First, cut a small swatch of the fabric and see which side will fray most easily. Keep the frayed edge at the short ends of the fabric when cutting the fabric pieces.

Cut two pieces of fabric 36 inches long by 11 inches wide. You can make your scarf as long as you like by simply adding or subtracting from the length. Then, align the pieces together, right sides facing, and pin along one of the short ends. Sew a 1/2 inch seam along the pinned edge only.

Press the back of the seam open with an iron.

Then, top stitch a 1/8 inch seam along both sides of the seam.

Lay the fabric flat with the right side facing up. Measure and mark 6 inches up (along the sides of the fabric) on each short end. Then, using a marking tool (like a dress maker’s pencil) draw a line connecting the marks. The fabric below this line will be frayed later on.

Create a paper template of the design by printing it at full size using embroidery software. If you don't have embroidery software, you can cut a piece of paper the shape and dimensions of the designs to help with placement and centering.

Position the template above the line you just drew – we placed the template so that the bottom edge of the design is about 1 1/2 inch from the line. Also, center the template side to side by measuring the width of the fabric and dividing by two. Poke a hole in the template and mark the fabric. Also, mark the horizontal and vertical axis points. Position and mark the template on both ends of the fabric.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks. These lines will be used for hooping.

Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric and embroider the design.

Repeat the hooping and embroidering process for both designs. When the designs have finished, carefully trim away the stabilizer on the back of the embroidery.

To prepare the fabric for the back side of the scarf, follow the same steps as you did for the front piece – cut the pieces, sew them together, press the back seam open, and top stitch the seam. Then, align the front and back pieces, right sides facing. Align the center seams together and pin in place.

Mark the “fringe” line on the back of the embroidered front piece. Then, sew a 1/2 inch seam along the long side edges in between the fringe line marks – leave side edges below the fringe line marks and the short ends open for turning.

Turn the scarf right side out and press the side seams. Top stitch a 1/4 inch seam along the side edges in between the fringe lines. Then, sew a seam along the fringe lines, closing the open ends.

To create the fringe, carefully unravel the fabric flaps at both ends using a seam ripper. You can fringe both flaps at both ends – or, you can fringe one flap and trim away the other.
