    With summer coming to an end the NCN

    community was alive with activity during the

    annual festival. Its not summer without a kick-off

    that included a pancake breakfast, barbeque, family

    parade, youth water balloon fight at the baseball

    diamond and a family dance.

    On the second day of the festival, FCWC staff

    organized a youth go-cart competition at the arena

    (although, age didnt stop some staff members fromjoining in the fun), a youth sling shot competition,

    chilli cook-off, sling-shot competition and scramble.

    Youth artists showcased their paintings,

    drawings, carvings and other work for display and

    sale to start off the third day of the festival.

    Presentations were also made to the youth artists

    that participated in the showcase.

    The fun also turned competitive, with prizes to

    be won in several events. Children participated in

    races, a bunny hop and balloon race. Another 20

    people tested their skills at the horse shoe

    competition.

    The festival wouldnt be complete if it didnt

    bring out the best NCN has to offer at the two-day

    youth road hockey tournament. Up for grabs were

    gifts cards, skateboards, bikes and helmets.

    For a better look at the festival and its events,

    another I Am A Kind Man workshop for men only from

    August 6-9, 2013.

    Am a Kind Man"reminds us that violence has never been anacceptablepartof Aboriginal culture. This workshop embracesthe Seven Grandfather Teachings which show us how to live inharmony with Creation throughwisdom, love, respect, bravery,honesty, humility and truth.

    The workshop was initiated by Aboriginal men from across

    Ontario who are very concerned about the problem of mens

    violence and abuse against women in Aboriginal

    communities.The overall purpose of theinitiative is to engagethe men of our communities to speak out against all forms of

    abuse towards Aboriginal women.

    1. To provide education for men to address issues of abuse

    against women;

    2. To re-establish traditional responsibilities by

    acknowledging that our teachings have never tolerated violence

    and abuse towards women;

    3. To inspire men to engage other men to get involved and

    stop the abuse;

    4. To support Aboriginal men who choose not to use

    violence.

    Participants from past workshops who shared theirexperience were excited and happy with the content of the

    workshop and many northern communities expressed interest

    in this workshop to be available within their home community.Aboriginal men (and women in a separate workshop) wanto take part in the I Am A Kind Man/Woman workshops to:

    Ben Guay Sr.

    Hi, my name is Ben Guay Sr., I am from

    The Pas, Manitoba, and a member of the

    Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN). I am

    grandfather of twelve grandchildren, which I

    am very proud of and love so dearly. I have five

    with children. What attracted me to work for

    the NCN Wellness Centre was that it wasfamily focused and designed for healthy families

    and communities.

    According to an Elder, Lawrence Tobacco

    We are only here for one reason and that is to

    help out. So that is why I am here to help out

    because I believe in healthy families for healthy

    communities.
