FRIDAY, APRIL 17

AT THE SHEBOYGAN YMCASchedule available in early April.

TOGETHERHOOD™Signature Program for Social ResponsibilityY members can participate in strengthening their community through convenient, fun and rewarding service projects that are part of the Y member experience.

The Togetherhood™ program is an on-going effort led by a volunteer service committee. This effort is separate from the Y’s engagement of volunteers working within the Y to support our programs. Togetherhood™ projects benefit the community at the individual, family and organizational level. Members are the leaders of the program. They develop project ideas, lead and run projects and are known as owners of the Togetherhood™ program. Sheboygan YMCA Staff Advisor Mike Burns facilitates connections to Y resources and strategic and safety guidelines.

Watch for postings of upcoming projects and sign up at the desk to volunteer for projects. To get involved you do not have to be on the committee. You can be a project volunteer and volunteer for projects that you want to support. SHEBOYGAN COUNTY YMCA CHILD CAREYMCA Child Care Centers are licensed child care facilities that offer quality care in a safe family-like environment for children. Our centers participate in YoungStar, a program of the Department of Children and Family Services, created to improve the quality of child care for Wisconsin children. YoungStar evaluates and rates the quality of care given by child care providers, helps parents choose the best child care for their kids, supports providers with tools and training to deliver high-quality early care and sets a consistent standard for child care quality.

The preschool programs have a preschool and pre-kindergarten curriculum with weekly themes and developmentally appropriate activities. The schedule varies by age and ability of the child and includes large group and small group activities and story time. Children participate in a physical activity every day, including gym and swim lessons and recreational swimming twice a week at the Sheboygan YMCA.

The grade school programs are open to children in kindergarten - grade 4 (age 13 at the Sheboygan YMCA) who attend school within Sheboygan County. Activities provide each child with age-appropriate experiences. The schedule may include arts and crafts, homework assistance, games or computer use. Children may also play in the gym, playground or park. All areas are supervised by child care staff. We offer before and after school care during the school year and full day care on days when there is no school and during the summer.

For availability at your child’s age level and pricing, please call Tanya at 920-451-8000 for Sheboygan or Colleen at 920-467-2464 for Sheboygan Falls.

STAGE DESCRIPTIONS

SWIM STARTERS

SWIM BASICS

SWIM STROKES

Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence- building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning preven-tion and the importance of supervision.

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:

• Swim, float, swim - sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide and exit

• Jump, push, turn, grab

Having mastered the funda-mentals, students learn ad-ditional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase so-cial-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a life-time of physical activity.

HAVE MORE QUESTIONS? Our aquatics director is available at 920-451-8000 x129 to answer any questions about the swim lesson program.

6 / STROKE MECHANICSIn stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.

3 / WATER STAMINAIn stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

A / WATER DISCOVERYParents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.

1 / WATER ACCLIMATION Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.

4 / STROKE INTRODUCTION Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

B / WATER EXPLORATION In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

2 / WATER MOVEMENT In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change and for-ward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

5 / STROKE DEVELOPMENT Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

MINDFULNESS MEDITATIONJANUARY 14 - MARCH 10, 2020Age 15 & OlderThe benefits of mindfulness meditation are many and are continuing to be discovered and documented almost on a daily basis. Numerous psychological studies have shown that regular meditation can increase happiness and produce more contentment in those who develop a disciplined practice.

• Anxiety, depression and anger all decrease among those who regularly practice meditation.

• Meditation can lead to better and more fulfilling inter-personal relationships.

• Studies worldwide indicate that meditation can reduce key indicators of chronic stress, including hypertension.

• Mediation has been found to effectively reduce such serious conditions as chronic pain and cancer and help combat and relieve drug and alcohol dependence.

• Regular sessions of mediation have been shown to enhance the immune system and help fight off colds, flu and other diseases.

• Mindfulness meditation is great for teens as well as adults!

This nine-week course will be taught by Jon Doll and Jane Lang and will be based on a combination of two things: 1) experience as lifelong meditators, martial arts instructors and practitioners of mindfulness and 2) A thoughtful book which will act as a guide and textbook for the journey. The book, Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan For Finding Peace In A Frantic World, was written by Daniel Penman and Mark Williams.

Mindfulness is loosely defined as 'paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, and without judgment to what is happening in and around you'. A goal in developing a strong mindfulness practice is to bring one's mind and body closer together in the here and now.

This course will introduce students to a series of helpful meditations which can be used to develop a sustainable and disciplined practice for every student; one that can be crafted for each person's individual lifestyle. Over the nine weeks, students and teacher will practice together and experience first hand the challenges and benefits of developing a per-sonal practice. At the end of the nine weeks, students will become familiar with the following meditative techniques - all of which can be used to create a well-designed program of practice for each student.

• Body and Breath Meditation• Body Scan Meditation• Mindful Movement Meditation• 3-Minute Breathing Meditation• Sounds and Thoughts Meditation• Befriending Meditation• Exploring Difficulty Meditation

The registration deadline is Monday, January 6, 2020.

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAMThe YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults make lasting lifestyle changes that will improve your overall health and reduce your chance of developing type 2 diabetes.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is an innovative program proven to reduce the burden of type 2 diabetes, one of the nation’s costliest chronic diseases. It has been shown to reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58% overall and by 71% in adults over 60. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance, and other national organizations committed to preventing chronic disease.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is for one year of 16 weekly sessions followed by 8 monthly sessions. In a relaxed classroom setting, a trained Lifestyle Coach helps participants learn skills that will incorporate healthy eating, increase physical activity and other behavior changes into their everyday lives. The program goals are 7% weight loss and an increase in physical activity to 150 minutes per week. To be eligible, participants must be at least 18 years old with a BMI of 25 or greater and at risk for developing type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Youth under 18 and persons diagnosed with diabetes do not qualify. A Y membership is not required for participation.

Enrollment in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program includes a 6-month YMCA membership and a participant workbook/resource binder. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can also be held at worksites or almost anywhere there is a meeting room and a group motivated to make a positive lifestyle change.

To see if you qualify or for additional information, please contact Mike Burns or visit www.sheboygancountyymca.org. If you would like to start an exercise program prior to the Diabetes Prevention Program in February, please contact Mike at [email protected]/920-451-8000 x118 or Matt at [email protected]/ 920-451-8000 x117.

• Our fitness schedule is subject to change. It is published separately from the brochure.

• The fitness schedules are updated about once a month and are available at the Welcome Desk or on our website at www.sheboygancountyymca.org.

• Warm-ups are an important part of each class! Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of each class

As part of a successful group fitness program at your YMCA, we want to offer beneficial days, times and types of classes. Therefore, the fitness schedule is subject to change. We consider 7 participants a beneficial number in a class. If a class averages less than this over a 3-week period, we may eliminate it. In addition, if there is a class that is not currently offered, we may add it as well.

All fitness classes will run continuously with the exception of holidays. The schedule will be adjusted during holiday weeks. There are no breaks and no hassle with payments. We value your membership and want to make it as beneficial as possible. Please contact the Healthy Living Director at 920-451-8000 x114 with questions or to provide feedback.

• Unlimited specialty fitness classes are for members only. Register for classes you plan to attend regularly.

• Members have two payment options: $12.00 on a monthly bank draft or $80.00 if paid in full until 8/31/20.

• Drop-ins are based on availability. The drop-in fee is $5.00 for members and $10.00 for participants.

Spinning® is a cardiovascular workout performed to music on a trademark Spinning® bike. It is a great off-season opportunity for triathlon training. Class taught by a certified Spinning® instructor.

Tai Chi is a deep, meditative, internal Chinese practice. At its original core, it is a martial art, but it is commonly practiced and taught in a manner that strengthens and promotes the mind, body and health of dedicated practitioners. We will focus on the ‘Yang style’ of Tai Chi Chuan, both the short and long forms. This practice will improve memory, balance, flexibility, stamina and core strength. The motions, one by one, are relatively easy to learn, but will challenge one’s mind to string together over time and incorporate into one’s “muscle memory.” There is also a meditative aspect of the art that will improve one’s peace of mind and ability to relieve stress.

Vinyasa 1 is a slower paced flow class creating sequences geared to open and strengthen the entire body. Time is spent breaking down sun salutations and other poses fundamental to a Vinyasa practice. Class is taught by a 200 Hour Registered Yoga Teacher.

MEET JOHN SEAMAN - CONCEPT2 INDOOR ROWER ONE MILLION METER CLUB!

John Seaman of Sheboygan Falls and a Sheboygan Falls YMCA member, has recently reached a milestone on the Concept2 Indoor Rowing Machine. John has logged over 1,000,000 meters or 622 miles! This achievement was over an 8 month period from March 2019 to November 2019, with 163 workouts taking 79 hours. A certificate was awarded to John by the Concept2 Million Meter Club, an online website provided by the manufacturer of the Concept2 rowing machines used at the Sheboygan Falls and Sheboygan YMCAs. Concept2 has a smartphone app that can be downloaded from their website, and through bluetooth can be initiated each session to automatically log the rower’s workout. It can then be sync’d by WIFI with the website with the meters rowed and the workout elapsed time. Concept2 is a world-wide organization, and rowers can compare their interval times for different workouts and their meters rowed to virtual rowers around the world.

John is not a newcomer to rowing, as he rowed and raced Adirondack Guideboats over a period of 6 years in the early 1970s in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York. Adirondack Guideboats are hand-built, lightweight wooden craft similar to double-ended canoes; however, they are rowed instead of paddled. Typically 16 ft. long, and 33 inches wide, they are made from spruce ribs and thin pine beveled-joint planking weighing only 60-70 pounds. They were built by craftsmen to be light weight and strong to be portaged by the Adirondack Guide taking paying customers back into the remote lakes of Upstate New York in the 1890’s and early 1900’s.

John won numerous races, including the 44 Mile Marathon from Long Lake to Tupper Lake via the Raquette River, for 5 of the 6 years he competed from 1970 to 1976. John’s 1973 record time of 6 hours and 17 minutes still stands, which includes a mile carry to portage around the Raquette River Falls. John also won the 3 ½ mile Hanmer Regatta at Saranac Lake NY 5 of the 6 years he competed. John still has his 1910 guideboat, and may be spotted rowing around Elkhart Lake Sunday mornings on nice summer days.

John was introduced to indoor rowing by the Thrive, Strive, and Be Fit Indoor Rowing Group at Matthews Oncology in Sheboygan. John started treatment for CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia) in January 2019, and started rowing in March 2019 after

clearance from his doctor. Matthews Oncology has four of the Concept2 Indoor Rowing Machines, and John rowed there and at the Sheboygan Falls YMCA as often as he could. The treatments ended in July 2019 with successful remission of the disease. John attributes keeping in good physical shape as a key to tolerating the treatments.

The Thrive, Strive, and Be Fit Indoor Rowing Group is currently comprised of 22 area cancer survivor-athletes. Some survivors in the Indoor Rowing Group have exceeded 2 million meters since starting the Concept2 rowing program in 2017. There are several challenges held during the rowing season, including the Fifth Annual Lake Michigan Crossing March 14, 2020 where the Team takes turns on the rowing machines at the Sheboygan YMCA to virtually row across Lake Michigan. Challenges recently completed were the Fall Team Challenge and the Skeleton Crew Challenge. John encourages anyone interested in a full-body aerobic and strength workout to try the indoor rowing machines. John sends special thanks to Strive, Thrive, and Be Fit, the Sheboygan County Cancer Care Fund, and the YMCA for offering these opportunities to the community. Congratulations to John from all of us at the Sheboygan County YMCA on your outstanding achievement!
