Accomplishments

The Community Services Program Offers First Certified Nursing

Assistant Program

The Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Training Program completed its first session on

Tuesday, October 25, 2016. All ten students enrolled in the program passed the

course and State exam. Four of the ten students in the CNA program were hired at

New Orange Hills, the clinical training facility for the CNA program.

AccomplishmentsFREE OCTA BUS TRANPORTATIONAt the last Board Meeting, our Board of Trustees approved an agreement with the Orange County

Transportation Authority that will allow our noncredit students to board any OCTA fixed route bus

free of charge for one year (a pilot year). To be eligible for this free program, students must:

1. Attend classes a minimum of 12 hours per week in any of the following instructional

programs (AEBG authorized areas):

•Adult Basic Education

•High School Subjects (Adult High School Diploma, Preparation for GED or HiSET.

•English as a Second Language

•Short-Term Career Technical Education

•Workforce Preparation

•Adults with Disabilities

2. Maintain attending 12 hours per week (must attend a minimum of 75% of the time)

3. Remain in good academic standing

AccomplishmentsDivision Completes Work to Expand CurriculumPrepared and submitted 31 new course outlines and 17 new certificates programs to the College

Curriculum Council, including the creation of 2 new articulation agreements with college credit.

The certificate programs cover a wide range of areas, including Medical Office Occupations,

Nursing Occupations, Advanced Manufacturing, Employment Preparation for Adults with

Disabilities, and Home-Based Businesses.

The articulation agreements will allow Continuing Education students who complete NC College

Preparatory Composition (HSENG 086) to enroll directly into SCC’s Credit Freshman Composition

(English 101) without needing to take a college entrance assessment test. Similarly, Continuing

Education students who complete the NC College Prep Algebra (HSMTH 176/177) will be eligible

to enroll in SCC’s Credit Intermediate Algebra (Math 80 or 86) which meets the minimum

requirements for an AA. The intent of these agreements is to eliminate a barrier that has existed

to student preparation in college credit English & Math.

Special thanks to Coordinators, Angela Guevara, Daniel Oase, Elaine Pham, and Denise Salcido

for taking the lead on the development of the course outlines, creating the certificates, and creating

the articulation agreements.

AccomplishmentsDivision Enters into Three New Instructional Services Agreements

The Continuing Education Division entered into three new Instructional Services Agreements

(ISA):

ISA with the Integrated Resources Institute to provide employment preparation to Project

SEARCH students

ISA with South Coast College to provide noncredit classes that prepare students to

become Medical Assistants in addition to noncredit software application courses

ISA with the Orange Unified School District to provide noncredit classes that lead to the

attainment of an adult high school diploma.

The purpose of ISA’s is to allow community colleges to leverage resources with other agencies in

an effort to improve training and services to the community.

AccomplishmentsProject SEARCH Graduates First Cohort

On Friday May 26th, Project Search held its first commencement ceremony at the Children’s

Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) for its first cohort of Project SEARCH students. The cohort

consisted of 10 student trainees who over the past year participated in skills training at the CHOC.

The goal of the program (Project SEARCH) is to provide to individuals with disabilities on-site

employment preparation in areas that match their strengths. The project is made possible through

a collaboration among various agencies, including SCC, the Integrated Resources Institute and

the CHOC and is proving to be successful as over 50% of the graduates were offered employment

at CHOC and other businesses within Orange County.
