    temptation...

    The story attempts to explain

the origin of sin and evil. It isnor clear what kind of sin Adam

    and Eve committed. Nor does

the story tell how the first sin was

    committed.

However, the message is clear. It

tells us that man was tempted,

his free will was tempted. Man failed;he made the wrong choice. He was

    disobedient to Gods order, maybe

because he wanted to be like God.

This would point to mans pride.

    Evil can be presented as

    very attractive and good:

the woman saw that the tree was

good for food, pleasing to the

    eyes, and desirable for gaining

wisdom. So she ate, and she

also gave some to her husband

    and he ate it.

When man stops listening to Godand entertains temptations, his fall is very near.

    This illustrates how easily

    man can pull along his

    fellowman in his fall.

Most of all, he presents the outcome of disobedience as

something beautiful, desirable, and pleasing to man:

Your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods.

    The serpent is the

    tempter in the story.

    The Bible

    often uses

    the symbolof the

    serpent to

    speak of the

    devil.

    The serpent

    questions

    the wisdom

    and validity

    of Gods

    order.

    The author says: They

    realized that they were naked.

They were afraid of God, theyhid themselves. But knows

    everything. He called Adam

and asked him why he had

done it. Adam put the blameon eve, Eve on the serpent.

After the first sin was committed,

Adam and Eve realized that they

did wrong. They felt guilty andashamed.

Man always tries to justify or excuse his shortcomings and

failures. But every person is responsible for his own acts. The Love story of God and His People, 1984, Fr. Luc Colla CICM, Vera Reyes, Inc.

It makes light of the real

personal harm caused by sins topersons, families and whole

    communities.

    Usually we Filipinos are

ever ready to excuse our own

and others' faults: "Sapagkattayo'y tao lamang."

    We often interpret our mis-

fortunes as punishment from Godfor our sins (tadhana), or as a test

from God (pagsubok). But this can lead us to

    concentrate on the

    punishment rather than

the real evil of sin itself.

What really bothers most of us

is not so much the moral evil of sinas the feeling of shame (hiya),

    of losing face before others.

    The exclamation "Sorry!"

    is used so frequently in

    common speech to mean

something like "pasensiya"that it no longer expresses any

    genuine sorrow or contrition,

    with firm intention of

    changing one's ways.

But perhaps the more common obstacle

    to living as outgoing, charitable,

forgiving Christians in daily life is theintense concern we normally feel for

    family, friends and relatives

    "kamag-anak".

Unfortunately, this often is combined with

    complete unconcernfor others. Another

common problem arises when, with the

familiar bayanihan spirit, some sociallyoriented project is begun. Too often it fails

    because of the "ningas-kugon"defect of

not following through when the initial

    enthusiasm wanes.
