Happy 2nd Anniversary to us! C O N T E N T S

How exciting – Families Pennines was launched 2 years ago in March 2011. In that time we have grown up a bit – with lots more pages and 16000 magazines read by 30000 lovely people (that’s you!) So we have pulled a party popper, patted ourselves on the back and now to business!

So what treats have we in store this issue? How about a chance to win one of five DVDs from the fab people at babyballet HQ? This award winning team have just launched their first DVD and we have a competition on page 3. Take a look at our Clubs and Classes section on page 12 to get the lowdown and a review by a loyal Families Pennines reader AND news of a brand new venue for Caspers Freestyle dance classes in Brighouse.

With schools admissions on many minds, this issue looks at what to think about if your little one starts school in September so take a look at pages 6 to 9 for our Education Matters section. And what about the Easter Bunny – where will he be bouncing up this March and April? We have a selection of things to do and see in our Easter

Feature on pages 10 to 11 and then go to our What’s On section pages 14-16 for even more!!

And finally – the brilliant RSPB at Old Moor have a fantastic free offer for Families Pennines readers– so pull on your wellies and see page 11 for a voucher or print off by visiting: www.familiespennines.co.uk/vouchers.

A Happy Mother’s Day to all the fellow mums out there and enjoy the Easter break!

AppealsFor 5 to 7 year-olds, the class size is limited to 30. Your application can be turned down if all the classes already have 30 children in them but you can still appeal if your child would have been offered a place. Your appeal could be successful if the admission arrangements haven’t been properly followed, the admissions criteria aren’t legal according to the School Admissions Code or the decision to refuse your child a

place wasn’t reasonable. The Coram Children’s Legal Centre is able to help and advise in the case of an appeal for a local authority school place whilst for a Maintained school place you must contact the Local Government Ombudsman and for Free schools and academies, contact the Education Funding Agency.

After the appealFor parents who have been successful, there will be celebration all round if the appeal hearing finds in your favour, but what if it doesn’t?

Those who can afford it might opt for private education and your local independent schools are able to help you with information about late

applications and there may be help with school fees too. Sue Oliver, Hipperholme Grammar School’s Marketing and Admissions Officer, says, ‘Even though many independent schools will have already held their

open days, and allocated places in their reception classes, or equivalent, by this time, there may still be opportunities to come and have a look around and put in a late application. The independent sector has flexibility to offer places at a later stage (providing there is capacity) or for a child to be put on a waiting list. With regard to fees the government offers help towards fees up to the child’s fifth birthday and then there may be bursaries for younger children with the opportunity

Local authority allocation. In the Families Pennines area all local authority primary school places are allocated on the same day - 16th April 2013. On that day you’ll be sent a letter with the decision about your child’s school or an email if you applied online. Not all parents are happy with the allocated place and if necessary you can appeal against the decision to the admission authority for each school that does not offer a place - the letter will tell you how to do this. If you’re appealing several rejections, make separate appeals. Do remember that most children go to the school of their choice and the number of appeals are

relatively low in our area.

Your child starting school in 2013? Families Pennines looks at what you need to know when you are waiting to hear which school your child has been allocated.

Many children in our area will start school for the first time in september 2013 if they were born between september 2008 and august 2009.

Admissions criteria are different for each school, depending on whether it is local authority, independent, selective, maintained or academy. For example, schools may give priority to children who have a brother or sister at the school already, who live close to the school, from a particular religion (for faith schools), who do well in an entrance exam (for selective schools eg grammar schools or stage schools), who went to a particular primary school (a ‘feeder school’) or in care or being looked after (all schools must have this as a top priority). Even if your child’s current primary or nursery school is linked to the school you want them to go to next, you won’t be considered for a place unless you have applied. Private schools have their own admissions procedures and therefore parents need to have applied direct to the school if you want to send your child to an independent school.

Moving On Upfor scholarships as they move up to senior school.’

If this is not an option, you should stay focused. If the local authority or school holds a waiting list make sure you keep your child’s name on the list and check at regular intervals to see what place they are at (it can go up or down).

If your appeal is not successful or you decide not to appeal at all then try not to be too negative about the school your child will actually attend as you really will want your child to start their new school in a positive frame of mind.

Remember most children go to the school of their choice and there are many cases where parents have failed to win a preferred place whose children settle happily in another school, make friends and succeed academically - and nothing is better than that!

Tip 1: Practise:People practise content but they don’t practise test techniques. The key criteria of tests are that they are unpredictable and timed. The work done in class and the homework based on class work is always predictable and rarely timed. Effective practise for a test will come from attempting unpredictable work in a timed scenario. At home, unpredictable questions might come from a different text book and past or practise exams. Then you need to self-enforce a time limit during your practise. For SATs practise at home, we have past tests available to work through. Teachers do some of these in class with students, but the more they practise the more prepared (i.e. less stressed) they will feel.

Tip 2: Skip questionsThere is no rule to say all questions must be completed

in a test, or at all. If you can’t answer it immediately,

skip it and come back later. I go through every test from

beginning to end no less than three times - but up to five.

The first time I only do the extremely basic questions,

the next time I do the next easiest, and so on. On the

final sweep I am checking my work. You never want to

run out of time with easy questions left unanswered or

rushed.

Compulsory SATs in maths & English for Year 6 students will happen in May 2013. Although students know they will do much better if they don’t stress about it, they stress! We often hear stories of students who understand the work, but struggle in the tests because of stress on the day. Stress in tests is usually the result of insufficient or misguided preparation but preparation for a test is more than just understanding the content, it is also preparing for the test situation.

How do you prepare your Year 6 child for sats? We asked steve and Judith uttley of number Works ‘n’ Words, Huddersfield, for some top tips.

Key Stage 2 SATs will be here sooner than you think !

Tip 3: Read ALL of the questionMany students get caught by not reading the question in full. Force yourself to read everything by underlining key words. If you don’t underline, you will miss something!

NumberWorks’nWords Huddersfield provides tuition to help your child gain the additional skills required to perform well in the new SATs test and achieve their full potential. Our individualised learning programmes cover all elements of the new English SATs test. call us now on 01484 487911 for a FrEE assessment & introductory lesson.

Be informed...

Marsden Junior School has launched an after school and holiday garden club for pupils, their families and the community with funding from the National Lottery’s Awards for All. ‘Growing Laboratories’ will run in partnership with Marsden based not for profit organisation GROW. The Friends of Marsden Junior School raised money to buy vegetable and flower seeds plus orchard trees and money for a polytunnel was donated by the Marsden community organization, Cuckoo’s Nest.

The sessions will run during 2013 and will give all those taking part the opportunity to learn how to grow tasty fruit and vegetables as well as how to encourage hedgehogs, songbirds and other wildlife into their gardens.

Helen Hoare, deputy head says, ‘Over the past year GROW has been working hard with the school’s children and staff to get their garden into a manageable condition’.

‘The money from Awards for All,’ says Ama Chaney of GROW, ‘will allow us to help create the next generation of food growers, gardeners and conservationists.’

Her colleague, Zana Wood, added, ‘GROW can help other schools in West Yorkshire develop and get more fun out of their gardens and play areas.’

Contact Ama Chaney of GROW on 01484 846260 or 07881 988158 or log on to www.growtoschool.co.uk or email [email protected] .

Growing success at Marsden Junior School

Just a look at the Facebook page of this Pennines school – famous for its high profile former pupils like actor Sarah Lancashire, presenter John Stapleton and top scientist Professor Brian Cox – and you can see just what a busy bunch of children there are at OHGS. For the next few months, that certainly remains the case.

Focussing on the younger end of the school not only do they have trips to Eureka and Manchester Airport lined up, but they are also enjoying lots of fun over a few days with Sing Up Day on 14 March, the very next day a celebration of Red Nose Day AND National Book Day with children and staff dressing up as

Hipperholme Grammar School has been teaching the children of Calderdale, Kirklees, Bradford and beyond since 1648. Future plans include a new performing arts block and refurbished common room area for its thriving sixth form. So what about right now?

Hipperholme Grammar School has some dates for your diary. The Junior and Senior schools both have open events coming up with an open evening for the Seniors on 1 March and an open morning on 9 March for the Juniors.

Then with environmental week and a Young Musician competition the month ends with the ever-popular Gym and Dance Spectacular on 25th and 26th March to which local schools will be invited to the matinee and tickets are expected to sell out early.

Heathfield School is the junior school for Rishworth School, and is situated in its own private grounds in the beautiful wooded Ryburn Valley. With the nursery school and the senior school across the road it is possible for pupils to go through from 3 to 18. If you would like to see the

book character – with an added red nose - plus you are invited on 16 March to visit the Nursery and Kindergarten to have a look around and to see what the Easter Bunny might have hidden near the woodland! Take part between 10.30 and 11.30am and contact the school for more information.

And if that is not enough the whole school are already organising Party in the Park 3 – a massive family event – so save the date which is Saturday 22 June.

The school is also looking forward to linking up with old boys and girls plus local businesses. The alumni (who have included pupils as diverse as Sir Robert Peel – Prime Minister under Queen Victoria and creator of the British police force to Danny and Richard McNamara of Embrace) are invited to a reunion on 28 June. Meanwhile HGS is sponsoring the larger business of the year award in the Brighouse Echo Business Awards next month.

Alongside this the School has a long history in providing bursaries for children from less well-off families and in September will introduce its first fully funded place at the School as part of its Scholarship scheme. So a long history points to a strong future!

transition should become easier.

l Start by leaving your child with a trusted and well known family member/ friend for an hour.

l Repeat this several times.

l Start to extend the period of time. Soon your child will feel secure that you will always return.

l Change the venue, maybe at a play gym or toddler group- make it fun and the child will begin to see that even strange environments can be exciting to explore.

l Continue this plan over several months.

Of course, this will not stop all anxieties, but will give your child confidence that he or she will be ok when you are not there and that you will always come back.

If you need any help with any of the issues raised, contact your Health Visitor or school.

Recent research shows that more children than ever are starting school unprepared for the experience - some may never have been away from their parents, may be reliant on a dummy or not toilet trained. It seems that these issues in particular can have a negative impact.

It is normal for all children to feel anxious when they are leaving a parent to go to school for the first time, but for most this will be transient and disappear once they have met the teacher and spent some time in the classroom. However, some children, often the ones who have spent little or no time away from parents, can struggle to come to terms with this new situation causing great distress to both the child and parent.

Luckily this is a preventable situation and with some planning prior to starting school, the

You can use a ‘blown’ or hard-boiled egg and many craft or toy shops sell polystyrene eggs which are a great alternative.

Free Paint - let your child paint whatever they like

using poster colours or acrylics if you have them. Toothpicks or cotton buds are great for making small dots & patterns.

Collage Tissue Paper Chicks - glue small pieces

of tissue paper all over the egg in your chosen colour, do a couple of layers at least. Add googly eyes, a couple of feathers for wings and a triangle of card or foam to make a beak. Once dry, these are less fragile too. (Same method can be used to create other creatures, Easter bunnies, cute monsters, favourite characters etc.)

Mess Free Stickers – cover the egg using stickers,

dots, stars, free ones that come with magazines etc, whatever you have to hand.

Recycle Sock Animal – cut the toe end from a

small sock to create a ‘cosy’ cover for your egg, add features and clothes using cut felt or fabric scraps and googly eyes look fab with this too.

Sparkle-tastic – cover the egg in PVA glue, pour

some glitter into a small dish (takeaway trays are perfect) roll or dip carefully into the glitter, add sequins as well for an eggs-tra special touch!

Have fun!! Neela

Nestled in the heart of the Dearne Valley, is RSPB Old Moor nature reserve with 250 acres of nature to explore. Everyone is welcome at Old Moor - you don’t need to know your bumble bees from honey bees, or why a heron stands still for hours (the staff and volunteers can help you with that!) You will get a warm welcome and the freedom to play in the fresh air enjoying the best that nature can offer. The site is buggy friendly and little legs can run, walk or hop their way round the discovery zone, or go wild in the new playground.

There are pond dipping kits (and so the wellies!) and exciting activity back packs for hire

that contain all the fun things budding explorers need. During the school holidays there are paints, glue, paper and craft materials available to help you create pictures of what you’ve seen – or just the things you like! Over Easter there will be special events, stories and games. Take a look at What’s On for full list. All activities are suitable for supervised children of any age, all they need is a sense of fun and discovery, and when little explorers get hungry why not try the cafe with home cooked snacks and meals.

For details of events, directions, opening times and entry fees visit www.rspb.org.uk/oldmoor, e-mail [email protected] or call 01226 751593.

The Swimbabes course is primarily designed to use your baby’s natural affinity to water and, where appropriate, their early gag reflex to introduce them to water confidence and safety from an early age. Babies can join the Swimbabes programme from 4 weeks up to 18 months of age. All courses are based on your baby’s or child’s developmental needs - physically and psychologically. Groups are kept small to provide a calm environment and teaching is geared to individual needs. With 17 venues across Yorkshire, including three new pools this year, there will be a class near

they think. Our babyballet DVD reviewer was Dee Dee from Littleborough who says, ‘The babyballet DVD was very good. How childcare is changingJoanna Moorhead looks at how the recent Government announcement regarding supervision numbers will affect Families Pennines parents.

France, Denmark and Germany, three countries that are often cited as providing high-quality care for pre-school children.

But Labour’s shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg says he believes the plans would undermine the quality of the UK’s childcare. ‘I think this is one area where we’ve got something to teach other countries,’ he says. ‘If you look at France, there’s quite a big public debate about whether they’ve got this right.’

What about tax breaks?Childcare vouchers are one form of tax break for parents paying for childcare and it had been hoped that the scheme would be reformed and extended, but these hopes haven’t come to fruition and Elizabeth Truss said changes are in the pipeline.

Whilst we wait for another announcement, sources close to the government have said

working women with children aged under five could become entitled to claim a flat rate tax allowance of £2,000 a year to pay someone to look after their children, but any plan could take some time.

How to cut your childcare costs in the short termTo cut childcare costs right now there are a few ideas we’ve come up with at Families:

l Change your working hours: as a parent with a child under 16, you’re entitled to request flexible working hours from your employer, provided you’ve worked there for more than six months. You could ask to fit your work into fewer days that are longer – then your partner could collect your child or children from your carer on the days you’re working, lose one whole day where childcare is needed and you can cut

childcare bills.

l If you work part-time and use a nursery, check out whether the fees are lower on certain days of the week (they sometimes are) and see if you can switch the days you work.

l Team up with a friend who’s also working part-time and has a child of a similar age and work different days, so you look after her child with yours while she’s working, and vice versa. Check with your local authority if there is any need for formalising the arrangement.

l When you’re choosing a childminder, check whether she can access the free 15 hours’ childcare a week that all three and four-year-olds are entitled to – not all childminders can do this, and it can be worth up to £180 for 38 weeks of the year.

For more on childcare go to www.familiesonline.co.uk. Details correct at time of going to press.

Childcare in Britain costs more than almost anywhere else in the world, with parents of young children spending 27% of their income on the costs of a nanny, a childminder or a nursery. For many couples, especially those with two or more children, it doesn’t make financial sense for them both to be at work.

How can the cost of childcare be reduced without compromising on quality? From government ministers to childcare providers, that is the question many are grappling with at the moment.

What the government is sayingIn late January the government announced a new plan in a move it says will cut costs for parents and raise pre-school standards.

Early years minister Elizabeth Truss is proposing that:

l Childminders, will be allowed to look after four children aged one to five, currently restricted to three, and two under ones instead of just one.

l Nurseries will be allowed to increase their staff to child ratio from the current 1:4 to 1:6 and for under-ones, the ratio will rise from 1:3 to 1:4.

l Qualifications would be raised for new nursery staff who will be required to have a GCSE grade C or above in English and Maths and a new graduate-level early years teaching qualification will be introduced.

Truss argues the current relatively tight ratios leads to higher costs for parents, and lower pay for staff. The changes, she believes, would lead to lower fees for parents and higher pay for staff, and improve the quality of childcare workers over time. England would still have higher staff to child ratios than those for childcarers in
