Future Pathways Information Evening

A reminder to Year 11 and Year 12 students and their parents that the annual

information evening will take place on Thursday 15th June from 6:30 to 8pm.

The evening is an opportunity to gain insight into the UCAS process as the

current Year 12 students embark upon their university applications. We will also have

guest representatives from Aim Apprenticeship and Reading University on hand to provide the latest information and

advice. I have invited Year 11 parents to attend but there will be another opportunity to gain future pathways advice

if you are unable to make this information evening.

Farewell and Good Luck to the Last of the 1990's at Altwood

Friday 12th May was a really great day for all of our Year 13 students, most of

whom have been studying with us since 2010.

The day started with breakfast in the Sixth Form Centre for all staff to bid farewell

to the Year 13s. Tea and coffee was served by Miss Brittain, Miss Holloway and

Mr Atkinson-Young, and an array of fruit yogurts and croissants were on offer.

Following this, the Sixth Form presented awards to students and staff in fancy

dress, representing future professions. The most creative trio, the three 'grannies'

- Ashleigh Robinson, Jennifer Bridger and Alicia McIntosh have to be mentioned

for their larger than life impression which involved being supported around school

with the aid of their zimmer frames and walking sticks.

The day ended with a giant inflatable assault course on the field and picnic,

thankfully in the sunshine. It was lovely to end the year in such high spirits and we wish all our Sixth Form students

who have external examinations over the forthcoming months the very best of luck!

Power to Perform!

With the exam season well underway, Year 11 students are busy

juggling their exams alongside final revision and classwork. At this

busy time, it remains highly important that they keep their bodies

fuelled with the correct type of energy to ensure that the brain can

function at its peak when under pressure.

Just before the main exam period commenced, students were

provided with a new recipe booklet called ‘Power to Perform’ which

was commissioned by our partners at PiXL. The recipes have been

designed by celebrity chef Mark Lloyd and contain a balanced range of complex carbohydrates and protein to help

maximise concentration. A number of Year 11 students have been spotted eating these new recipes before exams

and have commented on how tasty and easy to prepare they are. If you have not tried them yet, why not try

cooking a couple during the May half term?

Ahead of the UK General Election, Mrs Nehme’s Year 8 tutor group,

together with Sixth Form students, are preparing a mock election

during tutor time. They are going to present four manifesto

speeches in assemblies during the week of the election, covering

the Conservative, Labour, Lib Dem and Green Parties. Each

manifesto will present the parties’ views on the following issues:

Brexit; education; NHS; the economy; and policing.

Once they have delivered their presentations, all the students in the

assembly will vote for the party they would like to win. We will not

have the use of Jeremy Vine’s swingometer, but look forward to

comparing the Altwood outcome to the general election results.

Liam Hayden and Chris Dance from Year 9 have been helping to

promote the event by designing a poster (top right) that will be

displayed around the school and on the information screens in The

Hub. The events will run for three days from the 6-8th of June.

A tremendous amount of work has gone towards the

organisation of the new vertical tutor groups. A huge

thank you to parents for communicating who they

wanted their children to be placed with. We have

managed to meet at least one of the requests of the

vast majority of students. The new arrangements will be

launched in June with students and parents being

notified before the launch date itself.
