Haisai! How are you all?

It is hard to believe that

the summer is almost over.

The picnic we had on July

was a big success. It gave

me a great pleasure to see

many children, teen-agers

and new members at the pic-

nic. With the support and

cooperation of many volunteers’ and officers, we

had a great time. I thank you very much from the

bottom of my heart.

How about the Eisa!

Many of team members were first time perform-

ers, including Akasanaji performers. Mike Muncy

and Sachi Parker’s performances were impressive

and memorable. In spite of the hot weather, they

practiced four consecutive Saturdays’, prior to the

picnic.

It was a great Eisa, don’t you agree? The per-

formance was so great; it caught the attention of the

group at the Northern shelter. The Davis family

were enjoying their re-union. They came to ask our

Eisa team to perform for them. Since the most of

them were senior citizens, our team gracefully ac-

cepted their request and agreed to perform for them.

In return, they donated generous amounts to our

Japan disaster relief fund. Well, Chizuko san wrote

in detail about the Eisa, so I will keep my comment

short, except I will say that the job well-done.

Again, I would like to express my sincere appre-

ciation to all the volunteers in any capacities. With-

out your help, our picnic would not been such a

grand experience for all of us to enjoy.

残り少ない夏の季節、いかがお過ごしでしょうか？

去った７月のピクニックは役員ならびに会員の方々

のサポートにより、無事、成功に終わりました事、

心より感謝いたします。

子供さんやティーンエイジャーが多く来られ、また、

あたらしい会員の方も参加なされました事、とても

うれしく思いました。

さて、エイサーはいかがでしたか？

ワンカラ、ワンカラと初めてエイサーにチャレンジ

なされた方達、お疲れ様でした。

毎週土曜日、暑い中、４週間猛練習された甲斐があ

り、イッペー、イッペー、

チビラーサタン！ 赤サナジーのマイク・マンシー

さん、幸・パーカーさん、感謝、感謝です。

私たちグループのエイサーのあまりの素晴らしさに

隣でピクニックをしていたシニアの皆さん達からお

願いされて、その方達の前でパーフォーマンスをし

て喜んでもらいました。

そのお礼にというわけで、私たちの募金活動である、

東日本太平洋沖大地震へ寄付をいただきました。

エイサーの事はちずこさんが詳しく書いておられま

すので、私はこれにて終わりましょう。

ボランティアでヘルプして下さった皆さん、どうも

ありがとうございました。

本当に楽しいピクニックでしたね、来年のピクニッ

クが今から楽しみです。

2011 Picnic and Eisa Celebration

The 16th annual picnic and Eisa celebration was

held in July, at the Highbanks Park in Columbus

Ohio. The park has been used for our annual festi-

vals for over 14 years. Highbanks is named for its

massive 100-foot high shale bluffs that tower over

the Olentangy State Scenic River. Tributary streams

cutting across the bluff have created a number of

deep ravines extending into the eastern part of the

park. You may want to explore this part of the park

on your next visit. 第 16 回ピクニックは例年通

り、コロンバス市郊外にあるハイバンクス・メ

トロ・パークにて行なわれました。このあたり

の地名であるハイバンクスにちなみ、高くそび

える川沿いの土手に展開している自然の豊富な

公園です。機会がありましたら、公園の中を散

策して見るといいでしょう。

Many members traveled across Ohio

to attend the Eisa celebration. The

Manson shelter had two large grills;

Richard Marang and Mike Muncy start-

ed the charcoal and began cooking hot dogs and

steak burgers. Kazumi, Terry & Jesse Makowski

and Justin McVey pitched in to finish up the cooking

at the grill. It was a hot day, especially for the cooks.

多くの会員の皆さんが参加して下さった今年の

エイサー・ピクニックですが、今回はいつもの

シェルターとは違い、こじんまりとした様相の

中、行なわれました。お子さんやご主人達も楽

しみにしているバーベキューにおいては、毎年、

リチャード・マラングさんを中心に、 マイ

ク・マンチーさん、カズミ・マコースキーさん、

ご主人のテリーさんと息子のジェシー君、また

ジャスティン・マクベイさんが加わり、暑い中、

汗を流しながらもお肉を焼いて下さりました。 A blue pop top canopy was set up to serve as a

anniversary were available at the greet-

ing desk. Noriko and Manami also updated the

member list as members paid their membership dues

and guests paid for admission to the picnic. 今年の

会場受付はシンシナティー地区の会員を中心に

担当していただき、ノリコ・コーブさん、マナ

ミ・ブレッドミヤーさんらが来場した皆さんを

迎えてくれました。ノリコさんとマナミさんは

会費の徴収、会員情報のアップデートの作業も

担当してくれました。暑い中、お疲れ様でした。

Many Kai members arrived, cleaned the tables

and set up table covers to prepare the picnic tables

for our lunch. Members mingled with each other

and enjoyed each other’s company. We have nice

spirited members whom always pitch in to organize

the events and help each other out. ピクニックの当

日は沢山のボランティアが来てくれ、ユンタク

しながら、和やかに会場の準備、ランチやテー

ブルのセッティングなど忙しく働いていました。

At 11 AM the picnic began with some an-

nouncements about the park rules by Karl Kortlandt.

We then had a welcome message from our president

Hideko Moore. We then started our buffet style

lunch. American foods included steak burgers and

Hot dogs plus we had tables full of Okinawan foods,

cookies, cakes and fruits. We want to thank every-

one who pitched in to prepare the foods and keep the

drinks cold. I know a last minute dash to the local

stores was made by Mike Moore to get a few miss-

ing items. Thanks Mike.

During the lunch, a 15 minute youtube video was

shown on the overhead projector. It was created by

Mitzi Uehara Carter and is titled Nuchi du Takara

(Life is a Treasure). The video was about the early

childhood experiences of several Okinawans during

the 1940’s. It highlighted their experiences during

World War II. After lunch, the children and adults

played tug of war, enjoyed bean bag tossing, lawn

darts and games that were set up by Kazue Motoki.

11 時より始まったピクニックですが、今年はカ

ール・コートランドさんより友の会からのお知

らせについてお話があり、その後、ヒデコ会長

からピクニック開会のあいさつがありました。

ランチを食べながら沖縄戦を生き抜いてきた戦

争花嫁たちの生き様について紹介しているドキ

ュメンタリーのビデオを見、友と語らいながら

楽しく過ごしました。皆さんが食事をしている

間、マイク・ムーアーさんがピクニックに必要

なアイテムを買出しに行ってくれました。マイ

クさん、どうもありがとうございました。食事

の後、子供たちのアクティビティも行なわれ、

元木和江さんを中心としたボランティアの皆さ

んがゲームを取り行いました。

gan as he worked to take in and set up the last mi-

nute changes to the music schedule. 会場で音楽を

special insulation bags to keep

several gallons of ice cream cool.

With the high heat we were both

surprised and trilled to have this

ice cream treat. フサコさんとご主人のフレッ

ド・ムーターさんを中心にご家族

の皆さんでアイスクリームパーラ

ーを催してくださり、会の子供た

ちはおいしいご褒美をもらってご満悦の様子で

した。アイスクリームは子供だけではなく、大

人にも大うけで、ビッグヒットでした！ムータ

ー家の皆さん、どうもありがとうございました。

2012 Picnic Planning We are starting to keep records of the number of

people that attend each event. This will help us go-

ing forward to order the proper amount of foods.

Next year we may have some new games and activi-

ties. Please help us by sending in your suggestions

for future picnics. If you have any picnic pictures

that you wish to share, please let me know and I can

add them to our web site. 来年のピクニックに向

友の会の会員の皆さんへ、

エイサー隊まとめ役のちずこ・リースです。大成功のう

ちにエイサーピクニック終える事ができ、エイサー隊の

まとめ役として嬌しいかぎりです。ピクニックのおよそ

2 ヶ月前に今期のエイサー隊のまとめ役になってほしい

との連絡を受け、何をしたらいいのかと私が思う間もな

く、和江さんのしっかりした連絡網と、みよこさんのエ

イサー指導で、短期間に見事なエイサー隊が出来ました。

参加下さった皆さんより数々のおほめの言葉をいただき

ましたが、まず初めに成功のみなもとは、縁の下の力持

ちとして良子バーガンさんを中心としたボランティアの

皆さんが、隊員のユニフォームを短期間で縫ってくれた

（完成させた）おかげだと言う事も皆様に報告いたしま

す。

１５年前、オハイオ友の会のエイサーが始まりました。

当初は会員の有志が集まり、手探りの中でエイサーを練

習し始めました。あれから１５年の月日が過ぎ、今では

二世のメンバーも参加するようになりました。今年は練

習期間も短かく、参加者も初心者が多かったので、まず

はエイサーを覚える事を目標にしました。練習をしてい

るうちに、たとえ初心者でもエイサーのユニフォームを

着て踊った方が良いね、との話が出始め、せめてユニフ

ォームを持っていない若手男性ふたりが着るために、大

きめのユニフォームをつくりましょうという話になりま

した。ですが結局、全員おそろいのユニフォームがあっ

たほうがいいだろうとの事で、エイサーピクニックの２

週間前に急遽、全員分を作る事になりました。良子バー

ガンさんを中心に、秀子会長、みよこさん、なりこさん、

えいこさんが集まり、短い期間に１２着のユニフォーム

を完成させました。皆様の底力にはとても驚きましたが、

この方々なしには、今回のエイサーの素晴らしさはあり

えなかった（半減しただろう）と思っています。本当に

ありがとうございます。

今回のエイサー隊は新しく参加した方々をはじめ、以

前は踊っていたが,近年は踊った事がないという方々が多

く、初めは試行錯誤でしたが、美代子さんの指導の下、

だんだん練習に熱が入り、結局三曲踊をほとんどまちが

いなく踊れるようになりました。はじめはばらばらだっ

た太鼓の音が、がだんだんまとまっていく時の気持ちは

本当に素晴らしく感じれるものです。

このようにして、今年のエイサー隊の太鼓隊は猛スピ

ードで成長していきましたが、忘れてならないのが、毎

年エイサーピクニックのために衣装を準備して、手踊り

で参加してくださった皆様です。年に数回しかお会いで

きない皆様ですが、もくもくと毎年太鼓隊を支えて頂き、

ありがたく思っています。

新しくエイサー隊に参加してくださった皆様、また毎

年参加してくださった皆様、そしてエイサー隊に暖かい

応援の拍手を下さった皆様に深く感謝を申し上げます。

当会のエイサーを活発にすることは、これからの友の

会の活力になります。また当会のエイサーは家庭でも練

習できるようＤＶＤに収録しなおしてくれましたので、

エイサー隊にご関心のある方は、ぜひ会のほうに連絡を

下さい。

最後になりましたが、琉球国祭り太鼓でエイサーを盛

り立ててくださった、Vargus 一家には感謝でいっぱいで

す。Vargus 家の子供たちの成長を踊りを通してみる事が

出来ることの嬉しい事は私だけではないと思います。日

本に本帰国された前高橋副会長一家も、すばらしい家族

のチームワークをエイサーを踊って見せてくれた事など、

今もなお鮮明に思い出します。このように沖縄の伝統で

家族がまとまれる事、これもまた友の会の家族がめざす

ひとつの目標を示して下さっていると思います。これか

らも友の会に家族でエイサーをする方々が増える事を願

ってやみません。

Hello, fellow Tomonokai

members. I am Chizuko

Reese. I had an honor of co-

ordinating this year’s Eisa

group. I am very pleased to

see our group’s performance

was a huge success at this

year’s Tomono Kai’s picnic.

I was asked to lead this year’s Eisa group two

months before the event date. Honestly, I felt a little

overwhelmed of the effort needed to start up the new

group. While I was trying to decide how to proceed,

my fellow supporter Kazue Motoki stepped forward.

Kazue Motoki took a lead role as she contacted

members, coordinated meet-

ing dates and opened her

home for us to practice our

Eisa dance routines. Kazue

also became an Eisa per-

former.

Miyoko Smith taught us the movement and rou-

tine of the Eisa. Despite of the

fact that it only gave us a little

time to practice, we did a great

job. Many members came to

complement our performance at

the event. I thank you for your

kind support to the Tomono Kai

Eisa & Taiko Group.

Although practicing the movement and routine is

hard work, we enjoyed learning the Eisa dance.

Speaking of hard work, I like to share with all of you

the key component for our success. It was “Team

work”, The majority of our members were first time

Eisa performers or with little experience in perform-

ing Eisa. So our intention was to learn the basic

movements and dance routine. We were discussing

to furnish our costumes but we did not think it was

possible to do so since we were just starting out and

there was not enough time to produce costumes.

to her heart and she decid-

ed to help the group by

sewing their uniforms.

were at her house, sewing

many uniforms for our

group. Those sewing volunteers got together and

worked very hard. The result was 12 sets of brand

new uniforms for us. We were moved by their kind-

ness and thoughtfulness. This was an evidence of

true team work and volunteerism.

I could not thank them enough. I think the

Tomono Kai’s Eisa & Taiko group started out with

the right foot forward. Now, we are planning to

have regular practice meetings starting in August. If

Hamilton always wanted to perform the Eisa Dance.

Due to a lot of hard work on her part and a lot of

practice, her wish finally came true.

Well, one last thing, but not the least, I want to

thank Mutsumi Vargas and her family for their per-

formance. We greatly appreciation their perfor-

mances.

Our former vice president, Akio Takahashi and

his family showed us how kind we can be to each

other. Please look at the pictures on the following

page and remember the first performance of our new

Eisa & Takeo group.

Yoko Snodgrass, thank you for sharing your Sanshin playing skills that you have with the Kai. You helped

the newly formed Sanshin group to get started. You and the sanshin group are promoting the culture of Okina-

wa here in the U.S. Many members have made wonderful comments about the sanshin performances. It feels

my heart with joy as I listen to the music and see the reaction of the crowds. Hideko Moore

ようこ・スノッドグラスさん、三線グループを立ち上げてくださり、感謝・感謝です。オハイオ州で

沖縄の芸能である三線の演奏を身近に聴ける楽しみを下さり、ただ、嬉しく思います。ピクニックへ

Picnic - Business Meeting Notes – 7/17/2011 The bylaw votes were counted by the election committee. They passed by an 86% “Yes” vote. The new by-

laws were printed out and signed on 8/21 by Hideko Moore, Kazumi Makowski and Kazue Motoki. Richard

Burgan gave an update on the payment of membership fees and the expected payment of funds for the Japanese

relief fund. June McVey and Satoko Kortlandt discussed the plans for the trip to Okinawa in October. They

also presented two guests from the Japanese travel agency IACE. They have a special rate for travelers going to

the Japan for the 5th Uchinanchu festival. Tom McVey gave an update on the new member directory.

７月１７日のピクニック・ミーティングより

会のバイロー（規約）の改正について、皆さんより投票していただきましたが、 ピクニック時に開票コミッ

ティーの皆さんで開票作業を行いました。 改正案は“イエス”への投票数が 86％をしめた事により可決されま

した。 改正後のバイロー（規約）は８月２１日、ひでこ・ムーアー会長、和美・マコースキー副会長ならび

に元木和江（理事代表）の三名による承認の署名が入り、友の会の正 > 式なバイロー（規約）となりました。

リチャード・バーガンさんより友の会の会費徴収と日本への災害寄付金についてのアップデートが行われまし

た。 ジューン・マクベイさんと里子・コートランドさんより１０月に開かれるうちなーんちゅ大会参加者へ

トリップの説明がありました。 また、二人より IACE の社員（ゲスト）の紹介も行われました。 IACE の方よ

りうちなーんちゅ大会への旅費について特別料金についての説明がありました。 トム・マクベイさんより会

員連絡名簿の作成についてアップデートがありました。

Miyoko Smith served as the entertainment coordinator for 15 years and is now taking time to enjoy Eisa

dancing and Sanshin performances. Miyoko kept track of the Kai costumes & equipment, planed & organized

the dances and entrainment for 15 years for the Spring and Eisa festivals. We thank Miyoko for her service to

our Kai.

15th Anniversary Items – Sold

Thanks to Yoshiko and Richard Burgan for storing and bringing the extra T-shirts, glasses and bags from the

15th anniversary to the picnic. Yoshiko, set up the items for sale and helped members to select items. Mem-

bers purchased several of these items and $95 was generated for the Kai. We will continue to find ways to sell

these extra items.

在庫を今年のピクニックの時に売り出しました。合計＄95.00 の売り上げがありました。よしこさん、

Member Directory The 2011 member directory was completed on 12 September. This new directory has the Kai members

listed by last name and also by city and first name. Thanks to Nobuko Hargrave, Nariko Hamilton, Satoko

Kortlandt, Kathie Schoren, Kazumi Makowski and Hideko Moore for helping to call members and get updated

telephone numbers, email addresses, mailing addresses and permission to be listed in the directory. Please con-

tact your area contact if you need an extra copy of the member directory.

Kaishu (Grand Master) Kazu-ko Chibana Volkmar and the Aharen Honryu Keisen Wa no Kai Okinawa Dance School held a special performance of Okinawan dance on June 4th in Westerville, Ohio. Many of

our Kai members who are students in Wa no Kai participat-ed, together with the Ohio Sanshin Ume no Kai and seven special guest performers from the Aharen Style in Okinawa. The event was attended by many of our Kai members as well as guests from the surrounding Okinawa Kais’ of Washington DC, Chicago, Michigan, North Carolina, At-lanta, and Indiana. Many of our Kai members also enjoyed the after-celebration dinner. Wa no Kai students also joined the guests from Okinawa as Special Guest Artists at this year’s Asian Festival in Columbus over Memorial Day weekend, where they performed and led a workshop to introduce Okinawan dance and culture.

Financial Notes:

Thanks to all the members who have paid their 2011 memberships. Membership dues allow us

to fund events and allow us to keep the Kai operating. Back in April, only 20% of the 2011 dues

were paid. Richard Burgan and Tom McVey have sent out membership forms and now, 80% of

the household memberships are now paid for 2011. Dues reminder letters were last mailed on

The 5th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival 2011 We continue to answer questions that come in from the Okina-wan Prefecture about our members that are planning to come to the Uchinanchu festival. June, Hideko and Satoko have been busy coordinating travel plans, making fans, ordering hats, designing shirts and ordering seeds for planting in Okinawa. Currently, about 40-50 people are planning to go to this festival. We will be march-

ing in a parade and will be wearing shirts, scarfs, hats and waving fans. We will also carry a Kai banner. This parade will last about two hours and will be followed by fun events in Naha.
