Inland Hospital is among the top 15 percent of hospi-tals considered the best in which to have a baby in 2016.
For the fourth year in a row, Inland Hospital in Waterville has received the Women’s Choice Award® as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics. This evidence-based desig-nation is the only award that identifies the country’s best health care institu-tions based on criteria that considers female patient satisfaction, clinical excel-lence and what women say they want from a hospital.
The list of over 400 award winners — including Inland Hospital, a member of EMHS —represents hospi-tals that offer exceptional obstetric services that ranked above the national average for patient safety, thereby supporting a wom-an’s decision when choosing the best for herself.
“We are very proud of our Birthing Center staff and the providers at Inland Women’s Health Care,” said John Dalton, Inland Hos-pital president and CEO. “Earning the America’s Best Hospitals for Obstet-rics award four consecutive years shows that women and families value how we put them at the center of everything we do — from safe, quality care to excel-lent service. We consider it a privilege to help them welcome their new little Mainers into the world.”
Delia Passi, CEO and Founder of the Women’s Choice Award, touted the hospital’s excellence.
“New moms have many choices when it comes to having their baby, so choos-ing the best birthing expe-rience is right up there with choosing the best doctor,” Passi said. “We’ve made it easy for moms to vet out the hospitals proven to de-liver an outstanding expe-rience, and Inland is one of those excellent hospitals.”
The America’s Best Hos-pitals for Obstetrics scoring process is unique in that it is the only national list that is evidence-based and focuses on female patient satisfaction.
Awarded hospitals ranked above the national average for patient recommenda-tions, as indicated by the data reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) sur-veys.
Additional requirements included having low rates of early elective deliveries (between 0-1 percent), as well as ranking above the national average for patient safety.

Special to Baby Parade
When a baby is born at MaineGeneral’s Alfond Center for Health, the comforting sounds of “Brahms’ Lullaby and Goodnight” chime briefly throughout the building. Every birth is a celebration at Maine-General.
A healthy birth — for both baby and mom — is the ulti-mate goal at MaineGeneral.
MaineGeneral Obstetrics & Gynecology and MaineGeneral Midwifery Services know the important role prenatal care plays in delivering healthy ba-bies. That’s why these depart-ments began offering Center-
ingPregnancy® to patients a year ago.
A year into the program, the hospital is throwing a birthday party for the more than 50 families who have participated in CenteringPregnancy® in the past year.
The achievements of Cen-teringPregnancy® have been substantial, worthy of a cele-
bration. Among the benefits to participating families so far in the MaineGeneral program:
• Zero pre-term births• 100 percent rate of breast-
feeding• Decreased cesarean births “This group model of
prenatal care includes an individual health checkup with additional time and attention
in a facilitated group setting,” said Angela Ripley, certified nurse midwife at MaineGen-eral Obstetrics & Gynecology. “Women with similar due dates share experiences, discuss healthy lifestyles and wellness, learn more about prenatal care and become better prepared for birth and caring for their babies.”
“CenteringPregnancy® is a studied model of care proven to improve patient satisfac-tion, increase breastfeeding rates, and significantly reduce preterm births,” said Danielle Salhany, DO. “The sessions are relaxed and fun. Everyone can share their questions, advice and experiences. Expectant mothers support and learn from each other.”
Ripley and Salhany sit in on each group meeting, providing additional support and answers to moms. Health assessments of mom and baby are done at each session.
Beyond the impressive numbers is the overwhelmingly positive feedback from patients

who have enjoyed having a larger support system through the process of readying for childbirth.
“Centering was perfect for us,” said Kelley Doyle, who participated in the program and had a healthy baby girl, Evelyn. “We were the type to never ask questions in the office, even if we had them. With Centering, everyone seemed to have the same questions. It was nice being with other expectant mothers, listening and relating to what they were experiencing.
“Dr. Salhany and Angela were so full of knowledge and compassion. They made the group really come together and helped us all find support and the knowledge we needed to get through pregnancy — what to expect giving birth, and even prepared us for when our babies arrived,” Doyle added. “I recommend everyone take part in Cen-tering! It’s great for partners
too, because they can learn everything right by your side. I am really grateful for Cen-tering and I hope everyone can experience the positive support it gives.”
In addition to Salhany and Ripley, Cathy Heffernan, CNM
and Dolores Carbonneau, CNM facilitate CenteringPregnancy® sessions. MaineGeneral offers the program in Augusta and Winthrop.
The March of Dimes has gen-erously supported MaineGen-eral’s CenteringPregnancy®
program, and a representative from the organization will be at the March 17 birthday party for the program.
The public also is welcome to join the one-year celebration for MaineGeneral’s Center-ingPregnancy® program. Call

BY EllEN rIChMONDOwner of the
Children’s Book CellarSpecial to Baby Parade
I love the recent trend in baby showers! Book showers, where everyone is asked to bring a favorite children’s book, are becoming more and more common.
Sometimes the invitation reads, “Bring a book instead of a card.” Sometimes the family simply wants books as gifts. Either way, I love the thought of a new baby coming home from the hospital to his or her own starter library. The evidence is clear that it is never too early to start reading to a baby, and that the benefits are significant and lifelong.
Board books, with their hard-to-tear cardboard pages that are easy to wipe clean, are the most obvious choice for an in-fant. There are some perennial favorites, such as “Goodnight Moon,” “Pat the Bunny,” “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” and “Guess How Much I Love You” — often a family will receive multiple copies of them as gifts. But there are dozens of board books on the shelves, many less likely to be duplicate copies. Here’s a baker’s dozen of other choices:
• “Barnyard Dance” by Sandra Boynton . A rollicking read-aloud with a square dance rhythm.
• “Mike Mulligan and His
Steam Shovel” by Virginia Lee Burton . Yes! That story you grew up with!
• “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” by Bill Martin. The letters of the alphabet tumble and jumble up, and down, the coconut tree.
• “On The Day You Were Born” by Deborah Frasier. A
celebration of Earth, nature, and a new life.
• “Won’t You Be My Kissaroo?” by Joanne Ryder. Who doesn’t want to snug-gle and kiss a
baby?• “The Real Mother Goose
Board Book.” The board ver-sion of the classic edition read to many of us by our parents.
• “The Owl and The Pussy-cat” by Jan Brett . Edward Lear’s silly poem, perfect for reading aloud, with wonderful illustrations.
• “Global Babies” by Global Fund for Children. Colorful photographs of babies from around the world.
• “Time For Bed” by Mem Fox . A gentle rhyme showing all sorts of babies at bedtime.
• “Owl Babies” by Martin Waddell. Three baby owls waiting for Mommy, who will always come home.
• “Babies” by Gyo Fujikawa. Sweet illustrations showing babies just being babies.
• Lullaby and Kisses Sweet: Poems to Love with Your Baby” by Lee Bennett Hop-kins. Thirty poems arranged by
five topics.• “Dahlov Ipcar’s Farmyard
Alphabet” by Dahlov Ipcar . This alphabet book by Maine artist Dahlov Ipcar is a work of art.
And, if none of these suit you, there are dozens and dozens more from which to choose. There is something perfect for everyone. Or, you can just by-pass the board books and share one of your favorite storybooks for older children. Personally, I usually give a hardcover copy of the original (not the Disney version) “Winnie The Pooh” by A. A. Milne. It was my favorite 60 years ago and is still a great read-aloud.
