Family Connect • Nov/Dec 2016 www.thejunctionworks.org

Dear parents, carers & supporters,

Yet another year has flown by - and as we enter the final months of 2016, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for helping us to achieve great things this year.

Recently we announced that The Junction Works has commenced the design phase of our new Living Skills & Respite House, with construction forecasted to start at the end of next year - once we have confirmed zoning and council approval (see page 6).

We are on track to achieving this new facility thanks to the incredible generosity of our client families, community partners and corporate supporters, who have inspired fundraising initiatives and events in an effort to see the establishment of our Living Skills & Respite House.

From achieving incredible success through our major 2016 fundraisers - our Junk Free June Campaign and Charity Golf Day - to our smaller fashion parade event and Shop til You Drop fundraiser (courtesy of Theona Gerondis), we have been able to move forward our plans for development and begin to realise this goal much sooner than expected. We owe it all to our families and our community partners - including Liverpool City Council and Mounties Group (who have sponsored our Junction All Stars concerts), as well as Interlink Roads for supporting the Works Catering Crew projects and our

newly-commenced polytunnel (see page 7), amongst many other organisations. To all of our families and community, I thank you for realising our potential for growth into the future - growth of our quality services, our team and our resources to support those who are most in need.

We are well aware that it has been an equally challenging year for many individuals, families, carers and organisations with the NDIS rollout in 2016. The NDIS is now a reality for many of our families, who we know have had to make complex decisions, often with little information through the NDIS.

To the best of our ability, The Junction Works will continue to communicate accurate information to our families about new processes or other changes under the Scheme.

Though a rigorous process, the outcomes of the NDIS have proven positive for our families. This transition will become smoother over time, and may change into the future.

If you are currently applying for NDIS funding and are confronted with an issue, please know that you are able to go back and appeal the outcome - and The Junction Works will support you to do so.

Our priority is to be a voice for our families through our Family Connect Workers, who are currently working together with families to get the best outcomes possible for their son or daughter with a disability under the NDIS.

NDIS UPDATE

Family Connect • Nov/Dec 2016 www.thejunctionworks.org

Pure joy - two words to describe our recent SPARK Creative Arts Festival for adults with a disability, which took place over the 25th - 28th October.

This year over 350 excited participants from 13 different disability support organisations attended SPARK, having arrived keen to discover new skills in an uplifting, festive environment - and leaving with unforgettable memories, big smiles and personal goals achieved. SPARK 2016 was an equally fulfilling experience for all staff who attended.

The Junction Works were pleased to have The Hon. John Ajaka, Minister for Disability NSW, attend this year’s SPARK Festival and award the young people in our Youth Clicks Program with certificates of achievement.

The 12 student volunteers from Holsworthy High School who received certificates are currently taking up leadership opportunities through the Youth Clicks program, gaining confidence and being inspired by new experiences along the way. Many of the young people that apply for Youth Clicks are keen to make connections that will pave their way for a future career in a disability support role.

We hope that SPARK 2016 provided all families and carers with an opportunity for some much-deserved respite.

NDIS UPDATE 2016 GOLF DAY SUCCESS

CLARENDON TAKE HOME THE 2016 GOLF DAY CUP

Between 115 individuals, 25 teams, perfect weather and an entertaining game of golf at Macquarie Links, we were thrilled to announce the 2016 Clarendon Challenge cup as The Junction Works’ most successful Charity Golf Day yet!

Congratulations to The Junction Works’ sixth-time Gold Sponsor, Clarendon Homes, for winning the title of their own cup in 2016, which was presented to CEO Peter Campbell during Friday’s Golf Lunch.

An astounding $80,000 was generated by the Golf Day for the development of our Living Skills & Respite House, on account of registrations, donations, sponsorships, an attractive auction and with raffle tickets running out the door.

We would like to thank the incredibly generous community and corporate partners of The Junction Works, who supported the 2016 Golf Day both during and in the lead-up to the event.

“We anticipated that raising the funds for the new facility would be a long process... what we weren’t expecting was the overwhelming response and generosity of our supporters. It amazes me how many local and non-local corporates have jumped on board to help us to realise our goal,” said CEO Chris Campbell.

The success of the 2016 Golf Day would not have been possible without the support of The Junction Works’ growing corporate sponsors; our Gold Sponsor Clarendon

Homes; Silver Sponsors, Meridian IT, Fowler Homes, Deep Blue Plumbing, Wattle Grove Air, Xceed Electrical and HLB Man Judd; as well as Bronze Sponsors McGrath Subaru, Simple Interiors, NTS, Office Products Depot, Lindsay Bennelong Developments and CIB Accountants & Advisers.

The Junction Works would also like to acknowledge community partners Dr and Mrs Anand, the Way Family, the Pangallo Family and Theona Gerondis, who have been an integral part of The Junction Works’ fundraising efforts and mission of Creating new possibilities in people’s lives.

Combined with previous fundraising efforts, the funds generated by the 2016 Golf Day will make it possible for the construction of the new facility to commence much sooner than imagined – in late 2017 – with planning for the design process already underway.

NDIS UPDATE LIVING SKILLS & RESPITE HOUSE: A new space to support our community

“We know that the Living Skills and Respite House will present enormous potential to assist many local communities.” -Chris Campbell CEO

Family Connect • Nov/Dec 2016 www.thejunctionworks.org

Following on from the success of our recent fundraising campaigns and events, we are thrilled to announce developments in the plans for our new Living Skills & Respite House.

Establishment of this new site to support young adults with a disability and their families was a distant dream for The Junction Works as little as two years ago.

Through the generosity of our families, supporters and corporate sponsors, the construction of the new facility is planned to occur sooner than initially expected.

“This is great news for the people we support and their parents and carers,” said Chris Campbell.

Land for the Living Skills & Respite House is being generously provided by local philanthropists Dr Sushil and Mrs Alka Anand, in the heart of the South West Sydney Growth Centre. This development has enabled The Junction Works to commence the design phase of the project.

“Planned respite and emergency accommodation for people with a disability and their families is currently a service deficit in South West Sydney,” said Chris.“The facility will support the needs, aspirations and wellbeing of young men and women with a disability in South West Sydney.”

The facility will be built over a single level using Livable Housing Design Principles,

Platinum Design Accessbility, meaning the space will be easy to nagivate and responsive to the changing needs of occupants.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the support of individuals, families and corporations who, through donations sponsorships and word-of-mouth, are ensuring that this much-needed facility will be established.

Further funds will be required to assist with the general and specialist fitout and landscaping of the facility.

You can be a part of the establishment of the Living Skills & Respite House by making a tax-deductible donation to The Junction Works by calling 8777 0500, or by visiting our website: www.thejunctionworks.org/supportus/donate

If you would like to find out more about the development of the Living Skills & Respite House, please contact CEO Chris Campbell on 8777 0500.

TJW NEWS

COWPASTURES COMMUNITY GARDEN POLYTUNNELMade possible by a grant from Interlink Roads, we are excited to be installing a 30m greenhouse polytunnel structure for the Cowpastures Community Garden at the Austral Service Centre.

Once completed, the polytunnel will enable a reliable supply of fruit and vegetable crop to be used for the Works Teaching Kitchen, as well as garden programs. The polytunnel is due for completion before Christmas.

CROSSROADS CHARITY CAR SHOWCrossroads Homemakers was alive with the roar of engines and the smell of oil on October 23, as part of its Charity Car Show! The Junction Works was the recipient of the funds raised on the day, and also raised funds through a sausage sizzle and food stall.

Young people from our Youth Clicks volunteered their Sunday to assist, manning the temporary tattoo stand and selling fairy floss and snow cones. Funds raised have been allocated to our Living Skills and Respite House - thank you to all who popped in to say hello and grab some goodies!

TJW YOUTH CLICKSDo you have a son or daughter in high school looking for greater opportunities to build their confidence, make connections in the community or to gain experience for a future career?
