Congratulations Bill Offutt! The Friends of Kinder

Farm Park are pleased

to extend special

congratulations to Bill

Offutt on his recent

promotion to Anne

Arundel County’s Chief

of Regional Park Operations. Bill became the first

Superintendent of Kinder Farm Park in May 1998

after working as a park ranger in the county for the

previous nine years.

With almost 30 years of experience in the county,

Bill brings a lot of expertise to his new position and

fortunately Kinder Farm Park will continue to

benefit from that experience.

The Acting Superintendent Shuffle In the Summer edition of this newsletter, it was

announced that Bill Offutt was “temporarily” filling

the Chief of Regional Parks Operations position

until a replacement could be found, and that

Superintendent Nolley Fisher from Downs Park

would temporarily fill Bill’s old position at Kinder

Farm Park. However, due to Bill’s promotion and

another promotion out of Downs Park staff, Nolley

has returned to Downs Park.

Thank you Nolley for returning to take the reins at

Kinder Farm Park, especially during our Fall

Harvest Festival.

Welcome to our new Acting Superintendent, Susan

Payne. Susan brings a lot of experience from her 20

years with the county Department of Parks and

Recreation. She has worked in every park in the

county (including a short time at Kinder Farm Park

in 2003), except Downs and Ft. Smallwood. In

2012 Susan was selected Ranger of the Year; and in

2016 she was named the Department’s Employee of

the Year.

Fall Harvest Festival, a Big Success By Mike Lowman, FoKFP Board Member

Despite a rainy start to the day, our annual Fall

Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 13th, was a

big success. We estimate that around 7500 people

came and enjoyed the fun, food, and shopping that

were featured at this event.

This year we had a new layout that provided a

smaller, more compact footprint for the event. We

moved the food vendors out of the Pavilion and

Playground areas to the grassy area on the hill

above the Comfort station, (where the pony rides

used to be located). The games for young children

were set up on the lawn in front of the Kinder

Farmhouse.

Fall Harvest Festival… (Cont.)

Putting the festival together starts a week or two

after the previous festival, when the committee

meets to discuss how what worked and what needed

to improve. Then in April, the committee starts

meeting monthly to iron out all the details for the

next festival. In addition, it takes a few hundred

volunteers to work the festival itself, and a

monumental amount of support from the park

rangers and staff to make the festival happen.

On behalf of the Friends of Kinder Farm Park, a

special note of appreciation goes out to all those on

the committee, the park rangers and staff, all the

volunteers, and to all of those that attended for their

support for this event and this unique place, Kinder

Getting Our Tractors in Shape By Mike Lowman, Friends of Kinder Farm Park Board Member

In the summer edition of this newsletter one of our

board members Kirk Platt told you about the

purchase of the,” new to us,” 1995 Ford 545D

tractor and the work involved to get it ready to

safely pull wagons for our hayrides.

Kirk’s efforts to get at least four of our 12 antique

tractors in safe operating condition for hayrides at

our major events did not end there. To understand

the condition of the tractors that we could or could

not use, Kirk met with John Bolly, who until

recently was maintaining the tractors.

Realizing that the work required was beyond what

could be done at the farm, and would be somewhat

costly, Kirk started asking around and found Mr.

Grimes and Sons, who just works on older tractors.

Not only were they capable of getting the tractors

working, but Mr. Grimes was willing to purchase

two of our non-repairable tractors to help offset the

cost of the work that needed to be done.

When all is said and done, thanks to Kirk and Mr.

Grimes, the Friends will have four tractors capable

of pulling wagons for our events, they include the

Ford 545 D, and three Minneapolis Molines, the

G1000, the G707 and the 5 Star.

Reviving the Antique Tractor Club

A couple years ago the Antique Tractor Club just

kind of faded away after its leader had to step aside

because of work demands. Though it was called a

club, it was more a group of folks that shared an

interest in tractors, maintaining them and driving

them for park events and in community parades.

No formal meetings were held, business was

conducted when members would work or get

together to drive the tractors.

The Friends of Kinder Farm Park have 12 tractors

in their collection, of which the four mentioned in

the previous article are used for Hayrides at our

major events. The other 8 are in various conditions,

here is a list of those:

1. 1944 Allis Chalmers (runs)

2. 1944 International Harvester Farmall

(Clutch stuck, does not run)

3. 1949 Case VAC (runs)

4. 1949 – 1950 Oliver (runs)

5. 1951 Farmall Super C (runs)

6. 1951 Farmall Cub (runs)

7. 1951 Ford 8N (does not run and has flat tire)

8. 1959 John Deere 435D (runs)

Are you one of those people that have always

wanted to drive a tractor; or do you have an urge to

get behind the wheel of a tractor again, and/or get

greasy and dirty working on a tractor? Consider

joining others with similar interests in forming a

new Antique Tractor Club. If you have any

Farm Education Livestock News By Roy Fielder, Farm Education Livestock Group Leader

With the summer winding down and cool weather

approaching, it’s time to think about feed for the

winter. Our cows will eat 30 to 40 round bales

during the winter months. These round bales will

weigh between 600 and 800 lbs. each. We will also

receive at least 150 square bales that we unload and

stack in the cow barn. These will each weigh

approx. 40 -50 lbs. That’s 35,000 pounds of hay

each winter.

We are also excited that our pig “Dottie” is

expecting piglets in early November. We all hope

everything goes well. This fall we plan to breed 4

of our eco goats, 4 of our dairy goats, and 5 sheep.

We should have plenty of spring babies. In

addition, 6 more rabbits will be re-homed to reach

our goal of 4 females.

The one joy of the upcoming cool weather is no

more flies, ticks, mosquitoes, and parasite loads.

This has been a bad bug year. Our group also had

our first camp out at the park in late September. We

had 80 kids and adults who came and enjoyed a

great night of family fun. It is so nice to see kids

Farm Livestock Group Campout at Kinder Farm Park

playing and running around without being glued to

video games. We had food, s’mores, and roasted

marshmallows by the fire pit and even sang some

songs.

Finally, our eco goats have been working hard to

clear out some invasive patches of weeds and vines.

They have done a great job but will be winding

down soon as the foliage dies. Great job done by all

who work so hard to keep animals happy and

healthy at our park.

FLASH!

Recently Dot has given birth to three piglets and we

now have a small herd of alpaca at the farm. So if

Fall at the Apprentice Garden By Janet Clauson, Co-Chair of the Apprentice Garden and Master Gardener

The Apprentice

Garden at Kinder

Farm Park is a

program organized by

the University of

Maryland Extension

Master Gardeners.

The Apprentice

Garden is dedicated to

teaching families with

children to grow their

own produce

organically, and it occupies the “first” space at the

community garden entrance.

Each family has a personal garden space, ~3.5’ by

8’, where they can plant the vegetables they would

like to eat, and the families and Master Gardeners

share in planting and tending the common garden

areas. From April through September, we meet

every Wednesday at 6:30 PM to plant, weed, water,

de-bug, and harvest our garden-grown vegetables,

fruits and herbs.

The gardeners plan to maximize the produce from a

garden space using a variety of strategies: 1) by the

appropriate timing and

spacing when planting,

2) by inter-planting early

and summer vegetables, 3)

through successive

plantings to spread out the

ripening of one type of

crop, and 4) by succession

planting of fall crops when

spring and summer crops

are finished.

For each season’s plantings, no-till gardening

techniques are used; no pesticides or herbicides are

applied; and only Leaf-gro and organic fertilizer are

used monthly. At the beginning of each month,

families fertilized their plants with organic

fertilizer. Pests are hand-picked and dropped in a

bucket of soapy water. Though no pesticides were

used in the garden, again this year, we had

surprisingly few pests.

2018 was a challenging season for all gardeners.

Greens of all kinds produced well, early in the year,

and string beans had a notably long season.

Tomatoes and peppers ripened later in the season,

and continued to produce well into the fall. A

favorite harvest is always the digging of potatoes,

and this season produced a large number of

potential French fries. While the children can

observe other vegetables as they grow, potatoes are

always a surprise as the children find them while

carefully digging under the dried-up potato vines.

A new challenge this season was the addition of a

pumpkin and gourd garden, planted in seven (7)

ten-foot raised beds along the back of the Visitor’s

Center. The vines grew well, climbing over trellises

and across straw bales placed to protect the tender

vines from the hot asphalt. The harvest of gourds

and a variety of small pumpkins were used by the

park rangers for fall events at Kinder Farm.

Perennial grey

goldenrod and Black-

eyed-Susans, planted

long the outside

edges of the garden

fence bloomed well.

Their blooms

attracted pollinators,

and the seed-heads

will be left to feed the birds through the fall and

winter months. The perennials will also keep weeds

away from the edges of the garden.

By the end of the September the Apprentice Garden

project closed, though

some families continued to

tend late-season vegetables.

Most of the garden spaces

were cleared of plant debris

and a cover crop of

crimson clover was planted

to nourish the soil during the winter and prevent

weed growth. Fresh straw was laid over newspaper

in the pathways to prevent weed growth there.

You are welcome to stop by the garden any

Wednesday and bring your questions. For more

information about the Apprentice Garden, please

contact Janet Clauson by email at

[email protected]

Chartwell Garden Club News

Horticulture News By Rita Custer, Horticultural Chair

Visitors to the Kinder Farm Park farmhouse garden

have been asking about the tall plant with the bright

orange flowers. It is

tithonia, commonly

called Mexican

sunflower which is an

annual native to Mexico

and Central America.

Mexican sunflower

grows from 3 ft. to 6 ft.

and blooms from later

summer into fall. The flowers look a lot like daisies

or zinnias and produce seeds which can be

harvested for future plantings. This plant needs full

sun and benefits from a good quantity of organic

compost when planted. Additionally, deadheading

fading flowers and cutting back encourages more

flowering and fuller plant. It is drought tolerant

when full grown and does not like cold.

The Mexican sunflower at Kinder Farm Park is a

statuesque 6 ft. tall and is a mecca for bees,

hummingbirds and butterflies including monarchs,

eastern tigers, swallow tails and others.

Plant seeds when ground temperature is at least 60

degrees. Germination can take 10 to 21 days. Keep

the soil moist. Plants may need staking to prevent

injury from strong winds or birds. This is a

fabulous plant for a pollinator garden.

General Club News Fall is prime season to plant daffodil bulbs. Keep a

note of the name of each daffodil you plant (and the

color/division code). You can find information

about your daffodils at daffseek.org. This

information can be included on a plant marker or

you can keep a map to help identify your blooms.

Growing and showing daffodils is fun and easy for

all ages.

The 2019 District II Daffodil Show will be held on

April 8th to 10th at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church,

400 Benfield Road Severna Park, MD 21146.

Celebrating an Event

An aged farmer and his wife

were leaning against the edge

of their pig-pen when the old

woman wistfully recalled

that the next week would

mark their golden wedding

anniversary.

"Let's have a party, Homer,"

she suggested. "Let's kill a

The farmer scratched his

grizzled head. "Gee, Ethel," he finally answered,

"I don't see why the pig should take the blame for

something that happened fifty years ago."

Protect… History Kinder Farm Park is named for the German-born

Kinder family who over the course of 80 years

expanded initial land acquisitions into a large-scale

agricultural operation.

During the early 1900’s the Kinders focused on

produce sales, and sold milk, eggs and ice to

neighbors. They took their produce to markets in

Baltimore by horse and wagon and later by truck.

After World War II, the long hours and dropping

profits at the markets led to their expansion into

raising hogs, turkeys and later exclusively beef

cattle. In 1979 the Kinder brothers sold 288 acres

to Anne Arundel County in the interest of

preserving open space and farm history. This land

became Kinder Farm Park

A farmer was milking his cow. He was just starting

to get a good rhythm going when a bug flew into

bug flew into the cow's ear. The farmer didn't think

much about it, until the bug squirted out into his

bucket. It went in one ear and out the udder.

Texan farmer travels

A Texan farmer goes to Australia for a vacation.

There he meets an Aussie farmer and gets talking.

The Aussie shows off his big wheat field and the

Texan says, "Oh! We have wheat fields that are at

least twice as large".

Then they walk around the ranch a little and the

Aussie shows off his herd of cattle. The Texan

immediately says, " We have longhorns that are at

least twice as large as your cows".

The conversation has, meanwhile, almost died when

the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through

the field. He asks, "And what are those?”

The Aussie asks with an incredulous look, "Don't

you have any grasshoppers in Texas?"
