2017 GRAVITY ENDURO NATIONAL SERIES

2 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

Round One - Falls Creek

The National Gravity Enduro Series acts as the qualifying series for the Enduro World Series. See mention

in the article with Ben McIlroy.Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Falls Creek Resort Management are pleased to present Round One of the 2017 Gravity Enduro National Series. The series is Australia wide with Round Two being held at Stromlo Forest ACT in May. Round Three will be at Balingup WA in June; Round Four will go to Rockhampton in July and the final round will be held on Woodford Island, on the Clarence River in northern NSW in August. The popularity of mountain biking continues to grow. From the great efforts of some Mount Beauty locals in the 90’s - to hosting the Nationals in Feb 2000 - to the point where we have some of the best tracks in the country - both in Mount Beauty and in Falls Creek. The growth and the success means we can continue to host fabulous events.

Round One of the GE National Series will be staged this weekend, beginning with practice sessions from 11am Friday.During the course of the weekend, several of the trails will be closed to general riders although Blue Dirt will have shuttles running on Friday from 11am to 6pm and again on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Cost is $50 per day or $90 for 2 days. Go to www.bluedirt.com.au to book. On Sunday the trails will be closed to the general public, but will progressively open as the different sections of the event are completed. Pretty Valley Road will also have closures and be subject to delays should anyone be travelling back from the horse yards or Pretty Valley Pondage. Now this Gravity Enduro is a different sort of mountain bike racing to what we know as Downhill or Cross Country. The Gravity Enduro is both. The athletes will start with a warm up ride from Slalom Plaza, out the Bogong High Plains Road, up the Pretty Valley Road and then across to the Trig

Point on the Frying Pan Spur. The aim of the game is to ride each section no faster than the fastest time allowed, and no slower than the set slowest time. Then they do the competitive bit, before riding to the start of the next competitive bit without beating or exceeding the times permitted. At the time of going to print, the final course had not been set, but they look like taking in High Voltage and Wishing Well, then heading to Flowtown, completing that before heading to Thunderbolt and then to Generator and Vortex before finishing in Slalom Plaza. Sound like a pretty easy day!!The weekend’s program sort of goes like this. Saturday: 9am to 16:00 is compulsory practice. 10am to 18:30 is rider registration and Info Tent open. 17:00 to 17:30 is rider briefing. From 18:00 on there is a social evening at Last Hoot Restaurant and Bar in Slalom Plaza.Sunday: 8am to 9am Rider Briefing and Timing activation. 8:30am to 1430pm Trails Open for GE competition.1500 to 1630 Presentations. If you’re into biking and would like to enjoy some good action, be at Falls Creek this weekend. Further detail from 03 5758 1200. •

ALPINE QUESTNon-stop Endurance

A contingent of adventure seekers will descend on Falls Creek between 25th and 28th January for a non-

stop adventure race being held over the Australia Day long weekend. Teams of four will mountain bike, kayak and trek non-stop for up to 36 hours in the first Alpine Quest adventure race.

Course director Serge Kurov from ‘off-road’ event company Adventure Junkie told us that the race has attracted 30 teams with competitors arriving from across Australia as well as international destinations. “The area is perfect for adventures of all kinds. The course we have put together will be utterly spectacular, showing off the region’s best features but also exploring areas that are rarely visited.”

“We are really excited to be taking Australian adventure racing back to the mountains” said Serge. “We have previously raced in Falls Creek and love the diversity

of terrain that is on offer; but Alpine Quest is a very unique event. It won’t be like other races held in the area and will be a fully supported linear ‘Expedition’ style course enabling us to incorporate some local white-water kayaking and some spectacular and remote areas of the alpine environment over a 36 hour time period. We have also offered an option for the less experienced participants wanting to ‘Explore’ the Alps with separate 6-8 hour stages over two days.”

“Teams battling it out for line honours of the Expedition course should finish the course within 20-24 hours, while other teams may take as long as 36 hours to complete it” said Serge. “I think they will all love the challenge!”

The course is kept a secret until the day before the race and teams must navigate their own way to get to the checkpoints using only a map and compass. It is shaping up to be a real journey for teams who, after completing a short prologue course around

the Falls Creek village on Friday 25th January, will then be given maps as they try to recover for the 36 hour main event. On the morning of 26th January they will then be transported to a start location some distance away where they will embark on an epic journey from the valley to the mountains.

The focus area for the event will be around Slalom Plaza for the small course event on the Friday and finishing on the Sunday. All teams will have a GPS tracker and fans and friends should be able to call in and see how their team are going. For more information visit www.alpinequest.com.au. Also, keep your eye out for a team with Mark van der Ploeg as captain – while his brother Neil is heading up a team in the Tour Down Under.

On behalf of the community, your Ed welcomes all competitors to Falls Creek and we trust you enjoy the area and have a great event. •

Teams will have to dismantle and box their bikes at times during the event. Pic – Courtesy Alpine Quest

STILL SUMMERAt Falls Creek

As a basic rule of thumb, during a hot summer, the temperature drops by one degree celsius per 100 metres

altitude as you travel up the hill. The BHP Road at the golf course is at an altitude of 400 metres. Rocky Valley Dam at Falls Creek is at an altitude of 1600 metres above seas level. This gives us an altitude difference of 1200 metres – and if it’s one degree cooler per 100 metres then if the temperature in the valley is 40°C, then the temperature on the high plains will be around 28°C. Certainly makes the trip to Falls Creek a viable proposition.

And what do we do while you’re up at Falls?

Well, bring your mountain bike and take advantage of the Blue Dirt shuttles. Make the most of every weekend between now and the 23rd of April, 2019. $65 per day or $120 for two days. Book on-line at www.bluedirt.com.au.

If you fancy just going for a cruise, the Bogong High Plains around Falls Creek has about 30km of aqueduct trail and even more management vehicle tracks that you can ride all around in the National Park. Talk to the fabulous team in the Visitor Information Centre, upstairs cnr Slalom Street and BHP Road or phone 03 5758 1202. •

Alpine Quest

This one is for the adventure junkies amongst you! Participants take to the trails for a weekend of navigation around the resort and High Plains by foot, water and bike. Refer Write-Up on Page two. •

Dragon Boats

The Mile High Dragon Boat Regatta is an annual event on the calendar which enables expert and novice paddlers alike join in the fun on the highest body of water, Rocky Valley Lake. Everyone is welcome to join in or just enjoy a picnic on the foreshore and spectate.

Practice takes place on Saturday afternoon and if you’re keen to join a team, that’s the time to commit. Racing starts bright and early on the Sunday.

For guests, this is a fantastic weekend to spend at Falls Creek. The grassy banks of Rocky Valley are a beautiful place to spend the day with the family and soak in the excitement of the races. Food and drinks are also available on the foreshore.

Being a sport synonymous with Breast Cancer survivors, there is always a strong showing from the ‘Pink Ribbon’ teams each year. Community teams and the more serious outfits are also regular participants.

The ‘no experience needed’ disclaimer of the event means all are welcome for the Mile High and Mountain Challenge categories. Individuals can join an existing team (even on the day) and all training and equipment is provided including boats, life jackets and paddles. If you’ve never tried Dragon Boat racing before then this is the perfect opportunity to get out to the high country and try something new.

Visit www.fallscreek.com.au/dragonboats for further information. •

THE ROOFTOP RUNFollowing in the Family Footsteps

Local runner Ben Derrick completed a long-awaited journey from Mountain Creek to Mount Hotham last Sunday

6th January. Ben took part in the annual Rooftop Run, (or the Bogong2Hotham) which sees domestic and international runners take on the gruelling 64km course and finished in a highly respectable 2nd place only behind Dutch athlete Ruud Kappert.

The Derrick family has a significant attachment to the course with Ben’s uncle Charlie first attempting the crossing in winter 1965. Tragically, Charlie’s journey finished only a few hundred metres from Mt Hotham where he perished from exhaustion and exposure as the weather turned against him. Charlie’s final ski is remembered by many mountain locals at Falls Creek and Mt Hotham.

LOCAL TALENT

5Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

van der Ploeg (2013 XCE World Champion and also raised in Mount Beauty) who’s been at University for like forever but at the same time he’s been a professional mountain biker. So it’s possible.I like Physics so maybe something to do with engineering. I’d love to get involved with building new parts for bikes, making them faster and better. Developing ideas like Shimano’s new electronic gearing, which I’ve just got on my new bike.MR: It’s pretty obvious you like to keep involved with the mountain bike world. Do you feel any pressure from a biking perspective during your final year at school?Ben: There’s so many people helping me and pushing me into the pro mountain bike scene and it’s so easy to get sucked into it and think it’s going to continue to be easy for the rest of my life. I step back and think that it’ll be hard work, but with the right support I could do it. I think it’s important to still have to the love for mountain biking.MR: Do you think your love for the sport will change if you become a full on racer?Ben: Not really, As much as I enjoy the whole vibe of riding with my mates, hanging out and having a good time. I still really really enjoy the racing aspect of mountain biking, it determines who is the best and everyone wants to be the best at what they do.Racing has brought mountain biking to where it is today, bikes are lighter and faster and better than ever and racing has played a massive role in that.MR: Do you have any expectations racing your first EWS in New Zealand?

Ben: I have no idea. I don’t know if I’m going to come last or first or not finish. I hope there’s lots of riders, because in the Australian races there’s only like 20 athletes, but it’s the other side of the world for all the Europeans, so I don’t know if the junior riders will travel that far, but I’ll just wait and see.MR: Well have an awesome time; I’m sure it’ll be fun no matter what the result. Is there anyone you’d like to thank?Ben: Mum and Dad, Chris, Sam and everyone from Shimano. Results:In the Enduro World Series in Rotorua, Ben achieved a creditable 12th place out of

about 50 entrants in the U21’s after a bit of a rough day. After the trip to New Zealand, Ben then went on to compete at EWS Round Two at Derby, in North Eastern Tasmania. But this time, among the U21 competitors, it all came together for Ben and he finished on top of the podium - and is currently leading the U21 class after the first two rounds. However, summertime crossings can be a bit easier with the weather and near perfect conditions greeted the 2019 participants. But, after 64km and over 3,000m of vertical ascent there isn’t much that could make this event easy. The final climb up the relentless path that is Swindlers Spur from Cobungra Gap has been known to test even the toughest competitor.

For Ben it was an emotional as well as physical journey. Years of training held him in good stead to meet the physical demands of the event, but it was the emotional relief of reaching the summit of Hotham that was the greatest feeling. Ben said after the event that he was physically exhausted and incredibly foot-sore but he did manage to stop for a few moments of quiet reflection at Charlie’s memorial cairn at Derrick Cole as he approached the finish line. “That was a pretty powerful moment, even with the level of exhaustion of over seven hours of running” Ben said after the event. “I spent a moment thinking about what Uncle Charlie must have been going through at that stage nearly 54 years ago. It was a very poignant moment and really highlighted both the fragility and power of our lives.”

Ben said crossing the finish line and contacting his parents, who were at home on the family farm just near Wangaratta, with his partner Virginie was an enormous relief.

The event does have a strong local connection with ultra-running legend Andy Kromar holding the course record for over 20 years before it was finally knocked off by Julien Spence in 2017. Some of Andy’s exploits will live on in posterity as truly inspirational efforts.

You would think that Ben would have some ‘feet up’ time after this effort, but more likely than not you’ll see him out running on the trails at Falls Creek! •

To honour his uncle, Charlie Derrick, local athlete Ben Derrick has just successfully completed the Bogong to Hotham in second place. Well done! Pic – Courtesy

An Awesome Event

Bogong to Hotham 2019 could only be described as a perfect day on the mountain. The weekend kicked off with the safety gear check and race briefing for all participants - followed by a great social gathering at Flour + Water for pre-race carb loading dinner.

6am on Saturday 6th at Mountain creek camp ground saw 61 runners head off for the challenge and an awesome day in the mountains.

The weather was the best it has been for over 10 years with near perfect conditions for running and thanks to the fantastic track work carried out by Parks Vic in the lead up to the event, runners had a clear and fast run.

41 of 48 runners making it through the 35km Langford’s Gap check point under the 6hr time limit, with all going on to complete the 64km.

In the 35km event 12 of the 13 starters completed the event in under the 7hr cut off, while the 12 starters that took on the 29km second leg all completed the course making a finish rate of 87% the most successful rate in many years.

4 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK ~ Summer 2017 Edition THIRTEEN

Great Success

Local lad Ben McIlroy is an up and coming Enduro mountain bike racer. Over the last two years he has

progressed to be the fastest junior rider in Australia winning both the National Series and the National Championships in 2016. On March 26 Ben went and raced his first ever EWS (Enduro World Series) event in Rotorua, New Zealand. Prior to the event Matt Rousu caught up with Ben to chat about the race and his potential future in the mountain bike world.MR: Is this your first overseas race?Ben: Yep, first overseas race, first EWS (Enduro World Series), so it’s going to be pretty exciting.MR: Is it excitement or are you nervous?Ben: I’m probably a bit more nervous than excited. Excited to race overseas, but nervous because it’s such a big event.MR: Have you heard anything about the tracks over in Rotorua, NZ?Ben: From what Chris (Panozzo) has said, they’re fast and there aren’t many rocks.MR: How did you get into riding?Ben: Pretty much because of my Dad,

when I was about 12 I started showing more interest in racing. I went to a few of the Victorian Enduro events but after a couple of years that series kind of fell apart. I then stared racing the national series.MR: How many national events have you raced?Ben: My first national year in 2015. I raced three events, Toowoomba, Adelaide, and Canberra and placed 3rd overall for the series. In 2016 I raced the Bright, Perth and Adelaide National series events winning all three and the U19 series overall. I then went on to win U19 National Champs in Adelaide (with a time that would have knocked Troy Brosnan off the elite podium).MR: How did you end up travelling and racing alongside Chris Panozzo (2 time Elite Gravity Enduro Australian champion)?Ben: I first met Chris at a Victorian Enduro state round at Barjarg, I was still like Under 15s or Under 17s and I knew that he was a fast dude. I wanted to hang out with the fast guys so I wanted to hang out with Chris Panozzo.I remember at Barjarg the shuttles were always a bit delayed, we were hanging out down the bottom for so long that we nearly missed our race runs. When we got to the top, everyone was wondering where we’d been. He was just like “Ah we’ve just been chilling at the bottom.” So that felt pretty cool. After that he invited me to travel with him to the next round at Narbethong. During that trip we decided not to race any more of the Vic series. I thought that I wouldn’t really continue racing but then Chris invited me to Toowoomba. That was my first national race and from then on we just became mates and he invited me along to all

of the races he was doing.MR: What are your goals for this year, more EWS or is going to be too hard to juggle school?Ben: I’m racing the EWS in New Zealand and in Tasmania but this year I want to finish Year 12 and get out alive, do as much riding as I can and stay fit. It’s probably not the best year to be going into my first EWS because Year 12 takes up such a massive chunk of my time.MR: Have you got any plans for further studies such as University, or depending on how these two EWS events go, would you like to chance it and try to become a professional racer?Ben: I haven’t really thought too much about it. Becoming a professional mountain biker would be pretty sick but you sort of do have to have another profession once you come out the other side.MR: Do you think you’d be able to develop a career and race at the same time?Ben: Yeah, looking at someone like Paul

ANZAC Day

The years flash by; the numbers of actual returned service personnel diminishes - and yet the respect

increases. Fortunately conflicts of the scale of WW1 and WW11 have not re-occurred. New returned service personnel are now coming from the ranks of Vietnam Vets and those who have seen service in the Middle East. Numbers are being maintained by other service personnel and all are supported by the very appreciative public.Over the years, the numbers of spectator supporters that have turned up to show their appreciation has grown dramatically. This, to me, says that there remains a very strong - yet unspoken - feeling of gratitude and respect among the community and in our quiet way, we just turn up and express our acknowledgement of our ‘diggers.’ANZAC Day is the one of the few opportunities in the year where people can come together with a solemn and sincere purpose. It is a day that engenders pride and reinforces the gratefulness carried by the bulk of the nation. It is expected that this year will be no different.Falls Creek ServiceJoin the Falls Creek locals at this unique location, Eagle Rock, for the Dawn Service 2017.Shuttle for ANZAC Dawn Service: 5:15am - 6:30am Meet at Slalom Day Car Park.

A couple of other modifications to the paper include the way the Classified

Adverts are presented. Classified Adverts for businesses will be invoiced as per normal, but for those in the community wanting to run a little classified advert, we are running them like the old Trading Post. I.e. we’ll run the advert and you only pay when you have achieved the desired result – sold the item or obtained what you were looking for.

The ‘What’s On’ has been a feature of the paper for some time, but recent research has shown that some of the most popular ‘hits’ on web sites are going to the ‘What’s On’ information – showing that many people are looking to inform themselves of activities. Therefore, the What’s On in This Week has now moved to page three.

The paper will continue to feature high quality images sourced from several of our

very professional photographers in the area – and your editor thanks these pros for their great work.

As these changes are made, I would like to thank all of those businesses that have supported and continue to support the paper and the service it provides. We’re all part of the same community! •

DINING OUTRoi’s in Tawonga

Roi Rigoni and Sue White came into town in the mid-nineties and it wasn’t long before what had

previously been a quiet Asian restaurant was transformed into a warm and inviting Italian Restaurant titled Roi’s Diner – opening in September 1996.

Growing up in North Carlton in a family who loved their cooking it wasn’t long before an apprenticeship at William Angliss led Roi into a career as a chef.

Agency work took Roi to many of the top restaurants in Melbourne and also Adelaide – but the desire to ‘do his own thing’ meant a move from the city. He and Sue were working on the idea of a more stable

lifestyle and a quality restaurant in the beautiful upper reaches of the Kiewa Valley was just what was required. “We wanted to be everything that Melbourne is not.”

Being involved in the local community is another enjoyable aspect of life outside the big smoke and one super program that Roi got into was the ‘Secret Men’s Business’ initiative at the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre. This was a simple, but important program that taught men to cook – some just because they wanted to learn to cook - others because they had lost their partner/s and needed to learn to cook to be able to properly look after themselves. This once a week program provided a social outlet for those involved, taught men to cook successfully and the program received considerable acclaim for its recognition of a community need.

Some years ago, the restaurant changed from Roi’s Diner to Roi’s Restaurant – along the way gaining considerable recognition in The Age Good Food Guide over many years – with the famous Pork Chop almost going international.

The menu at Roi’s is varying – currently offering five delicious pasta dishes as either entrée or main. Then there are four of five dedicated entrées –all Italian inspired and tasty.

Mains are varied – almost to the pint of making it difficult to choose. From a range of Risottos, Eggplant Parmigiana, the afore-mentioned Pork Chop, Pork Medallions, Chicken Saltimbucca and Bresaola – premium air-dried Wagyu beef served with grilled artisan sourdough, house-made pickled vegetables and fresh horse radish and turmeric mayonnaise.

After working our way through pasta dishes and the Pork Medallions, it was time to

tackle dessert – and the biggest decision “how much of Roi’s home-made ice-cream can we have? – or should it be the Rumballs?”

The restaurant caters well for vegans and provides a quality range of Gluten Free choices.

The wine list is considerable and provides a comprehensive choice of local wines including wines from Beechworth, the King Valley, Mornington, Heathcote and also from SA.

In summary, an evening at Roi’s is an experience you will thoroughly enjoy and to get your taste buds tingling, check out the images and details on their facebook site Roi’s Restaurant. Located at 177 Kiewa Valley Highway, Tawonga, phone 03 5754 4495 to book. •
