LETTER TO THE EDITOR

A letter to the editor allows you to share what’s important to you with your local newspaper. You

can also keep an issue going by preventing it from disappearing from the public eye or stimulate

the interest of the news media and create more coverage for the matters such as oral health.

Dear Editor,

Grandfamilies are becoming more commonplace in today’s society with one-in-ten children residing full-

time in their grandparents’ homes. According to Oral Health America’s 2016 public opinion poll conducted

by Wakefield Research, 57% of grandparents delayed their own dental care to accommodate the cost of

their grandchild’s dental care needs. I would like to encourage readers to make oral health a priority by

committing to brushing, rinsing and flossing their teeth twice a day for two minutes, visiting the dentist

every 6 months, avoiding tobacco and eating a balanced diet.

Oral Health America's Fall for Smiles campaign, which takes place during September and October every

year to encourage Americans to focus on oral health, includes dental care tips for older adults and

children, two of this country's most vulnerable populations when it comes to oral health. These tips and

additional resources can be found at oralhealthamerica.org/fallforsmiles. For these populations and all

Americans, preventative care is the key to avoiding more serious dental problems in the future.

In the next 20 years, nearly a quarter of the U.S. population will be age 60 or older. To help this booming

population maintain good overall health, we need to focus on the importance of oral health for older

Americans, and all Americans, today.

Sincerely,

[Your name/organization]
