Lets Move On - Prefix and Suffix ExercisesA Four Book Vocabulary Building Series Based on ThemesMarilee CarlsonStudents increase their vocabulary by building upon words they already know. An understanding ofprefixes and suffixes increases a students comprehension more quickly than learning individualwords in isolation. Each book in this series is organized around groups of prefixes or suffixes that

    deal with common themes.

    Book 1 - Function Book 2 - Negation Book 3 - Absence/Presence Book 4 - Description

The Lesson Plan For Each Unit1. A basic presentation of the eight parts of speech and their functions in English sentences.2. The suffixes/prefixes are introduced.3. The first page of the lesson is filled out together as a class.4. A matching activity provides further introduction to the suffixes and prefixes.5. A list of common words that contain the suffix/prefix is discussed as a class.6. Sentence Practice A. In the cloze activity students choose words from the Word Bank, alter them

and complete the sentences.7. Sentence Practice B gives students a structured opportunity to change an underlined word to a

new word with the suffix/prefix and make an altered sentence e.g., Sam bakes pies and cakes. /Sam is a baker. The words to be changed are underlined in Part B of each practice.

    8. Sentence Practice C is the same as B but the students are asked to determine on their ownwhich words to change. All of the words to be changed are included in the list found on thesecond page of the lesson, so students will always be able to refer to the list to see whichwords in the practice sentences can be combined with the suffix/prefix.

    9. Unit Review - Sentence Practice Quiz: Students are presented with sentences from the previoussentence exercises and they are required to change a word to a new word with the suffix/prefixand make an altered sentence.

    10. Unit Review - Four In A Row: Students attempt to place four consecutive markers in any directionon the board by giving correct sentences using the words given with a Unit suffix or prefix.

    11. Unit Review - Dominoes: Root word and suffix/prefix pieces are paired to make a word. Studentscan begin with 5 dominoes and take turns constructing some sort of shape (circle, rectangle, house, car) by forming correctly spelled words

    12. Unit Review - A Board Game: Players move around the board by making new words that containa suffix/prefix joined to the word on the card that has been drawn. Depending on the degree ofdifficulty desired, players can be asked to spell the new word. They can also be asked to use theword in a sentence.

    Answer keys are included.

Sophie Wangs Phonics Book for Adult ESL StudentsLINC Themes - Includes a CDSophie WangLearning to decode on the letter-level is an inevitable process for a student to become a successful reader, but many phonics books are either designed for children or for illiterate adult native speakers, not for adult

ESL students. Sophie Wang was inspired by her adult ESL students to develop phonics materials for ESLlearners with practical, useful content for everyday English. This is an important distinction; the vocabularywhich interests adult ESL learners is different from early education students because of their needs andmotivation. A five-year old may be interested in learning pony, but an adult ESL driver may eagerly want tolearn Private Parking - especially if they have been ticketed or towed! Sophies 175 page book covers 10LINC themes of interest to adult ESL students.

    NEW!

This is the third book by Maria and Agnes. Body and Ailments + Health and Pharmacy works well with anybeginner class, but is ideal for a teacher with a multi-level beginner class. All teachers know the challenge offinding material for a multi-level class. Its difficult to find one workbook to meet the needs of all the students. We created our own material to overcome this problem. Each theme has three beginner levels. Most targetvocabulary is illustrated, but in some cases higher level students will be asked to use their dictionaries todefine the target vocabulary. The students reinforce the new vocabulary with time-tested exercises. Once thevocabulary is reinforced the students practise their new vocabulary through reading, writing, listening andspeaking exercises. A rich variety of exercises will interest and engage your students.

Teachers often wish there was an audio CD with workbooks. They want their students to hear more nativespeakers of English in their classroom. The audio CD included with this book has four native speakers - 2male and 2 female. The CD content and track numbers are listed in the Table of Contents. Also lookfor the symbol seen to the right on the exercise pages. It indicates an audio CD track is available andthe track number. Some tracks are dedicated listening exercises, some are audio answer keys andothers are alternative tracks for read-a-long or passive listening. If you dont want your students to bepassive listeners try this activity. Photocopy the target vocabulary, pass out one word to each student andthen play the read-a-long track. Each time the student hears their word they hold it up or they stand up.

In each unit you will find a page of flashcards. These are great for matching games such as memory. Also included are Listening And Speaking Tests. These test vocabulary and sometimes preposition of place. For example, while looking at the grid of illustrations a student may be asked, Is the doctor above the

surgeon? The student will need to know the vocabulary and where the illustration is on the page in relation toother illustrations. We have included a preposition of place review sheet and activity in the Appendix.

Romeo & JulietThree Levels For Beginner ESL & Literacy Students In One BookAdapted by Rose Coffey

Teachers frequently ask for age-appropriate stories for their young adult and adult students at the beginnerlevel. This book includes three adaptations of Romeo and Juliet for beginners. The beginner student only hasto learn 96 words to understand the simplest adaptation. And these 96 words are ones that they need everyday in their lives! Only three words in the story are not on the most commonly used words list: Romeo,Juliet, and Tybolt. If the students can describe the basic simplified plot of the play with only 96 words, imaginewhat else they will be able to speak about. This book is ideal for the teacher who has a class of beginnerstudents at a variety of levels. Each of the three adaptations comes with its own vocabulary list and exercises. The exercises include:

The appendix includes a website activity, and tips for putting on a student-generated Romeo and Juliet play.

This book is for students who are reading sentences and ready to move on to stories. Each of the sixteenuplifting, high-interest stories in this book are 100-150 words long and written in about 20 short simplesentences. The author found her students could read simple sentences but were intimidated by the paragraphform of news stories. She presents each story first in a comic strip form - pictures with key nouns and verbs. The second version of each story is in an easy-to-read sentence-by-sentence format, i.e., each sentence ison its own line. Later in each unit your students will read the story in paragraph form. This technique is calledscaffolding, the students is successfully eased into paragraph reading, and it works .There are a wide varietyof readytophotocopy exercises to reinforce new vocabulary and ideas. The exercises:
