Negation
Grammar using Negation
NegationSign: Grammar:NOT To form a negative statement, use the
sign NOT. Be sure to maintain a negative headshake throughout the statement.
NO To answer a yes/no question, use the sign NO. This should be followed either by a negative statement or a statement that gives correct information.
NONE In English you can use the word “no” to negate different kinds of statements. In ASL, to say you don’t have something, there is none to something doesn’t exist, use the sign NONE to form the negative statement.
Grammar Practice: Negative Responses
• Mary will sign six questions. You are to sign two negative responses to each question:1. Negative statement2. Negating and correcting the information
I will stop the video after each question and you will sign your responses to your partner. When I start the DVD again, Ron and Cinnie will each demonstrate one type of negative response.
