Dear Saints Community,

We come to the close of another successful year, and I humbly

thank you for your support as we can proudly say we have met our goals once again. Through the generosity of our community, we were able to accomplish all that we set out to do when we began this year of being “called” by Christ to make a difference in the lives of our students. You made this possible through your many hours of service, your ongoing support of our fundraisers, and by partnering with us in your child’s education.

Our theme in 2017-2018 was “We Are Called,” and the Saints community was tasked to support our beloved school as well as reach out to others as we worked together to help those in need. We will never forget how our families immediately joined together after Hurricane Harvey to fulfill our mission as a Catholic school in service to others. Many of you spent countless hours laboring in flooded homes and assisting the surrounding community. You made a difference in the lives of those you were helping and were a beautiful example of the Works of Mercy for our young people. The generous outpouring of financial support was overwhelming and truly appreciated by those who benefitted from the

funds, prayers, and kindness when they needed it the most.

As a school, we set out to build on our goals of academic rigor, Catholic identity, and celebrating our wonderful diversity. Our success can be measured in an overall improvement in scores, positive feedback from our parent and student surveys, and a general excitement to expand on what we have started. There are many wonderful new initiatives in the works as we look to the future and always seek to improve as a parish school. This year was full of obstacles, from severe weather to illness and concerns for our pastor and family members. We were called to be a light for each other and were reminded often that we are here for others and not just ourselves.

Through it all, our school was proudly blessed to celebrate an abundance of academic, athletic, and artistic awards by individuals as well as teams. From our amazing award-winning 7th and 8th grade band, abundantly talented choir production of Beauty and the Beast, multiple championship sports teams, endless hours of service by our students, faculty and parents, and many memorable and successful events, we were called to do our best.

Please enjoy looking through the following pages and noting some of our major accomplishments this past year. As you glance at each page, know that you were an integral part of our success and we could not be where we are without you. We continue to ask for your prayers and support in the coming years. Thank you for allowing us to answer our calling and, most importantly, for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our students.

God bless,

Suzanne Barto, M.Ed.Principal

Dear St. Laurence Family,

It is amazing how fast this school year went and what a year it has been. We faced so many challenges starting with Harvey,

and the school year had barely even started. How blessed we are to be part of such an amazing community where all of us came together as one in prayer and support for each other. On a personal note, I couldn’t be prouder of being part of this community as all of you have been praying with our family and witnessing God’s miracles through our little girl.

I am pleased to say that St. Laurence continues to strive to be the best private and parish school possible. We celebrate our great accomplishments, especially in the areas of academics, technology, community involvement, fundraising, and athletics. Our academics are abounding as our teachers continue to challenge students by introducing and using new techniques such as differentiated instruction. Our students and families continue to be fully involved in our community, both in our parish, the city of Sugar Land, and the surrounding areas. Our fundraising efforts, such as Step for Students, hit new levels this year. Thanks to you, our amazing parents, the Annual Fund and Auction Gala

reached and exceeded funds for our school’s operating expenses. Our athletics continue to flourish at SLCS as each of our sports has had great seasons over the years. Our mission emphasizes the trinity of parent, child, and educator; and this year, we were a vivid example of how important that is for the School as well as the community.

Mrs. Barto’s successful style of leadership continues as she embarks on her third year as our Principal. We are blessed to have such a caring and dedicated leader who creates a safe and caring environment for our children, while continuing to challenge them through the curriculum.

As a School Board, we continue to work on our Strategic Plan, which was proudly written by a dedicated team

comprised of the Board, Faculty, and volunteers. This will be the end of the second year of a three-year plan; and each quarter, we ensure that there is evidence we are achieving our goals.

I would like to thank all the employees and volunteers who have faithfully shared their gift of time and talent this school year. To my fellow outgoing School Board members, it has been an honor serving with you and thank you for all your hard work. I am looking forward to serving our school board one more year and working successfully with our newly discerned School Board members.

God bless,

There is an old proverb that says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The same can be said of running all our PTO programs. The 2017-2018 school year had 31 Executive Board Members, 42 VIP Coordinators, and countless

volunteers. We extend our sincere appreciation to all the volunteers who came forward…we have an amazing community at SLCS. We witness this in our daily activities but also in very large measures with so many of you stepping forward when called to help our Saints families impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our annual PTO Family Rosary Night had a record number with over 300 in attendance coming to pray together. Despite Hurricane Harvey, we still raised over $22,000 with our fundraiser Steps for Students. All monies raised by PTO throughout the year go right back to our school through family events, school donations, and instructional support.

Every student at SLCS benefits from each donation that PTO makes on behalf of the entire parent community. Our parent volunteers give so much to our school in making PTO a success. We would also like to thank the faculty and staff at St. Laurence Catholic School for providing leadership and guidance to our children.

Yours In Christ,

S T R E A MFull STREAM Ahead

SLCS is going full STREAM ahead with its newest edition: the Collaboratory. You may have heard the term STEM in reference to the science, technology, engineering, and math

reemergence in education. At St. Laurence Catholic School, we added the religion and arts components, which transforms STEM into STREAM—a more fitting acronym for a Catholic school.

The upstairs teachers’ lounge was repurposed to provide students a large work area to practice 21st century skills, including communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. In the Collaboratory, students are given the opportunity to practice the engineering design process by brainstorming, planning, creating, and

making improvements to their projects all while collaborating with peers.

One of the first projects tasked to 8th graders was to design the packaging for a chocolate chip cookie using cost-efficient materials so it would not break falling from a vending machine at 1.5 meters. Third graders were challenged to build a Cherokee winter or summer home using materials similar to what was available at the time: clay, mud, wood, and twigs. Sixth graders designed a graph depicting global warming trends, using data collected from NASA since 1880. These types of hands-on, collaborative projects will help our SLCS students become excellent communicators and problem solvers as they move on to high school and beyond.

FIRST HERITAGE DAY AT ST. LAURENCE CATHOLIC SCHOOL!

We are very blessed to have so many cultures represented at SLCS and want to ensure that our students benefit from the wealth of

languages, experiences, and diverse cultures that surround them each day.

We find diversity beautiful and greatly value the importance of cultural identity. Our goal is for our students to be well-rounded, culturally aware, and to love and respect one another. We strive to create a united and harmonious environment for all.

During March, our students learned about the many different cultures represented at our school. On March 22nd, we celebrated our first Heritage Day with cultural presentations involving the different countries. Many volunteer parents presented a wealth of information to our students. It was a great day of sharing cultures while celebrating the diversity of our global community. Thank you to all our wonderful parents who contributed to this enriching experience for our students!

Matthew 5:14- You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.

THE PHILOSOPHY

St . Laurence Catholic School Special People in Catholic Education (SPICE) supports the education of children in our community with special needs . SPICE serves students who are struggling to meet the demands of the current, regular classroom setting .

OUR START

SPICE began six years ago, when SLCS realized that we were no longer able to serve the needs of some of our students . The Principal, Debra Haney, researched keeping families with diverse learners together . SPICE began with four students in 2012 . In cooperation with Fr . Drew, Principal Haney, St . Laurence Catholic School Board, and the PTO, the SPICE program became a reality .

THE NEED

The need for support of SPICE grows each year, due to the specialized resources offered . SPICE families may pay triple the cost of the typical SLCS students .

Our SPICE Program impacts the lives of our students, families, and the entire community . Inclusion promotes understanding, compassion, and respect for all . We need your support to keep our mission alive . Please contact our Director of Support Services or Director of Advancement for more information 281 .980 .0500 .

Please join us at A Celebration of our Unique Gifts,

The St. Laurence Booster Club celebrated its sixth year, and it was a successful year! We met our goals of increasing

membership and gym sign sales as well as continued growth in both Spirit Store and concession sales. We added several new items to our Spirit Store, such as beanies and eye blacks, and we are currently working on a new spirit t-shirt design. Our concession stand was very popular at all sporting events, including a few new healthy choices added to our selections that proved to be well-liked. We are extremely grateful for the support of our St. Laurence families and the greater St. Laurence community. It is only with their partnership that we can continue to provide such wonderful assistance to our athletic department.

On behalf of the St. Laurence Booster Club Board, I would like to thank the athletic directors, coaches, administration, teachers and volunteers for making this another great year for our student athletes.

Your participation helped provide the resources necessary to develop our students in mind, body, and spirit! Our school is unique in that we do not receive significant funding from

government sources or the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. We make a difference daily in the lives of 700 students because of you, our generous donors! We strive to be good stewards of our budget, recognizing our partnership with every donor as an honor and a privilege. In the financial times in which we live, our yearly tuition revenue only accounts for about 69% of the funding necessary to educate a student at St. Laurence Catholic School.

In 2017-2018, SLCS continued its success with the School Board’s strategic initiatives of ensuring a financial commitment to our school community. Each

year, your contributions allow us to offer competitive teacher salaries, tuition assistance, professional development for faculty and staff, expansion of academic programs, and funding reserves for facility repair and replacement. Our expenses and revenues for the fiscal year of 2017-2018 are shown below.

We are so grateful for the time and talent of our dedicated Finance Committee members. Their support helps mold future saints who support our school mission.

St. Laurence Catholic is a parish school that has been blessed and humbled by the generosity of parents,

friends, grandparents, corporations, and foundations over the past 26 years. This support was unwavering as our community came together in countless ways to support and provide security after the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. We are grateful for the gifts of time, talent, and treasure and how our community stood together for the sake of our students throughout each event in 2017-2018.

The opportunities for giving to SLCS are listed below, along with our results from this past school year. The St. Laurence Catholic School Advancement Office prepares the annual report and has made every effort to ensure this listing is accurate and complete. The donors listed in the publication made a contribution

to SLCS between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.

If we have omitted your name or listed it inaccurately, please accept our sincere apologies. We ask that you contact the Advancement Office at 281-980-0500 to advise us of any errors so we may make corrections.

ANNUAL FUND

Our Annual Fund efforts continued this year as we met the challenges of the fall and put our focus on this year-long campaign. We are grateful for all our gifts amounting to just under $190,000. Since we do not receive local tax dollars, we depend on the generosity of our St. Laurence community and beyond to provide our students with cutting-edge technology, arts, athletics, and tuition assistance.

AUCTION GALA

The SLCS Auction Gala is always the highlight of spring. The community support was apparent here as we raised just shy of $300,000 in the most amazing display of fellowship! These funds support our general operations for the next school year. Many thanks to those volunteers who gave their time, talent, and treasure to make the night a HUGE success. We are eternally grateful for the abundance of volunteer participation.

ST. LAURENCE CATHOLIC SCHOOL TUITION ASSISTANCE GOLF TOURNAMENT

Many of our families desire the quality Catholic education of our parish school, but simply cannot afford the full tuition in times of distress or when an emergency occurs, leaving them in need of financial help. The golf tournament benefits the tuition assistance

STEPS FOR STUDENTS

SLCS participated in the Archdiocesan annual 5K event, Steps for Students. The Archdiocese organizes this fun event and asks all Catholic schools to participate in a show of unity. This year, SLCS had over 700 registrants in this fun-filled event, raising over $24,000 for PTO.

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) works very hard each school year to provide programs, events, and fundraising efforts to benefit SLCS. In addition to Steps for Students, PTO’s efforts raised over $75,000 for our school by selling used uniforms, collecting Box Tops, and contributions made using the Kroger, Randall’s, and Target card programs.

GRANTS

SLCS also applied for and received a $21,000 grant from the DeBusk Foundation to host the DECATS program at St. Laurence. DECATS is a student enrichment program which is offered to students Archdiocesan-wide.

CHARITABLE GIVING

Last school year, SLCS gave out over $5,000 in charitable donations to various organizations we serve. These donations were funds collected from grade-level service projects, bake sales, and other school-wide projects. SLCS does an amazing job of supporting local organizations in our community and raising awareness of the less fortunate, all while teaching our students the importance of giving back.

18 The Spirit| The Spirit | Fall 2018

Each year, we ask for support of our Annual Fund to help bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating

our students. Your participation, at whatever amount is right for you, provides the resources necessary to develop our students in mind, body, and spirit. Gifts to the Annual Fund are voluntary and are therefore tax-deductible, unlike tuition. Every year, we strive to achieve a goal of 100% participation in the Annual Fund. A loyal community with a strong participation shows potential donors, corporations, and

foundations that we believe in our school and its programs.

We would like to thank all who supported our Annual Fund in 2018—we appreciate your participation. As we prepare for our new campaign, please prayerfully consider renewing or increasing your gift through recurring payments. Your regular support allows us to recruit some of the best educators and offer them professional development, provide technological support to students in the classrooms, maintain our facilities, and offer sibling discounts.

Your generosity touches the lives of all students at SLCS. Let 2018-2019 be the year you “Renew, Recur, Reward.” Our Annual Fund kicked off September 19 , 2018, and your participation is vital. Please contact the Advancement Office at 281.980.0500 to make a gift.

Every gift of time, talent, and treasure to St. Laurence Catholic School is appreciated and helps us achieve our goals. Please contact our Advancement Office with any questions 281.980.0500.

Planned Giving

Generosity comes in many forms, and it’s often the best way for you to support important organizations that matter most to you in your life. When you make a planned gift to St. Laurence, you ensure that the School will continue to provide a legacy of high-quality Catholic education for generations to come. With your gift, you may also receive substantial tax and financial benefits.

Memoriam

Keep a friend or loved one’s giving spirit alive through a personalized donation. In place of flowers, consider giving to St. Laurence Catholic School in memory of a loved one.

Recurring Gifts

Recurring giving allows us to recruit some of the best educators and offer them professional development, provide technological support to students in the classrooms, maintain our facilities, and offer sibling discounts. Setting up a monthly, quarterly or annual gift is an easy and convenient way to make a difference all year long.

Matching Gifts

Many employers have matching gifts programs—does yours? Employers will often match any monetary gift an employee makes or will make a monetary donation for each volunteer hour the employee gives to St. Laurence. Contact your Human Resources Department for more information.

Securities

Consider donating appreciated securities (stocks, bonds or mutual funds you’ve held for more than one year) to St. Laurence Catholic School. By doing so, you may be able to reduce or avoid capital gains taxes

and receive a federal income tax charitable deduction.

Honorarium and In-Tribute

Consider honoring the birthdays and anniversaries of your loved ones with a gift to St. Laurence in their name.

Time

We love volunteers at SLCS and would love for you to share you time and talent with us. Please contact the School office for more information.

A U C T I O N G A L A

This past April, we “blinged” out our favorite black dresses and enjoyed an amazing evening at the Marriott for our “Black and

Bling” annual Auction Gala. The auction is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we are happy to announce that we surpassed our goal by raising nearly $300,000.

The time and talents of our wonderful parent volunteers helped make the Gala a huge success. They were our “boots on the ground” scouring the city for the best auction items, calling on friends and neighbors, and working countless hours planning and setting up the Live, Big Board and Silent Auction areas along with the Wine Pull. As parents, they went above and beyond on class projects this year…so much so we had more than a few make it into Live and Big Board! So many families donated wine and other items, and we are grateful!

Extra special this year was the surprise Live Auction item featuring Lance Brown who awed the audience with his live painting on stage of the “Painted Christ.” The crowd was so impressed that Lance was able to sell his painting three times! He continued to paint while the party enjoyed the festivities! Music from Klockwork Band played into the night as guests danced and continued to celebrate SLCS.

We are truly grateful for the support from all of you in making this year memorable and a “blinged out” success!

2017 TUIT ION ASSISTANCE GOLF TOURNAMENT

Community and fellowship were overflowing at The St. Laurence Catholic School Tuition Assistance Golf

Tournament on November 13, 2017. Our families, our faculty and staff, and other members of the SLCS Community had had an eventful fall with the arrival of Hurricane Harvey but we had faith that we could all come together to support our students and have much needed to time to enjoy each other. It was a beautiful example of having hope in the midst of a storm as we welcomed

new sponsors and players to this great event.

We are grateful for all those who believe in and support Catholic education, values, and commitment so we can educate and prepare our students for the future. This amazing program allows children already attending St. Laurence Catholic School to remain at our school in the event their family experiences substantial, life-changing events which would financially impact their ability to remain enrolled. Proceeds

from our annual golf tournament immediately benefit our tuition assistance program which is depleted on a yearly basis. This year the golf tournament contributed over $25,000 to this fund. We also appreciate the support from our major sponsors and numerous volunteers who came together in Texas-size way after our Texas-sized storm!

A good school

provides a rounded education

for the whole person.

And a good Catholic school,

over and above this, should help all its

students to become saints.
