On behalf of our Smyrna School District Board of EducationPresident Vetra Evans-Gunter, Vice President Kristi Lloyd, andBoard Members Scot McClymont, Chris Malec, and KathrynO’Connell, our 712 employees and our 5,233 students, I amhonored to welcome our community back to school on Mon-day, August 29, 2016.

The 2016-2017 school year will be an exciting one as we cel-ebrate 133 years of Smyrna High School graduations with theClass of 2017. Our annual homecoming parade will be Friday,October 28, 2016, our “I Love the Smyrna School District” daywill be Saturday, February 25, 2017, and our graduation willbe on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 10 a.m.

In the area of curriculum, we have a new Curriculum DirectorJune Wicks and a new Curriculum Supervisor Ryan Buchanan.Our new director has encouraged all employees of theSmyrna School District to read “Mindset” The New Psychol-ogy of Success. The book speaks to the question, “How wecan learn to fulfill our potential in parenting, business, school,and relationships”, by Carol S. Dweck, PhD. This 250 page gemalso asks, “Are you in a fixed mindset or growth mindsetworkplace? Do you feel people are just judging you or arethey helping you develop? Are there ways you could be lessdefensive about your mistakes? Could you profit more fromfeedback you get? Are there ways you can create more learn-ing experiences for yourself and for our students?” It furtherstates to create a growth-mindset environment in which peo-ple can thrive involves:

• Presenting skills as learnable• Conveying that the organization values learning

and perseverance not just ready-made talent or genius

• Giving feedback in a way that promotes learning and future success

• Presenting employees and students as resources for learning who prize the development of ability

The book is filled with examples of people who believe thatwe can all cultivate our basic qualities and everyone canchange and grow through application and experience. Au-thor Carol Dweck believes that a person’s true potential isunknown and unknowable, that it is impossible to foreseewhat can be accomplished with years of passion, toil, andtraining, and she shares many examples of perseverance and

growth by corporate leaders, athletes, teachers, etc. If youwould like to check this book out yourself, each SmyraSchool District employee has a copy and each school willalso have some books that can be checked out.

As you may have noted while touring around the SmyrnaSchool District many construction projects have taken placeover this short summer vacation. Sprinkler systems, newpipes down the hallways, new lighting, and new drop in ceil-ings are underway at Clayton Elementary and North SmyrnaElementary Schools. The project, under the able architec-tural firm of Fearn/Clendaniel is now working 10-hour daysand Saturdays to allow these projects to proceed. Also, theThomas D. Clayton Building remains closed for this schoolyear as major structural renovations take place and JohnBassett Moore had a new black-topped parking lot thanksto our wonderful legislators.

Smyrna High School, John Bassett Moore IntermediateSchool, Smyrna Elementary School, and Sunnyside Elemen-tary School have been thoroughly cleaned by our custodi-ans and are ready for students and teachers. These sameable custodial crews will now help to finish other schoolprojects slowed by summer construction. The Smyrna Mid-dle School’s custodial staff were busy with 22 days of the K-12 Summer Learning Academy. Now the middle school staffis finishing their work for the first days of school.

The projects, large and small, that it takes to keep oureleven buildings updated and safe takes teamwork from allof our staff, students, parents, and community members.While the work is not easy, it is a blessing that we have thefunding to do it.

A special thank you goes out to our legislators SenatorBruce Ennis, Senator Dave Lawson, Representative Bill Car-son, Representative Jeff Spiegleman, and RepresentativeTrey Paradee for helping the Smyrna School District withconstruction funds. They are our constant supporters. Also,a thank you to Levy Court President Brooks Banta, SmyrnaMayor Joanne Masten, and Clayton Mayor David Lettermanfor always being just a phone call away when we need as-sistance.

Year after year our school family has been blessed with thebacking of our community as we continue our students’ ed-ucational journey. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Clayton Elementary needs volun-teers to help out with our PTO. Thisis an organization that is very few innumbers but does a tremendousjob in supporting the students andstaff at Clayton Elementary. The staff at Clayton ElementarySchool would like to welcomeour Clayton students and theirfamilies to another greatschool year. The administra-tion, secretaries and custodialstaff have been extremely busythis summer preparing for thestudents’ arrival on Monday,August 29th. The entire Clay-ton Elementary staff will be ex-cited, prepared and ready foropening day!

This summer has been unusu-ally busy as the school has un-

dergone severalmajor renovationprojects. The ma-jority of the proj-ects will becompleted by the1st day of school;however, some ofthe projects willcontinue through

September but will not interferewith the educational process.Some of the renovations includethe following: installation of asprinkler system, new tile floorsand ceilings in the KN and 1stgrade wing, new ceilings for themajority of the building, up-dated WI-FI in all classrooms,updated heating/AC and a secu-rity system.

Not only has the building under-gone some changes, but thestaff at Clayton ElementarySchool has had a few changes,as well. This school year, our youngerstudents will look forward to re-cess time even more as we havepurchased a new piece of play-ground equipment. A hugethank you goes out to our PTOofficers, PTO members and CESfamilies for helping us raise

enough money to purchase thenew equipment. In just a fewweeks, you should see a red &black “train” play set being puttogether in our playground.

Please be aware of the SmyrnaSchool District Dress Codeprior to the first day of schoolto ensure the students aredressed properly. The SmyrnaSchool District Board of Educa-tion recently approved a fewchanges to the dress code. Ad-ditionally, your child will bebringing home the CES Hand-book on their first day ofschool. You are encouraged totake some time to read overthe handbook in order to famil-iarize yourself with the school’sprocedures and policies. Feelfree to contact Mrs. McGuireor Mr. Reed at any time if youhave questions during theschool year.

The administrative team at Smyrna Elementary School wouldlike to welcome all new and returning families to the 2016/17school year. As with the opening of every school year, the up-coming year promises to bring wonderful learning opportuni-ties, excitement, and a variety of challenge. Our teachers havebeen excitedly preparing their classrooms and honing theirteaching strategies, while our custodians and maintenancecrews have worked hard to prepare our building for a safe newyear. We all anxiously await the opportunity to develop a part-nership in a positive learning environment with you and yourchild(ren) and we look forward to your active participation inour school functions and educational experiences.

Our new families at all grade levels are invited to visit theirclassroom on Friday, August 26 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.The purpose of this visit is to help our new students to transi-tion to the school year by having an opportunity to meet theirteacher and see their classroom. While Kindergarten studentsare visiting their classroom, please be sure to pick up yourchild’s bus identification card. It is imperative that your childwears this tag each day during the first two (2) weeks ofschool.

An adults-only Open House will be held for parents of all stu-dents on Wednesday, August 31. We encourage you to attendthis informational evening. We will begin in the gymnasiumfor opening remarks from building and district-level adminis-tration and staff. General classroom sessions will follow withyour child’s teacher. After the informational session, familiesmay explore the various areas of the building or visit with an-other child’s teacher. Additionally, the school nurse, relatedarts teachers, guidance counselor, and cafeteria manager willalso be available to answer questions. This is an opportunityto introduce and familiarize yourself with the new classroomand grade level expectations. SCHOOL AGE CHILD CARE PROGRAM: There will be before-school care available at Smyrna Elementary School. The name of the programis the Breakfast Club. The program will be operated by the staff of the SmyrnaSchool District. Students may be dropped off as early as 7:15 a.m. The cost is$3.00 per day (non-refundable), which must be paid in advance. Paymentsmay be made to your child’s school cafeteria, the District Child Nutrition Office,or online via www.mySchoolBucks.com. The students will receive breakfastduring the time they are in the program, homework help, and supervised arts,crafts, and games. Continuing for the 2016-17 School YearWe are pleased to continue a few new safety measures to ourschool safety plan this year.

- The car rider pick-up loop will close at 8:35 am and re-open at 3:00 pm. If you arrive after 8:35 am, please report to theoffice to sign in your student. as 8:35 am is the start of the in-structional day and your student is late. We will have a barricadeup to stop any cars from going behind the building during theschool day. This will allow our students to enjoy an extended areafor recess, as well. At 3:00 pm the barricade will be removed.Please do not arrive until 3:00 pm each day. Car-riders are dis-missed at 3:15 pm.

- We have purchased a new check-in system from Raptortechnologies. The Raptor system scans licenses, military iden-tification cards and other state issued identification cards tocheck-in visitors while simultaneously scanning the sex offenderregistry. Parents and visitors must bring their identification intothe school the first time they are visiting so your profile can beentered into the system. If your identification was scanned duringthe 2015-16 school year, that information remains in the system.Visitor passes will print upon approval with your photo and thelocation you are visiting with a time and date stamp.

Emergency cards need to be signed and returned promptly. Please include home, work,cell, and emergency numbers. Emergency cards will be given out the first day of school.If any of this information changes over the course of the year please notify the officeand update your records. zona and Delaware. He has been teachingand coaching football for over 15 years.He began his head coaching tenure in1998 and led his varsity team to three Ari-zona state football championships. He hasbeen awarded coach of the year twice andconference coach of the year six times. Hehas been a strong member of the commu-nity involved in the Optimist Club and astrong advocate for youth sports and afterschool programs. He resides in Delawarewith his wife and children.

New technology throughout the DistrictSmyrna Technology has been working witha number of schools to install 3D printers.These amazing new printers will be usedto teach students off all grades technologyideas such as architectural design, spacialengineering, and Computer Aided Draft-ing.  These printers have been installed atSunnyside Elementary, John BassettMoore Intermediate, Smyrna Middle, andSmyrna High Schools.

Each school has been upgraded from10mg bandwidth to 100mg bandwidth.

This upgrade was provided to improve new testing methods which re-quire students to connect to remote Internet sites. Implementation wascompleted earlier in the year in time for the 2015 school year testing, re-sulting in great success.

Finally, Technology is in the middle of a project to provide wi-fi to eachclassroom. This technology will allow more devices to be used in eachroom that are mobile, including laptops, iPads, Chromebooks, and othersmart devices.

We want to welcome all of our families and students to Smyrna Middle School as we preparefor another exciting year in 2016-2017. We have been busy all summer ordering new mate-rials, preparing our classrooms, and designing academic programs, all in an effort to makethe coming school year another successful learning experience. Our custodians have cleaned,polished, and re-assembled our classrooms so that they are first-rate and ready to go. Ouroffice staff have ordered the necessary supplies, compiled handbooks, and registered all ofour students. Our teachers have taught the summer learning academy, completed additionaltraining and courses, and/or revised their curriculum in an effort to provide quality instructionfor our families. SMYrNa FFa Shines again!The Smyrna Middle FFA Chapter once again had an outstanding showing at theState Agriscience Fair competition, June CDE week, and at the 2016 DelawareState Fair. The following students competed in the State AgriScience Fair com-petition in June: Nick Shane, Division I Animal Systems, Delaney Tome and AbbyConway earning 2nd place in Division III Power Structural and Technical Systems,Jessica Bergold earning 2nd place in Division I Social Systems, and Justin Barberearning 1st place in Division I Plant Systems. All students will be traveling to In-dianapolis, Indiana to attend and compete in the National AgriScience Fair Com-petition. The students attending the National FFA Convention will also participatein leadership workshops focusing on teambuilding and career skills. During JuneCDE week, the following FFA members participated in the Middle School MilkQuality Career Development Event: Tim Dziubinsky, Tanaya Wilson, Abby Conwaywho placed 8th individually, and Jamie Cleary who placed 4th individually. Theteam placed 2nd in the competition. In preparation for the Delaware State Fair, numerous FFA members attended ed-ucational farm tours and practices throughout the summer to train for their re-spected Career Development Event. The following FFA members participated inthe Middle School Horse Evaluation Career Development Event: Jessica Bergold,Raegan Sebastianelli who placed 9th individually, Delaney Tome who placed 7thindividually, and Lee Humbertson who placed 1st individually. The team placed2nd in the competition. Andrew placed 7th individ-ually whereas Payton placed 2nd individually, qualifying her to compete regionallyat the Big Eastern Exposition in Springfield, Massachusetts. In addition to Career Development Events, Smyrna Middle School FFA membershave been very busy showing livestock animals at the 2016 Delaware State Fairand volunteering over 50 community service hours throughout fair week by vol-unteering at the Delaware State Grange and the FFA petting zoo. Not to mention,the 2016-2017 SMS FFA Executive Committee which consists of Payton Dixon,Nick Shane, Sammy Brittingham, Megan Keller, Aliyah Street, and Natalie Watersparticipated in a two-day leadership training session this summer where they metwith State FFA Officers and advisors to develop team building skills and plan outthe upcoming FFA year. Overall, SMS FFA is very proud of all our members’ ac-complishments throughout the summer and is excited for the upcoming schoolyear!

DRESS CODE

In September 2012, the Smyrna School District Board of Education approveda new universal school dress code.

The new code was the result of a dress code committee studying the issuesof uniforms and/or a stricter dress code.

In June 2012, the committee sent out a dress code survey to each parent.Once again, there was no clear mandate for uniforms but from the manycomments a universal dress code policy for the district continues to be animportant goal.

Students of the Smyrna High School Principal’s Advisory Committee recom-mended changes in the dress code. Changes were approved by the SmyrnaSchool District Board of Education in June 2016.

The updated dress code is present in this brochure.

Studies have shown a positive relationship between students’ concern fortheir appearance and their concern for their education. The same is true inregard to good appearance and manners. Students have the responsibilityto wear clothing that is non-provocative and clean. In June 1995, DelawareGovernor Carper signed House Bill 76 that allows school districts to enforcedress codes.

The following clothing is acceptable:

Acceptable Pants/Shorts & Skirts:• Worn such that skin or undergarment at the waistline is not visible• No rips or holes that expose the students’ skin above the knee• Skirts, dresses, and shorts which have no part of the

garment shorter than two inches above the top of the knee • Opaque leggings and yoga pants that do not reveal skin or

undergarments are acceptable

Acceptable Tops:• Do not display profane or vulgar messages

• Do not promote violence, sex, drugs, or alcohol

• Fully covers the midriff area front and back at all times

• Fully covers the shoulders with no exaggerated necklines or arm opening

• Are not see-through or versions of mesh see-through shirts/tops

Hats and Headgear:• Are not to be worn in school with the exception of documented

religious or medical reasons• Hoods attached to tops may not be worn on one’s head

Other:• Visual body piercings of any kind, except for earrings on ears, is

prohibited• Spiked jewelry and chains are prohibited for safety reasons

• Gang logos, emblems, or other items that identify a student as a part of a gang are prohibited.

• Clothing such as see-through pants and “loungewear” such as pajamas, sleepwear, or slippers are unacceptable.

Disregard of the Smyrna School District Dress Code will result in the fol-lowing action:

Students who choose not to comply with this dress code will be sent homefor the day and marked absent. The absence will be included in the totalabsences for the school year. Any repeat offenses may be considered defi-ance of authority.

Wellness Center News

Summer is coming to a close and we are gearing up for anew school year. The staff at the Bayhealth Wellness Cen-ter at Smyrna High School hopes that you have had a safeand enjoyable summer. We look forward to serving the stu-dents of our community in the future. Bayhealth’s Wellness Centers provide Delaware’steenagers with health services in cooperation with eachteen’s family physician. The center provides physical,mental, nutritional, and educational health services for itsmembers. The goal of the Wellness Center is to promotehealthy lifestyles, increase school attendance and improvethe student’s ability to concentrate. All students in grades9-12 are eligible to access Wellness Center services. To participate in the Wellness Center, a parental consentand teen health history form must be completed on eachstudent. Your child will receive a Wellness Center packeton the first day of school. Please feel free to call 302-653-2399 with any questions.

The Administration of Smyrna High Schooleagerly awaits the arrival of students for the2016-17 school year. The east side of the build-ing (Smyrna Side) is designated for studentparking. Students who wish to drive to schoolwill present their completed Application forDriving Permit with all supporting documentsto Mrs. Sfamurri in the front office, along withthe $10 parking fee beginning on August 17,2016. Only students that have completed theirsix month restricted driving process may pur-chase parking tags. Students who owe an obligation will not beallowed to purchase a parking pass until theobligations are cleared. Parking spots may not be reserved at any time.Seniors are permitted to purchase their parkingtags on August 17, from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM.Juniors may purchase their parking tags on Au-gust 22, from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM. All remain-ing students may purchase a parking tagbeginning August 24, from 8:00 AM – 3:00PM. Please note that the main office will beclosed on August 23, from 7:30AM - 1:00PMfor a District-wide meeting. All cars using the school parking lot must dis-play the tag on the rear view mirror. Any carin the school parking lot that does not displaythe tag by the start of school on September 6,will be subject to towing.It is the position of the Smyrna High SchoolAdministration that driving to school is a priv-ilege, tied to the Code of Conduct. Studentswho violate the Code of Conduct may havetheir driving privilege revoked. The Adminis-tration urges the students and parents to be-come familiar with the regulations associatedwith the driving privilege as indicated on theApplication for Driving Permit.When entering the Smyrna High School prop-erty, all traffic must enter using the Westside (Clayton Side entrance) and exit theproperty using the East side (Smyrna sideexit). Please be mindful of the 15 MPH speedlimit and yield to pedestrians crossing on theirway to the building. No vehicles are permittedto park in the bus lane or to drop off or pick upstudents in front of the school between thehours of 7:00-7:30AM, and 2:15-2:45PM. Theparent drop off is located on the Smyrna sideof the building next to the entrance to the Au-ditorium lobby. Please follow the driving di-rections provided by the signs, cones, andschool personnel in that area when droppingoff a student in the morning.

eSchool Attendance is recorded for every class ofthe day

Student daily attendance will be based on the fol-lowing:

• Absent 1 Period = full day present• Absent 2 periods = half day absent• Absent 3-4 periods = full day absent

The Attendance Review for semester and year-long class credit will be determined using thetotal days Absent for each individual class. Stu-dent credits will be awarded or denied for eachclass individually.

Students will be permitted to miss up to 10 daysfrom a semester-long class, and up to 20 daysfrom a year-long class and still be eligible to re-ceive academic credit for the class.

Tardy to school is for students not in the buildingby 7:30 am. Three unexcused tardies will be thesame as one day Absent. This day of absence willcount towards the total allowed absences for theyear for that class. The tardies will be recorded inthe main office before the student reports toclass.

Tardy to class is for students 15 minutes or lesslate to any class of the day. The consequence isthree unexcused tardies is the same as one dayAbsent. For each unexcused tardy starting withthe 6th, the student will have an additional con-sequence of 1 day in SBIP. These absences are in-cluded in the student’s total allowed absences forthe year and may result in credit for the coursebeing denied.

2.0 right to File a ComplaintAn organization or an individual may file a complaint regarding an alleged violation of FederalProgram Statutes or regulations by the Delaware Department of Education or the Local Edu-cation Agency. For purposes of this regulation, a Local Education Agency shall also includecharter schools. A written and signed complaint shall be filed with the Delaware Department ofEducation. 2.1 The complaint shall include a statement specifying the alleged violation by the State Edu

cation Agency or a Local Education Agency. Such statement shall include facts and documentation of the alleged violation.

2.2 The Delaware Department of Education shall investigate the complaint and issue a written report including findings of fact and a decision to the parties included in the complaint within sixty (60) working days of the receipt of the complaint. An extension of the time limit may be made by the Delaware Department of Education only if exceptional circumstanc-es exist with respect to a particular complaint.

2.3 The Delaware Department of Education may conduct an independent onsite investigation of the complaint, if it is determined that an on site investigation is necessary.

3.0 Complaint Made to the Local Education agency An organization or an individual is encouraged to file a written, signed complaint with the LocalEducation Agency, prior to submission of the complaint to the Delaware Department of Educa-tion, concerning an alleged violation by the Local Education Agency of a Federal statute or reg-ulation that applies to the Local Education Agency’s program. 3.1 The complaint shall include a statement specifying the alleged violation by the Local Edu

cation Agency. Such statement shall include facts and documentation of the alleged violation.

3.2 The superintendent or the agency head of the Local Education Agency shall investigate the complaint and issue a written report including findings of fact and a decision to the parties involved in the complaint within sixty (60) working days of the receipt of the complaint,

Boston, MA from May 4 to 9, 2016. Frantz Desir, Malik Henry, Boaz Menard, Jacob Mitchell, Danger Mor-rissiey, Justin Nash, Alison Sayers, Allison Wheatley, and PaytonZolper were awarded with the coveted Torch Award. Torch Awards area way for students to show their involvement their community andBusiness Professionals of America. There were 12 students that at-tended the National Leadership Conference along with advisors AngieHewes, Kevin Rudolph, and Alexandra Ulrich. Students attendedworkshops, sessions, and participated in the Workplace Skills Assess-ment Program competitive events to bring awards home in the areasof finance, business administration, digital communications, manage-ment, marketing and communication and information management. There were seven students that earned top awards. StatE FaIrStudents & teachers make district proud

HARRINGTON, DE— The Smyrna FFA Chapter brought home a variety ofawards and colorful ribbons after having a successful showing at the2016 Delaware State Fair, with numerous recognitions being presentedat the Delaware FFA Awards Breakfast held on July 29.

Winners & School AwardsNine members of the Smyrna High School FFA were first Place winners inthe AgriScience Fair competition, which showcased scientific skills andanalysis in the areas of agricultural research. These scientific membersincluded: Cassidy Cook, Taylor Davis, George Class-Peters, Erica Malloy,Erin Smallwood, Wade Solloway, Trey Thompson, Hannah Walker, andRyan Wheatley. Jessica Bright also placed second in AgriScience Faircompetition. The team of Cassidy Cook and Hannah Walker were namedoverall winners of the AgriScience Fair and will represent Delaware in re-gional competition this Fall.

The Smyrna FFA Agricultural Issues team with their topic, “AgriculturalEducation: Teacher Shortage” placed first with team members including:Jessica Bright, Taylor Davis, Grant Dinsmore, Erin Smallwood and TreyThompson. Their forum now qualifies them to compete at the NationalFFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana in October.

The Smyrna FFA Agronomy, Horse Evaluation and Livestock EvaluationCareer Development Event (CDE) teams all placed second and earnedthem a trip to regional competition in September, to compete at theEastern States Exposition in Springfield, MA.

The Agronomy judging team consisted of Ashley Hurd, Wade Solloway,Ryan Wheatley, and Dylan Wilson; with individual recognition going toRyan Wheatley for placing second, Ashley Hurd placing fifth, Dylan Wil-son eighth, and Wade Solloway eleventh. The Horse Evaluation teamconsisted of: George Class-Peters, Kaylee Pierce, Taylor Smith, and Han-nah Walker. Individual Horse results included: Hannah Walker placingthird, George Class-Peters placing seventh, and Taylor Smith placingtenth. The Livestock Evaluation CDE team was comprised of members:Taylor Brittingham, Cassie DiMattia, Savannah Pollard, and Wade Sol-loway. Individual livestock awards went to: Wade Solloway fifth, Savan-nah Pollard seventh, Cassie DiMattia eighth, and Taylor Brittinghameleventh.

The team of Gabby DiRusso, Kathryn Emerson, Josh Meixell, and TylerMeixell placed third in the State FFA Nursery & Landscaping competitionand were only three points away from taking second place. Individualhonors go to Kathryn Emerson for placing sixth, Gabby DiRusso seventh,Tyler Meixell ninth, and Josh Meixell for placing tenth.

Dakota Correll drove his way to third place again this year in the SafeTractor Operation CDE, by operating a tractor along with a two and fourwheel wagon against other statewide competitors in a course designedto test speed, accuracy and safety around obstacles. Dakota was joinedby fellow FFA member, Gabby DiRusso who was the only female to com-pete in this event and placed a respectable eighth.

In other competitive events, the chapter fielded a variety of teams andindividuals in the areas of: dairy cattle evaluation, dairy showmanship,forestry, agricultural mechanics, and chapter displays.

The Dairy Cattle evaluation team of Cassidy Cook, Kaylee Dulin, ErinSmallwood and Trey Thompson placed fifth.

The Smyrna FFA was also represented in the Dairy Showmanship eventby members Jayden Dixon and Peyton Dixon who scored in the top fourby demonstrating their skills and awareness in the show ring when work-ing with dairy cattle.

The Forestry team of Rebecca Calderon, Kasey Euren, Josh Johnson andNathan Metts placed third in team competition, with individual honorsgoing to Rebecca Calderon for sixth place, Nathan Metts for placingninth, and Kasey Euren for placing eleventh in an event that evaluatestree species, diseases, equipment and land surveying.

The Agricultural Mechanics team of Jake Brown, Dakota Correll, RyanMcNatt and Dylan Snow placed third in state competition held at LakeForest High School in an event that involved small engine troubleshoot-ing, plumbing installation, and welding.

The Smyrna FFA Chapter for a record setting fourth year in a row deliv-

ered a blue ribbon performance, in the DelawareAgricultural Products Display competition with its“Spanning the State” bridge theme. The displaywill be featured at the National FFA Convention’sHall of States exhibition in Indianapolis, Indiana.The Smyrna FFA also exhibited a display in the ed-ucational category of Environmental science enti-tled; “Water You Doing?” and it received a secondplace ribbon.

FFA Fair ExhibitsWhen it came to growing, arranging, harvesting orbuilding fair exhibits, there were a number ofSmyrna High School FFA members who suppliedcompetitive entries. This year the Smyrna Agri-Science Program and its members were able to re-ceive over $1,000 in judging premiums awarded bythe Delaware State Fair. Premium ribbon winnersincluded:

• Jake Brown- 1st Concrete Product, 1st Electrical Display, and 2nd Plumbing Display.

• George Class-Peters- 6th Potted Foliage.

• Cassidy Cook- 2nd Red Tomatoes, 3rd Gallon of Wheat, 3rd Timothy Hay, 3rd Bundle of Wheat, 4th Carrots, 4th Gallon of Barley, 4th Bundle of Barley, and 5th Sweet Corn.

• Dakota Correll- 1st Timothy Hay and 6th Orchard Grass Hay.

• Taylor Davis- 2nd Concrete Product, 2nd Electrical Display, 3rd Plumbing Display, 4th Gallon of Wheat, 5th Brown Eggs, 5th Bundle of Wheat

The final award received by Smyrna was the NationalChapter Award, which is given to the top three agricul-tural programs in the State and verifies that the chaptercompleted at least 15 different activities during theschool year. The award recognition also provides theSmyrna FFA with the opportunity to be in the nationalspotlight as two chapter officers will be able to walkacross the stage at the National FFA Convention and re-ceive further accolades and be shown on the RFD-TVNetwork.

Smyrna High School AgriScience teachers past and pres-ent were also bestowed with honors by the Delaware As-sociation of Agricultural Educators, as a part of theAwards program. Mr. Keith Shane and Mr. Jay Davis wererecognized for their years of service award. Mr. Shane re-ceived a certificate and pin for his 25 years of teachingAgricultural Education, while Mr. Davis was acknowl-edged for his 20 years of service to the profession. Longtime Smyrna High School AgriScience educator, Mr. Rus-sell Stinson received the Lifetime Achievement Award forhis career that spanned over three decades. Stinson con-tinues to serve the community and acts as the Advisorfor the newly reformed Smyrna FFA Alumni Chapter.

The Smyrna FFA Chapter was founded in 1976 and makesa positive difference in the lives of students by develop-ing their potential for premier leadership, personalgrowth and career success through Agricultural Educa-tion. The chapter is under the direction of FFA Advisors:Keith Shane, Jay Davis, Sarah Bell and Kellie Michaud.
