Early Learning Programs for young children at WPL are based on early literacy research and include tips and information for parents and caregivers. Your active participation in these programs will maximize the experience for you and your child. Engaging in reading, rhyming, singing and movement activities together will help to build your child’s literacy skills for life.
Caregivers of children ages 9 and under must remain in the library while their children attend programs.

Get Set LearnAges: Birth to 4 years Location: YMCA Multi-purpose Room October 10 to November 30 (8 weeks, 16 classes) Tuesdays & Thursdays (participants attend twice a week) 12:45pm to 2:45pmFamilies enjoy fun activities, circle time and a snack (provided) together. In the second hour, parents learn, share ideas and get a break. Children explore and have fun with new friends. Our WPL company will work together to adapt a classic story into a play. Learn about writing, acting, directing and theatre tech. Our session will wrap up with a performance on Saturday, November 25.

A Bird Chronicle – Author visit to celebrate Ontario Public Library Week Saturday, October 14 2:45pm to 3:00pm – author reading with Rina Barone 3:00pm to 4:30pm – craft time with the illustrator of the book, Ruth Ann Pearce Everyone welcome!Author Rina Barone will be visiting the WPL Main library to read from her new book, A Bird Chronicle. Books will be available to purchase and have autographed. Afterwards, there will be a special craft time for kids where they will have a chance to make their own bird masterpiece!With A Bird Chronicle, learning the alphabet has never been more fun or more beautiful. A stunning collection of birds and letters, words and illustrations, stories and silhouettes, A Bird Chronicle is a children’s story book, ABC book, art book, and a keepsake to treasure for years to come.
Now and Then Youth Photography Exhibit Location: Main Library – Auditorium Thursday, September 21 7:00pmSee Waterloo through the camera lens of seven youth photographers (ages 10 to 17). In this exhibit, new photos of evolving Waterloo are set alongside shots of our Uptown from days past (via the WPL local history archives). In this journey into the past these young artists have compared landmarks as they have changed or endured, developing a greater appreciation for their surroundings in the process. Come and see things through their lens, as we celebrate the opening of the exhibit.Meet the photographers and their mentor photographer Jason Panda (artist/educator), enjoy light refreshments and learn more about the project. Hosted by the WPL Youth Events Team.

Positive DisciplineLocation: McCormick Branch Thursdays, September 28 to November 2 7:00pm to 8:30pm Pre-register beginning September 21 Positive Discipline is an approach to parenting that focuses on guiding behaviour that respects a child’s rights to healthy development, protection from violence, and participation in their learning. Positive Discipline is based on research focused on healthy child development and effective parenting, and is founded on children’s rights principles. Star Party! Saturday, September 23 7:00 to 8:30pm Waterloo Park by the Band Shell – Everyone welcome!Let’s celebrate International Astronomy day! Join WPL and the Kitchener-Waterloo Astronomical Society for a Star Party in the Park. You’ll have a chance to gaze at the planets and the moon through powerful telescopes and learn how to find constellations. We’ll share stories, sing songs and have fun activities that will help you become an outer space expert. Culture Days Location: John M. Harper Branch, Community Room Saturday, September 30 1:00pm to 3:30pmIn celebration of Canada 150, WPL is teaming up with the Laurelwood Neighbourhood Association. Participants in this exciting Culture Days activity will be invited to create an art card inspired by the trees in their neighbourhoods. Participants will learn colour mixing and a variety of painting techniques while observing the shapes of trees and leaves. Unleash your inner creativity to make something beautiful to take home. As a symbol of community, participants will also leave their mark on a “Culture Days in Laurelwood” map.
