The chilly ice and snow will soon be gone

and we will enjoy the splendor of spring

which brings with it new opportunities to

enjoy outdoor activities and growth in

our gardens. The Extended IFSP

Option Choice, now available to

MCITP children who will be turning three

and are found eligible for special

education services, also presents us with

many opportunities to grow the Infants

and Toddlers Program in new and

exciting ways.

MCITP staff is working hard to expand

community partnerships in order to

strengthen community resources and

supports for MCITP families. As you

enjoy the newsletter, please take time to

review the DRAFT Community

Partnership Model document on pages 8-

11. MCITP continues to work toward

improving and expanding quality inclusive

child care in Montgomery County. Please

The “Today’s Family” organization is offering a new support group

in Spanish for families of children with autism

When: The group will be meeting the 3rd Thursday of every month, 6:30-8:30 pm.

Today’s Family invites and welcomes Spanish speaking fathers and mothers of children with autism to meet in a

safe environment where they can share stories and discuss important issues like potty training, schooling, and the

impact of parenting a child with autism has on family relationships. Working in a group setting may not be appro-

priate for all parents but we open our doors to Spanish speaking parents the need a place to connect with par-

ents with similar experiences. There is no fee to attend.

SEEC's Parent-to-Parent Program

provides Information and Comfort!

SEEC's new Parent to Parent (P2P) program provides emotional

support and practical advice to families of children with special

needs by matching parents of newly diagnosed children, or those

in a formative transition period, with a parent who has

experienced a similar situation. "Our goal is to help families feel

less isolated, get the information they need, and become more

hopeful about their child's future," says Wendy Baumert, the

program's coordinator. Launched in January 2009, P2P is now

fully operational and parent/mentor matches are underway. A

mentor training manual focusing on effective communication

skills and empathetic listening has been created and used at

several training sessions. The manual also includes information on

local and statewide resources families may want to access, and is

being translated into Spanish to provide wider access to families

in need. P2P's long term goals include forming an advisory

committee to oversee the program, expanding training

opportunities for mentors, and organizing social outings for

program participants.

Perhaps you have found a comfortable child care program – whether a center or family child care

home; you have a good relationship with the staff or the provider and you feel confident that your

child is being cared for safely. Congratulations! However, you may also observe that the child

care staff needs a little extra support in working with your child with special needs or in managing other children in the

classroom. Help may be available from Montgomery County Infants and Toddlers Program – it is

important to discuss accommodations with your family service coordinator as well as with child care staff. Child care

programs should have written information about the individual needs of each child to ensure that his or her needs are

met. In some cases, child care programs need additional assistance in providing an inclusive environment. One source

of support is available through Montgomery County ChildLink and Early Childhood Mental Health

Mental health professionals can be assigned to child care programs to address issues such as:

Child Care Staff and Parent Relationships: Working in a childcare environment can be very stressful, busy and

full of changes. One of the first things that can be affected is daily communication between adults. Consultants can

help staff and parents recognize the importance of working together and keeping the lines of communication open.

Classroom Management: Groups may be difficult to manage, affecting classroom routines and structure (rules,

plans, activities, choices, etc.). A consultant can observe the classroom and make suggestions or give feedback in order

ChildLink is ―one number‖ for a variety of services and resources for families with children birth to age five, and it is

also the entry point for ECMH services in Montgomery County. ChildLink counselors will talk to providers about

services needed and assign a consultant. With the expertise and support of a consultant, parents and child care

providers learn effective ways to manage challenging behaviors and enhance children’s growth and development. We

Did you know...

Infants and Toddlers staff are able to provide services to children in childcare

settings as well as in the child's home and other natural environments. There

are many ways that services in a childcare setting can be offered, including

working with the individual child, with the group, and with the childcare

professionals. Early Intervention services are most successful when the parents,

child care providers and early intervention staff work as partners to meet the

child's needs and communicate about his or her progress. If your child is in a

center or home-based child care setting and you would like to have services from the Infants and Toddlers staff

provided in the child care program, let your service coordinator know about your interest. She/he can tell you what

options are available for your child and help you begin the conversation with your child care provider.

The Family Advisory Board (FAB) is a parent volunteer group that supports the Montgomery County Infants and Toddlers Program (“MCITP”) by: 1) representing the families’ perspectives to MCITP; 2) helping MCITP families connect with each other; and 3) advocating for more resources for MCITP to ensure that families have equal access to a quality, early-intervention program that meets their needs. Queridos amigos del MCITP,

La nieve pronto se habrán desaparecido y

podremos disfrutar del esplendor de la

primavera que trae nuevas oportunidades

para disfrutar de actividades al aire libre y el

crecimiento en nuestros jardines. La opción

de obtener un plan individualizado de

servicios ampliados para la familia (―Extended

IFSP Option Choice‖ por sus titulo en ingles)

ya está disponible para los niños del MCITP

que cumplirán tres años de edad y que son

elegibles para servicios de educación especial.

Esta nueva opción también nos ofrece muchas

oportunidades para crecer el Programa de

Infantes y Niños de formas nuevas y

emocionantes.

El personal del MCITP está trabajando fuerte

para ampliar las alianzas comunitarias a fin de

fortalecer los recursos de la comunidad y

apoyar a las familias del MCITP. Mientras

disfrute el boletín, tome el tiempo para

revisar el anteproyecto de asociaciones

comunitar ias en las paginas 8-

11. Continuáremos a trabajar para mejorar y

ampliar opciones de cuidado de niños que

son inclusivas y de calidad en el condado de

Montgomery. Por favor tome un momento

Talleres del CSEFEL Para Familias

CSEFEL (Centro de la fundación social y emocional del

Aprendizaje Temprano) se centra en promover el desarrollo social

emocional y la preparación escolar de niños desde el nacimiento

hasta los 5 años. Para apoyar este objetivo, se han desarrollado

capacitaciones familiares que promueven positiva soluciones para

familias de crianza de los hijos que tienen un desafío del

comportamiento.

El Programa de Infantes y Niños del Condado de Montgomery

ofrece una formación de CSEFEL para las familias. Se trata de una

intensiva series de formación de cuatro partes—los espacios son

limitados. Estamos ofreciendo la formación en español y tenemos

14 espacios disponible. Si hay dos cuidadores en su hogar, esta

formación debe ser atendida por ambos cuidadores si es posible.

Debido a esto, estamos ofreciendo estipendios de cuidado de niños

para las familias participantes en cada período de las sesiones.

discapacidades del desarrollo o físicas para relajarse, conectar y

aprender. Traigan a sus hijos, y podrán dejarlos en manos muy

capaces de nuestros proveedores de cuidado de niños, y usted

podrá disfrutar de una taza de té y relajarse mientras aprendemos.
