Dear Friends in Christ,
This month, an American folk hymn keeps humming its way
through me called, What Wondrous Love Is This. It is because the 40 days of
Lent begins this year on Valentine’s Day. What greater example of love to
ponder and to celebrate of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ going all
the way to the cross and back!
We all know that someone can tell you that they love you; but we
don’t really know that love unless it is experienced through acts of love.
Scripture tells us that “God is Love” (I John 4)! But how do people know
such love unless it is experienced over and over again. I believe that to love
is the greatest calling of us as a church in being “the body of Christ.” What if
this year for Lent, we do 40 days of the heart by random acts of love? And
maybe, just maybe someone comes to know the love of God in Christ by
each one of us.
In Christ,
Dr. Laurey Murphy

A Pancake Feast Before the Fast -
What is Lent?
Lent is the annual Christian season which
encompasses the 46 days between Ash
Wednesday and Saturday of Holy Week. This
year Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th and
Lent ends on Saturday, March 31st, the day before
Easter Sunday. Although the Lenten season is 46
days, Lent encompasses the days minus Sundays
during this time. Every Sabbath we celebrate the
resurrection of Jesus and therefore these six
Sundays during Lent are not considered in the
preparation for the cross.
The 40 days of Lent represent the time Jesus
was in the wilderness and tempted (Mt. 4:1-
11). There are also other significant places in the
Bible where the number 40 is used: Moses spent
40 days on Mt. Sinai receiving the Ten
commandments, Christ's body lay in the tomb for
40 hours, and there are 40 days between the
Resurrection and the Ascension.
The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the
believer through prayer, doing penance,
mortifying the flesh, repentance of sins,
almsgiving, and self-denial. We are preparing for
the greatest celebration of our lives. This is why
we are Christians! In order to reach the
culmination, we participate in the
anticipation. For some it is through daily
devotional. Others may give up soda, chocolate,
or alcohol. However you choose to prepare for
the resurrection of Christ let this Lenten season
bring you closer to God.
Join us on Sunday, February 11th in the
Fellowship Hall from 4:30 - 6 K.D. to learn and
participate in the life of Johns Island
Presbyterian's journey to the cross through Lent.
All ages are invited to come and enjoy the
fellowship of prayer, crafts, and a pancake dinner.
Please contact Elizabeth Nix , [email protected], to
let her know you will be joining this event.
Wednesday, February 14th is not only
valentine's day, it is also Ash Wednesday! The
sanctuary will be open for prayer and meditation
with hosts from 7:30 C.D. - 3 K.D. Ashes will be
available for use to come and reflect on this
important time in our Christian lives.
From the Session
to the Congregation
The Session is pleased to
contract with Pinnacle Leadership
Associates to support the Session,
the staff and the congregation in
identifying ways to enhance how we
serve most effectively. Rev. Dr. Dan
Holloway from Pinnacle will work
with us to clarify relationships and
expectations first among staff
members, then facilitating a
previously planned Session Retreat
in March. Dan will also work with a
Vision team which will expand on
the work already done by the
Sailboat Church group. We expect
this process will ultimately engage
the entire congregation in
working to develop a vision for the
future of Johns Island Presbyterian
Church.
In this time of transition and
change in our church we are very
excited about the opportunity to
engage the entire congregation in
continuing to grow and be a beacon
of faith in our community.

Children’s Church Ministry
During the 11 o’clock worship service, children ages 3-6
are invited to participate in children’s church, beginning
immediately following the children’s moment. At JIPC,
we believe people of all ages are welcome to worship for
us but that the structure of a traditional worship service
may be difficult for a 3-6 year old to engage with.
Because of this, we offer children’s church, where they
have the chance to encounter the stories of Scripture and
traditions of the faith in a setting that encourages their
engagement. This ministry cannot happen without the
support of the congregation by way of volunteers.
Beginning in January, we are adopting a 12-week
rotating schedule. Our hope is to have at least 12 people
leading this ministry once every 12 weeks. The lesson
and all supplies are provided to the teacher prior to the
Sunday they are teaching. If you would like to be a part
of the 12-week rotation, please let Elizabeth Nix or
Molly Baslow know.
Provide a Meal for KFC! On Sunday evenings, 4:30-6
K.D., our children and youth gather for choir, fellowship,
and to explore their faith. At 5:30 pm, parents, children,
and youth gather for dinner together. Providing the space,
time, and meal for this educational ministry for our
children and youth is an important part of the ministry
here at Johns Island Presbyterian. I hope you will
consider providing a meal and supporting our children
and youth. If you are interested in providing a meal,
contact Elizabeth Nix.
February 4: Souper Bowl of Caring!
JIPC is participating in the Souper Bowl
of Caring, a collection event on Superbowl Sunday,
February 4. Our children and youth will collect a special
offering of donations for the Hebron-Zion Presbyterian
Church Emergency Food Pantry during worship that
morning. Help us use the energy around this major
sporting event to help so many in need of food and
assistance!
February 11: Family Lent Preparation Night
ALL members of our church family are invited to gather
together in community on February 11 at 4:30pm to
prepare our hearts and mind for the approaching season
of Lent.

High School Presbytery Retreat- February 9-11
The Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery has a Middle School
Retreat in the fall (November) and an High School
Retreat in the winter (February). Both Retreats are held at
Bethelwoods Camp and Conference Center in York, SC.
These retreats are open to any youth in our presbytery!
All the events are planned and lead by our Presbytery
Youth Council, which is composed of youth
representatives and youth leaders from churches in the
presbytery.
These retreats are always very well done, inclusive of
youth groups of all sizes, and offer a meaningful way to
connect with and get involved in the larger Presbyterian
community of which Johns Island Presbyterian church is
a part.
If you are interested in learning more about the High
School Retreat coming up in February, contact Elizabeth
Nix ASAP!
Presbytery Youth Council
The Charleston Atlantic Presbytery Youth Council is a
unique opportunity for high school youth to gain valuable
leadership skills, learn more about the Presbyterian
Church (USA), get to know other youth from around the
presbytery, and serve the church in an important and
challenging way! Representatives from churches across
the presbytery serve on this council. Members of this
council have regular meetings and are responsible for
planning and organizing several presbytery-wide events
throughout the year. JIPC can have two representatives
on the council. The application period opens in the
Spring. Talk to Elizabeth Nix for more info!
Small Groups and Bible Studies
The Tuesday Night Small Group will continue meeting in
February at 6:30. They will continue their study of When
God’s Spirit Moves. Contact Jan Eubank,
[email protected] for details.
The Women’s Bible Study will continue meeting in
February, Tuesday mornings at 10am. Contact Alice
Hills for more info: 843-568-6687
The Men’s Bible Study will have its regularly scheduled
meetings on February 1, 8, 15, and 22. They are
continuing a study on several significant events from
Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua.

A staff member found each of the
four thermostats in the Sanctuary set
to COOL the morning of December
28, making the inside temperature 58
degrees.
Please do not attempt to adjust the thermostats.
Instead, tell an Usher or an Elder that you are
extremely hot or cold, or even if you would like the
position of a shutter changed. This will help us to
more accurately program the temperature AND help
to decrease our extremely high electric bills. Thank
you!
V<=@9755AC N55;5; The Congregational Care Committee is in need of
two volunteers each week to provide light
refreshments for the Sunday Fellowship between
the conclusion of the 8:30 worship service and
beginning of Sunday school. Please contact Linda
Mecchi, [email protected], or Johnsie Mason,
[email protected], for more
information.
From the Choir Loft: Each month we will feature a
member in, "Get To Know Your Choir" !
"Why I Joined the Choir, by Barbara Reynolds
I joined JIPC Choir many years ago when they
were putting together a group to sing at the
early service. Robin Gramling was our leader at
that time and it was great fun. We were a “rag
tag” group but we let our voices be heard. As
time went by, a permanent Choir Director was
hired and he kept our little group together. I
don’t remember exactly how long Eric was with
us but we stayed the course. Eric moved on
after a period of time and this young woman
named Sarah Smith (Shayban) was hired and
our whole Choir changed. I think I can speak
for everyone that her impact with the JIPC
music program has been miraculous!! The talent
that Sarah brings is outstanding. She makes
choir fun; something you miss when you are not
a part. The comraderie felt by everyone is
true. She has helped me to find the voice that
God has given me and to use it to sing praises
to Him. I know that I, and I believe everyone,
wants to give his or her best to Sarah because
that is what she gives to us. As with any Choir –
we are always looking to increase in size! You
don’t need to be able to read music or to have
any voice training. You just need to want to be
a part of a ministry at JIPC that promises to
fill your heart with gladness and singing! Come
give us a tryout! "

The Flower Calendar for next year is available for you
to reserve the Sunday you'd like to provide flowers for
worship. It's hanging on the wall in the Sanctuary
kitchen. Celebrate an anniversary, birthday, remember
your loved ones, or honor that special someone.
There are no rules governing what kind of flowers you
supply for worship. You may arrange the bouquet
yourself or have it delivered by your favorite florist;
that's entirely up to you. After worship, you may take
the flowers home or they will be taken to our sick or
hospitalized members, or our homebound members and
friends.
JIPC has a relationship with two local florists you may
use:
Charleston Flower Market, 1952 Maybank Highway

Dear Friends,
Thank you all very much for the Appreciation Gift that
was given to me on Christmas Eve. I was speechless
and even now at a loss of words to express my
gratitude to you for this very generous gift. Part of it
was used to go with my family to see my brother in
Utah. The other part has been put in savings.
Over and over again, you have shared so much with me
in your special ways of who you are. Thank you very,
very much for this gift, but even more for the gift of
you in my life!
In the love of Christ,
Laurey

Paul declares that nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Which of the following does Paul specify as unable to block God’s love?
A. death; life
B. angels; demons
C. present; future
D. height; depth
E. all of the above
Answer: E (See Romans 8:38-39, NIV.)
Christian Symbol Lark — Birds became prominent
in Christian art during the
Medieval and Renaissance eras.
The lark came to symbolize the
humility of the priesthood
because it flies high and sings
only when flying upward.
10 Biblical Ways to Love
Listen without interrupting. “To answer before listening — that is
folly and shame” (Proverbs 18:13).
Speak without accusing. “Be quick to listen, slow to speak and
slow to become angry” (James 1:19).
Give without selfishness. “The righteous give without
sparing” (Proverbs 21:26).
Pray without ceasing. “We have not stopped praying for
you” (Colossians 1:9).
Answer without arguing. “Better a dry crust with peace and quiet
than a house full of feasting, with strife” (Proverbs 17:1).
Share without pretending. “Speaking the truth in love, we will grow
to become in every respect the mature body of …
Christ” (Ephesians 4:15).
Enjoy without complaining. “Do everything without grumbling or
arguing” (Philippians 2:14).
Trust without wavering. “[Love] always protects, always trusts,
always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:7).
Forgive without punishing. “Forgive as the Lord forgave
you” (Colossians 3:13).
Promise without forgetting. “A longing fulfilled is a tree of
life” (Proverbs 13:12).

“What Do I Have?”
What do I have, Lord, that you
would need me as a servant?
∗ Eyes, he said, to see the
beauty in all that I’ve made,
and my children as they
travel life’s highway.
∗ Hands, he said, to reach out
and touch hurting souls, to
give a hug or encouraging
pat on the back.
∗ Feet, he said, to lead my
children through this world of
strife and to help them run
from sin and follow me.
∗ Mouth, he said, to lift up your
voice and sing praises to me
so others may hear the joy in
your heart.
∗ Ears, he said, to listen to my
still, small voice of love and
to hear my children when
they cry for help.
∗ Heart, he said, so you may
know the full love of my Spirit
and love my children as I
have loved you.
