How long have you been in-volved with Volleyball at STA? I have been involved with volley-ball at STA for four years, since the 5th grade.

What position is your favorite to play? My favorite position to play is outside hitter.

Would you rather spike the ball or volley the ball back and forth? Well it depends on the score, but ultimately I’d rather spike it!

What role do you play in with Student Council at STA? I am the Campus Outreach Officer, which means I organize campus cleanups and promote Student Council events, such as dances.

What are your High School plans? I am hoping to attend Xavier College Preparatory next year.

Will you be playing Volleyball in high school? If I got the opportunity to I would love to, but high-school volleyball can be very competitive, so I have started playing tennis as well.

What are a few things that you will miss about STA the most? A few things I will miss the most are my classmates, teachers, and the STA community. I’ve had a great nine years at STA and made friends I will have forever. I will be sad to leave, but I am excited for what lies ahead.

What do you aspire to be when you grow up? I hope to do something in the medical field to be able to help people.

Why is STA the best school? STA is the best school because the students are really nice and supportive, the teachers are really kind and truly want you to be successful, and the staff is really caring and helpful. Every-one is always

looking out for each other and encouraging one another to do our best. Z

I love to travel and have been to a lot of cool places like Moscow, Ireland, and Toronto.

With all of the changes in tax and investment laws, now more than ever, it

is important to have the most cost-effective method of having the right person handle your assets if you become ill or if you die. Revocable Living Trusts are very useful for assuring access to assets due to illness or death.

With only a Will, court involvement in the form of a conservatorship is necessary for any distribution to a minor that exceeds $10,000 in a year. Conservatorships limit the use and investments of the funds and then release the funds when the minor reaches 18. With a trust, a parent can choose who will oversee the funds, how to invest, use and distribute the funds – delaying distribution to 21, 25, 30 or more. A Revocable Living Trust agreement is the preferred way to handle assets held in 401k’s, IRA’s, life insurance, real estate and other investments.

The trust agreement can have provisions which encourage a college education, promote living a drug-free life, and encourage gainful employment. The parent who knows what is best for the child can choose the right person to oversee the child’s finances and guide the distributions instead of leaving it to the courts.

Many married couples who have a trust now, have outdated provisions which do not incorporate the Arizona Trust Code which can limit court involvement if there is a dispute; or require that upon the death of one spouse the trust automatically split into two trusts. While having an automatic split can limit estate taxes, in some cases, if the married couple’s assets do not exceed the amount that can be passed estate tax free, then the automatic split is not needed. Having two trusts can be more bothersome than helpful, especially when the surviving spouse may survive the deceased spouse by decades. A trust amendment to make the split optional instead of automatic should be considered.

The creator of the trust is referred to as the “Settlor” and is normally also the “Trustee” or owner of the trust assets. The creator is the initial beneficiary of a revocable living trust. If the creator becomes incapacitated or dies, then the Successor Trustee takes control of the trust assets for the benefit of the initial beneficiary or the designated contingent beneficiaries.

When using a trust, the title or ownership should reflect that the Trustees own the property; for example: “John and Jane Doe, as Co-Trustees, of the Doe Revocable Trust dated [insert date of signature].” The date that the trust agreement is signed becomes part of the name of the Trust, even if the trust agreement is later amended.

Science, technology, education and mathematics are all around us. Think about it – from the social media app

on a smartphone and videogame consoles to state-of-the-art cars and life-saving technology – society is dependent on the latest and greatest developments to improve our lives.

Understanding the relevance and tapping the potential of STEM education is vital to the growth and sustainability of our community, our state and even our nation.

In fact, technology has never offered so many lucrative career opportunities. A report by the U.S. Department of Labor pointed to the 10 fastest-growing occupations. At the top of the list: biomedical engineers, network systems and data communications analysts, and biochemists and biophysicists.

And not only are STEM occupations growing at a rate of 17 percent compared to others at only 9.8 percent, but according to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, these careers also come with hefty salaries. For instance, the average salary in scientific research and development services was $81,350, according to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With this in mind, preparing for a career in science, technology, engineering and math has never been more important. It’s why Grand Canyon University is launching the Center for Integrated Science, Engineering & Technology (CISET). Offering classes in 2014, the center will drive the expansion of the university’s computer science, applied math and science curriculum, and lay the foundation for a new college to raise the skills of future leaders in these critical areas of study.

It all starts with learning more about STEM career possibilities. Teachers and guidance counselors are terrific resources. Vocational classes in math and technology also provide a taste of life in a STEM career. Colleges are a good source for information as well, particularly for those who aren’t quite sure whether STEM is for them.

At GCU, we have a Career Compass that can help match students with careers best suited for their individual interests and strengths.

We live in a global, innovation-driven economy. Opportunities to learn – and earn – in this environment have never been more abundant. It’s just a matter of ensuring future scientists and engineers are armed with the breadth of skills necessary to thrive.

A bike. Something that seems so obviously simple; so simple, in fact, that we might take advantage of this unique inventions

beauty. There are some who have tried to spread the enchantment of the bike, perhaps they’ve leaned it against a faded brick wall or posted it on a hipsters Pinterest page. But is this really living up to the artistic opportunities the bike could offer? The answer is no, at least not until now. SMoCA , or Scottsdale Museum of Con-temporary Art, has taken it upon themselves to

feature an exhibit that highlights those incredibly overlooked bikes, present-ing them in different forms and styles. These creations are done by teens, nonetheless, from around the valley. A swipe of paintbrush or a creamed glob of clay may be an original way to express artistic voice, but there is some-thing about the bike that we can all relate to. The bike is always moving forward, always perus-ing the next horizon; it is always on a different

adventure. This exhibit will make you feel like you are also awaiting your next great journey.

Rana Roudi (another Zona reporter) and I got the chance to interview Laura Hales about the exciting

exhibit. This is what she had to say: “Teens have a fresh perspective about the world around us, and their artwork enables them to voice their opinions and to express their creativi-ty.” This “Art in Motion” exhibit, run-ning from January 24 to April 20, will showcase the talents of several teens from a local high school in the valley,

South Mountain. Inspired by the growing art bike movement in America, these student artists used not only their artistic talents, but also geometry, physics, bike me-chanics and weld-ing to create these unique sculptures. Together, these teens have built an

impactful and dynamic exhibit that will leave viewers feeling inspired, “open to learning new things” in order to “achieve success.” Z

Q. tell us about your recent spelling bee win?a. It was really exciting to finally win. I finished in second place the last two years to my brother and I was proud to follow in his footsteps.

Q. What is the word you had to spell to win? a. It was genetic, which wasn’t too bad. I smiled when I heard the word because it was a medical term I knew well, and my mom is a doctor.

Q. What is one thing that you love about attending camelback Desert School?a. One awesome thing about my school is that everyone knows each other. It is super friendly and we all like to support each other.

Q. What is the hardest word that you have ever had to spell?a. From the school list, accouterment looked hard at first, but it was easy after a couple practices. For some reason I used to misspell rappelled. To remind myself about the double consonants; I made up a little rap: “R , A — Double P — E, Double L, E ,D — word”.

Q. What did it feel like to be crowned miss arizona teen uSa?a. It was unreal. Even for days after, it still didn’t seem real, but I knew my life had changed in an instant. Winning the crown has been my dream since I learned about it two years ago. It was so astonishing to be selected from such an amazing group of girls.

Q. What great things do you get to do with your new title?a. I am so excited to have the opportunities that come with the title! Along with making appearances, I plan to speak to elementary and middle school students around the valley about bullying prevention and self-respect. I hope to volunteer at both Phoenix Children’s and John C. Lincoln Hospitals by entertaining sick children while playing guitar and singing. amelia: Q. how did you get chosen to represent PcDS at the Shemer art center?a. Our art teacher selected two artists to represent the school for the show and we made pieces specifically for the show.

Q. What is your favorite medium?a. My favorite changes constantly, but currently I prefer charcoal.

Q. Will this be your first time that your art is on exhibit?a. My art has been exhibited in school shows before, but this is the first time it will be showed in a professional art space.

Staley:Q. how did you feel when you found out that you got chosen to exhibit your art-work at Shemer art center?a. I was truly honored to have chosen to represent our school. It was humbling that Ms. Strohacker believed I had enough talent to showcase art for PCDS. The competition sounded very fun and challenging, and I knew I wanted to do it. The excitement continued through the drawing process and the show. Being included in the show was a joy in and among itself, and the award was the icing on the cake.

The children’s natural curiosity and interest in the new construction has guided the teachers to add enriching activities based on their observations as the new building goes up. In their indoor play using wood blocks, cardboard and other items found in their recycling bin they can recreate what they think the new building will look like when it is finished. We can’t wait to show you our new place.

Q. Is there a way to get credit for college courses while I’m still

in high school?

A. This is a great question and the answer is absolutely YES! But, there are some important

things to know beforehand, so you are sure to end up with transferrable credits and not just the fun of taking college courses while in high school.

There are two programs that enable high school students to earn college credit at SCC:

• Dual Enrollment is designed to provide an opportunity for qualified high school students to enroll in college courses at high school locations, and to earn high school

and college credits simultaneously. SCC has established agreements with local high schools to offer selected courses to students who have been identified as candidates for college-level work. Dual Enrollment courses are offered in both academic and occupational areas. In order to participate in the Dual Enrollment program, you hae to go through the admissions process and meet certain criteria. Be sure to check with your high school to see if this option if available to you.

• Concurrent Enrollment is designed for high school students that want to take courses on the college campus. It provides the high school student with an opportunity to take classes at SCC while still in attendance at their high school full-time. The program is open to all high school students, as long as their high school is in agreement. Any 100 or above course taken

at Scottsdale Community College counts toward an associate degree at SCC. To determine if the courses taken at SCC will count towards high school credit, it is important to check with your high school counselor prior to taking the class.

There’s a lot of information on the SCC website about Dual and Concurrent Enrollment. Just go to www.scottsdalecc.edu/dualenrollment to get more information and for links to application materials.

Whether you’re thinking about attending SCC while still in high school and/or attending SCC after high school graduation, I strongly encourage you to come to our Welcome Center on campus and speak to an academic advisor. The more you know and the more you plan ahead, the more likely you are to get on track for earning a degree or certificate.

Have you ever wanted to spend an afternoon

nuzzling an umbrel-la cockatoo? Perhaps desired to watch a hedgehog burrow its way under your leg? Or even just spend a generous amount of time playing with kittens? Since 2008, I have lived this dream. I work at the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA, and I can honestly say there is nothing I would rather do. My career with the AAWL began when little eight-year-old me attended Camp Ruffin’ It, a day camp where I learned about a wide range of ani-mals and the roles they play. After a summer spent in Camp Vet, learning about veterinary medicine with other preteens, I joined the Teen Tracks program, an opportunity for eager, animal-loving teens to volunteer in the AAWL’s education department. I joined as a shy, withdrawn child, and over the course of five years, the program has helped me grow into a confident, outspoken leader—though admittedly, one who is not above making smooching noises at a chinchilla.

And this summer I will go one step further: I now officially work for the AAWL, teaching the same camps that I attended a decade ago. Having come full-circle, I am eager to pass on the knowledge I have gained to the

next generation of teens, confident that in doing so, I am shaping my own life as well. Z
