And you must love Adonai, your God, with your whole heart, with every breath, with all you have. Take these words that I command you now to heart. Teach them intently to your childrenpeak of them when sitting in your house and when walking on the road, when lying down and getting up. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart. With all your soul, and with all your might.

And all these words which I command you on this dayShall be in your heart, shall be in your heart.

And you shall teach them diligently unto your childrenAnd you shall speak of them when you sit in your house

When you walk by the way and when you lie down,And when you rise up, and when you rise up.

And you shall bind them for a sign upon your handAnd they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.

And you shall write them on the doorposts of your houseAnd upon your gates, and upon your gates.

That you may remember and do all My CommandmentsAnd be holy unto your God, unto your God, unto your God.

Ladino or Spanish, we all pray in Hebrew. That is one of the most wonderful things about Judaism, that we can say the same prayersas our great great grandparents did and if they were here with us we would all be able to pray in together!

Eternal is Your might, O God; yougive life to the dead; great is Yourpower to save!

(during the fall/winter)You cause the wind to blow and therain to fall.

(during the spring/summer) You bring down the dew

Your love sustains the living. Yourgreat mercies give life to the dead. You support the falling, heal thesick, free the fettered. You keepYour faith with those who sleep indust. Whose power can comparewith Yours? You are Master of lifeand death and deliverance.

God is powerful, but in a totally different way than we usually think about power. God’s strength is in healing the sick, helpingthose who are down and out to get up again, feeding the hungry, providing clothes to those whose clothes are in tatters. God is in

the compassion and sympathy and sense of humanity that comes when we do these things. We are so lucky that these are the kindsof things God cares about. We thank you God for the power to bring healing to a broken world.

Now is a time for Silent Reflection and Prayer

Commentary: In traditional services there is time set aside for silent prayer. Some that time is devoted to set prayers, and some to personal reflection.

Here are few reflections based on the traditional themes.

Shabbat Reflections

By herself, in the quiet of her own kitchen, she lit candles. She unplugged the phone, turneddown the answering machine, and decided she would not clean, do dishes, shop or handlemoney. She spent the day quietly reading, studying and praying - going to services if she feltlike it. She didn't want to feel bound by the full set of Shabbat laws, because she knew toomany people who had been raised Orthodox and felt trapped by the rules. So she madedistinctions: she might drive to visit friends, but not to do business. She might write a letterto a friend, but she would not make grocery lists or do any writing for her job.

Shabbat became a very different day from the rest of the week. "I'm always trying to do toomany things. I get burned out. I have a hard time balancing," she said. "Shabbat has givenme a real tool for balancing my time and my life. It’s really a holy day for me. It's a gift. When I thought of it as a sacrifice, as a rule, it was hard - I thought, 'If I can't go shopping,it'll make the rest of the week that much busier.' When I thought of it as a gift, I was ready. Idon't have to do anything. I'm there for myself, and I'm there for God."

-Judy Petonsk and Natalie Richman, Taking Your Judaism Personally

To set apart one day a week for freedom,A day on which we could not useInstruments which have been so easilyTurned into weapons for destruction, A day for being ourselves,A day for detachment from the vulgar,Of independence from external ObligationsA day on which we stop worshipping the Idols of technical civilization,A day on which we use no money,A day of armistice in the economicStruggle with our fellow humans and theForce of nature – Is there any institution that holds out a Greater hope for progress than theSabbath?

-Abraham Joshua Heschel

Prayer Reflections

Prayer will not come about by default. It requires education, training, reflection, contemplation. It is not enough to join others; it is necessary to build a sanctuary within, brick by brick, instants of meditation, moments of devotion. This is particularly true in an

age when overwhelming forces seem to conspire at destroying our ability to pray.-Abraham Joshua Heschel

Prayer is the search for silence midst noise. Life is so filled with tumult that we do not hearourselves. Failing to hear the voice of our spirit, can we hear the voice of God?...

There are those who are fearful to be alone with themselves. They run with the crowd, notout of love for others, but out of a fear to remain alone with themselves, terrified lest they

hear the voice of their own spirit, or fearful of remaining alone with their own void…

Prayer takes us beyond the self. Joining our little self to the selfhood of humanity, it givesour wishes the freedom to grow large and broad and inclusive. Our prayers are answered

not when we are given what we ask, but when we are challenged to be what we can be.-Rabbi Morris Adler

When you arise in the morninggive thanks for the morning light,

for your life and strength.Give thanks for your food

and the joy of living.

If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

-Tecumseh

To see a world in a grain of sandAnd a Heaven in a wild flower,

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,And eternity in an hour.

-William Blake

May we see the day when war and bloodshed cease, when a wondrous peace will embrace the world. When nation will not threaten nation, when humankind will not experience war;For all who inhabit this world shall realize that we have not come into being to argue, to hate or to be violent. For we have come into being to praise, to labor and to love.Compassionate God, bless us with the power of compassion.Fulfill the promise conveyed in Scripture:I will bring peace to the land and you shall lie down and no one shall make you afraid.I will rid the land of vicious beasts and it shall not be ravaged by war.Let love and justice flow like a mighty stream.Let peace fill the earth as the waters fill the sea.

-Attributed to Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav

I believe that even amid today’s mortar bursts and whining bullets, there is still hope for abrighter tomorrow. I believe that wounded justice, lying prostrate on the blood-flowingstreets of our nations, can be lifted from this dust of shame to reign supreme among thechildren of humanity.

I still believe that one day, humankind will bow before the altars of God and be crownedtriumphant over war and bloodshed, and nonviolent redemptive good will proclaim the ruleof the land. ‘And the lion and the lamb shall lie down together and everyone shall sit undertheir own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid.’ I still believe that we shall overcome.

Adonai ehad, ushemo ushemo ushemo ehad.

It is up to us to sing praises to Adonai, to glorify the One who began creation. You made our callingunlike that of other people, giving us a unique destiny. We bend at the knee and bow, knowingthat You, Adonai, are the Holy One, who spread out the heavens and laid the foundation of the earth,

whose glorious presence is in the highest heavens, whose mighty power is in the grandest places.Adonai is our God, there is no other. In truth, Adonai alone is our ruler, as it is written in God’s Torah:“Know this day and take it to heart that Adonai is God in heaven above and on earth below; there is no

other.”

As it is written in Your Torah: “Adonai reigns for ever and ever.” And it is said: “Adonai shall be acknowledged ruler of all the earth.

On that day Adonai shall be One and Adonai’s name, One.”
