What is FCCLA?• FCCLA stands for Family Career and Community Leaders of

America. • It is the only student lead organization with the family as its

central focus.• It was known as FHA (Future Homemakers of America) prior

to 1999. • The organization was founded on June 11, 1945.• Males and females are welcomed into the organization.• Each year over 200,000 students join over 10,000 chapters in

50 state associations as well as District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

• The organization encourages personal growth and leadership development in teens through family and consumer sciences.

Purposes• To promote opportunities for personal

development and preparation for adult life.• To strengthen the function of the family as a

basic unit of society.• To encourage democracy through cooperative

action in the home and community.• To encourage individual and group involvement

Fall Training• During the fall, each region

conducts workshops for members.

• Students can take FCSA tests and attend many sessions to help their chapter succeed.

• Fall training is a great opportunity for all students to get a “little taste” of a region or state meeting.

Regional Leadership Meeting

• Regional meetings are held during the months of January- February.

• At this meeting students can participate in STAR events, run for offices, take FCSA tests and attend leadership tracks.

• There are 5 regions in the state of Texas with each region having 17 officers.

• Region V’s meeting is January 30 – February 1, 2014.

State Leadership Meeting• The State Leadership Meeting is held

each year. • The 2014 State Meeting will be held in

Corpus Christi, April 10-12, 2014.• At this meeting students can also

participate in STAR events, attend awesome leadership tracks with speakers, take FCSA tests, and hear wonderful motivating speakers.

National Leadership Meeting

• The National Leadership Meeting is held each July and offers members and advisors opportunities to develop leadership skills and learn ways to enhance chapter action through participation in issues-oriented workshops and activities.

• The 2014 National Leadership Meeting will be held in San Antonio, Texas July 6-10, 2014.

• In July of 2012 Angela Angold represented HHS at the National Meeting and won Silver.

FCCLA Magazine

• Teen Times is FCCLA members’ national magazine with coverage of teen issues and chapter ideas.

• Members receive four issues each year.

• All of the information for the Texas FCCLA members can be found on the website www.texasfccla.org.

Community Service Projects

To help members strengthen their Community Service projects, this

program: •helps young people build skills for family, career, and community roles•Provides youth-centered learning experiences related to Family and Consumer Sciences Education•encourages young people to develop the positive character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship

Scholarships • Most scholarships available through

FCCLA are offered to students planning to major in family and

consumer sciences (FCS).  • Applicants must have been a

member of the Texas Association, Family, Career and Community

Leaders of America.

Scholarships • A standard application form for scholarships processed through the

state office, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is

used. • The applications are due to the

state FCCLA office March 1.

FCCLA Scholarships• C.J. Davidson Scholarship - FCCLA awards 10 scholarships

to outstanding members in Texas.  The scholarship is for $2,000 per semester and will be continued for eight semesters if the recipient continues to be qualified under the rules regulated by the scholarship.  (must major in FCS and receive a teaching certificate for FCS)

• Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship- The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will provide ten, four-year $12,000 college scholarships to be awarded to outstanding members of the Texas Association, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. (open to any member - no restrictions)

• Regional Scholarships- Ten scholarships will be awarded annually.  Attach a theme of approximately 500 words on the topic of how your involvement in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and Family and Consumer Sciences has prepared you for your future.  (must major in FCS)

FCCLA Scholarships

• Blue Bell Creameries Scholarship- Awarded to FCCLA members that have been active in programs and projects. Must write an essay and submit application. Last year 5-$1000 were awarded.

• Texas Farm Bureau Scholarship - Must have been a regional or state FCCLA officer in addition to the scholarship eligibility requirements. This is a $1,000 scholarship.

Leaders At Work

Leaders At Work is a national program that recognizes FCCLA members who create projects to strengthen leadership skills on the job. These skills contribute to success across a broad range

of career fields. Leaders At Work motivates students to prepare for career success.

Dynamic Leadership• Dynamic Leadership is a national FCCLA program

that helps young people build leadership skills. It provides information, activities, and project ideas to help young people:

• recognize the lifelong benefits of leadership strength

FCCLA involvement • become strong leaders for families, careers

and communities

Career ConnectionCareer Connection is a national FCCLA

program that guides young people to link their options and skills for success in careers,

families, and communities through individual, cooperative, and competitive activities, members: • discover their strengths• target career goals • initiate a plan for achieving the lifestyle

Japanese Exchange Here’s an opportunity to live in Japan next

summer with a Japanese host family. Seventeen FCCLA members are selected to experience a Japanese tea ceremony, traditional Japanese foods, or climb up Mount Fuji with a Japanese brother or sister. This is a summer you will never forget!

Ready, Set, Read!

• A literacy project designed for chapter members to help children improve reading skills.

• Ready, Set, Read! can be used to participate in STAR Events, such as Chapter Service Project.

• Project Ideas:– Read to children

– Conduct a book drive

– Donate books to local Boys and Girls Club

Financial Fitness• Financial Fitness is a national FCCLA peer

education program that involves teens teaching teens how to make, save and spend money wisely.

• This program empowers youth to educate their peers in the following areas:– Banking Basics– Cash Control– Making Money– Financing your future– Consumer Clout

STOP the Violence

• Students Taking on Prevention is a peer-to-peer outreach initiative that empowers young people to recognize, report and reduce the potential for youth violence.

• The goals of the project are to:– Empower students with attitudes, skills, and

resources to make their school safer.– Reduce the potential for youth violence in

schools with the trained FCCLA chapters.

Families First• Through the Families First peer education

program, young people learn to be strong family members.

• There are 13 different events in which students can compete in.

• The top 6 winners at the regional level compete at the state level. The 1st place winner at state travels to the national meeting to compete for gold, silver, or bronze awards.
