Fasting and Intelligent Autolysishh, fasting!!! What has happened to you? But of course, you've become trendy and
mmercialized…and we all now what that means Both ill"informed endorsers and
sinformed critics have crawled out of the compost to e#press their opinions on fasting
d deto#ing""pro and con Was it really $ust a little over a year ago that % taled about anBC News article that proclaimed that long"term fasts can lead to muscle breadown and a
ortage of many needed nutrients, which can &actually weaen the body's ability to fightfections and inflammation&? And yes, that statement is true as far as it goes, but by noting very far, it totally misrepresents the actual truth Well, as bad as that article was,
ngs have gotten worse
ans to celebrities lie Ben Afflec, Beyonc(, Benedict )umberbatch, and everybody's favorite whipping girl, *wy
ltrow, now promoting fasting, the attac dogs have gone into hyper drive ow, we regularly see snary articles suce in Slate that opined, &-uice cleanses accomplish e#actly none of their physiological or medical ob$ectives. they
ishize a weird, obsessive relationship with food, and they are part of a social shift that reduces health /mental, physi
d, sure, spiritual0 to a sign of status hey're annoying as hell&1
tishize? % mean really! %t's probably worth mentioning that the article didn't cite a single study to support its contentmerely referenced other articles with similar opinions and some phone interviews with people who agreed with thei
int of view +ersonally, % find, that to me, that ind of article is &annoying as hell&
fact, 3late and B) and most other critical articles are wrong here are actually several studies that demonstrate thlue of fasting And one study that came out $ust last wee would certainly seem to undermine the doubters As it tur
t, fasting produces definite, 4uantifiable benefits in the immune system…and most liely in many other body system
d organs as well We'll get to that study in a bit
What I've Said About Fasting Over the Years
%n the article that % wrote last year on water fasting and $uice fasting, summarized a number of things that % had been saying for the last 56
years %n addition to citing a number of studies that prove that fasting
produce profound, measurable benefits, % e#plored the concept ofintelligent autolysis, which simply means that your body has the abili
intelligently ad$ust to changing circumstances""breaing down tissue
one part of the body and reassembling it in another, as circumstancesre4uire 7r to put it another way, because this process is intelligent, y
body, while fasting, breas down unneeded, damaged, and to#ic tissu
first hen when you start eating again, it rebuilds from the ground up
fresh, new, healthy tissue
% also emphasized that the benefits of fasting lay in this process of
elligent autolysis, not in weight loss %n fact, when it comes to weight loss, the critics are right as prolonged fasting
counterproductive since, with no calories, your body 4uicly goes into shut down mode to prevent starvation %n otords, prolonged fasting slows your metabolism so that your body learns to &survive& on fewer calories his means t
u progressively lose less weight as the fast goes on, but even more important, you have a high rebound effect once y
rt eating again…since your metabolism is now slower and it taes even fewer calories to put weight bac on 3hort
ting and alternate day fasting, on the other hand, can be useful tools to ic start the weight loss process As for fasa form of deto#ing, we'll tal more about that later, but 4uicly8 yes, there is some benefit in that regard, but fasting
ore of a complement to the deto#ing process, rather than a primary means of deto#ing itself
8/16/2019 Fasting and Intelligent Autolysis
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/fasting-and-intelligent-autolysis 2/7
e bottom line is that the celebrities pushing fasting for deto#ing and weight loss are misguided and the critics attac
those reasons are missing the point…and the critics who simply say that there is no value to fasting and that it isngerous and unhealthy are $ust wrong he ey value to fasting lies in autolysis, which we'll tal more about later
What's new
what's changed? Why are we looing at fasting again?
nd the answer is +rof 9alter : ;ongo +rof ;ongo is an American biogerontologist and cell biologist nown for his
dies on the role of starvation and nutrient response genes on cellular protection and aging %n fact, +rof ;ongo was
hind the studies % referred to in last year's article that revealed the benefits of fasting when it comes to cancer andemotherapy
Well, he's bac with a new study, published $ust last wee in the $ournal )ell 3tem )
that now supports many of the things %'ve been saying about fasting for 56 years, pluadds a new twist to the e4uation vis"<"vis stem cells and the immune system that ev
ups the ante he core conclusion of this new study is that fasting not only protects
against immune system damage "" a ma$or side effect of chemotherapy "" but it alsostimulates the regeneration of the immune system by shifting stem cells from a dorm
state to a state of self"renewal = 7r to put it another way8 fasting, for as little as th
days, "flips a regenerative switch" which prompts stem cells to create brand ne
white blood cells, essentially regenerating the entire immune system 7r as +rof;ongo says, &%t gives the '7>' for stem cells to go ahead and begin proliferating and
rebuild the entire system& he three day figure is especially interesting since doingthree day fast once a month has been my recommendation""along with one day a we
and five days twice a year""for pretty much the last 56 years
he new research shows that this could be particularly beneficial for people sufferin
from damaged immune systems, even cancer patients on chemotherapy And it coualso help the elderly whose immune system become less effective as they age, mai
rder for them to fight off even common diseases And, of course, it would help anyone $ust looing to tune up their
mune system and optimize their ability to fight any disease
t hold on, it gets better as we dig deeper into the study's results
the study points out, in earlier studies, both with mice and a +hase 1 human clinical trial involving patients receivinemotherapy, periods of not eating significantly lower white blood cell counts his is not particularly surprising and
rtainly would match the e#pectation of fasting's critics o repeat8 if you don't get sufficient calories, your body begi
ut down, losing its ability to generate new cells""including immune cells owever, what this latest study found is thst in mice, fasting cycles then &flip a regenerative switch,& changing the signaling pathways for hematopoietic stem
ls, which are the stem cells responsible for the generation of blood and immune system cells As the study's authors
te, &We could not predict that prolonged fasting would have such a remarable effect in promoting stem cell"basedgeneration of the hematopoietic system…What we started noticing in both our human wor and animal wor is that
hite blood cell count goes down with prolonged fasting hen, when you re"feed, the blood cells come bac 3o werted thining, well, where does it come from?&
ey continued, &The good news is that the body got rid of the parts of the system that might be damaged or old
efficient parts, during the fasting ow, if you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy or ageing, fa
cles can generate, literally, a new immune system…When you starve, the system tries to save energy, and one of
ngs it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells [or any cells, for that matter, Ed.] that are n
eded, especially those that may be damaged&
e study has ma$or implications for healthier aging since immune system decline contributes to increased susceptibil
ease as people age By outlining how fasting cycles "" periods of no food for two to four days at a time over the cou
si# months "" ill older and damaged immune cells and generate new ones, the research also has implications for
8/16/2019 Fasting and Intelligent Autolysis
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/fasting-and-intelligent-autolysis 3/7
emotherapy tolerance, for those with a wide range of immune system deficiencies, including autoimmunity disorder
d anyone looing to refresh their immune system
We've always nown that prolonged fasting forces the body to use sto
of glucose, fat, and etones, but we now understand that it also brea
down a significant portion of older white blood cells ;ongo liens th
effect to lightening a plane of e#cess cargo :uring each cycle of fastthis depletion of white blood cells induces changes that trigger stem c
based regeneration of new immune system cells %n addition, prolong
fasting reduces the activity of the +>A gene, an effect previously
discovered by the ;ongo team to e#tend longevity in simple organismand which has been lined in other research to the regulation of stem
self"renewal and pluripotency "" that is, the potential for one cell todevelop into many different cell types +luripotency is the reason the
earchers believe the regeneration effect happens systemically throughout the body when fasting, not $ust in the imm
stem""although that's all the researchers measured in this study +rolonged fasting also lowered levels of %*2"1, a
owth"factor hormone that ;ongo and others have lined to aging, tumor progression, and cancer ris @
ow, before we get too e#cited here, it's important to rememberthat when it comes to the human body, things are rare
e"dimensional rying to e4uate aging to high levels of %*2"1 can run you right into a parado# ere's why %*2"1 i
oduced primarily by the liver %t stimulates systemic body growth and has growth"promoting effects on almost every
the body, especially seletal muscle, cartilage, bone, liver, idney, nerves, sin, hematopoietic cell, and lungs %t is oe most potent stimulators of cell growth and proliferation %*2"1 is a potent inhibitor of programmed cell death %n o
ords, it counters the wasting effects associated with aging and prolongs the life of cells 3ounds good, right?
e problem is that this can be a two"edged sword %f you don't have cancer, it eeps you young and vibrant %f you alve a cancer, it can speed up its growth and proliferation hat said, %*2"1 is the primary reason that people tae *
ections or * secretagogues""to remain youthful as they age %*2"1 is the primary mediator of the effects of hum
owth hormone * is released from the pituitary gland and then stimulates the liver to produce %*2"1
hereas * stimulates production of %*2"1, under"nutrition retards it hus, under"nutrition, or prolonged fasting, ows cells to die, thus clearing the way for new cells to tae their place he bottom line is that %*2"1 is neither good
d And fasting is neither good nor bad hey are each part of a health puzzle, and each is useful for what it does 7ny"in, day"out basis, stimulating * and %*2"1 production in the body is probably a good thing for maintaining yod vitality and living a long healthy life as it ma#imizes the lifespan of your e#isting cells and tissue :oing regular @
ts to temporarily stop that process, brea down unhealthy tissue and cells, and trigger stem cells to rebuild new cell
sue would seem to be a perfect complement to that routine %n other words, it's not one or the other, but each in its o
ace and time
nd now, let's return to the most important conclusion drawn from the study
nd the good news is that the body got rid of the parts of the system that might be damaged or old, the ineffic
rts, during the fasting ow, if you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy or aging, fasting cycles
nerate, literally, a new immune system&
is, of course, is an absolute restatement of the principle of intelligent autolysis that % and many other proponents ofting have been espousing for decades his is the true value of fasting, not weight loss and deto#ing
nd finally, +rof ;ongo says, &We are investigating the possibility that these effects are applicable to many different
stems and organs, not $ust the immune system&
is, of course, is something that those of us who have wored with fasting for years already now firsthand %t's whyt %t's why fasting is almost always part of any catastrophic illness program We already now how +rof ;ongo's stu
ll turn out hey will find that intelligent autolysis occurs throughout the body, as does intelligent rebuilding once th
tient starts eating again here is nothing magical about this his is what the body is designed to do an is the onl

imal that seems to not now this otice how in nature virtually every other animal stops eating when it is sic Wit
s telling them that they need to eat )heetos and pizza when they're sic, they innately understand the need to fast aneir bodies brea down the diseased tissue and heal itself 2asting is consistently observed in the animal ingdom
rtunately, animals don't have nutritionists telling them to do otherwise
he Medical Community Sea!s
e study's co"author, anya :orff, assistant professor of clinical medicinethe 3) orris )omprehensive )ancer )enter and ospital, said,
While chemotherapy saves lives, it causes significant collateral damage
the immune system he results of this study suggest that fasting maytigate some of the harmful effects of chemotherapy&5
ell, so far so good, but then she adds, &ore clinical studies are needed,
d any such dietary intervention should be undertaen only under the
idance of a physician& But this raises the 4uestion8 how muchidance can a doctor provide when they now nothing about fasting and
e most liely septical of the entire process anyway? he simple fact of
e matter is that if you have cancer and you're undergoing chemotherapy,
s, you're going to have to wor with your doctor""but you're going tove to tae the lead when it comes to arguing for a complementary
ting program
*raham Coo, emeritus professor of immunology at niversity )ollege ;ondon, weighed in on the topic and saide study sounded &improbable& Ceally? And this is based on what research? All this pronouncement shows is that
metimes people who are very intelligent /and yes, doctors are intelligent people0 can say some very stupid things
sentially, his rationale for this opinion translates to, &%gnore the study results rust me %'m a doctor&
nd then my favorite pronouncement of all, )hris ason, +rofessor of Cegenerative edicine at );, said, &here ime interesting data here %t sees that fasting reduces the number and size of cells and then re"feeding at E= hours saw
bound hat could be potentially useful because that is not such a long time that it would be terribly harmful to some
th cancer ut ! thin the most sensible way forward would be to synthesi#e this effect with drugs. % am not sur
ting is the best idea +eople are better eating on a regular basis&
her than putting it in bold, does anything else really need to be said about this statement? And as +rof ;ongo points
here is no evidence at all that fasting would be dangerous, while there is strong evidence that it is beneficial&
onclusion
e fundamental problem we face when it comes to fasting and deto#ing is that there are thousands of e#perts, each weir own opinion and protocol here's water fasting and $uice fasting and drining deto# $uices without fasting her
lon cleansing protocols and colon cleansing pills you tae while eating your normal diet here are fasting program
ing weight and fasting programs for deto#ing""with multiple interpretations as to what deto#ing really means And
hen we tal about deto#ing, are we taling about intestinal deto#ing, liver deto#ing, heavy metal deto#ing, idney anllbladder flushes, $uice fasting, water fasting, the aster )leanse, or any of a number of other variations on a theme
onder the establishment is so hostile to the concept
WebMD says in countering the whole concept of deto#ing and fasting, &he good news is that your body has its owtural deto#ifying process that wors 4uite well he liver and idneys do a good $ob of processing chemicals and
minating them in sweat, urine, and feces 2or e#ample, the colon's natural bacteria deto#ify food wastes and its muc
embranes prevent bacteria and to#ins from reentering the body he liver combines its own chemicals with other
emicals, maing water"soluble compounds that your idneys can e#crete in urine And some chemicals are also e#cough the lungs and sin&F

according to the aing 3ense of )hemical 3tories report published by the ;ondon based group Sense about Scien
he human body is perfectly capable of protecting itself from life's e#cesses %t is a myth that the deto# process can beeded by special diets, body wraps or pills&G As the report goes on to state, pretty much echoing Web:'s sentime
he gut stops many potential poisons getting into the system in the first place And the liver deals with those that do
-ohn osins, a to#icologist, was also 4uoted in the &aing 3ense& report, &here's a sucer born every minute
ly thing that loses weight on a deto# diet is your wallet&
nd finally, )atherine )ollins, an 3 dietician, described deto#ing as &a mareting myth& and a &silly concept&
ou get the idea8 neither WebMd nor Sense about Science are very big on fasting and deto#ing
nd yet, according to a =66E study published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, the incidence of chronic
nstipation in the nited 3tates is $ust over 1E percent, or well over F6 million people E )learly, for those F6 million
ople, their normal elimination channels are not up to the tas hey need intestinal deto#ing
en there's the fact that the incidence of liver cancer in the nited 3tates tripled between 1IEF and =66FJ And again
ese people, there's something about the processes of the liver cleansing itself that is not woring )learly, for these
ople, their livers can't deal with the to#ins that get through the gut
ne of the reasons for all this confusion is that people are conflating deto#ing and fasting, and as % said, although they
ated, they are not the same thing 3o, with that in mind, let's tae a loo at fasting
asting
would agree with fasting critics that fasting, unless done properly, is not a great way to lose weight hey are absolut
rrect that e#tended fasting, for two reasons, is not what you want 2irst, because of the lac of protein, much of youright loss during fasting tends to be muscle""not what you want And as % mentioned earlier, any fast longer than 5J
ns the ris of causing your metabolism to slow down, which means you gain weight more easily once the fast is ove
you want to use fasting for losing weight, then fast one day a wee hat doesn't cost you muscle tissue and it doesn
w down metabolism, but it does save you a couple of thousand calories or more that day ultiply that by F= wee
ar and you've save yourself =6"@6 pounds a year hat's not a &mareting myth& %t's simple math8 calories in vs calot
for deto#ing, if you're looing to remove to#ins from organs in your body, then you need to run protocols that are
ecific for those organs 2asting in con$unction with those protocols can facilitate them, but it does not replace them
what e#actly is the benefit of fasting then?
uite simply, as we have been saying for 56 years, it's intelligent autolysis! As +rof ;ongo's study showed, during fas
e body gets rid of the cells and parts of your body that are damaged or old""the inefficient parts, if you will hen, w
u start eating again, it replaces those parts with new, undamaged cells and tissue hat's why you fast hat's the pri
nefit now proven by science""a benefit not provided by your liver and idneys, even on their best day, despite whateptics might say
asting Schedule
%'ve stated in other reports, the basic fasting schedule % lie to follow is8
• 7ne day of $uice fasting with chlorella a wee /% lie ondays because it cleans things up after the weeend a
breas the flow after any weeend indulgences % may have allowed myself And if %'m trying to lose any weigh
do both ondays and 2ridays for a couple of wees By not doing consecutive days, my metabolism never slo
down, and % don't have to worry about poor nutrition or loss of muscle mass0 2or an e#planation of why % pref
$uice fasting with chlorella or spirulina vs water fasting, chec out my report on Water 2asting and -uice 2astin

actually e#plores fasting in considerable detail, also covering things lie what types of $uices to drin and wha
$uicers to buy0
• 7nce a month, % lie to e#tend that one day $uice fast to three days here's an old saying in the world of fastin
7ne day gives your body a rest. three days is good for minor repair. and five to seven days wors as a complet
overhaul for your body hans to the study $ust published, we now now e#actly what minor repair means
• With that in mind, twice a year, % now do a five"day $uice and chlorella fast in con$unction with my bi"annual
idneyLliverLgallbladderLblood deto#, instead of that month's three"day $uice fast % do one of those the first we
-anuary to cleanse my body of all the bad stuff % ate over the holidays""and to brea any bad eating habits % ac4
during that period % do the other one mid"summer, but am more fle#ible as to the e#act dates /ote8 Hou wouthin it goes without saying, but we eep getting 4uestions on e#actly this issue8 do not fast or deto# while pre
or nursing0
e bottom line is that once a month %'m now letting my body intelligently self"digest old, damaged, and to#ic tissue a
en replace it with new, dynamic, revitalized tissue welve times a year %'m rebuilding and recharging my immunestem""and every other ma$or system in my body And along the way, as a side benefit, %'m helping control my weigh
hat's not to love about regular proper fasting?
