Program Overview

• Family Medicine-centred 2-year integrated,horizontal “Triple C” Curriculum (Compre -hensive learning, Continuity of learning and Family Medicine-Centred education)

• Community-based Family Medicine experiencefor 3 half-days per week through out most of thePGY1 and PGY2 years

• Most specialty rotations are scheduled in 4 or 8 week blocks of 6 half days per week

• The opportunity to work within well-developed,interdisciplinary Family Health Teams

• Inpatient and Emergency rotations in the state-of-the-art Peterborough RegionalHealth Centre, which opened in June 2008

• Utilization of strong Family Physician-ledservices including the Palliative Care Unit and Partners in Pregnancy Clinic

• Repetition of experiences in PGY1 and PGY2 years to allow residents to consolidateknowledge and increase confidence

• Low ratio of resident-to-physician preceptor and abundant opportunity for hands-on clinicalexperience (Family Medicine residents will most often be the only learner on a rotation.)

• An appropriate balance between learning and service

• Long Term Care Horizontal component in PGY1(4 LTC patients followed through PGY1 undersupervision of LTC physician)

Living in the Peterborough-Kawartha Region

Peterborough is a vibrant city of 75,000 that offersan incredible quality of life. Although just over anhour north-east of Toronto, Peterborough is acommunity unto itself. Situated on the historic Trent-Severn Waterway, and surrounded by 135lakes, outdoor options as well as urban amenitiesare at your doorstep.

The heart of the city is home to more than 60restaurants including multicultural cuisine, fairtrade coffee shops and the distinctive café district.Our arts and culture community, backed by astrong grass-roots scene, is renowned for events,exhibi tions and performances. Peterborough is a frequent stop for touring musicians, and thesummer boasts twice-weekly, open-air concerts by the lake (for free!).

Outdoor enthusiasts will find lots to do in everyseason. In summer, cycle or hike the extensive localtrail systems or paddle the Otonabee River for theday. For the more adventur ous, the KawarthaHighlands Provincial Park contains a spectacularchain of lakes and possibilities for week-long canoetrips. In winter, cross-country ski through JacksonCreek Park in the heart of the city, or travel north to

the Kawartha Nordic Ski Club for over 50 km oftrails. Or, for a magical experience, skate on thecanal under the lights of the largest hydraulic liftlock in the world.

Residents with families will find an excellent choice of schools, includ ing French Immersion and Montessori, as well as family activities. The Peterborough Zoo, complete with train rideand splash pad in summer, is only minutes away. The recently built Balsillie YMCA offers numerousprograms year-round. Much of the city can beaccessed via bike path, To encourage FamilyMedicine residents to take advantage of what our community has to offer, a variety of incentivesincluding free membership to the YMCA and other benefits will be provided for you by theGreater Peterborough Area Economic DevelopmentCommission. With the support a physicianrecruiter, Lori Richey at the Peterborough Family Health Team, assistance for the partners of residents who are seeking employment in thearea is also available.

The Queen’s Family Medicine Residency Program is at the forefront of medical education in Canada. Our goal is to prepare you to becomea capable and confident Family Physician with the skills to practiceFamily Medicine anywhere in the world.

Our curriculum is based on the CFPC “Triple C” Curriculum model(Comprehensive learning, Continuity of learning, supervision and patient care, and learning that is Centred in Family Medicine).

In the fall of 2011, the CFPC conferred full accreditation status on all our Family Medicine programs. In 2012 and 2016, theProfessional Association of Residents of Ontairo (PARO) presentedthe Department of Family Medicine with its Residency ProgramExcellence Award, nominated by residents and given yearly to oneRoyal College or Family Medicine Program. Our graduates can befound working across Canada and throughout the world, in manydifferent settings.
