4.4.3 Fatigue

(1) Problem

It is well known that a structure may fail under a cyclic load (Figure 4.4-1) even if

the stress due to cyclic load is considerly less than the material strength. Cyclic loads

might occur due to the changing of live load, e. g. by bridges, especially railway bridge,

or crane runways.

Fatigue is well recognized in steel structures. The verification of ultimate limit states

of fatigue is therefore a part of design rules for steel structures. Fatigue failure can also

occur in reinforced a pre-stressed concrete structure, as under laboratory conditions well

in practical situations. The fatigue properties of reinforced concrete structures are

closely related to the properties of the component materials, concrete and steel, and the

connection between them. Thus, for under-reinforced members failing in bending the

fatigue properties are directly related to those of reinforcement. For over-reinforced

structures and for those where shear and bond are the governing factors the conditions

are much more complicated.

The fatigue strength of materials is obtained in the so called once-step test. There are

the tests, in which the stress range Δσ during the test remain constant. The relation

between the number of load cycles up to failure and the stress range Δσ characterizes

the fatigue strength. This relation is the S-N-Diagram (Figure 4.2.-2) or called as

Wöhler-curve.

In the middle of the last century august Wöhler observed a dependency of the shape

of the test specimens. Thus the fatigue strength is not only a material property.

It was also found that under laboratory conditions some test specimens survived if

the applied stress ranges remained under a certain limit – the so called endurance limit –

where other did spacimens not survive and showed a time dependent strength (Figure

4.4-2).

Under real construction conditions this endurance limit does not exist, because other

influences as e.g. corrosion also negatively contribute to the fatigue resistance. The fa-

tigue failure starts from a local defect, e.g. a pit due to corrosion. Around this defect a

crack starts to progress until the remaining area of the specimen is not able to bear the

load. A rupture takes place (Figure 4.4-3).

It was also detected that for steel the S-N-curve behaves linearly if a double logar-

ithmic scale for S and N is chosen (Figure 4.4-4).

Fatigue failure is also a risk in slender R.C. structures, requiring closer studies of fa-

tigue behaviour in view of the trend toward better material utilization. In most of the

observed failures, where the fatigue behaviour of R.C. structures might have contrib-

uted to a major part, it was firstly observed that the behaviour under service conditions

was progressively injured. Failures were early indicated by increased deflections and

crack widths (Figure 4.4-5).

Therefore, unannounced fatigue failures are up to now not known. In many cases not

only fatigue contributed to the failure, a combination with corrosion increases the

danger of failure at R.C. structures (Figure 4.4-6).

The necessity of a special verification of sufficient safety to fatigue failure can be

derived from the fact that the failure mode under static and cyclic loads might differ. A

well known example is the railway sleeve, which fails under static load due to shear

failure, bending compression failure, or bond failure of the prestressing wires, but under

cyclic loading because of fatigue failure of the prestressing wires.

Therefore, both the existing European standards and those under preparation attach

greater attention to avoid fatigue failure in the design of concrete structures.

The regulations of the CEB FIP Model Code 1990 are now being discussed and

practically applied to fatigue designs for Eurocode 2, Part 1. The new design rules are

already a part of the standard for bridges, Eurocode 2, Part 2. They may be tested now

by European experts. On the other hand, European regulations do not exist e.g. for

crane runways, up to now. The regulations of CEB FIB Model code 1990 are also the

background for the fatigue design in the new german code DIN 1045-1 and DIN-FB

102–104.

(2) Fatigue verification in Model Code 1990

In general, the fatigue verification must be carried out by means of limiting the

damage Dd of the structure caused by cyclic loads. The purpose is to ensure that

γSd = partial safety factor, which takes into account the model uncertainties in determining the applied stress ranges. γSd = 1 might be allowed if the models are chosen on the safe side, otherwise γSd = 1,1,

γs,fat1=1.15 = partial safety factor for fatigue resistance of steel rein-forcement, if the S-N-line is defined as 5 %-fractile (90 % level of confidence).

The total damage of the given stress range spectrum follows applying the Palmgren-

Miner-Hypothesis

If the load cycles is smaller than 108 the fatigue design can be simplified with a stress

verification. In this case the number of load cycles is assumed to 108 for the verifica-

tion, the maximal stress range of the load combination should be considered in the cal-

culation.

It must be verified that

Limiting the damage equivalent stress ranges

From the comparison of the design value Dd of the total damage of a given stress

range spectrum with the damage at failure Dlim = 1 can be derived the so called damage

equivalent stress ranges s,equ. These stress ranges must be compared with the values

of the S-N-line Rsk(N*) at a defined number of cycles, e.g. N*.

The latter method is widely used when load spectra are known (see e.g. EC2, Part 2).

To realize the verification, some rules have to be given to determine the stress ranges

or stresses in the R.C. structure as well as the fatigue resistance of steel and concrete.

(3) Stress calculations under cyclic loads

The stress calculation may be performed basing on linear elastic behaviour of steel

and concrete; by way of simplification, the ratio of the elastic moduli for steel and con-

crete may be assumed as = 10.

Steel stress in R.C. structures is calculated usually assuming cracked concrete cross

sections; for prestressed components only if the decisive fatigue load generates tensile

stresses in the checked cross section. The calculations of the steel stresses shall be made

without considering the tensile strength of the concrete. Due to different bond proper-

ties of reinforcing and prestressing steels the stress increase in reinforcing steel after

crack occurs in concrete is greater than those in prestressing steel. This phenomen must

be considered in the fatigue verification. Where no detailed analysis is performed, the

steel stresses of the reinforcing steel calculated under the assumption that the cross sec-

tion remains plane must be increased by a factor s.

(4) Fatigue resistance of steel and concrete

(4.1) Fatigue resistance of steel

The S-N-curves given in the Model Code reflect the experimentally estimated fatigue

strengths of reinforcing and prestressing steel.

The S-N-curves of reinforcing and prestressing steel are expressed by Eq. (4.4-8)

The change of slope of the S-N-curve is assumed to take place at N = 106 cycles for

straight and bent bars, for prestressing steel, and at N = 107 cycles for welded bars and

steel under marine environment. The slopes of the S-N-curves are called k1 for N N

and k2 for N N.

The characteristic fatigue strength of steel embedded in concrete is 40 to 70 % lower

than its material fatigue strength. This reduction of fatigue strength is mainly caused by

fretting corrosion effects. The S-N-curves in Table 4.4-1 take this effect into account.

The 95 % fractile of survival that was obtained at a 90 % level of confidence from

test results has to be considered as a characteristic value of the fatigue strength. The

scatter of fatigue strength in the test series is considerable. Furthermore, even for

straight reinforced bar samples the test results vary widely depending on product and

country of origin. For example, the test results indicate a higher fatigue strength for

German reinforced steel (ribbed bars) than for British ones. In both the mentioned cases

and the case where one S-N-curve represents the fatigue strength of a whole group of

different structural elements (for example mechanical connections), the S-N-curves

have to be interpreted as worst case lines. Often there is not enough data available to

carry out a proper statistical analysis (for example on the fatigue strength of curved

steel tendons and on splice devices). In this case the S-N-curve is to be seen as an engin-

eering judgement considering the scatter of the test results. The curve is expected to be

a safe assumption. Hence, a design using the S-N-curves in Table 4.4-1 might lead to

conservative results. The user of the standards is at liberty to apply higher values of fa-

tigue strength than shown in Table 4.4-1; insofar, these higher values are determined by

testing.

(4.2) Fatigue resistance of concrete and verification procedure

The experimental results concerning fatigue resistance of concrete under compres-

sion is within the Model Code described by the following set of equations

The S-N-line for concrete behaves more or less polygonal in a half logarithmic scale.

The fatigue load is seldom applied directly after the erection phase. This can be

taken into account by the knowledge of the coefficient ßcc(t), which takes into account

the development of strength with time.

The verification methods can be simplified following the same procedure as for

steel.

No further verification is necessary, if

Otherwise, it must be shown, that fatigue safety requirement are met by inserting the

required lifetime (expressed by the number of load cycles) and comparing it with the

number of cycles to failure

If the equation (4.4-11) is not applied, the verification by means of spectrum of load

levels can be used. In this case the actual stress levels for concrete can be calculated by

equation (4.4-9) and (4.4-3).

(5) Application example

Given is a reinforced crane girder for crane runways according to the German

DIN 15018 [15]. The stress spectrum S2 is defined according to Figure 4.4-24. The ex-

pected lifetime is expressed with n = 107 load cycles.

The structural analysis leads to the following internal forces and support reactions:

In order to meet the ultimate load condition for bending, a longitudinal reinforce-

The fatigue verification is performed for a damage equivalent stress level according

equation (4.4-6).

determined.
