SOUTH AFRICA by RV ...a tailor-made journey of Extremes. No other country on the planet is as culturally, ethnically and geographically diverse as the proud ‘Rainbow Nation’ of South Africa. Cultures, creeds, history and cuisine are shared by all in 11 official languages. The land itself is even more diverse then the people who live here. But ‘Howzit’ [meaning hello and what’s up] is the universal greeting. Welcome to spectacular South Africa ‘a world in one country!’ RVing on Fantasy’s 33-day South Africa Wildlife RV Safari is easy and it’s the best way to experience the country in the detail it deserves. Highways are paved, wide and well patrolled. Signage is ample, pictorial or in English. The metric system is used exclusively and South Africans drive on the left-hand side of the road. Self-serve gas stations don’t exist, so it’s easy to relax while someone is pumping your fuel for you. Fantasy’s fantastic wildlife safari starts with three first class luxury hotel nights in the crazy, cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. This eclectic coastal city is comprised of beaches, mountains, harbors and gardens — all tucked under Table Mountain. There is much to see and do here! We begin with a trip to Cape Point (a promontory at the southeast corner of the Cape Peninsula) and take the Flying Dutchman funicular all the way up to the historic old lighthouse. The antics of the African Penguin colony at Boulders Beach are inspiring and will keep us chuckling for days. Our visit includes Groot Constantia, voted ‘Top South African Wine Producer in 2016.’ We explore Bo-Kaap, formerly the Malay Quarter, with its brightly colored homes, charming cobblestone streets and scents of mysterious

Malaysian spices. A 30-minute ferry ride transports us to historic Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. We soon marvel at the breathtaking views from the bluff of the Cape Point Nature Reserve, and lunch in the happy Cape Town harbor, tapping our toes to traditional African music courtesy of local musicians.A short drive brings us to the beautiful winery region of Stellenbosch of the Western Cape Province. Stellenbosch is a delightful living piece of Dutch colonial history. We stay overnight to pick up our fully equipped RV rentals and stock-up on groceries and personal supplies. Our first stop along our route is Cape Algulhas, the geographic southern tip of the African continent. Time to celebrate with a South African wine tasting social! On to Outdtschoorn, (the ‘ostrich capital of the world’) for a guided tour and local lunch.Driving through the heart of South Africa’s spectacular Garden route, we stop for a guided tour of Cango Caves and its imposing dripstone formations. Our destination is South Africa’s secret jewel. It’s spelled K-N-Y-S-A but

pronounced ‘nize-na.’ Knysa is heartbreakingly beautiful with its rugged inlets and dramatic sandstone cliffs surrounded by the Indian Ocean. This is the perfect setting for our introduction to a wonderful

South African tradition called ‘Sundowner.’ Sundowner is observed at sunset with an alcoholic drink of your choosing. But our first Sundowner is with elephants on a private Elephant Sundowner experience. Two days in Tsitsakamma National Park is next on the itinerary. Get ready to walk across the Storms River Suspension Bridge – just

because we can! En route to Addo National Elephant Park, we pause to pay homage to South Africa’s revered ‘Big Tree.’ After arriving at Addo, we take a self-game drive. A little later we have a guided safari tour

with lion viewing - followed by afternoon tea. We share a traditional outdoor dinner, known as aa ‘boma’ under the glittering African sky. A morning game drive concludes our stay in this elephant paradise. For the next four days we travel on a unique adventure in each of our overnight locations. Cradock is highlighted by a traditional South African dinner and a cultural dance show. We stop in Gariep Dam to explore and on to Golden Gate National Park near the Lesotho border for a nature walk along beautiful sandstone cliffs. Traveling on to Midmar we stop at Nelson Mandela’s apartheid museum. The cascading waters of Howick Falls, (‘Place of the Tall One’ in Zulu legend) is a destination for a must-have photo.

Day 18 is our long-awaited arrival at Shakaland Zulu Village! It’s all things Zulu, all the time. Here we are dazzled by a Zulu cultural show and dinner. Two more days of travel to Swaziland and a stop at the oldest nature reserve in Africa, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park for game viewing, a wildlife cruise and some of the most exotic bird watching you may ever experience.Arriving in sweet, Swaziland (on Day 21) we enter this tiny monarchy – filled with festivals, wildlife and stunning handcrafted jewelry. We have time to check out local crafts before enjoying a potjie dinner accompanied by Swazi dancers. South Africans love their potjies! Say ‘poi-kee.’ These ugly three-legged cousins of a Dutch oven are round, pot-bellied and used only over a campfire. Cooking with them is a true South African art form, and eating from them is even better! We arrive in Kruger National Park, the largest game reserve on the continent, as well as a South Africa’s greatest shrine. Our three-day luxury safari experience starts at the five-star Bhala lodge on the banks of the Crocodile River. We gladly embrace the luxurious Safari life. Each day starts with breakfast, followed by a guided

game drive, lunch at the lodge, evening game drive, dinner at the lodge and surprisingly restful sleep.A short drive brings us to Pilanesberg, near Pretoria and Johannesburg for two days. Here we have an extraordinary ‘walk with lions’ followed by a local meal filled with stories of our recent encounters. There is time for an exceptional hot air balloon ride (optional) for those in need of a flight filled with pure bliss. Our rental RVs are returned in Johannesburg where we have arranged for an overnight before flying to Zambia to the remarkable Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the

World! In Zambia, we have lunch and later a sunset cruise-to-remember on the Zambezi River. In Botswana, we’ll have a safari and lunch, along with a guided tour of Victoria Falls and local village. This classic African setting is where we have our farewell dinner, before flying back to Johannesburg.Everyone comes to South Africa to see the ‘Big Five’ – African elephant, rhinoceros, African lion, Cape buffalo and African leopard. By now you know that everyone leaves with so much more. Your many ‘Out of Africa’ experiences on Fantasy’s South Africa Wildlife RV Safari have only piqued your curiosity. You will follow your heart back to this wild and wonderful country one day – for more adventures, more music, more food and the overwhelming hospitality from locals …but mostly for the endless, unparalleled beauty of it all.
