You’ll find haunted historic sites, time cannons fired on city streets, 19th century costumed guides spinning incredible tales of days gone by and a unique link to Mary Poppins.
The region’s eventful history stretches back over 5,500 years when the Butchulla Aborigines first made their home on Fraser Island. Captain Cook sailed its coast in 1770, Matthew Flinders landed ashore in 1799, while the region was settled in the 1840s.
This rich history lives on in historical villages complete with old settlers’ huts, schools, churches and working displays; lovingly restored colonial architecture and remarkable museums and historical collections.
Quirky characters, tours and events ensure you will be entertained and engaged time and again.
Discovering the past at the Hervey Bay Historical Musuem
Fraser Coast Museums Discovery Trail
A love of history is not compulsory – just a willingness to get lost on an amazing journey into the past following the Fraser Coast Museums Trail.
Fraser Coast Discovery Trails have been developed by Fraser Coast Regional Council © 2011 www.ourfrasercoast.com.au
City Walk Tour, Maryborough
If you like your history served with a large side-order of fun, then the Fraser Coast is the only place to step back in time.
q MARYBOROUGH PORTSIDE CENTREHoused in the former Customs House (c.1901), the Portside Centre celebrates the region’s early history with interactive displays including listening posts with first settler stories, time capsules and multimedia displays.
Digging for clues exhibitThe exhibit features Aboriginal and European artefacts from an archaeological excavation at the site of the first European township in the Wide Bay Village, the original township of Maryborough. It was settled for a short period only from 1848 to 1856, before the need for a deeper port lead to the townspeople relocating to the city’s current location.
w BOND STORE MUSEUMRevisit the time when sly grog running was rife and opium was a legal import with a visit to the Bond Store Museum. The Bond Store managed the thriving import, export and liquor trade of the era and the museum documents the history of the Port of Maryborough. The earthen floor and ancient handmade bricks in the original 1864 building downstairs still exist, as do many of the liquor barrels left over from that time.
Experienced guides and scores of publications help give people insight into the region and the city’s colourful origins.
sound and light showEnjoy a 3 minute light and sound experience based on the arrival of the first boat load of immigrants at the Port of Maryborough.
Wharf Street, Maryborough. Ph: (07) 41 905 730. Open 10am – 4pm Mon–Fri. Weekends and public holidays 10am – 1pm.

A perfect starting place to start the Fraser Coast Museums trail is Portside – the site of Maryborough’s original port district and one of Australia’s largest immigration arrival points. This was the place more than 22,000 free settlers took their first steps on Australian soil after months at sea between 1859 and 1901 before starting their new life in the region and beyond.
A number of leading museums and historical collections are found within Portside’s heritage streetscapes and riverside parks.
Self guided and guided tours are also available.
