December 29. We
appreciate all of the hard work that went into her
sermon.
There will be no February Session meeting. Next meeting
will be March 11.
Prayer concerns were voiced and Pastor Jeanne closed
the meeting with prayer.

Preschool News The month of January came and went very
quickly. With all of the snow and cold
weather we were only in school for 14
days!! Even with all the days we missed,
we were able to squeeze in two visits with
“Mrs. D” (Joyce Dellasantina) and story
hour with Mrs. Winkie from Ida Rupp
Library. This month’s topics were all about
the cold winter weather. We did lots of fun
snowmen activities, grew our own
snowflake, and learned about penguins
and polar bears. The kids and teachers are
starting to get cabin fever so we are really
hoping the groundhog does not see his
shadow!
