Nobles, Ladies and Family of El Jebel Shrine:
What a great time we had going to Grand Junction for
their Installation. The bus trip was awesome and you
couldn’t ask for more! Kent and Mona (as usual) kept our
tummies full and our bodies hydrated. Our very own
H.P.P. Ken Jones earned his new nick name Astro! Funny
story but I’ll let him tell you the details surrounding it.
The ride over was beautiful and the conversations price-
less. Upon arrival Outer Guard Bill Brasstte greeted us
with the traditional Wendy’s cheeseburger (long story but
Bill enjoys telling it). Our Ladies were whisked away to
multiple vineyards to enjoy the time together (and I be-
lieve they did). It was a short time in Grand Junction but
so much Fun! The ceremonial they put on for our two
new nobles was fantastic. I would like to give a “Shout
out” to our New Nobles Doug Finley his Lady Julie
(Denver) as well as Scott Krebs and his Lady Ashley
(Montrose). Welcome to El Jebel Shrine! The El Jebel
Pipe Band traveled over to Grand Junction to mark the
occasion and make it memorable for those New Nobles.
Once again the Pipe Band leads by example. Congratula-
tions to Gary Weiszbrod and Lady Twila as newly ap-
pointed President of WCSC. Congratulations are in order
for the WCSC Shriner of the year Jerald Conyers. When
hard effort is recognized the result is these two nobles!
Job well done! Thank you to all the members and ladies
of WCSC for treating us to a great time. If you haven’t
been there you are missing out on a great time!
The February Family night was hosted by the T-Nobles
(the can-do unit) with a Sweetheart’s Theme. The El Jebel
widows were treated by the T’s to a complimentary meal
along with music, candy, poetry and a special perfor-
mance by the “HIKE” choir. We celebrated two new Aide
Emeritus creations Kent Eckley and Emit Hurdelbrink. So
many awards were given to hard working Nobles that our
recorder Jay Bobick could barely keep up. Our “Master of
Ceremonies” Cary Williams along with Bobby “The Po-
et” Juchem did a great job of running the night. That night
was a great example of “many hands make light work”
Thank you all so much!
The time honored “Shrine Family Brunch” was brought
back to life this year. It honors our past leaders and our
current Divan and Aides members. This is not a small
task to coordinate but well worth the effort! Thank you
for your help in bringing back our heritage Greg and
Kendy (Cusick) Rindone and to all the Aides that
attended and helped out “You Rocked It!”
Moving on to the March madness it seems we have a lot
of fun ahead of us. Saturday March 9th is our Family af-
ternoon meeting. This luncheon does replace our regular
Monday night meeting. The reason it’s being held on a
Saturday afternoon is because we are going to have a
“Shriners Child” there. The story that’s being told will
remind us all “why we do what we do as Shriners”. I en-
courage all to attend, meet the family and enjoy the time
together. Reservations are a must.
March 12th is IHOP day! Assistant Rabban Ron Wil-
liamson along with a host of other Nobles and ladies are
coordinating El Jebel’s attendance at the store locations.
Proceeds go to the Shriners Hospital, so come out, smile
and give a tip of the fez! Not sure how to get involved?
Call Ron 303-668-2072 he knows where the help is need-
ed.
St. Patrick’s Parade is March 16th. After the parade
please join us at Highlands Lodge at 3550 Federal Blvd
for a membership (new and old) party. The Pipe Band
will be performing and the fellowship is going to be sec-
ond to none! Come out and enjoy a lunch and libation
with us. Reservations are a must so we have enough food
and drink. See the flyer that “Astro” made this month for
details or call the office 303-455-3470.
This year has started off as a whirlwind of fun and ex-
citement and the reason is you. The people and units are
bonding together and it really shows. Remember “Many
hands make light work”!
Fraternally,
Bobby Marner

ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL
EL JEBEL - ALL ACROSS COLORADO
The first Temple “adventure’ for February was our
weekend trip to Grand Junction for the annual visit to our
Western Colorado Shrine Club. The bus was on the
road Saturday, 9 February right on time at 7:00 am. With
traffic it was an enjoyable 5 hours, forty minutes. We all
had great drinks, snacks and lunch provided and served
by Kent and Mona Eckley. If you didn’t go, you missed
an excellent feed. Arriving at 12:40 pm to the hotel, the
WCSC members were there to greet us with our room
keys, smiles, hugs and handshakes. There were 36 No-
bles and ladies from the East who joined the WCSC No-
bles and their ladies. After getting settled in our rooms,
the ladies went on the bus for an afternoon touring vine-
yards and tasting wine. The Nobles gathered at the hospi-
tality suite for socializing and more drinks and food. We
then adjourned for the Ceremonial that was given with
precision by the WCSC Officers. The two new Nobles
are Noble Doug Finley with his Lady Julie, who will be
with the eastern Nobles and Noble Scot Krebs with his
Lady Ashley who will be with the western Nobles. Let
all the El Jebel Nobles welcome these new Nobles. That
evening we all enjoyed the great banquet and the installa-
tion of the WCSC Officers and Board-of-Directors. The
Potentate then honored the new WCSC President, Gary
Weiszbrod, with his new Fez. The new Nobles were pre-
sented their membership cards and “papers” and then
their ladies crowned them with their Fez. It was a fantas-
tic weekend!
Our February meeting was Family Night chaired by the
T-Nobles who had an excellent program emphasizing
Valentine’s Day with rose, and candy for the ladies. The
evening began at 6:00 pm with the Presentation of the
Colors, Pledge of Allegiance led by Noble Ed Richards
and the National Anthem led by the Chanters and the
HIKE Choir signing. Our Chaplain then gave an Invoca-
tion prior to dinner. Noble Cary Williams was the Master
-of-Ceremonies for the evening and signaled each table to
join the buffet line. The dignitaries attending were Past
Potentates, Illustrious Sirs Jack Patten, Amer Plaisted,
Doc Powell, Jim Fitzpatrick, Ron Cosens, Tony Dattilo,
Matt Raia, Larry Clark and Rich Silver. From the Scot-
tish Rite was Matt Raia, Secretary and from the York
Rite was Steve Hubbard, Grand Chapter, Council and
Commandery Treasurer. From the Eastern Star was
Worthy Grand Matron Linda Wingate. Our new Noble,
Diego Rodriguez attended with his family. It was great
to see and welcome these members of the Masonic Fam-
ily.
After dinner the Potentate awarded an Emeritus Fez to
Emit Hurdelbrink and Kent Eckley. Illustrious Sir Bobby
then presented 11 of the 24 awards published in our Feb-
ruary Red Fez. (See February Red Fez for names)
Three other awards were presented at the Western Colo-
rado Shrine Club the weekend before. Yes, 10 more will
be presented in the future.
Assistant Rabban Ron Williamson spoke on the return
of the IHOP Pancake Day that collects funds for Shriners
Hospitals for Children. The Day will be Tuesday, 12
March at over 25 IHOP Stores throughout Colorado.
Make sure you spread the word and go to your local
IHOP on March 12th.
Noble Bobby Juchem introduced the HIKE Choir who
signed to three songs; Falling in Love with You, I Swear
and My Girl. The five signers were able to let all present
know that their mission is to raise funds for hearing im-
paired youth to improve their hearing abilities. HIKE
stands for Hearing Improvement Kids Endowment and
these young ladies and their entire organization have
raised over $6 million since their beginning. What a
wonderful philanthropy. Noble Bobby thanked the T-
Noble team and all others who made the night memora-
ble. He then read four poems commemorating the mean-
ing of Valentine’s Day followed by honoring the Shrine
Widows with words of thanks for their continued support
of El Jebel.
The Potentate thanked everyone for attending and
closed the evening at 7:55 pm, peace and harmony pre-
vailing.
Per Shriners International Bylaws. “There will be a special election for the El Jebel Treasurer position at the April 8, 2019 Stated Meeting. All nobles are encouraged to attend and vote.”

El Mejdel Temple No. 47
Daughters of the Nile
PQ Carole Bolduc
Happy St. Patty’s Day everyone! I’m sure all of you
have exciting plans for the big Parade in Denver and the
festivities afterward….good times!
El Mejdel has been doing very well this year with the
induction of several new members, and we will be having
another Ceremonial at our March Session. It’s been very
gratifying to have new members come into our organiza-
tion, particularly with the excitement and enthusiasm
they have shown. We welcome these new ladies and
know they will enjoy the friendship and fellowship of our
Temple; some of them have already joined a Unit. Get-
ting involved in the Temple’s activities is a sure-fire way
of enjoying our organization and its members.
At our February Session, our Pr. Chaplain, Judy Proc-
tor, conducted a beautiful Memorial Service. A white
rose was placed on the altar in tribute to each of the la-
dies we lost during the 2018 year. Londonderry Air was
performed by the El Mejdel Chimes and the Lord’s Pray-
er by the El Mejdel Dancers and Pageantry. Both perfor-
mances made for a beautiful Memorial.
In addition to our upcoming Ceremonial in March, we
will also be electing new Officers for the 2019-2020 year.
Hard to believe this past year has gone by so quickly.
Our Queen Kendy has done a spectacular job and repre-
sented our Temple beautifully. We are all proud of her.
March 30th will be Open Installation of Officers of El
Mejdel, and we hope a good many of you will attend.
We are all looking forward to spring and the upcoming
summer months of fun!

Congratulations, Mason of the Year for 2019! ‘Tis a
great honor for hard-working Noble Byron Walker, one of
the T-Nobles and one of those guys behind the scenes that
contributes so much to El Jebel without a lot of fanfare or
accolade.
Although he is of Anglo-Saxon ancestry Noble Byron is
a rare Colorado native; born in Pueblo, his father (also a
Mason) moved them to Minturn where he attended grade-
and high-school. While there, he started his travels to-
ward the east by joining the Leadville Chapter of DeMo-
lay. He also met the love of his life, Alice Pierson. Their
first official date was to a DeMolay dance and they were
married in 1959.
Byron is one of those never-heard-of graduates from
Golden’s own institution of higher education, the Colora-
do School of Mines. Back then, it was a “land grant
school,” meaning students had to take ROTC. This
worked to his advantage as he was commissioned in the
Army, served in the Army Corps of Engineers, and retired
as a Lt. Colonel after 21 years. This background he par-
layed into a civilian career working as an engineer all
over Colorado, culminating in environmental monitoring
of coal mines for the State of Colorado.
When he was two years old, he fell in love with electric
trains when he was given his first “O” gauge train (it still
retains its rightful place under his Christmas tree). After
riding on all the rails in Colorado, he did volunteer work
at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden. Being
raised at the foot of the Mount of the Holy Cross in the
Holy Cross District of the U.S. Forest Service, he spent a
lot of time hiking, camping (he is an Eagle Scout), fish-
ing, hunting, and skiing. Skiing on the training slope
used by the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, he
served 19 years with the National Ski Patrol. He gave up
hunting when it became necessary to carry the frying pan
in rather than pack meat out of the woods. His sleeping
bag and backpack tent are now in the archives of his base-
ment in favor of a self-contained trailer. His skis are per-
manently mounted on the wall of his garage. He still fly
fishes although now from gentle stream banks.
Masonry has been an important part of Noble Bryon’s
life. He was raised in Eagle Lodge Number 43 in Min-
turn in 1958. He joined the National Sojourners while
stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. and Scottish Rite in
Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. Fulfilling a long-time dream
of supporting Shiners Hospitals, he joined El Jebel
Shrine, and later the York Rite bodies in Golden. His two
sons, Victor and Andy, and his grandson Steven are also
Nobles in El Jebel. Byron is Past Master of Golden City
Number 1, and Past Grand Patron of Eastern Star in Col-
orado. Alice and Byron supported Rainbow Girls, Job’s
Daughters, DeMolay, and generally all bodies Masonic.
In appreciation, the Fellowship Hall in the Golden City
No. 1 Lodge building was dedicated to her memory, and
to Byron. Byron believes the saying “You only get out
of Masonry what you put into it” is less than a half truth.
One gets much more out than one puts in.
Widowed after 51 years and with the infirmities of age,
life changes. Yet Byron is sipping his blessings from his
saucer as his cup is overflowing. Grandson and WB Ste-
ven graduated from the University of Edinburgh and,
when he was married in Estes Park, many of his class-
mates attended the wedding, some from as far as Austral-
ia, Israel, and Kenya.
Didja know that in Bryon’s Golden City Lodge Number
1 Blue Lodge the candles are lit by using a taper lit from
a candle kept in the East, and that candle came from
Rosslyn Chapel? Yup, the famous chapel in Roslin,
Midlothian, Scotland (spelling differences intentional and
authentic).

Bill Greene (WØGVT): Bill was presented his 70-year Masonic pin at Weston
Lodge #22 on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. Three officers
from Bill's Casper, Wyoming Masonic Lodge #15 made the
278-mile drive to Littleton from Casper to present Bill with
this pin. A few of the Radops members including me had the
honor of attending Bill's presentation. I recall Bill Elmore, the
Master of Casper Lodge #33, making the statement that Bill
Greene was the very first member of their lodge who was pre-
sented with a 70-year pin. One note of interest is the three Cas-
per Lodge officers made the 556-mile round-trip within a 24
hour period!
Ken Behrens (KBØYLN): Ken was recently notified by the Secretary of his
home lodge that he would be presented with a 50-year pin
sometime in 2019. October 2018 marked Ken's 50 years as a
Mason. Ken's only lodge association is with the Franklin
Lodge #31, which is located in Pinedale, Wyoming. Although
a date for the presentation of Ken's 50-year pin has not yet
been set, Ken is patiently waiting for his lodge to contact him
with the scheduled date.
Ken is aware he may be waiting several more months
before receiving notification of the presentation date because
Franklin Lodge #31 apparently has a motto: “never a rush”. To
further illustrate this, Ken didn't receive his 2018 dues notice
until March of that year; three months after the due date of
January 1, 2018!
Pinedale, Wyoming is a small town with a population
of roughly 1400 residents and is located approximately 100
miles north of Rock Springs, Wyoming. Ken was stationed
there in the 1960s while enlisted in the US Air Force. Ken's
immediate supervisor was a mason from Boston, Mass who
requested a special compensation from the Franklin Lodge to
begin memory work with Ken.
After working with Ken for several months, an eighty
-year-old member of that lodge named Kit Carson was as-
signed to be Ken's examiner for his Master Degree. During the
examination, Mr Carson apparently became confused with the
order of the questions he asked Ken. After correcting Mr Car-
son a few times, Ken was instructed by Mr Carson to ask and
answer the remaining questions himself. The Master of Frank-
lin Lodge #31 interrupted Ken shortly thereafter, proclaimed
Ken proficient, and then rewarded Ken by assigning him to
learn all three lectures!
Ken and his lady Cyndi are hoping to make the 467-
mile commute to Pinedale.sometime this spring before the
lodge goes dark during the upcoming summer. Franklin Lodge
#31 has approximately 60 members. Ken has been the Secre-
tary of the Radops since the year 2000! The Radops would like
to thank Ken for 19+ years of continuous service to our group!
Radops Meetings:
The Radops weekly on the air meetings (aka Sunday
Night Nets) are held every Sunday evening at 7:00pm on
146.985 MHz. We also have an in-person meeting on the forth
Monday of each month at the Shrine starting at 7:00pm.

Recent Masonic Pin Recipients
The Radops would like to congratulate three of our
members who have either received or will be soon receiving
their 50 or 70 Year Masonic pins. These Nobles are Mac
McElravy (NWØJ), Bill Greene (WØGVT) and Ken Behrens
(KBØYLN). More information for each of these Nobles is be-
low.
Mac McElravy (NWØJ): Mac received his 70-year Masonic pin in 2018, which
was presented by the officers of the Aurora Masonic Lodge
#156. Mac currently resides at the Eastern Star Masonic Re-
tirement Community and has been a resident there since No-
vember 2017. Mac served as the Radops Treasurer for several
decades until November 2017 when his health no longer al-
lowed him to continue in that capacity. In January 2018 our
newly elected officers nominated Mac to serve as our Treasur-
er Emeritus, which he accepted and continues to hold. Mac is
one of our eldest active members and still participates in many
of our Sunday Night Nets via his Ham radio. In the Fall of
2018 Mac made a surprise visit at one of our monthly in-
person meetings held at the Temple. Everyone in attendance
was extremely happy to see him again in person!

Clowns for Hire?
By "Cuddles" Swede Nelson
President, El Jebel
Shriners Clown Unit
On occasion we have been approached with a
question like, "Can we hire one of you guys (Shriner
Clowns) for my wife's (child's, boss's, etc.) birthday
(retirement, anniversary, etc.) party?" The short answer
is, "yes and no." Please let me explain.
As Shriner Clowns, we are prohibited from direct
hire for private parties. However, if a clown was to offer
himself for hire as simply a clown (undistinguishable
from any other clown) and not related to the Shrine in
anyway, then a different picture presents itself. For what
it's worth, I'm unaware of any of us clowns in the El Jebel
Shrine who avails himself for hire to private functions.
I know one lady in the Denver area that does pro-
fessional clowning for hire, for example, to kids birthday
parties and similar events. She told us in a Clown School
class that other clowns are in the Denver area, and they do
clown work to supplement their income, as well. I was
very pleasantly surprised to encounter at one occasion a
lady who enjoyed doing "corporate gigs"! The "rate for
hire" for these professional clowns is about $200 per
hour; $300 per hour is near the top of the pay scale; $300
can be easily called for at a performance for a corporate
event. Additionally, the time limit for kid parties ranges
from one to two hours; it can be a solid two hours for an
evening of wonderful corporate enjoyment. That's right,
they are not cheap! (Contact me through the Shrine
should you have a need for a professional clown!)
My thoughts for this Red Fez article would be
incomplete if I didn't make a plea to you fun-lovin'
Shriners to become a clown!
El Jebel Computer Club
By Jim & Judy Taylor
The February 12th meeting was started with lunch at
Fresh Fish. Following lunch, the group convened at El
Jebel on the second floor for the meeting with 8 present.
President Elect Ed Hamm opened the meeting at 1:00 and
followed the normal agenda.
Ed & the Taylors did the set-up and took photos with
Optars of the new Divan prior to the January 14th Stated
Meeting and Installation ceremony. Ed & Judy also took
Valentine pictures of couples at the Valentine Family
Night meeting. Unfortunately we ran out of Photo Ma-
genta ink. It has been purchased and the rest of the pic-
tures have been printed and many have been distributed.
Four more cartridges need to be replaced to have a com-
plete extra set.
Sam & Mary Wittner were voted in as new members.
Ken Behrens will travel to his home Lodge in Wyoming
to receive his 50 Year pin. The March meeting will be on
March 5th, rather than March 12th, because everyone
should be working at “IHOP Free Pancake Day”.
The next meeting will be lunch at Wendy’s at 11:30.
There is “Troubleshooting” between 12:15 and 1:00 by
appointment, and the meeting & program will start at
1:00. The next 3 programs are:
March 5 – Home Security Systems (Do It yourself)
April 9 – Mobile Applications & Services
May 14 – Windows 10 Upgrade
Jim gave a report on the happenings at El Jebel. Di-
van Rep was unavailable.
For the Program, Ed discussed use of some computer
applications that some might not be aware: Amazon,
Google Maps and “OTG” (e.g., On the Go) – a new type
of cable.
All Shriners are invited to join our club; dues are
$12.00 per year. Wives, guests, and curious people are
always welcome.

NORTHEAST Colorado
Shrine Club
by Jerry Wardrip, Secretary
Here we go again with this early Morning gathering.
One advantage to this early morning stuff, we are usually
treated to a gorgeous sunrise and this morning is no dif-
ferent. A few clouds have gathered off to the east and as
the sun comes up we are getting a great relaxing highlight
to start our day.
Our President Noble Cecil Souders called the meeting
to order and offered the prayer followed by the pledge.
The minutes of our last gathering were reviewed and ap-
proved as printed. Noble Jerry Wardrip gave the treas-
ures report as our brother Noble Earl Craddock is still
recovering from some surgery; the report was accepted as
reported. Noble Jerry Wardrip brought up the fact that we
are working on getting our permits for this year’s fire-
works sales.
We still have things going on in the York Rite and de-
gree work in Blue Lodge. We will be doing the Order of
Malta in Commandry and we have brothers working on
proficiency on first and second degrees. Our Blue Lodge
and York Rite bodies are keeping busy which is good. It
keeps us learning.
We have done a few interviews for this year’s Masonic
Scholarship with a couple more scheduled. We are also
putting together the final plans for the Academic awards
for the 7th and 11th graders.
As the sun was now up above the horizon and the day
was looking brighter, and we seem to have covered all our
necessary business it was now time to move on to the rest
of our day. The President Cecil Souders closed the meet-
ing at about 7:10 AM with peace and harmony prevailing.
You know that you all have a standing invitation to
come out and meet with us the second Monday of each
month here at the Overland Trail Café at the Atwood in-
terchange at 6:00 A.M. That is the Sinclair Station at Exit
115 off I-76. Good Food and Great Fellowship.

ner meeting @ Malone’s Clubhouse Grill “inning” in Jan-
uary was hosted by the Dattilo’s. Ron Williamson, Divan
Rep, installed the RV Roamers officers for 2019 (see pic-
ture). Also, the Potentate’s pins were handed out to those
who were there (20 of us!)
On February 17th Roamers met at Fresh Fish
Company for a WONDERFUL buffet and meeting. If
you’ve never been to their Sunday buffet try it, you’ll like
it---and of course try our RV Roamers, which you will
like as well! Twenty-three members and guests, including
Ill. Sir Bobby Marner and his Lady Lisa, showed up for
this February “inning”, hosted by the Ashleys and Potters.
Of note: Richard Talkington, Treasurer, sug-
gested the Roamers donate some of the treasury money to
go to the Hospitals for Children. It was unanimously vot-
ed on sending $1000 to the Salt Lake Shriners’ Hospital
for Children.
President Jim went through the upcoming events
to September. Next meeting on March 17th will be an
“inning” at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Westminster.
Come join us if you can.
And again: RV Roamers members or guests do
not have to have an RV; we have lots of friends who just
join us for the “innings” 8 times a year, and even others
who rent an RV or else a cabin for “outings”. Come have
fun with us!

The
Sandblasters
By Claude Akridge
The Sandblasters last meeting was held on January
30th at the Golden Corral located at W. Hampden Ave. @ S.
Santa Fe Drive. The meeting was opened by our President,
Carl Gaumer with the pledge to the Flag and Prayer led by
Jack Patten PP. Carl reported that the Arizona trip was ready
to go and there were 17 members and guests signed up for the
golf trip. By the time this article is printed they will be back
home, hopefully with a safe trip and good golf playing weath-
er. There will be NO regular Sandblaster meeting in February
due to the AZ trip, the next regular meeting will be Wednes-
day March 27th.
Jim Teagarden gave an up-date on the 2019 golf sea-
son and asked the members to suggest any courses they want-
ed to play, and he was going to schedule them on Thursdays
because Thursdays best suited the members and also usually
could get better starting times.
The green books (25) have been ordered and will be
distributed as soon as they are printed. The 2019 roster is at
the printers and will be ready by the March meeting. The I-
Hop pancake event is back to El Jebel this year which will be
held on March 12th so Sandblasters if you can help at any of
the locations that day, please call the Shrine Office and find
the location close to you. We need to support this event.
The Sandblasters make a special welcome to Noble’s
Matthew Madrid and Gary Deulley for visiting our January
meeting. Thank you for coming and hope you become mem-
bers soon. We are sure you will enjoy the Club.
Not much to say about golf this time of year with
all the cold weather we have had, but spring is almost here and
remember you are always welcome to our meetings.
Caring Ladies
By Jeanne Thompson
The Caring Ladies of El Jebel began the new year with
Installation of Officers. Past President Darlene Tietz hon-
ored the officers by administering the oath of office to
President Carolyne Irwin, Secretary Jeanne Thompson
and Treasurer Kay Bell. Since the January luncheon was
a social only, the installation was held during the Febru-
ary meeting.
As usual, Miss Kitty made her rounds, collecting dona-
tions for the Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund. Her
monthly travels result in a donation about once a year and
the ladies are proud to be able to support the Shrine in this
manner.
We are the widows of Shriners and Masons, and invite
any other widows to join us in camaraderie, laughter and -
as is true for most Masonic meetings - good food. If you
are a widow, you are warmly invited to join us on the sec-
ond Wednesday of every month, 11:30 at the Chalet Res-
taurant, 7340 W. 38th Ave., Wheat Ridge. Here we find
friends, joy and support as we enjoy good food offered at
a modest price, new and old friendships, combined with
news from the Shrine and each other. Please call Kay
Bell at 303-430-9001 if you can join us. If you need a
ride, let her know and we will find someone who lives
near you to bring you. And if you decide at the last mi-
nute that you would like to join us, come on down! It's
easy to pull up another chair at the table!

We had our Installation of Officers Party Saturday Feb-
ruary 9th at Grand Vista Hotel in beautiful suburban
Grand Junction, Colorado. We were blessed with Illustri-
ous Sir Bobby Marner, his Divan and members of El Jeb-
el Temple of Denver. Was good to renew old friendships
and meet new friends from the Denver area. Our Poten-
tate and his Divan did a wonderful job of greeting us and
installing our officers for 2019. He had a special treat for
us when he brought the El Jebel Pipe Band. These guys
ROCK! Illustrious Sir Bobby had great encouragement
and plans for us and El Jebel for 2019.
He installed all our officers for 2019 and I know they
will be a good lineup. We are under good leadership with
Noble Gary Weiszbrod at the helm. (Hey try spelling
Weiszbrod while using spell check. Drives it crazy.)
This year we also had our Shriner of the Year of Western
Colorado presented on this night. It went to a very de-
serving Noble. Jerald Conyers, who has been very active
with the Shrine, Blue Lodge, York Rite Order, Scottish
Rite, Rainbow Girls and DeMolay for years. He has spon-
sored many children to our hospitals and made many trips
to Salt Lake hospital. Being there for some of their func-
tions and especially carrying toys for the kids in time for
Christmas. Jerald was also in charge of our Installation
Party again this year and did a great job as usual. Things
like this take hours and hours of planning and working
with all involved.
I'd like to thank El Jebel Chaplain Jim Oliver for his
prayers for us and his presentations of thoughts and en-
couragement.
Our Ceremonial team did a great job installing 2 new
Nobles. Doug Finley came over the hill with the Denver
folks and Scott Krebs came in from Montrose. Welcome
aboard Nobles. Scott is chomping at the bit to join the
WCSC Clown unit. He is in for the time of his life.
Western Colorado Board of Directors meeting was
called to order (with new officers in place) at 11:45am by
Pres. Gary Weiszbrod. Invocation by our Chaplin Roger
Phillips and Pledge of Allegiance by Jim
Ditmore. Minutes were approved as mailed.
Old Business: We thanked Illustrious Sir Bobby Marner
and his crew for coming and helping with our Installation
of Officers. We have a contract with Jordan Productions
for our 2019 circus and with a couple of adjustments we
will have that signed and set to go.
He wants to do one show in Montrose Thursday night
May 30th 7pm, one show at 7pm in Delta May 31st. and
Sat. June 1st a show at 3pm and one at 7pm.
(Continued on pages 14& 16)

(continued from page 13)
Gary thanked us for putting our trust in him for 2019 and
he has a good line up of chairmen for things that need to
be done. He is working on a list of jobs for each of the 2
vice presidents so they know what is expected of them
this year.
1st VP Chris Geisler our Circus Chairman had family
emergency and is out of town.
2nd VP Jim Ditmore our PR man is going to be in charge
of advertising and promotion of the Shrine.
We sent 4 kids to Shriner Hospitals this month.
Jim Ditmore had our parade line up and I am attaching a
copy of that here.
Our President wants to have some Shriner get togethers
this year and is starting out with a Fat-Paddy's Party
March 9th at the Blue Moon in Grand Junction 1pm to
3:30pm with special prices for us and a cash bar. Come
on out and have some fun. Gary wants to have a couple of
pot luck picnics this summer and says if anyone has an
idea for something fun to do, let him know and we can
discuss it. Maybe some ATV trips or golf for those who
do that.
We are all geared up for IHOP pancake day March
12th. See y'all there. Because of the date we have to
change our meeting for March to the 3rd Tuesday, the
19th at 11:45am.
WCSC Corvettes: They are planning to do a lot of pa-
rading this year. Glad to see that as this gives me targets
to aim for.
WCSC Tri-County by Steve Thomas:
All our new officers were duly installed by Illustrious Sir
Bobby Marner February 9th at the Installation Party in
Grand Junction, Colorado. We got to meet and greet new
and old friends and had a great time. I feel we are under
good leadership and will have a great 2019.
Well I missed the 50/50 cash prize again because Jim
Ditmore laid claim to that and he is using it to build a bar-
rier around his dog house as Gus is getting kinda out of
hand and tries to attack anyone and everyone who won't
pet him when they visit. My lady Jacki won the door
prize which was a beautiful indoor desert. We had a great
time at RJ's Steakhouse until someone ran into Brother
Gary Weiszbrod's Honda Ridgeline (Which was legally
parked and not making any advances on anyone.)
We meet in Feb. and March at CB Tavern in downtown
Delta, Colorado. We are doing this in support of one of
our Nobles who has bought in on this adventure. (I take
tips for the free advertisement Fred). The meeting will be
at 1pm Feb. 23rd and March 23rd.
WCSC Clown report by (guess who) Steve Thomas:
Well, here we go with a new leadership for 2019 after
being installed as such by our Illustrious leader Bobby
Marner in the ballroom of Grand Vista Hotel in Grand
Junction, Colorado Feb. 9th. Was great to see him and all
his crew come over the hill for that special event.
(Especially that he was so gracious as to bring that great
El Jebel Pipe Band with him. What a group they are. )
We have been asked to entertain kids at a kindergar-
ten function in Montrose at a date the end of April. More
on that ia I get the Info.

Another new year of fun and parading is upon us. The
installed officers for 2019 are: Greg Rindone – Pres. John
Kesig – Vice Pres and Hos Varner – Secy/Treas.. Our
membership is up to 22 members with three new ones
this year: Ron Cosens, Clint Dexter and Paul Whannel.
Only seven members do not parade.
We wish a special get well and speedy recovery to Bob
Patten.
The first parade of the season is St. Patrick's Day in
Denver on March 16. This year has six Callout parades
which are: St Patrick's on 3/6, Commerce City on 5/7,
Buffalo Bills on 7/27, Wheatridge on 8/10, Arvada on
9/7 and Veterans Day in Denver on 11/9. The three
official parades are: Salida on 6/15, Brush on 7/4 and
Sioux City, Iowa on 8/24 (CSSA). The Sports also have
several social events planned for the year.
Our February meeting on the 13th at the Willis Case
Golf Course at 11:30 AM had 25 persons attending:
Clarks, Cosens, Dexters, Eckleys, Kesigs, Mayers, Paust-
ians, Plaisted, Rendons, Rindone, Whannels, Williams,
Wingates and Kathy Myers. A special thanks to Ron Co-
sens and Carl Gaumer for making our new rosters. What
a good way to become familiar with our members.
If you have a convertible and would like to join, social-
ize and parade with a fun group, we meet on the Wednes-
day of the second full week of the month. We will meet
at the parades during the summer months.

OPTARS
By J & J Taylor
On February 5th the Optars met at “Citron”, a
Greek restaurant located on Yosemite near Hampden.
We had planned to have our usual dinner at Village Inn,
but unbeknownst to all of us, it was closed! So, we had a
good meal---might go there again.
Then we ambled down the road to the Shrine to
have our meeting and program. President Ron opened
the meeting with 7 enthusiasts present (one couple had to
leave after the previous dinner). The minutes were ap-
proved, but not read---Jim T. suggested they read the Red
Fez! Under Old Business, Ron D. stated that our Optara-
ma this year will be events the Optars have done. Ed H.
will assemble this.
Two new members voted in are Sam and Mary
Wittner. Several ideas were presented for the club to
consider: Optars could print passport photos for a
charge; personal 2-part cards with prospects’ info can be
printed; a Red Fez ad about a special Saturday program
for a charge; and for the Feb. 11th Monday night meeting
we would print pictures of “Sweethearts” (done---see
below).
Ed Hamm did the “shooting” of the Sweetheart
Valentine Family Night (with others helping, of course).
Unfortunately, upon changing ink cartridges for the print-
er it was discovered the cartridges we had stored were
empty. So, some pictures were delayed a week or so,
until they got printed. Take a look at the enclosed picture
and let us know how we can get these last ones to them!
To finish off the meeting, Ron W. gave the Di-
van report for our appointed Divan Rep Ron D. We were
reminded “WE ARE ALL ON THE MEMBERSHIP
COMMITTEE!”
The next meeting will on March 5th, where we
will eat dinner at New York Deli, on Hampden just east
of Monaco and then go to the Shrine for our meeting.
We’re going to do a photoshoot of a pet model,
“George”, the Markell’s 13-year-old doggy! He’s “never
modeled before” (so his agent may not charge too much),
but according to Cathe, “He’s pretty calm” (unlike the
last doggy model we had!)
Come join us for the fun!

Pipe Band
By Kent Burns
Is it spring yet? February sure was long!
In February, the Band made our
second sojourn into the mountains – all the way to Grand
Junction to answer our Potentate’s request to play for the
installation and banquet of the Western Slope Shrine
Club. Had a great time, and once again, we had clear
roads. We did, however, learn that west-bound I-70 can
be every bit the parking lot as those found out at DIA. It
took us an hour to go from Morrison to Idaho Springs,
and another hour to get to the tunnel. The headaches
were not limited to slow progress – the slow traffic with
all that exhaust lead to a real Excedrin headache.
March is that fun month we in the piping commu-
nity either love or dread. St. Patrick’s Day brings out the
best and worst in some people. Many has been the time
when those who have possibly imbibed a wee bit too
much get a little frisky with their hands and suggestive
with their mouths. We find it interesting that if we guys
made the suggestive remarks or provocative moves some
girls do at this time of year, they would be piping sunlight
to us for months. You get used to it after a while, but it is
still aggravating. No more so than the “my next-door
neighbor’s barber’s veterinarian’s receptionist’s grocery-
checker’s boyfriend’s niece’s babysitter” went to Scot-
land once. And that is not all that far-fetched scenario,
especially at the Highland Games.
However, such could be a nod of appreciation (or
envy) that we have worked so hard to prefect our craft.
There are some in town who tout the El Jebel Shrine Pipe
Band as (one of) the best band(s) in Colorado. We defi-
nitely have improved these last few years and have a ra-
ther large repertoire to show how hard these pipers have
worked to learn tunes. For the novice, the musical pieces
pipe bands play are called “tunes,” not “songs.” That is a
pet peeve of many pipers – the explanation given is
“songs” have words, “tunes” do not. That is not strictly
correct – many (especially “traditional”) tunes were an-
cient chants or songs that were “arranged” for pipes. An-
other tidbit for the novice is pipes have only nine notes
with no provision for sharps or flats. With such a limited
range, it is oft times difficult to completely transpose a
song/tune for bagpipes. That is why our Military Set
does not include the Air Force song – too many
“accidentals” (sharps/flats) as well as spanning more than
the one octave available on the pipes. (More such info
next month.)
Should there be any out there who would like to
join for all this hard work and fun, the Band meets every
Thursday evening at the Shrine at 1900 (or 7:00pm for
the uninitiated). Come on down!
