Factual Writing Instruction Manual Factual writing is used to convey essential or informative information about a place, product or about an event or article. I chose to analyse the user manual for this novelty batman toy car. The manual was produced by Kenner, an American toy company to instruct users on the operation and assembly of their 1997 toy replica of the Batmobile from the film franchise ‘Batman’. The fonts and styling of the text works to draw the attention of the reader and guide them across the page in the correct manor. The numbers ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘4’ are bold and larger than the informative text to clearly guide the reader while also making the manual more interesting to look at. This is probably done to make the user manual easier to read by the younger audience that this product is aimed at. It is important in this example that the language is concise and very easy to understand because a child (the target audience for any advertisement or design) needs to be able to learn how to assemble and operate this item. The instructions are clearly marked and and illustrated to make them as easy as possible to follow for owners of all ages. The information is also clear, precise

Factual WritingInstruction Manual

Factual writing is used to convey essential or informative information about a place, product or about an event or article. This is probably done to make the user manual easier to read by the younger audience that this product is aimed at.It is important in this example that the language is concise and very easy to understand because a child (the target audience for any advertisement or design) needs to be able to learn how to assemble and operate this item. The instructions are clearly marked and and illustrated to make them as easy as possible to follow for owners of all ages. The information is also clear, precise and accurate meaning that the user will not be confused by the instructions when attempting to use them.

Factual WritingLeaflet

This is an advertisement leaflet for a summer camp for children. It is a colourful and aesthetically pleasing piece of work designed to appeal to both adults and parents. The colours will instantly grab the attention of any reader and are more than likely intended to stand out against a crowd of other leaflets from other local and non-local businesses. The text and fonts used reflect this intention using large and emotive text that will clearly define what is being advertised by the leaflet.

In my analysis of a leaflet I chose this summer camp advertisement. The use of imagery against a colourful background and factual, important text helps to make the leaflet seem consise. This is made even more apparent as the most important pieces of information such as price, times and dates as well as ages ranges for the classes and activities available are shown in bold and colourful text boxes to draw the reader towards them. This use of visual hierarchy helps to streamline the reading experience and allows the reader to glean important information quickly or read more in depth if necessary. This is a very important feature to utilise when constructing a leaflet as the reader may sometimes be speed reading a large bunch and you want your leaflet to stand out against all other as the best, most informative and most exciting. The theming used also promotes the whole summer camp aesthetic and therefore works well to compliment the ideas of what a parent or child would expect from a summer camp.Factual writing can be found in the text describing the camp and it’s activities as well as the pricing and timings available.

The text used on this magazine cover is heavily stylised in fitting with its image and the articles and headline advertised. The colours used are bright and well defined helping the reader to more easily see what text belongs to what article. The articles that are included on this page are tailored to the specific audience that reads this magazine: those interested in music and well established rock, punk and metal bands. The page is titled, ‘NEWS’ which establishes exactly to the reader what to expect the page to contain and detail and the headlines of the articles included are emotive and in all caps to draw in the reader and create a sense of urgency and importance around them. For example ‘SLASH GETS FIXED UP’ makes an avid fan or reader think about the possible injury or issue being addressed and why the need to be fixed. It peaks interest and grabs the attention of the reader through it’s use of strong and simple language. The font of all text throughout this page is consistent and therefore helps to promote a sense of continuity across all the articles included.
