@FPSUSSEX @FPSUSSEX @HELPNJHOMELESS A message from Joe Young, Board of Trustees President of Family Promise of Sussex County COVID-19 is scary, it is real, and we don’t know what will happen next. If you are like most people, our first instinct is to retreat and hold on. We can see this in empty shelves at the store. In crisis, we often believe resources are scarce, we feel vulnerable and we turn inward for protection. The fact is everyone is impacted– all of us are vulnerable. Some more, some less, but regardless, each one of us needs to first look for the safety and security of ourselves, our families and everyone we love – remember Airline rules– put your mask on first, then help those around you. Often we feel the capacity to love is limited to only those we know. Funny thing about love– it’s actually creative and multiplies the more we share. When we give love or empathy, especially when we are vulnerable ourselves, it grows and returns back to us in ways we can’t even imagine. Some of us have more resources or capacity than others. It is impossible to measure one person’s capacity and compare to another – none of us knows what each is going through, even if we are facing the same threat. What we can do is ask you to evaluate your own capacity and reach out in love. I am asking you to remember those who are impacted who have no financial capacity – the Homeless. Family Promise of Sussex County has been hit by COVID-19 much like other non-profits and businesses. With over 10 million people filing for unemployment this month, homelessness has the potential to get worse during these times, even with government support. Family Promise of Sussex County needs to be financially strong to provide those facing homelessness the help they need. Please consider sharing by donating what you can at this time. Regardless of whether or not you wish to give to Family Promise of Sussex County – share something with someone – share your love because together we will grow stronger and come out of this crisis better than ever.

What do you imagine when you think of homelessness? Do you imagine big cities

with people sleeping on the streets and begging for food?

I know that's what I imagined before I came to work for Family Promise. The truth is,

homelessness can be subtle, secretive, and hiding right under our noses. Did you

know that in 2019, New Jersey had the highest foreclosure rate in the nation for

the FIFTH year in a row? Within New Jersey, Sussex County ranked as having one of

the highest foreclosure rates in the state.

Your neighbors need your help.

When you don't have a home, how are you supposed to:

-stay at home?-wash your hands?-self-isolate?-disinfect?

HELP US HELP THEM.

Now, with people being laid off and businesses closing due to the pandemic, the

foreclosure and eviction rates are only going to rise. According to NJ Spotlight News, "There

is a moratorium on evictions during the pandemic, but landlords have continued to file

cases. Housing advocates fear a surge of evictions when the moratorium lifts. 'It will

explode into a tidal wave if we don’t do something,' said Staci Berger, president of the

Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey. 'We have people who have

been living paycheck to paycheck for years, playing by the rules, going to work, trying to

pay their bills, watching their rents go through the roof,' Berger said. 'And through no fault

of their own, they are slammed with a pandemic.' The COVID-19 pandemic has left

more than 1 million people unemployed in New Jersey."

As the end of the year quickly approaches, I quite often find myself taking a step back to

reflect on the year. This year has been anything but easy, but many of us can call

ourselves lucky. We had a safe, comfortable home to lay our heads at night and to keep

us healthy throughout the pandemic. We were able to follow the guidelines to remain

healthy: wash your hands, sanitize, self-isolate, wear personal protection equipment. Not

everyone had this luxury. At Family Promise of Sussex County, we work with families

experiencing a housing crisis. So, let me pose this question: when one does not have a

home, how are they supposed to stay at home? Wash their hands? Disinfect? Self-

isolate? How can these families stay safe?

That's where WE come in! Our programs work with individuals and families who are experiencing a housing crisis and assist them in

relocating and stabilizing to achieve self-sufficiency. These programs are funded by grants with strict guidelines and restrictions. Many

of the families in need in Sussex County do not meet the rigorous criteria in order for us to aid them through these programs. That's

where YOU come in! It is only through direct donations from donors like you that we can achieve the level of success that we have

achieved. With your support, we can help your neighbors that may not meet the stringent criteria outlined by our grantors. Please

consider donating today to help us continue to serve our community throughout these extremely difficult times. Just look at all of the

amazing things we have been able to achieve this year with the help of donors like you:

Here at Family Promise of Sussex County, we too have adopted a mode of prevention to mitigate the unintended consequences ofCOVID-19. Our agency’s task today -more than ever- as we navigate the COVID-19 terrain, is to ensure that we expand our capacity and

response efforts to assist the already displaced and help prevent at-risk populations from becoming homeless, helpless, and hungry.

On December 6, 2020, we teamed up with Cerbo's Christmas Tree Farmin Branchville for a fundraising event. Thanks to the generosity anddonations of local bakeries and farms, we raised just under $1,200 justfrom the bake sale!

One of our housing specialists, Zach Anderson, offered professionalphotographs to families in exchange for a donation to the agency.

The Cerbo family also generously offered a $10 donation from everytree that was purchased on that day and for anyone who brought in aflyer for the event throughout the season.

We cannot thank Cerbo's and our community enough for the amazingsupport that we received at this event!
