Doddington Diary February 2018

Editors Page

With Christmas a distant memory and January behind us we head to February. Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? It is said that half of the people who make good resolutions at New Year have given up on them by the end of June. Depending how you look at this, glass half full perspective, I think making a resolution is a positive thing, 50% chance of achieving something worthwhile is certainly worth a try!

During February we celebrate the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day on 14th February. This is a day to celebrate the love of those closest to us and perhaps a time to declare your love to another. Do you always sign your card or do you enjoy the element of mystery?

Fenland District Council have launched the Pride in Fenland Awards for 2018. Last year Doddington’s own Jane Archer won the Good Neighbour category, do you know anyone who makes a difference to your community? If so, please make your nomination at www.fenland.gov.uk/prideinfenland, before the closing date of 19th February.

Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day falls on 13th February, so don’t forget your eggs and flour. Traditionally Shrove Tuesday is a Christian celebration of feasting right before the 40 days of Lent. So if your New Year’s resolution was disregarded early, maybe this is another chance to give up your vice?

The Doddington Diary Team hope you enjoy reading this month’s edition of the Diary. Once again, the Christmas Draw proved a great success and raised £778.40 thanks to your generosity. Your Patients Participation Group has been able to give a donation to the Fenland Group Practice towards another 24hour blood pressure monitoring machine. This will help alleviate waiting time for patients across the three surgeries.

This winter is really proving a problem. With the constant change in weather conditions our bodies have difficulty coping and at the same time there are numerous germs around.

Try and keep the house at about 21°C for the living room and 18°C or the rest of the house. Have hot drinks and at least one good meal a day. Also try to keep active either by walking round the house or doing chair exercises. REMEMBER If you have to go out, wrap up well – hat, coat, scarf & gloves.

JUNE BULLETIN FROM CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

Think twice before jumping into water this summer Would you jump into a river, lake or any other open waterway on a hot sunny day? Do you know what hazards lie beneath the water? Or how cold the water is? Your fire service has pledged to deliver water safety education to every school in Cambridge-shire following the tragic death of a teenage boy last summer. But there is only so much we can do and we’re calling on parents, carers and peers to talk each other about water safety. Some things to remember: You do not know what hazards lie beneath the surface of rivers, lakes, canals, etc. Strong undercurrents can be tough to conquer, even if you know how to swim

Cambridgeshire’s waterways are cold – even on the hottest days of the year – and this has a dramatic effect on your body’s ability to swim and get yourself out of trouble, should you get stuck. If someone is in trouble, call 999 immediately. Do not hesitate to call the emergency services and give clear details of your location.

For the latest news, incidents and safety advice, or to contact us, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk . Find us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Call 01480 444500 for enquiries.

What a great start to 2018 we’ve had! We challenged ourselves to walk the 6.5 mile Woodman’s Way on New Year’s Day. The willing Cubs and Scouts walked the whole route whereas our Beavers were given the choice to walk all or half of it. They all did a fantastic job on the muddy walk, as well as raising an amazing amount of sponsorship. Thank you to St Peter’s Church and The Anchor Inn in Wimblington, and The Seven Stars and Specsavers in March for their support with this event.

Our next fundraising event is a Table Top sale on Saturday 3rd February at the Scout Hall. We will also be serving bacon butties & bottomless hot drinks. Tables cost £5, and the event is open to all. Contact us if you would like a table and we hope to see many of you there.

On March 17th we will be running a market stall on the Saturday March Market. Cakes will be on sale; why not come along and treat yourself?

Within our meetings the young people have been undertaking team challenges including making some creative clothes from newspaper and building bridges from straws and cocktail sticks The Beavers have made bird feeders for the RSPB Big Bird Watch. Doddington Diary February 2018

Doddington Parish Council

Local Highway Improvement SchemesThe Parish Council is still hopeful that a scheme to improve the safety of pedestrians using Ingles Lane can be found and will keep residents in that area informed on how progress proceeds with the County Council. In the meantime, as the exit from Ingles Lane into High Street is quite dangerous at times, caused by a congestion of parked vehicles, we have asked the highway engineers to look into the feasibility of extend-ing yellow lines around that area.

Highway Improvements on the A141The County Council has announced that works are planned to commence in March 2018 to install traffic lights at the junction of Manea Road B1093 and the A141 Isle of Ely Way. This work is expected to last for up to 8 weeks.

Street LightingThe Parish Council has reached an agreement with Electrical Testing Ltd, our pre-ferred contractor for the maintenance and repair of our street lights, and has decided to replace a number of columns and brackets. In addition we intend replacing all lanterns with new LED items which provide an excellent spread of light and use less power than conventional lighting. In summary we will be upgrading our lighting stock so that their life expectancy is significantly extended. We have placed an order with Electrical Testing to replace 21 columns, replace 11 brackets that are currently fixed to telegraph poles and change a further 36 lanterns that are currently fixed to sound columns with new LED lights. Works are expected to start in April 2018 subject to delivery.

New Cemetery in Benwick RoadAn order has been placed to plant 120 yew plants along the front of the cemetery wall.

Annual Precept for 2018/2019The Annual Precept’s requirements were discussed at the last Parish Council meet-ing and members agreed to set a 3% increase on last year.

1st Doddington Guides

Doddington Diary February 2018

1st Doddington Guides have had a very busy term leading up to Christmas. We welcomed three new members up from Brownies and continued to work on our 10th birthday challenge. In September they took part in a District Campfire along with 250 other Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and their leaders from Doddington, March, Manea and Chatteris. We would like to thank the Recreation Committee for the use the field and for also cooking all the hotdogs and drinks for everyone! The girls also spent an evening doing a litter pick around the village. The District Council provided us with pickers, gloves and bags and then took all the rubbish we collected away for us!In October we had a reunion party for those who had been a member of 1st Doddington Guides or Rangers in the last 10 years. The girls also had a thoroughly hilarious evening involving broom handles, knots and water! One of the highlights of the term was when the Guides attended BIG GIG, a Guides only concert at Wembley Arena, where they saw Pixie Lott, Ella Eyre, Louisa Johnson, Five After Midnight and many more.November was particularly busy. The Guides made Christmas cards and gifts for the residents at Askham Community Village and took part in the village Remembrance Parade, the District Carol Service and helped out at both Askham Christmas Fayre and the Village lights switch on. The term ended with an evening of chocolate decorating, glass etching and decorating mugs. Our New Year will be equally busy. We have a change of venue and are looking forward to introducing some new and exciting activities to the Guides with our new programme launching in the summer. For more information please contact Jane on 01354 740222.

Doddington Diary February 2018

The Great British Spring Clean: 3rd March 2018Since our article in the last edition of the Diary, we are delighted that 3 new members have joined the group. We held another litter pick in January, again picking up about a dozen bin liner size bags of rubbish from our streets and hedgerows. The curse of litter is a problem not just in the village but everywhere, so much in fact that Keep Britain Tidy is running its Great British Spring Clean campaign on the first weekend in March.Keep Britain Tidy states that the aim of the campaign is to bring people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and beaches. The campaign hopes to inspire 500,000 people to get outdoors and clear up the rubbish that lies around us.Doddington Street Pride’s next scheduled litter pick happens to coincide with the Great British Spring Clean so why not come along on 3rd March, meeting at the Clock Tower at 2pm, and see what a difference we can make to the appearance of our village.

After having to dodge the increasing amount of dog mess littering the pavement during school runs, a few local mothers have decided to start a campaign to bring attention to the problem and try and encourage all dog walkers to ‘scoop the poop’

The plan to ask children to design posters to be put up around the village was decided after one mother stated ‘the children always comment and know how wrong it is – we should ask them for ideas’. The well designed posters will be laminated and placed in prominent places to remind dog walkers of the consequences of not clearing up after their dog.

Unfortunately this time of year with the dark evenings and mornings there is always an increase in the amount of dog mess not picked up. Not only is it an offence which you can receive an on-the-spot fine for, it is disgusting if trodden in and it contains millions of bacteria, which are known to cause cramps, diarrhoea, intestinal illness and serious kidney disorders in humans. Potentially children are stepping in the mess, walking into school and wiping it over the same carpets they sit on to listen to stories. This is not acceptable, so please pick up after your dog.

You can join in the campaign by putting posters in your front window and of course, always picking up after your dog.

Let’s make Doddington a dog poo free village!

Doddington WI does not meet in January, instead the members got together to celebrate the New Year at the Three Tuns. The evening was very much enjoyed by all, the food was excellent and the service was efficient and friendly. The new President, Natalie Jolly presented the retiring President, Anne Chambers, with a silver WI brooch in recognition of her 20 years service.

Monthly meetings begin again on February 1st when Natalie will welcome Alice Jackman to tell us about her experiences working with children in Cambodia. Do come along to the Methodist Chapel at 7.15 to share the evening with us, we are always pleased to see visitors and potential new members.

Interested in joining the W.I, here is the programme of talks until July.

Doddington Diary February 2018

Have your say on police funding in Cambridgeshire Cambridgeshire Police and Crime Commissioner is asking home owners how much they are willing to support policing as part of their council tax for 2018/19 via a short survey. Hopefully the survey will still be open when you read this; it can be completed at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/W3CD8P3

If you are not already registered with ecops then we would strongly recommend doing so by visiting www.ecops.org.uk. and you can select the type of information you wish to receive. There are still burglars about in our area and everyone should remain vigilant. Please report any suspicious behaviour by calling 101 or by emailing our local police crime team at [email protected].

We must all be aware of ‘cold callers’ at the door. If you are not sure about who or why someone is knocking at your door then don’t answer it! If you have a door chain fitted then use it before opening the door and always ask for identification before they begin their spiel. A timely reminder here is of ‘The Bobby Scheme’ which is a locally run charity providing an advisory service on home security particularly for older or vulnerable people. For information call 01480 413311 or 07866 602100.

Our Community Speedwatch campaign continues to operate when volunteers are available although we have been otherwise engaged over the festive season. If you are concerned about speeding and would like to help our campaign, then why not join us? We only require your time when you are available. The more volunteers we have the less you will be asked to patrol. If you see us about then why not join us for a chat about how we operate or contact Joanne Rose for Wimblington or Andrea Harrison for Doddington by emailing them at [email protected]. Alternatively call a NHW contact below. After many months we are still waiting for Highways Dept to agree our requested permanent positions for the official Speedwatch signs in both villages; enough said!

The Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office have demonstrated their commitment to Speedwatch in a recent newsletter announcing the formation of Cambridgeshire Constabulary Speedwatch and funding a new post for a Force-wide Coordination Officer whilst also increasing the number of Police Service Volunteer Area Coordinators. The aim is to provide support to Speedwatch and NHW groups across the county.

So, if you have concerns about local crime or speeding in our village then why not air them by joining us at our next meeting. We welcome anyone with a fair comment or constructive idea but if you just want to listen then you are equally welcome. Look out for our next meeting which will be announced in the next issue.

If you require further NHW information, then please contact one of the following: - Pennie Atkin on 742951 or Bill Harrison on 741406 for Wimblington & Stonea. Andrea Harrison on 07766 658701 for Doddington.

Doddington Recreation CommitteeAnother FAMILY BINGO is planned for Saturday 17th February, 10am in the Pavilion. This is great fun for all ages, so please come along, bring the family and see what goodies you could win.We still have a vacancy for a Bingo Caller at our monthly evening Bingo to help out on a rota basis. If you can spare a couple of hours one evening every two months, please contact us. The cladding on the gable end of the Pavilion has now been replaced using a more environmentally friendly material. The plastic is made from crushed recycled CD cases which will never rot, warp splinter or crack making it much more cost effective. Funding was awarded by Ransonmoor Community Fund after a successful bid by the committee last September. Our 100 Club lottery has a few spaces left if you would like to try your luck. The lottery costs £1 per week, each week there is a draw, the prizes are £15 per week, £45 every four weeks, £250 six monthly and a star prize in October of £1000! There are only 100 people in the draw, so you have a good chance of getting a win. Please contact us if you are interested. Doddington Short Mat Bowls

County Championship domination leads to high National Championship allocation for Doddington Players Following the success of the Doddington players at the county championships earlier in the season, the news has now been received from the ESMBA of the National Allocations per county for the National Championships in April. Not only has Cambridgeshire been awarded a higher allocation than ever before but Doddington players make up most of these numbers. This therefore means Doddington bowlers will be representing in the Singles, two teams in the pairs, the triples, fours, Mixed Fours & Over 55 Pairs. Further details will be released nearer the time of the Championships.

Cambs League Update Another two results to add to the table in this issue. The division one side played away to Sutton St Edmunds. This is always a hard game with a challenging surface. The team captain’s aim is for a 6-6 draw from this fixture but unfortunately the team were two points short of this target this time around with only collecting 4 points. The league table still shows a healthy position with 34 points from 4 games with games in hand over some of the opposition. The division two side produced a good display away to Gorefield who play on the shorter regulation mats at 40ft rather than the 45ft commonly played on throughout the country. A 6-6 draw was the result of this fixture. This division have experienced slight disruption to the standings in the last month due to one of the clubs withdrawing from the league. Currently the club sit mid-table in this division.

What would you like to know about Bowls? Did you know: There are many different makes and model of bowl available. Depending on personal preference and the position you play mostly determines the bowl you need. Each bowl is shaped to create the bias which determines how much the bowl will curve during the delivery. So, some bowls will have a strong bias and some with a narrow bias creating very little curve. Bowls are made from a plastic composite material and are available in a range of colours and sizes to suit the size of your hand. The same bowls are or can be used for all three versions of the game – Outdoor, Indoor & Short Mat. All Bowls surfaces are different - Indoors, Outdoors and Short Mat Bowls is no exception. At Doddington we have 5 rinks including 2 medium pace, 2 fast pace and 1 medium/fast pace mats. All our Short Mat rinks are 45ft long. Bowls is a game that involves offensive and defensive strategy to play the game and has the added challenge that the jack is movable and can be displaced anywhere on the rink by a delivered bowl. Do you have a question about the sport in general or about the club then if so please go online to our homepage at www.doddingtonsmbc.co.uk, fill in the question form and we will get back to you with the answer? Come and see us on a Tuesday Evening at 7pm in the Village Hall when we hold our weekly club night. For more information please call Rob on 01354 740044 or email [email protected]

Doddington Diary February 2018

April 1917Pte. Benjamin Edgeley, 4th Bt. Middlesex Regiment was reported as missing in action. It would be another year before his death on 28/4/1917 was officially confirmed. He was born at Doddington in 1896, the son of George and Mary Ann Edgeley of Newgate Street. Before joining the army in 1916, he worked for Mr GT Butcher. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.Pte. Joseph Edward Wright, 2nd Bt. Suffolk Reg., was killed in action on 11/4/1917, aged 28, he was the son of George and Fanny Wright, of West Fen, Whittlesey Road, March He was born at March in 1889, but the family lived in Doddington from 1890 to 1918. He also has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras memorial. Joseph is not recorded on the main Doddington War Memorials, but he is included on the Doddington School memorial and the March memorial. The British Army had launched an attack in the Arras area on April 9th and both men were killed in the subsequent fighting. The United States declared war on Germany on April 6th. In an attempt to secure more men for the army, committees were set up to investigate those of military age not currently serving. The North Witchford Rural Committee on National Service met, and, after a brief discussion, decided that all the men in this area currently not in the army were doing essential work.At a County Appeal, the military appealed against the temporary exemption granted to HW Welcher, this was upheld, but it was ruled it could not be called-up until a substitute could be found to take on his work.At the annual church vestry meeting, Dr CE Stephens was re-elected people’s warden and Mr JH Sharwood was re-appointed as the Rectors warden. An advert appeared advertising the sale of the contents of the Hermitage by Col TW Harding. Mr GT Butcher had purchased the house.

May 1917Pte. Edward Newell, 1st/7th Bt. Middlesex Regiment was killed in action on 3/5/1917. He was born at Doddington in 1889, the son of William and Elizabeth Newell. In 1912 he married Rose Thimblebee at March and they had three children. He had been in the army just over a year and worked for Mr GT Butcher before joining up. He has no known grave and by some administrative error, he was never included on one of the Commonwealth War Graves Commissions memorials in France. However, this should soon be rectified and his name will be added to the Arras Memorial.L/Cpl Abinger Harding, Suffolk Regiment, the son of Mr and Mrs JA Harding of the Swan inn, was wounded, by gunshot in the right hand and leg, and was in hospital at Frensham Hill, near Farnham, Surrey. He had previously been wounded by shrapnel in the right knee in August 1916 and only returned to France in January 1917. The second wound led to his discharge on medical grounds. At the North Witchford Appeals Tribunal, exemptions for H Beard, F Sutton, W Curtis, A Yorke and H Curtis were extended to July 31st. The appeal for S Pamby was dismissed, but he was not to be called up until May 31st. The Military appealed against the exemption granted to TH Weedon and he was ordered to join up on July 1st. The Workhouse casual wards were closed at the suggestion of the Local Government Board, these were used by itinerant labourers moving around the country looking for work, but there were not many of these during the war. To be continued....

Doddington Diary February 2018

The focus of the February meeting was the preparations for the next Doddington Disco, taking place on 10th March at Doddington Village Hall. The theme this time is ‘Best of British’ and tickets are £5 each and available by contacting Jason on 07980 795398. We cannot wait to see you all on the night in your best fancy dress outfits. Remember that this is the same theme as the carnival day on 7th July, so the disco is an opportunity to get some ideas.

Be sure to check on the website www.doddingtoncarnival.co.uk, visit our Facebook page Doddington Village Sports and Carnival committee and look out for posters for full details of the disco.

The committee is always hoping to attract new volunteers. Whether it’s to help plan and organise the fundraising events throughout the year or whether you just want to give us your time on the day of the carnival in July, we really would appreciate any support you can give. Without volunteers these events would not be possible so please do get in touch, by contacting Jason (details above), via Facebook or by attending our monthly meetings. Our next meeting is on Thursday 8th February at the Church Rooms....we look forward to seeing some new faces!
